TikTok might soon be facing a choice: Divest from its Chinese Communist Party-controlled parent company, or cease to operate in the U.S. “This is not about the content that is being posted on TikTok,” Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, says. “It's about the conduct of the company that controls TikTok, that makes the decisions, that has a narrative that is able to use Chinese Communist Party propaganda through the platform, if they so choose.” ByteDance is TikTok's parent company. It's headquartered in Beijing and subject to Chinese law that requires companies to make data available to the CCP. The House is set to vote Wednesday on a bill designed to prevent foreign adversary-controlled applications from operating in the U.S. Some are referring to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act at the “TikTok bill,” since it would prevent TikTok from operating in the U.S. if the company does not break from ByteDance. The bill received bipartisan support in committee and is expected to pass the House. Pfluger joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why TikTok poses a national security threat to the U.S. and whether he thinks the bill will receive the same bipartisan support in the Senate. Following the conversation with Pfluger, Jake Denton, research associate in the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation, joins the show to explain how the app would effectively be banned in the U.S. if the bill does pass and TikTok refuses to divest from its CCP-controlled parent company. As the war between Israel and Hamas rages on, Jake Denton, research associate for The Heritage Foundation's Tech Policy Center, breaks down what the role of artificial intelligence has been in the conflict. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)“I think the one that everyone jumps to is the [artificial intelligence]-generated content, deepfakes, things of that nature,” Denton says. “There's a few stories of synthetic audio recordings of a general saying that an attack's coming or those types of things that we've even seen in the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” Denon says. “They go around on Telegram or WhatsApp.”“They're taken as fact because they sound really convincing. You add some background noise, and suddenly it's like a whole production in an audio file,” Denton adds. “And typically, what you're picking up on in a video is like the lips don't sync, and so you know the audio is fake. When it's an audio file, how do you even tell?”Denton also highlights social media platforms such as the Chinese-owned app, TikTok. “And so, what you're seeing right now, especially on platforms like TikTok, is they're just promoting things that are either fake or actual real synthetic media, like a true deepfake from the ground up and altered video, altered audio, all these things are getting promoted,” Denton says, adding: And kids, at no fault of their own, are consuming this stuff, and they're taking as fact. It's what you do.You see a person with a million followers that has 12 million likes and you're like, “This is a real video.” You don't really expect these kids to fact-check.Denton joins today's episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to also discuss President Joe Biden‘s executive order on artificial intelligence, what he views as social media companies' roles in monitoring artificial intelligence and combating fake images and videos, and how people can equip themselves to identify fake images and videos online. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spent the weekend in Tel Aviv, meeting with Israeli officials as he crafts a bipartisan resolution that aims to financially support Israel and condemn Hamas for their brutal attacks. However, as the conflict between Hamas and Israel intensifies and innocent civilians continue to die, what else can the U.S. do to put a stop to this catastrophic violence? On the Rundown, Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) discusses how involved he believes the United States will get in this conflict and why ensuring Iran stays out of it is crucial to deter "a broadening" of this war across the Middle East. And I think that the shock factor has gone away, because we just keep seeing it happen. If you're looking for one element of the [document] drops that kind of stand out from all of them, [it] is the correspondence trying to take down a meme, which kind of just shows you the comedic scale that this has reached, where you have government employees whose daily job is to scroll through Facebook [and] Twitter and critique a meme's role in the information environment.Mark Zuckerberg heads Meta, parent company of Facebook. Entrepreneur Elon Musk, who bought Twitter in October, recently renamed it X.Denton joins today's episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the secrets exposed by the “Facebook Files,” why Americans should be concerned, and what the revelations say about the relationship between social media companies and the Biden administration. President Joe Biden's youngest son, Hunter Biden, is expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of tax evasion on Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware. Hunter Biden has been the subject of a federal investigation since 2018 for his foreign business practices, and Republican lawmakers argue that the Department of Justice has given the president's son special treatment during the investigation. One example they point to is the fact that Hunter Biden has already reached a pretrial agreement for a felony gun charge for possessing a firearm while addicted to drugs. On the Rundown, Andrew McCarthy, FOX News Contributor and former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, explains why Hunter Biden wasn't charged with a felony, shares why he thinks the President's son received preferential treatment, and compares the investigation to the Hillary Clinton email scandal.   Artificial intelligence has grown increasingly popular as Americans incorporate programs like ChatGPT and facial recognition into their everyday lives. AI uses are countless, and law enforcement is using the tool as well. Police are finding new ways to utilize artificial intelligence and facial recognition for "predictive policing," which uses AI to analyze crime patterns, police body camera footage, and surveillance footage to predict and solve crimes. Though many are optimistic this could be helpful, some Americans are worried it could lead to privacy concerns or wrongful arrests. On the Rundown, Heritage Foundation Tech Policy research associate Jake Denton joins to discuss why "oversight and transparency" are key to assuring AI is used responsibly, the science behind how the technology could catch criminals, and the potential shortfalls that could come with relying on it too heavily in an investigation.     Plus, commentary from host of OutKick's Tomi Lahren is Fearless, Tomi Lahren. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic of conversation across the globe right now but who is standing up to make sure that it's in the best interests of humans? In this week's Respect Life Radio, Deacon Geoff tackles the topic. "Think about artificial intelligence (AI) as social media on steroids - 10 times the impact that social media had on our society is what AI does. It will truly redefine the way that we live. There is nothing we can do at this point to go away from AI. It's arrived and it's here and we have to do everything we can to make sure it's in service of us and it doesn't do things that are against the best human interest for us," posits Jake Denton, Research Associate in the Tech Policy Center at the Heritage Foundation. "Ultimately, our regulators need to understand that and they need to be proactive. The question really becomes - who is going to be willing to do something about it?"  Follow The Heritage Foundation https://www.heritage.org for more information about the future of AI and big tech and follow Jake directly on Twitter at @RealJDenton

Congressional lawmakers introduced bipartisan legislation Tuesday aimed at banning the social media app TikTok nationwide.“TikTok is digital fentanyl that's addicting Americans, collecting troves of their data, and censoring their news," Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., said in a press release. "It's also an increasingly powerful media company that's owned by ByteDance, which ultimately reports to the Chinese Communist Party—America's foremost adversary.” Gallagher introduced the legislation with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill.The language of the bill says its goal is to “protect Americans from the threat posed by certain foreign adversaries using current or potential future social media companies that those foreign adversaries control to surveil Americans, learn sensitive data about Americans, or spread influence campaigns, propaganda, and censorship.”Jake Denton, a research associate in The Heritage Foundation's Tech Policy Center, weighs in on the legislation and its goal in this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast." (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news organization.)"This bill is essentially building off the momentum that these state governors have had in the last few weeks we've seen. I believe we're close to almost 10 governors now who have banned [TikTok] from government devices," Denton says. "And I think the question for all these Americans is, well, if it's unsafe for these government employees, right, we don't want it on their phones. [So] why is it OK to be on our phones? And more specifically, why is it OK to be on our kids' phones?" Denton asks. On the podcast, Denton discusses the legislation to ban TikTok, whether he believes it's likely to become law, and the app's impact on users. Hosted on Acast.
