It's so low-pitched it's difficult to hear, but this is the rumble of the wind on Mars. It was detected by sensors on the Insight Lander, which was sent to the Red Planet in 2018 to listen. That's what made this discovery of liquid water possible. As well as sensing the Martian breeze, the probe recorded more than 1,300 Mars quakes – vibrations emanating from inside the Red Planet. Scientists have now studied that seismic record in detail to work out exactly how Mars moves and what material the seismic waves are travelling through. This showed that deep in the rocky Martian crust, inside cracks in the rock, there are large reservoirs of groundwater. Mars's surface is etched with channels and ripples that paint a picture of its watery past, and the researchers believe that this discovery answers the question, where did all that water go? But they say tapping into it to supply future human exploration of Mars will be very challenging. The reservoirs they've detected are at depths of between ten and 20 kilometres, which would be difficult to drill, even here on Earth.

The idea of turning Mars into a livable world for humans is a common element of science fiction. But could such an action be done in real life? Scientists are now proposing a new method to warm up Earth's planetary neighbor. The idea involves putting engineered particles made of iron or aluminum into the atmosphere. The goal is to trap escaping heat and direct sunlight toward the Martian surface. The proposed idea would be to increase the natural greenhouse effect on Mars and raise its surface temperature by around 28 degrees Celsius over ten years. Such a change alone would not make Mars livable for people. But the scientists who developed the idea see it as a possible first step. Edwin Kite of the University of Chicago helped lead the study that appeared recently in the publication Science Advances. Kite described the process of terraforming – meaning to change a planet's environment to be more like Earth. "For Mars, warming the planet is a necessary, but insufficient, first step. Previous concepts have focused on releasing greenhouse gases, but these require large amounts of resources that are scarce on Mars," he said. Kite added that climate modeling suggests the new idea of using engineered particles to warm Mars' atmosphere could work better than previous ideas. Kite explained that the work is important because it presents a possible method that could help future exploration plans. NASA has sent robotic vehicles to explore the Martian surface and the InSight Lander to study the planet's interior. The U.S. space agency's Artemis program aims to put astronauts in the coming years on the moon's surface for the first time since 1972 in preparation for possible future human missions to Mars. There are several barriers to human settlements on Mars. They include a lack of breathable oxygen, harmful ultraviolet radiation, salty soil, and dust storms that sometimes cover much of the planet. And Mars' cold temperatures are a serious issue. The median Martian surface temperature is about minus-65 degrees Celsius. With its thin atmosphere, solar heat on the Martian surface easily escapes into space. The proposal would aim to permit liquid water to exist on the surface of Mars, which has water in the form of ice at its polar areas and its subsurface. The scientists proposed continuously releasing tiny particles, called nanorods, into the atmosphere at a rate of about 30 liters per second for years. Samaneh Ansari of Northwestern University in Illinois is the study's lead writer. Ansari said, "The idea is to either ship the material or better yet, ship the manufacturing tool and make the nanorods on the planet since iron and aluminum are abundant on the surface of Mars.” The researchers are mindful of the possibility of unintended consequences in terraforming another world. Scientists, for instance, are eager to learn whether Mars has held life in the past - or perhaps currently, in the form of subsurface microbes. Kite suggested that the costs and benefits of releasing nanorods are uncertain. For example, he said if Mars' soil has compounds that are harmful to life from Earth, then the benefit of warming Mars is zero.

Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar easily won her primary race on Tuesday in a rematch against an opponent she beat by just a few thousand votes two years ago. While she and other members of The Squad easily held onto their seats in Congress, two of their fellow progressives were ousted amid record spending by pro-Israel groups: Reps —Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri. The American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, spent $23 million on the two races alone, helping make them the most expensive House primaries in history. NASA says it is retiring its InSight Mars lander mission, after over four years of collecting data on the red planet. InSight recently fell silent for the first time since arriving on Mars; its power levels had been dwindling for months because of dust coating its solar panels.
Listen Now to Future News 12.20.2022 Quaking and shaking before the holidays? Only up North, but our early warning earthquake detector did wake us up at 2:30 a.m. to let us know to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on!!” Nothing happened, at least in our county. But it did get us thinking about quakes, early detection, and the Insight Lander, our seismometer on Mars, and the massive 4.7 quake it registered before the lander’s batteries died from the Martian dust covering its solar panels. What new and exciting this week is the rollout of ChatGPT, an AI powered search engine on steroids that just might set the direction for future internet searches and explorations. We and some listeners try some queries, both scientific and poetic, to see how this latest tool performs. We are impressed! One caller is worried that our explorations may speed up the arrival of the mysterious “Singularity.” We, however, are unafraid, as we believe that there is only one oneness. Enjoy!

NASA’s InSight Lander has recorded for the first time ever a marsquake, kicking off a new scientific field: Martian seismology!
On this week's Science episode from Fueled By Death Cast, the first recorded details of marsquakes are sent back from the InSight lander. With haunting audio, this proves that the red planet is still active with these quakes and will help us peer deeper into the interior as we find more. Then, modern chemistry is based on facts and some theories that have never been proven until now. Early after the Big Bang that started the universe, there had to have been the first ever molecule formed from the first atoms of hydrogen and helium. This molecule had never been found in space, and all of that has changed.
Perhaps the most significant engineering feat in the past decade, the Mars Insight Lander has successfully landed on Mars. But what's next? We take a look at what the lander has been up to in the weeks since it made it to Mars, and the plans that NASA has for it while it hangs out on the red planet.
This week on the science mini-episode, the NASA InSight rover on Mars captured the haunting sound of wind vibrating two of its sensors. This is a special treat, as one of the sensors will be transferred to the planet's surface very soon and wouldn't have been able to capture these sounds. Plus, the OSIRIS-REX spacecraft has reached its destination 1.2 billion miles away, the asteroid Bennu. Osiris will be the first spacecraft to orbit something this small (1600 feet across) and it will take a sample and return to Earth in 2023. University of Copenhagen scientists managed to genetically delete an enzyme in mice that made it impossible for them to get fat, even on a very fatty diet; Alan Turing wrote a paper in 1952 that is still having impacts on science today in ways you may not expect; and NASA sends the InSight Lander to Mars.
Cody Gough and Ashley Hamer discuss the following stories from Curiosity.com to help you learn something new in just a few minutes: Forget Rovers: NASA's InSight Lander Will Learn About Mars By Sitting Still Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? For the first time since launching the Curiosity rover in 2011, NASA is sending a spacecraft to the surface of Mars. Exciting! Surface missions are sexy missions: Everyone loves roving robots and panoramic imagery of other worlds. But the agency's latest interplanetary emissary won't be doing any traveling (it's a lander, not a rover). And while it might snap some pictures of dreamy Martian vistas, it's not the surface that it's targeting.
The InSight Lander could help us answer deep questions about Mars.
