“If Wishes Were Horses” 30th-anniversary reflections Bedtime stories are supposed to be fun, but one gets a bit too real for Molly O'Brien when the straw-spinning imp Rumpelstiltskin shows up in her room. Not the kind of visitor you want as a firstborn child. But that's just the start of a surprising evening for the crew of Deep Space Nine. London Kings baseball legend Buck Bokai pays a visit to Captain Sisko, and Doctor Bashir finds himself in bed with Jadzia Dax just hours after being rejected over dinner. The weirdness continues to grow until the station and the entire Bajoran system become threatened by a spatial rift. As the crew races the clock to find a solution, Sisko realizes that both the problem and the solution lie in their imaginations. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “If Wishes Were Horses,” its fun veneer, the wealth of character and social commentary that lies beneath, and why Miles must be feeling like Lando Calrissian. EX57 - Bryan Adams - A Great Canadian Musical Export - Cuts Like a Knife and Everything I Do, I Do it For You Bryan Adams, in full Bryan Guy Adams, (born November 5, 1959, Kingston, Ontario, Canada), Canadian rock singer-songwriter, photographer, and social activist whose hit albums Cuts Like a Knife (1983) and Reckless (1984) made him one of the most popular and successful recording artists of the 1980s. Adams was musically talented at an early age and taught himself how to play guitar. His father served in the Canadian army, was a UN peacekeeping observer, and served as a diplomat, necessitating many relocations for the family. When his parents divorced, he lived with his mother just north of Vancouver, British Columbia. At age 16, he dropped out of high school, ready to pursue a full-time career as a musician, having already performed as lead vocalist for Canadian glam-rock band Sweeney Todd. He spent time working in a recording studio, performing on tours, and recording music for Sweeney Todd's album If Wishes Were Horses (1977). Shortly after the recording's release, Adams was introduced to Jim Vallance, a Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer. Vallance recognized Adams's ability but also saw the need for further vocal training. With Vallance's help, it was not long before Adams established a powerful, distinct sound, one compared to that of Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, and Steve Marriott. Tracy Mattox, the mother of two wonderful adult children, semi-retired Graphic Designer turned Artist, and Author! She is a seminary graduate and spent many years as a Youth, College, and Women's Ministry Leader over the past 42 years. Her book, Holding Onto Hope Against All Hope, will be released on September 10, 2023, and her coloring book, If Wishes Were Horses, is available on her artist website, tjmattox.com. Beginning at the age of five, her parents not only had a bitter divorce, but sadly she also became a victim of child sexual abuse, which she endured between the ages of 5 to 11. While struggling immensely through the trauma, God blessed her with a horse who became her confidant and best friend. Her love of horses kept her sane and from spiraling into a pit of depression. She focused on rodeoing in high school, playing volleyball, softball, basketball, and track. She then went to college on a volleyball scholarship, but the call of travel and adventure caught her, and soon she was off working with racehorses all over the west coast. It was a chance encounter at Longacres Racetrack in Seattle that she found the love of her life - Jesus! A ministry called, Racetracker's for Christ gave her faith and a purpose. Tracy dove into youth/college ministry headfirst. She began a Coffee House Ministry called "Obadiah's Coffee House," where they ministered to all who came through their doors. While at the coffee house, she met her husband, and they went on to have two children. Unfortunately, after 28 years of marriage, he left and asked for a divorce. Asperger's Syndrome and Narcissism were a constant battle in their marriage for her. When he told her he wanted a divorce, she closed her graphic design business, packed her car with her clothes and computer, and moved to Redding, California, to be closer to her daughter. In Redding, through Bethel Church, she found counseling, healing, and hope as she trusted God to care for her as she started over in life. My mom used to share with me a few old sayings about wishes. The first one was ‘if wishes were horses, beggars would ride”. This basically means that if you could accomplish something by simply wishing for it, life would be so easy. The second one was, ‘Don't wish your life away'. These two sayings go hand-in-hand. If all you are doing is sitting around wishing, your life probably doesn't have much value. And if you truly believe you could have everything you ever wanted just by making a wish, then I'll add another old saying you need to hear – ‘That dog just doesn't hunt.'In this episode, listen in to find out how your wishes can be a good thing – or if your dog is sleeping on the porch.Support the show

Blueboy special with Paul Stewart in conversation with David Eastaugh Blueboy formed around 1989 and initially consisted of Keith Girdler (on vocals) and Paul Stewart (on guitars), formerly of little-known band Feverfew. They soon signed to Sarah Records, releasing the home-recorded single "Clearer" in 1991, and took on more members, including singer/cellist Gemma Townley and second guitarist Harvey Williams (of The Field Mice/Another Sunny Day). "Clearer" was followed by several singles and two albums on Sarah, If Wishes Were Horses and Unisex. In October 1994, Blueboy recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show.[3] Their final release, The Bank of England, was released in 1998 on Sarah head Matt Haynes' new label, Shinkansen Recordings. By then, Girdler and Stewart were the only original members of the band. Girdler and Stewart were also involved in two other bands, Arabesque and Beaumont,[1] and Girdler also recorded with Lovejoy. Townley later joined Trembling Blue Stars, as did Williams.

To quote a great man, "Nothing good happened here today! None was entertained, nothing was achieved, and no child's life was saved. Everything's going to go on as normal and babies are sometimes going to die and no one fucking cares!" "If Wishes Were Horses" happened and it only happens again when you want it to. Think about that. Nine Deeps of Space is a Trekalong podcast that lets you watch Deep Space Nine along with us on Netflix. It updates every Sunday night at 10 PM CST. NDoS alternates with its partner series, The Beige and The Bold, which is about Star Trek: The Next Generation.

In the season 1 episode If Wishes Were Horses, imaginations start running wild and coming to life. We have a blizzard and emus on the promenade, we have two Jadzias and we have Rumpelstiltskin following Miles around. This is a wacky episode. Of all of these weird things, the hardest thing to buy is that two Jadzias are not better than one. That's just wrong.
It’s harder to decide what’s more incredible: little Molly O’Brien’s storybook Rumpelstiltskin coming to life or Jadzia Dax as a sex kitten. When the crew’s fantasy come to life, anything could happen. The post Emissaries of Profits – If Wishes Were Horses appeared first on Androids and Assets.
Comfort movie month continues and this week I’m breaking out the big guns. There are few things in this world that can put a smile on my face as easily as that bear with very little brains, Winnie The Pooh. For episode 15 of The Steal My Name Podcast I’m looking at the Disney classic, The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh. Before I was into horror, before Ghostbusters, hell, before I could walk, there was Pooh Bear and his friends in The Hundred Acre Wood. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine trundles on with episode 15, If Wishes Were Horses, and I close by looking at Richard Morgan’s 2002 Cyberpunk-Noir novel, Altered Carbon. Be sure to like, follow, subscribe, wash your hands, do your morning stoutness exercises, and bring an extra pot of honey to lunch. Enjoy!
The Rules of Acquisition: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast
Hugh talks Colm Meaney on leprechauns and nerds out on some baseball statistics. More like "If Wishes Were Horses#!t." Yes, after last week's praise, we're back into the gutter! Obrien meets WHATISCERTAINLYNOTALEPRECHAUN. Nope, it's just another Alien of the Week. As Peter Dinklage said in Living in Oblivion: "Want to make it weird? Oh, put a dwarf in it." So we get "the Man from Another Place" himself, Michael J Anderson as a guest star. We talk about that, some other things, the Julian Problem, and the one good thing to stick around from this episode: Sisko's baseball. Not mentioned, but for new Star Trek commentary, check out Can't Picardly Wait
Everyone has things they want, wish for, daydream about. In "Progress", one man dreams of being left in peace while Jake and Nog dream of profit. Meanwhile, dreams come to life a little too well and endanger everything in "If Wishes Were Horses". Also this week: stupid fads, the worst "Trek" weekend, and our Jake's business pursuits. [Timestamps: Progress: 01:14; If Wishes Were Horses: 27:41]
This one got me thinking about Star Trek and fanfiction. I don't judge Star Trek fanfiction, mainly because I make improvisational Star Trek fanfiction every week with my friend Derek under the presumption it will amuse other people. Also because Star Trek's ability to inspire people is part of its strength. And yet… I feel like there's a transition from when a show is true to its premise and fights hard to establish its characters to when it feels established enough to take itself less seriously. TNG goes from “Symbiosis” to “Qpid.” Deep Space Nine goes from “If Wishes Were Horses” to “Badda Bing Badda Bang.” Buffy: the Vampire Slayer eventually makes that musical episode. Even shows that are comedic or tongue in cheek seem to do it. Scrubs went from having a very serious core with humor around it to the sitcom it celebrated not being in “My Life in Four Colors.” Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, already tongue-in-cheek, eventually threw up its hands and recast its entire cast as its own production staff in “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Hercules” and “For Those of You Just Joining Us…” Maybe I'm cherry-picking. Law and Order is on its billionth, tonally-even season. Firefly seemed to consistently have fun with itself. There are definitely anime series which start light, but buckle down–the one with Vash the Stampede comes to mind. Who knows? Maybe I'm just finding patterns in the static.
"If Wishes Were Horses"
Blueboy special with Paul Stewart in conversation talking about life in music, Sarah Records and much much more Blueboy were an indie pop band formed in Reading, Berkshire who were signed to Sarah Records and later Shinkansen Recordings. Core members Keith Girdler and Paul Stewart also recorded as Arabesque and Beaumont. Blueboy formed around 1989 and initially consisted of Keith Girdler (on vocals) and Paul Stewart (on guitars), formerly of little-known band Feverfew. Keith Girdler was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and he died on 15 May 2007. Prior to his death he was working as volunteer manager for Age Concern in Eastbourne. In 2008, Siesta Records issued a compilation album called Country Music (Songs for Keith Girdler). The compilation was put together by Richard Preece (of Lovejoy) to raise money for the Martletts Hospice in Hove who cared for Girdler.
Ahh, If Wishes Were Horses. What is there to say about it? It’s got the Dancing Man from Twin Peaks as Rumpelstiltzkin, it’s got Buck Bokai, it’s got Bashir’s sex fantasies, it’s got Gunji Jackdaws… that’s pretty much everything, so we just decided to waste/enhance everyone’s time by talking about Ninja Turtles and how hard/easy they are to differentiate, classic Konami arcade side-scrolling beat-‘em-ups, how appropriate or not Bashir’s fantasies are, the surprising similarities between Gunji Jackdaws and emus, dumb Trek animal analogies, and, ahhh, BASEBALL. If podcasts were Gunji Jackdaws, ROTWeilers would… listen? Sure, why not, makes as much sense as anything in this episode.

This week on Deep Space Now, Hillary and Nic face a station where wishes have become reality! To escape this waking dream we ponder the effects of having Bashir's fantasy version of Dax made flesh, question how quickly Kira agrees to an extremely risky course of action, and keep a running and lengthy tally of the many horndogs within this episode!
Essential DS9, Season One. The episodic television format has its strengths and weaknesses. The advantage is that the viewer can tune into just about any episode, any time, and enjoy it without having to know what happened in previous installments. The downside is that it's harder to build momentum with self-contained episodes. That means that some episodes will shine, while others will fall into the shadows. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing join our sister shows Standard Orbit and To The Journey in determining which episodes of Star Trek are required viewing … this time for Deep Space Nine, a series that—more than any other—builds upon itself story after story. One by one, we discuss each episode to determine if it's truly essential to the DS9 storyline or something you can skip without worry. DS9 Season One Overview. When you look back at the whole of Deep Space Nine, the first season feels a bit out-of-place. The tone of the episodes in this freshman outing don't quite mesh with the persona DS9 took on in later seasons. Yet there are plenty of seeds being planted in these early adventures, and there are even a few moments of sheer brilliance. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing take a trip through every episode from DS9 Season One to see which shine, which don't, and what elements connect with the overall series arc—either hinting at the greatness to come or falling under the label of Niner Essentials. In the latest episode of LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS: A STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE PODCAST, Andrew Leyland, Paul Spataro, Shawn Engel and Dr. Bill Robinson cover the episode "If Wishes Were Horses", an episode which has a various characters from the crew's imagination showing up on the station and causing general havoc. And by general havoc, I mean portraying a lumpy baseball player, a fictional gold spinning imp, and a slutty version of Lt. Dax. So, not everything is a major problem for the characters...unless you consider the whole imagination space rift thingy that is going to destroy the station. How will the crew survive? If Wishes Were Horses. Aliens appearing onboard a starship or space station is nothing new to Star Trek. But normally you expect to see a menace like Klingons, the Borg, or a woman in go-go boots and a bling belt—none of whom can spin straw into gold. As Terry J. Erdmann said in the DS9 Companion, “If Wishes Were Horses” could have been just another “mysterious-aliens-play-head-games-with-the-Star Trek-crew” story. Instead it morphed into a delightfully whimsical episode. Or did it? In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Megan Calcote, Von Glitschka, and John Mills to discuss the power of imagination, the demise of baseball, the challenges of working with space emus, the fantasy life of Julian Bashir, and, of course, Rumpelstiltskin. In our news segment we share our thoughts on The Primate Directive, which is IDW's crossover between Star Trek and Planet of the Apes, comments by Benedict Cumberbatch and Zachary Quinto about Khan possibly appearing in the next film, and we discuss the results of StarTrek.com's poll that asked fans to choose the saddest death scene in Star Trek.
