Today's episode is called, “We are all Music” with a special guest who's excited to discuss the importance of knowing music is what drives our everyday lives!   Our Guest born on Long Island during the Nixon administration. An American bachelor of Italian/Irish descent. Professional singer and bandleader (music producer too) in New York City for 25 years before moving to Las Vegas in 2018 for new adventures in the great American west. While singing remains a talent of mine, it is the strumming of ukuleles (baritone and tenor especially) which has become my greener pastures. Using my Fender gear, he strums a thousand songs spanning 1920s to 1980s. Once upon a time he thought he was a musician, until the day he realized that he is music. We are all music. Our very existence is music.    Ladies, Gentlemen, and everyone…The one, The only….Timothy Connolly!!

Naz is a gender non-conforming queer artist who works around in between spaces. They were born in Iran into a middle class muslim family, and followed their parents to the United States as a child in 1977. Naz recounts their experience of being an outsider in this country. They describe growing up as an immigrant and attending white Italian Irish catholic school in a polarized, racially divided city where they experienced hatred from their classmates and teachers, as well as working as a camera assistant in a misogynistic anti-muslim film industry in New York during the years leading up to 9/11. Naz questions the definition of community, and wants to bring an honest collaboration into this world. (Summary by Eunjong Choi.)

Interview with Dr. Alexa Mieses, family medicine resident, mentor & writer [Show Summary] Do you want to be a clinician? Are you concerned about your ability to gain acceptance to med school? Listen in to today’s interview with the author of The Heartbeat of Success: A Med Student's Guide to Med School Admissions, Dr. Alexa Mieses. The journey of a family practitioner, author, advocate [Show Notes] Our guest today is Dr. Alexa Mieses, who has an MD and MPH and in her own words, "strives to have influence beyond the confines of the examination room." She is a resident physician in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. In addition to providing clinical care to marginalized patient populations, Dr. Mieses' interests include population health, increasing diversity in the physician workforce, mentoring premedical students, writing, and research.” Dr. Mieses graduated from CUNY magna cum laude in 2011. She then studied for her MD/MPH at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 2012 to 2016 and graduated with distinction in Research and Excellence in Family Medicine. She has been a Family Medicine Resident at Duke University since 2016 and has earned the Harvey Estes, MD Memorial Award for Leadership and Advocacy. Can you tell us about your background outside of medicine? Where you grew up? What do you like to do for fun? [2:45] I am a native New Yorker. I grew up in NYC in Queens and had a very interesting childhood. I am bi-racial - my dad is from the Dominican Republic and my mom is American of Italian/Irish descent, so I grew up in a very ethnically diverse family and neighborhood, which shaped who I am and what I have done in my career. I have been a writer since childhood and have incorporated that into my career and leisure time. I really enjoy spending time with friends and family, and I am a mom of three pets – two cats and a dog. How did you know you wanted to be a doctor? [3:57] I really feel like medicine is my calling, and it’s something I’ve thought about since I was a kid. I was first interested in science when I was 3 or 4 and told my parents that I wanted to be a marine biologist. I was a big nerd and loved watching National Geographic specials, and I would read encyclopedias. I was always fascinated by life science. My mom actually got me interested in medicine – not because she is a doctor, and in fact neither one of my parents went to college. My mom had diabetes, but I remember helping her check her blood sugar and going with her to her doctor and seeing the positive relationship she had with her doctor and wanting to have that same positive impact on someone’s life. What was the hardest part of the med school application process for you? [5:26] I remember that it was a marathon and not a sprint. In hindsight I feel like I lived, breathed, and slept my dream of becoming a physician, which meant I was very intentional about what I did. For example, I was accepted to both a science high school and a performing arts high school. I probably would have been fine going to either, but at the time it felt do or die, and so I chose the science high school. As another example, in my first and second years of college I was working fulltime in addition to going to school fulltime so I had to make serious decisions about the type of job I took that would allow me enough time to study. So it was all about being really thoughtful and intentional about things. Every decision you make has the ability to make your path easier or more challenging. I would never want to go through the agony of being an applicant again, though the good news is it gets easier each step along the way. Being a premed student is by far the hardest. You took a gap year between undergrad and med school. What did you do and are you happy you did it? [9:00] I knew early on that clinical medicine alone would not allow me to have the kind of impact I wanted to have on my community.

Essentially an immigrant story set in the 1950's New York music scene, The Mambo Kings is also one of the few mainstream Hollywood films to highlight the Cuban/American experience, albeit without actual Cubans in the cast.  Leads Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas are Italian/Irish and Spanish respectively.  The female leads,  Cathy Moriarity and Maruschka Detmers, are American and Dutch.  The only cast members with any Cuban heritage are singer Celia Cruz and Desi Arnaz, Jr. but they each have small supporting roles in the film.   Dan and Vicky discuss the movie, based on the Oscar Hijuelos' 1989 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, and Vicky recalls seeing the film in 1992 after falling in love with the novel.  Your hosts also tell us what they've been watching recently including Showtime's Patrick Melrose, Netflix's Travelers, The Book Club, the new Leatherface movie and Hitchcock's forgotten gem I, Confess.   Feel the beat and sway to the rhythm of Hot Date 73: The Mambo Kings and leave us some feedback.  Check out our website hotdatepod.com

Compared to other well established plant-based, vegan and vegetarian cities in America, Miami may not be one that people think of as a non-meat lovers haven, but today’s guests, Alex Cuevas and Lori Zito have set out on a mission to change that. Alex is the founder and owner of Choices Organic Cafe and Lori is the President and backbone of the operations. With three locations in Miami, Alex and Lori have their sights set on opening 100 Choices locations throughout the country. Growing up the son of a Rancher in San Jose, CA, Alex ate the standard American diet of burgers and pizza as well as the rice, beans and burritos typical of his Mexican descent. But after making the connection of how the food he was eating made its way to the table he had an “awakening” and made the decision to never eat animals again. This realization would set in motion a series of events that would eventually culminate in opening a restaurant that inspires compassionate choices by serving delicious, healthy, and organic plant-based food prepared with love for people, animals and the planet. And behind every great man there is a great(er) woman; enter Lori Zito. Raised in up-state New York and of Italian-Irish descent, Lori was not always a vegan but her love of animals eventually led her to see the same connection her counterpart, Alex did. Together, Alex and Lori have helped put Miami on the map as a plant-based/vegan friendly city with their very popular restaurants and this is only the beginning for them. We are happy to share with you their story of how they turned their vision into a reality that is helping make a difference in people’s lives and our community. Michele Carlo is a writer/performer who has lived in four of the five boroughs of New York City and can remember when a slice of pizza cost fifty cents. Her memoir, Fish Out Of Agua: My life on neither side of the (subway) tracks, published this summer by Citadel Press, recounts Carlo's growing up as a double-outsider: A red-headed, freckled, English-speaking Puerto Rican in an Italian/Irish neighborhood in The Bronx before both the "multicultural" and "politically correct" revolutions. The New York Daily News said of her: "...drive, strength and honesty permeates her memoir, which is hilarious at times and dead-serious at others." The Wall Street Journalsaid: (Fish Out Of Agua) "exposes a near-extinct New York." And Bust magazine declared: "Michele's personal journey is compelling."
