In this week's episode, we take a deep dive into Grisch, the fascinating niche style gaining traction among Sweden's affluent youth. Drawing on our listeners' firsthand accounts and a century of Scandinavian cultural history, we dissect its surprisingly long lineage— from fin-de-siècle dandies and Eurotrash dudebros to gangster rappers and old money influencers—all culminating in a high-stakes world of designer denim, puffer vests, and luxury low-profile sneakers. We ponder how the complex relationship between class, age, nationalism, and masculinity embodied by Grisch might result in its global domination.Special thanks to Charles, Elsa, Justine, Iman, Matilda, Ebba, and Jesper for their insights! In this Flashback Friday episode, I revisit my 2018 conversation with Dan Schawbel, a thought leader in workplace trends and human connection. We originally spoke about his book Back to Human: How Great Leaders Create Connection in the Age of Isolation, which explores how technology can be used as a bridge—not a barrier—to meaningful relationships.Since then, Dan has continued to shape conversations around workplace dynamics as Managing Partner at Workplace Intelligence, conducting research with major brands like Amazon and Deloitte. His podcast, 5 Questions with Dan Schawbel, has featured leaders such as Richard Branson and Condoleezza Rice, and his LinkedIn Learning courses have reached over 220,000 students.Key Discussion Points The central theme of Back to Human: using technology to enhance, not replace, human connection. Why leaders need to focus on human-first workplaces to improve engagement and productivity. The benefits of in-person interaction—why one face-to-face conversation is worth 34 emails. The Work Connectivity Index—a tool for assessing the strength of work relationships. How attending events alone can be a powerful networking tool. Strategies for leveraging technology to deepen relationships rather than create distractions. The impact of remote work on workplace connection and long-term employee retention. This conversation is a timely reminder that productivity isn't just about efficiency—it's about fostering meaningful relationships. As we navigate hybrid work environments and digital-first communication, Dan's insights remain as relevant today as they were when we first published this episode.

This week Derek and Annie are joined by comedian, Conrad Molden, to tackle a source of culture clash and confusion for people moving to Denmark - Janteloven. The trio define the unofficial “Laws of Jante” and how the social code came to be so pervasive in Danish culture and Scandinavia at large. Particularly, the ramifications for international residents of Denmark are explained. Is Janteloven good for Denmark? Does it adversely impact foreigners living in Denmark? What are the pros and cons of this social code of conduct? This episode will give you a deeper understanding of the concept and its place in Danish society. Through these discussions, you'll have a better understanding of how Danish culture is shaped by Janteloven, a satirical outtake from a fiction book. Nordic society seems to be governed by a set of unspoken rules on how to behave around others. These rules or "laws" were first articulated by the Danish author, Aksel Sandemose in a novel that described life in a fictional town called Jante, ruled by a set of ten laws. The laws dictated that no one was to be boastful, to think they are more special than anyone else, not to imagine themselves as better than anyone else. They were known as Janteloven, or the Laws of Jante. Sound familiar? Have any relatives that strictly mind their own business, don't gossip, and don't bother anyone else while passing on the street? If Nordic people all behave this way (and they don't), how does that affect society innovation and initiative, especially in business? One person who has thought about Nordic society is Fiona McKinna, an immigrant from England who produces the podcast and blog, Living a Nordic Life. Join us as we talk about the ramifications of Janteloven, delve into Nordic sociology, and about the way people behave in Nordic countries today. Special thanks to her for sharing her perspectives. LINKS A nice summary of Jante's Laws, including a list of all 10. From the Scandinavian Standard, Feb. 2023. Fiona McKinna's Living a Nordic Life website contains a plethora of delights, from the podcast to recipes, blog, ecourses, with associated Facebook group (for which you need to sign up). Paul Anderson, a Lutheran pastor ("Lutheran Renewal"), wrote an essay called Breaking the Stronghold of Jante that I found interesting. I'm not explicitly supporting nor disagreeing with his ideas, but I found his perspecitve from "inside" the Lutheran church interesting. The Knitting Cruise from Kragerø among the islands of the SE Norwegian Coast (Telemark), mentioned by Fiona. They advertise that you can "enjoy the view of the beautiful archipelago, knit and have a good time". M. Michael Brady wrote a short article, Rules that Restrain, in the November 2018 issue of the Norwegian American. If you are blocked from viewing the article, you may be encouraged to subscribe to the paper (both paper and digital versions) at very reasonable prices, in my opinion: $70/year for the print + digital subscription, or $30/year for digital/online only. The Norwegian American has articles about all of the Nordic countries (not just Norway) as well as Scandinavians abroad. Full disclosure: I am a contributing author for the Norwegian American. If you're so inclined, a translation of Sandemose's A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks (Internet Archive, open source) can be read online. I've heard it described as bitter and unhappy. Oddly, there's a Forward ("A Note") by Sigrid Undset at the beginning which is rather sobering about how far reaching Jante's Laws are. She is an author I respect (e.g. Kristin Lavransdatter), and she was very keen on observing how society works. A plaque of Aksel Sandemose and his 10 Janteloven (above), based on his book A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks (En flyktning krysser sitt spor), 1933. The plaque is displayed in the Danish town of Nykøbing Mors where Sandemose grew up, upon which he modeled his fictional town of Jante. Rather ominous to have these ten laws posted right there in the the town....unless of course everyone agrees with them! A couple of English expressions. In this podcast, Fiona uses a couple of expressions that I think are more common in the UK than in the USA, so I thought I'd explain them. 1) Fiona says "they looked at me as if I were a nutter". This isn't that far from Amercian English expressions like a nutcase or completely nuts. My British dictionary says nutter means someone who is silly, strange, or crazy; synonyms include whacko, flake, oddball, or lunatic. An excellent word! 2) Fiona mentioned "living an A-four life", suggesting this was a fairly bland and uneventful type of life. I learned she was referring to "A4", a standard, paper size (210 x 297 mm) used in almost every printer and copy machine outside of Canada and the USA. In the USA, the sheets of paper are usually slightly larger at 8.5 x 11 inches (215.9 mm x 279.4 mm), called US letter size. So an A4 life is one neither extravagant nor lackluster, but regular and common. Perhaps meets the definition of lagom, neither too big nor too small? Is this a new expression for you? It sure was for me.
Cat, Charles, and Richard are back again as they chase the provenance of historical objects both real and metaphorical. This week on The Rabbit Hole Detectives, Richard is hoping he won't have to pack his bags as he researches the history of luggage, Cat is looking into something ever so Scandinavian as she covers the Law of Jante, and Charles is hoping to hop, skip, and jump into the lead with his topic - Morris Dancing.

OK, maybe 107 reasons is a bi9t of an exaggeration. But we do have some great reasons why more women need to play golf and a bunch of ideas on how to make it easy for them to get started with the game. Our guest is Janet Miller, President of the Louisville Chapter of the LPGA Amateur group, formerly know as the EWGA. Jante's local Louisville group has an open house here in Louisville on Sunday March 19th and everyone in the area is invited to attend to check out the group. Jeff talks about how easy it is for women to get started by attending a group golf clinic designed to introduce women to the game. We also discuss how golf seems to make it hard for women to get into the game; talking about how intimidating a golf course can be to not only women, but to all beginners in golf. Another great episode this week from Those Weekend Golf Guys, the 2nd best golf show in the world.
Today I will talk about, compare and contrast, and give you my commentary on two cultural norms that, in many ways, have formed the social and political climate in Sweden and the US. This will provide insight into why Swedes and Americans are the way they are and explain many difficulties one may experience when moving from one of the two countries to the other. It will also give my perspective on how I live at the crossroad of these two norm systems. And the two are The Law of Jante in Sweden and the American Dream in the US. What The Denmark | Danish Culture for Expats, Internationals and Danes
We're back with Season 3! In this episode we tackle Janteloven or "The Law of Jante". In 1933, a Danish-Norwegian author called Axel Sandemose wrote a book describing a fictional town in rural Denmark. The people of the town were very set in their ways, and didn't like it when individuals tried to break from the norms, or think that they were in any way special. This fictional (satirical) piece of work has come to define how many in Scandinavia see their lives today: people are sceptical of individual success, and prefer to "be average" rather than aspire to stand out from the crowd. Of course, it's not that simple, but knowing about this undercurrent of conformity can help explain why people in Denmark are seemingly content (or frustrated by!) following the crowd. We are joined by writer Michael Booth (author of The Almost Nearly Perfect People) and also speak with Søren Ledet, co-founder of Geranium, a Danish restaurant that has been voted as the best restaurant in the world. Michael shares his experiences of getting to grips with Janteloven and even learning to love it (on occasion). In the episode we reference this article he wrote for The Guardian that caused a bit of a storm. Søren discusses how breaking free from Janteloven has allowed Geranium to achieve the next level of culinary greatness, but still without fully discarding the central law of Jante - "You are not better than anyone else". There's much that's discussed on the pros and cons of social conformity, as well as many anecdotes from life in Denmark. We hope you enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This episode is sponsored by the State of Denmark's "Talent to Denmark" campaign. Denmark is actively looking to attract international talent to move to the country.

In today's episode, I will take a closer look at the law of Jante which I just mentioned in my last episode. The law of Jante is an unwritten law that in so many ways has colored the Scandinavian countries, our societies, and our behavior. The law of Jante comes from a novel by the Danish-Norweigan author Aksel Sandemose in his novel “A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks” from 1933. In this novel, a young man returns to his home, a village called Jante, which is ruled by the law of Jante. The law is actually ten laws that can be summed up in one sentence. You're not to think that you're anyone special or think that you are better than us. And if you go against this law, you are looked upon with suspicion and hostility. And the purpose of the law is to preserve social stability. I will look at how this law has formed me as an individual, and how moving to the US, which is very much the opposite of the law of Jante, has changed me in some ways, but how at the same time I still have to suppress a lot of the effects it has on me.
