Aquesta setmana dediquem el monogràfic d'estiu a Ben Harper que acaba de publicar nou disc "Bloodline Maintenance", on fa un homenatge a la música dels 70 que escoltava a casa de petit (Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Bill Whiters...). It's crazy when you realise how young Daniel, Chris and Ben were when they formed "Innocent Criminals" which would become Silverchair. These 15 year olds went into the studio to create one of the greatest debuts as we know it, "Tomorrow" (the album version is a little different as you'll find out). The band would grow and in a way, we grew up with them. After Silverchair, Ben took a break but never stopped working on music. Leon Mobley has lived an absolutely fascinating life. From performing with Duke Ellington as a child, to being mentored by Babatunde Olatunji, to recording with Stevie Wonder, to collaborations with Nas, the longtime percussionist with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals is a legend among drummers. The story for Mobley starts early, at the Elma Lewis School of Fine art and continues with a role in Raisin (the musical based on A Raisin In The Sun) on Broadway. From there, he embarked on a fascinating ride that saw him share a stage with everyone from Michael Jackson to the Marley family. His collaboration list is unimpeachable and his energy is always turned to 11. If you have an interest in drumming, and the traditional African rhythms that informs so much of our music today, this is the episode for you!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Natalie and Taylor of Hey, King! When you first hear indie rock act Hey, King! it immediately becomes clear that each musical moment is rendered with precision, care, and a whole lot of heart. These are powerful and humanity affirming songs from songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Natalie London and her partner, vocalist and percussionist Taylor Plecity. A formidable and boisterous live force that often results in an eight piece orchestral band, they've previously toured extensively with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. Ben Harper produced Hey, Kings! debut EP, Be Still, which was just released, as well as their full length set for a 2021 release. Both records are being released via ANTI-.If Hey, King! makes resilient songs, it's because London has overcome a life's worth of near-death illness. Though she had started her career while at Columbia University, she contracted Lyme disease and co-infections Babesia and Bartonella on an early tour, forcing her to be bedridden for over four years. "During that time, I couldn't walk, talk, read or write, I lost a great deal of my memory. I felt like I had a complete chance at a brand new life and everything from my writing to what I listen to reflects that," says London. She adds, "Starting my life over, I felt like a kid again. There was so much unharnessed passion, longing and a need for both adventure and home."As London navigated her recovery, these free and genuine new songs became part of a new band called Hey, King! which gets its name from the ferocious story Where The Wild Things Are. As London began to explore her new musical identity and lease on life, she met Plecity. Their relationship evolved to the couple making music together. "While it makes for a really complex dynamic, you get to share every incredible experience you've been waiting your whole life for with the person that you love the most," says London. Their obvious chemistry is bursting through songs like the smoldering "Half Alive." Boasting dual vocal melodies and some spine-tingling harmonies, it's a cathartic taste of what Hey, King! can accomplish, especially during the raw declaration "I was only half alive before I loved you.""Half Alive" was produced by Ben Harper and mixed by Sheldon Gomberg (Fiona Apple, Lucinda Williams). "We got really lucky because Ben gave us a ton of freedom to record the songs how we imagined them," says London. She adds, "Ben’s audience feels like they are attending church every time they see him live, they are so deeply moved. Touring with Ben and watching that connection with the audience helped us evolve greatly in the way we play." On the confessional "Don't Let Me Get Away," London belts over impassioned acoustic guitar strums, "I’ll tell myself to fuck it up first just in case / Tell myself anything in hopes to keep me safe." Few artists can turn their vulnerability into such vibrant power.While Hey, King! have been able to find their resonance through bare bones and simple singles, their song "Lucky" proves how compelling and explosive their sound can get. Plecity explains the track: "We want to make music that we feel our younger selves needed to hear. With 'Lucky', we wrote what we'd want to say to ourselves during the times where our lives were the hardest, and tell that child it is going to be okay." The two sing, "Let me go, let me go back and tell me / 'I’ll survive and say someday you will find me.” It's a spellbinding and powerful moment, complete with a vivid horn section and a hair-raising chorus. It's the kind of song that feels like an anchor, one where you're supported and loved by the people walking alongside you.In 2021, Hey, King! will release their Ben Harper-produced debut album on ANTI-.We want to hear from you! I want to start this episode by giving a big shout out to the developers of the Audacity project.  This is the software I use to put together this podcast and I just downloaded the latest version which includes a much improved Noise Removal utility.  Hopefully you will notice much clearer sounding intros and outros going forward!The artist for this episode is no stranger to the Live Music Podcast and has probably been featured more than anyone else in one incarnation or another.  Of course, there is a very good reason for this since Ben Harper and the various musicians that he plays with have a reputation for excellent live performances.  If you have never seen one in person I highly recommend putting it on your bucket list.  The concert I am featuring might be one of the best sounding of his recordings and I have been very enthused to bring it to you ever since I recently discovered it.  Here are Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals from their May 22, 2003 concert in Berlin, Germany. Earlier in the week I had planned to go with a different concert for this episode but it seems that Santa had an early present for me. Last year around this time I featured Warren Haynes' 19th Annual X-Mas Jam and I decided to continue the tradition when I came across multiple concerts from the 20th X-Mas Jam. The lineups are always so good that I might have to make this a yearly tradition. The music for this show will feature a new band with a familiar lead singer. During the Beastie Boys recent “Get Out and Vote” tour, Ben Harper debuted a new lineup, Relentless 7. The beginnings of the band's formation date back to 1998 at a concert Ben played in Austin. While on the way to the show, the guy driving Ben's van asked to play a demo tape. Ben was so impressed that he got the band a record deal and continued to work with their guitarist on several projects, including one of the tracks on Both Sides of the Gun. The band was Wan Santo Condo and guitar player Jason Mozersky, is now playing lead for Relentless 7. This concert begins with a track called “Number With No Name,” which is from their debut album, White Lies For Dark Times, which will be out in May of next year. The limited tour stops they have made so far have been at smaller venues than typical for the Innocent Criminals. The reason for this can be attributed to the following quote from Ben Harper: “I wanted us to earn it, this is where it needs to be for it to be sincere”. I for one am hoping they stick with this philosophy on their album tour next Spring, just be sure to get your tickets early. The Gospel According to Ben. With his recent prolific song production Ben Harper has been in danger of wearing out his welcome. Lifeline however, defies the odds, and like the five other albums he's released this decade, it is close to flawless.

I intentionally left off one of the concerts from Bonnaroo on my last post since I absolutely had to feature it in my next podcast episode. Every year at Bonnnaroo there has been a Superjam where artists from different bands and styles of music come together. It really symbolizes the diverse array of styles on display at Bonnaroo and always ends up being an awesome show. It goes to show you that truly great musicians can adapt to play with just about anyone and produce great sounding music. My mouth salivated when I saw the lineup for this year's Superjam: on lead guitar and vocals Ben Harper, on drums ?uestlove of the Roots, and on bass the legendary John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. This ensemble truly lived up to the name of Superjam. The week after Bonnaroo I scoured the net and almost had given up hope on finding this one. Last week, however, I found a link on bt.etree.org to download my holy grail of tapings. After listening to it several times since then I can assure you that it definitely lived up to my hype and was worth the effort. As you might expect they cover a lot of Zeppelin and throw in quite a few extended jams. This concert is in an early lead for taping of the year for me, so give it a listen and see if you agree.
