"Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career and in the work that I do now with my foundation." Bill Gates is many things: visionary computer programmer, co-founder of Microsoft,  American billionaire, philanthropist....and also a prolific reader. Gates, who has been known to read 50 books a year, credits some of his biggest ideas to reading. When it comes to reading, there are many books that we as planners are told to read but there are few planners I've seen actually apply what they've read to their work. And that's the magic of Jeff George, who is the Founder and Freelance Strategy Director at The Courage Lab and also, of course, a prolific reader. Listen to this week's GrowOp to find out how you too can use reading to power your planning.

For two years, twin brothers Chris and Jeff George along with their friend Derik Nolan, ran the largest pain clinic in the United States. They didn't really care about alleviating people's pain. They cared about the profits selling opioids could make. Florida's laws didn't address the fact that none of the men had any medical training to help addicts. They had no training in counseling to help addicts. They were in it because the money was big. Unfortunately, the addictions the drugs fueled were even bigger. This week's guest, Christina Dent, founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. She hopes that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She is currently writing a book on the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist. Christiana and I had an incredible conversation, and what I learned made me think a lot about 1 Peter 5:8 from the CEV, which says: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Keeping ourselves sober in the sense of being clear minded applies to us all. The enemy of our souls is actively searching for ways to destroy us like the lions we see on the Discovery Channel. They don't chase after the strongest gazelle in the herd. They want to find one who is weak, who is apart from the support of the herd, and isn't able to notice the danger they are in until it's too late. Addiction to ANYTHING can cloud our judgment and make us vulnerable to the evil that is in this world. I say this a lot when I'm giving safety information to people - criminals are looking for the easiest targets they can find. They don't want problems, they want to give YOU problems. We have to be watchful like Scripture says, and that's hard to do when our senses are dulled and we allow ourselves to be distracted. And yes, I said “allowed” ourselves. We can learn to focus on what we really need to and block out all of the rest, like service dogs do. I've put a link to a video of dogs being trained to ignore loud noises, toys, and even snacks so they can protect the person they are going to be caring for. Maybe we need the same training to become the best service people we can be! Just for fun, I've also put in a link to a service dog in training who we all probably look like at one time or another. -The premise of the article was what conversations are probably happening on message boards for various B1G teams as we head into summer, and Nebraska's says “Jeff Sims is who Adrian Martinez was supposed to be” -Is that something that fans think of Sims? Or that this offense is going to be friendlier for the QB than Scott Frost's? Interesting conversation. -How much running is too much running for a quarterback in a football game? -Can Nebraska put a conventional run game together? Do they have the guys to take the pressure off of the quarterback? -If the program leans on Sims too hard and he goes down, this team will have a lot of problems! -Also, the article says that Illinois might have their best QB since Jeff George, Iowa won't score points, Minnesota CAN throw the ball…and more -Northwestern is bringing in a very young and inexperienced staff, Sip says they won't win four games Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKING/MIDWEST BANKAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It was retelling the stories of those consumers that became a powerful way to sell innovation ideas at a critical time, especially when it came to key decision-makers and executives.  Jeff also talks about the ways in which we can use the past to inform the future, how failure is a necessary part of the innovation process, and why it's important to celebrate productive mistakes bypassing the lessons along to the teams we lead.

You can always tell when a guy is the best athlete at a small Iowa high school on a football Friday night by looking at the program. The key is to start by looking for the QB. A standout athlete will also have a defensive position. But two other letters, K and P, really show a guy that does it all on the field. When you see something like QB-DB-K-P, you can assume the coach is leaning on his stud. This week's Moonlighter takes it to a new level as a 5 sport varsity letterman at Maquoketa High School: football, basketball, tennis, track, and baseball. Sage Rosenfels's athleticism took him from smalltown Iowa to an 11 year NFL career. After a successful career in just about every sport Maquoketa offers, Sage took the only major football scholarship offer he received, even though he had never been on the Iowa State campus. Sage took over the starting QB role in his junior year with the Cyclones after only tallying 4 wins in his first two years in Ames. With Sage under center, Iowa State had 4 wins in the 1999 season. Sage reached legend status by leading the Clones to their first-ever bowl win in the Insight.com Bowl to cap a 9-3 season. Sage was drafted in the 4th round by the Washington Redskins in the 2001 draft. Coming off of two successful seasons as the starter for the Cyclones, Sage was brought in to be a back up for Jeff George. Sage had a very successful career as a back up in the NFL playing for Washington, Miami, Houston, Minnesota, and the New York Giants. He played behind some absolute greats, including Brett Favre, but Sage was a really effective QB when he had his shots. In 43 career games (12 starts), Sage threw for over 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. Sage is a great storyteller and takes Tim into the quarterback rooms and onto sidelines with incredible details from his playing days. Football took Sage from Maquoketa to Ames and across the NFL. In that time he played with and for countless household names and has stories to share about Dan McCarney, Jeff George, Marty Schottenheimer, Nick Saban, Jason Garrett, and many more.  Whether you are a Cyclone fan or just a football junkie, Sage will have you drawn in with the incredible details he shares.

Those were the famous words of one Jeff George when he was the starting QB for the Washington Redskins, circa 2000. Of course, for HIM, leadership wasn't over-rated. He needed to show some of it, if nothing more than to dilute his earned rep as an aloof mullet wearing slinger. Aaron Rodgers, however, doesn't need to prove anything. Which is why him playing anymore this year, is madness. But.... looks like the madness is going to happen. There's a big announcement buried in this episode, plus a little "easter egg" of a hint. Don't say I didn't tip you off!
