In this episode of #Hashtags, Gartner analyst Jay Wilson discusses trends in agency spend, roster consolidation, and marketing sourcing strategies. How should CMOs evaluate their agency rosters in the context of these trends and ongoing budgetary pressure? He works with clients on their social media marketing strategies, including influencer and employee advocacy programs. Jay led social marketing efforts at a large digital advertising agency in New York, with hands-on experience in the airline, consumer packaged goods (CPG) and high-tech industries.

There's been a lot of discussion recently about boosting Guelph's tourism profile. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, cities are working hard to rebuild their shattered tourism industries and Guelph is no exception, which is why the City of Guelph this week launched the Tourism Grants Program, designed to support the development and attraction of new tourism initiatives across Guelph. So here's an idea... Last fall, Guelph Politico explored the possibilities of dark tourism in Guelph for a special Halloween episode of the show. The Royal City, with its relatively sunny disposition and progressive appeal, doesn't look like a bastion for all things morose or macabre, but that's the candy coating for a seedy underbelly. And, as a bonus, Guelph is already well on its way to being a dark tourism hotbed. Our thriving dark tourism industry is largely grassroots. It's people like Greg Taylor, and Jay Wilson, and Bonnie Durtnall, people who have turned their fascination with the dark corners of Guelph into a lucrative side hustle. But would it surprise you to know that the University of Guelph actually has a professor who studies dark tourism? Perhaps he might be able to answer this question: Is Guelph a dark tourism hot spot and we don't know it? This week, we're joined again by Brent McKenzie, who is a professor in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. He will give us a formal definition of “dark tourism” and talk about the local examples of the trade. He will also talk about the grassroots nature of dark tourism, whether dark tourism can go “too far”, and some of McKenzie's favourite dark tourism experiences whether they're in Guelph or not So let's talk again about Guelph's dark tourism future on this week's Guelph Politicast! There are many ongoing local dark tourism experiences in Guelph including Ghost Walk of Guelph, Jaywalking with Jay Wilson and his performance of “The Unfortunate Man” for which you can fine tickets at Eventbrite, and a wide variety of history walks and tours with Guelph Urbex. You can find information about the Tourism Grants Program at the City of Guelph website. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today, we are taking a ride on the the way-back machine as guest Jay Wilson takes us to the UNH college campus and tells us about his second show–April 11, 1994 at Sively Arena.1994 was a pivotal year for the band in so many ways. In addition to this spring tour promoting Hoist–which was produced to be their most commercially viable album–the band was really showing off their schizophrenic musical style, combining absurdity with prodigious talent, and they were making the final leaps from large theaters to amphitheaters, at least in their most popular markets. Places like The Beacon Theater in New York would soon be replaced by Madison Square Garden, and this was when New England was still their stomping ground. By 1995 virtually all of New England would be left behind, except for the occasional stop.Today's conversation touches on virtually all of those aspects of 1994 Phish. But there's much more to it than that. Let's join Jay to talk about New Years Eve shows, falling in a hole, and jazz, as we discuss Phish's show from April 11, 1994 at Snively Arena.

Maybe you've heard the term "dark tourism", there's a whole Netflix series about it, but you don't have to go abroad to somewhere famous to get a taste of dark tourism. Would it surprise you to learn that we have a hot little dark tourism industry right here in Guelph? As we approach Halloween on Tuesday, perhaps it's time we appreciated just what kind of a sorted little town we have here, historically speaking. Now there's an actual definition for “dark tourism” and we will get into that in the podcast, but what's interesting about dark tourism as it pertains to Guelph is multifaceted. First, the City of Guelph has been dedicating time and resources lately to developing a tourism strategy, and the focus has been on some of the usual suspects like sports tournaments, music festivals, and classical heritage like Catholic Hill. Second, our thriving dark tourism industry is largely grassroots. This week, we're joined by Brent McKenzie, who is a professor in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. He will give us a formal definition of “dark tourism” and talk about the local examples of the trade. He will also talk about the grassroots nature of dark tourism, whether dark tourism can go "too far", and some of McKenzie's favourite dark tourism experiences whether they're in Guelph or not. So let's talk about Guelph's dark tourism future on this week's Guelph Politicast! If you're interested in some local dark tourism experiences, there's no shortage of things to do this Halloween week. Ghost Walk of Guelph will be running walks from Thursday to Saturday at 8 pm. Jay Wilson will be leading one more walk this season with his performance of “The Unfortunate Man” on Friday at 7 pm, and you can get tickets at Eventbrite. You can check out a wide variety of history walks from the OR lands to Guelph's hidden burial grounds with Guelph Urbex. And finally, local historian Bonnie Durtnall will talk about her new book Haunted Guelph at the main library on Thursday October 26 at 7 pm. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Did you know Hot Air Brewing was originally a Hallmark store? Katie took the old Hallmark store, with apartments located above the brewery, and turned it into her dream brewery. Katie Davidson wanted a place in her hometown where anyone and everyone could gather for a drink, so she created one. Hot Air Brewing in Creston, Iowa has become a popular brewery with 13 different beers on tap with various styles. Katie has been dedicated to supporting her hometown and growing the craft beer community in her city with new craft beers. Katie and her head brewer, Jay Wilson, have made an impact on the Iowa beer community. Jay worked with the Iowa brewers guild while also helping to grow the Iowa Craft Beer Festival. More than 80 breweries and cideries can be found at the Iowa Craft Beer Festival with more than 300 craft beer samples this June. Jay has also created several craft beers of various styles at Hot Air Brewing and one of them can even be found at the airport!

What grabs you as a kid listening to songs on the radio may still grab you as an adult... but the nuances often come out after you've had years to process them, all informed by life experience. This was true for Rob and Steely Dan's 1972 debut record Can't Buy a Thrill. It was an album he immersed himself in his twenties during his first flush of CD buying. But as a little kid, the big radio singles sounded weird and even terrifying – and sometimes hilarious – to him. So, what's the real identity of the music beyond what listeners hear in it wherever they are in their lives? It's a big question. Of course, as always, music is weird, with a lot of it splitting rooms and creating friction among otherwise friendly discussions between music fans. Does that play out here among the Deeper Cuts trio? Where do they stand on the Steely Dan divide? Where do musical expectations come into this discussion of how we hear music from one point in our lives to another? And what of this album, specifically? Is it a thrill? Or do the Deeper Cuts Trio not buy it? Not going to click to find out? C'mon. Only a fool would say that (just kidding, please click). The music from every episode this season can be found our Spotify Playlist. Also, don't forget to talk to us on Twitter (@deepercutscast) and to rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts! In this episode, Gartner analyst Jay Wilson discusses how marketing leaders are in a position to influence their organization's approach to internal diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), while ensuring those efforts are accurately represented in marketing communications. As an increasingly diverse customer base demands that the brands they buy from take action on DEI, the CMO must advocate for that mandate internally. In doing so, a CMO can improve her influence within the C-suite, while making a positive impact on marketing and business outcomes. Success depends on new approaches to hiring, retention, agency selection, and — ultimately — marketing that is more relevant and representative of our world.Jay Wilson focuses on helping CMOs achieve optimal results from their agency rosters, including agency selection. He works with clients on their social media marketing strategies, including influencer and employee advocacy programs. Jay led social marketing efforts at a large digital advertising agency in New York, with hands-on experience in the airline, consumer packaged goods and high-tech industries.
We've talked about a lot of heavy stuff on the podcast this year - the pandemic, sexual violence, trans healthcare, mental health and reconciliation all to name a few. So before we take a summer break* it felt like we needed a safe space, somewhere serene where we can get back to nature and just talk like two people. In other words, we just need someone to tell us a story. This week's guest is Jay Wilson who's an actor, puppeteer, elocutionist, vaudevillian, writer, producer, and director. You or a friend may have been on one of his Jaywalking tours, a storytelling series where Jay almost literally takes you on a walk through Guelph's history. Wilson had a long and varied career in live theatre before he retired and started Jaywalking in 2019, and becoming one of Guelph's premier storytellers. Even the pandemic couldn't keep Jaywalking down! On this podcast, Wilson will talk about how he got into storytelling, and how he crafts his set list depending on the crowd. He will also discuss what makes a good story and what makes a bad story, and Wilson will talk about how the pandemic affected the storytelling business, and his preference for performing in-person. Wilson will tell a couple of stories; something for the parents with “Strickland's Storm”, and something for the kids with “Francis O'Feline”. Let's set the scene: This podcast was recorded live at Riverside Park, which is the first time in two years that an episode of this show was recorded with two people in the same space. The choice of location is very particular because the enabling garden inside Riverside Park is often a stage for storytelling with Tea ‘n' Tales, and Wilson has often performed there. Tea ‘n' Tales is coming back to the garden on September 2, and Wilson will be there, so this week's podcast might best be seen as a kind of warm-up act. So let's get into story time on this week's Guelph Politicast! To learn more about Jaywalking, or to book a private show for your event, you can visit Jay's website here. It's not too late to still get on the waitlist of the “Gwelf Early Days” performances for the Guelph Public Library on August 16. *Programming Note: Guelph Politicast will return with new episodes on Wednesday August 31. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, Stitcher, Google, TuneIn and Spotify . Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.
