Writer/director Jeff Greenstein (Will and Grace, Desperate Housewives, Friends) joins us again this week to unpack an album - and artist - that continues to get him spectacularly high: 'Big Science' by avant-garde titan Laurie Anderson. This weirdly wonderful, surprisingly catchy selection of musical highlights from her eight-hour production United States Live was ahead of its time in 1982, and STILL resonates today. Welcome to the future! Songs discussed in this episode: O Superman - Ilmiliekki Quartet; Mr Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra; What Time Is It - Ken Nordine; Title Music from A Clockwork Orange - Wendy Carlos; 3 Dances - John Cage; From The Air, Big Science - Laurie Anderson; This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads; Sweaters - Laurie Anderson; America Is Waiting - Brian Eno and David Byrne; Walking & Falling, Born, Never Asked - Laurie Anderson; Four Organs - Steve Reich; O Superman - Booka Shade; O Superman, Ethics Is The Esthetics Of The Few-Ture - Laurie Anderson; O Superman (Live 1997) - David Bowie and Gail Ann Dorsey; Example #22, Let X=X, It Tango, Walk The Dog, 1983... There's the old saying "If you're going to shoot the king, don't miss..." In a recent episode of a rival podcast, shots were fired at the Camerosity crew, especially Mike for a perceived slight given by us. War was declared and many casualties were sure to ensue. Would the world's first and only open source photography podcast respond? Of course we would! In this, the 67th episode of the Camerosity Podcast, Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike have some good natured fun at the expense of Jeff Greenstein and Gabe Sachs of the I Dream of Cameras podcast. Throughout the episode we make repeated jabs at them, some obvious, some very subtle, can you spot them all? Of course, this IS the number one open source film photography podcast, so we did eventually get on track with the exciting return of Mr. Rick Oleson, which we haven't seen since way back in Episode 2. Rick is a master repair technician, who most recently became well known in the film community for a line of improved Bright Screens which can be adapted to a wide variety of medium format SLR and TLR cameras. Joining Rick and the Gang are returning callers, A.J Gentile, Eric Jason, Ray Nason, and Tim Peters. During the show we spend a great deal of time learning about Rick and his history repairing cameras and how he got into making the Bright Screens. If you thought you knew everything there was to know about focusing screens, you really need to listen to this episode as Rick puts on his cap and gown and schools us on how focusing screens work, why the Bright Screens are better than the stock screens, why you cannot simply cut down his screens to 35mm, and why focusing screens in the auto focus era were brighter than in the past. We talk about Fresnel patterns and the advancements made throughout the 20th century to make your viewfinders brighter, and how to install a new screen in large format cameras. In addition to everything you didn't know you needed to know about focusing screens, Rick raves about a strange camera called the Continental TXL which he was amazed both at how simple it is, yet how good it is. Paul and Mike talk more about the upcoming Cincinnati camera show and how Mike is bringing over 13 boxes of cameras to sell and Paul has at least another 10 or so more. Mike talks about a recent trade with a UK camera blogger, and Rick talks about restoring a classic Mercedes Benz 450SL. This was definitely an odd episode, produced during the stress of an ongoing war with another podcast, yet we managed to squeeze in a huge amount of information you won't find on any other podcast out there! Even if learning more about focusing screens doesn't sound like a great way to spend 90+ minutes, you'd be surprised at how interesting it all is. Meet Paul and Mike: If you are in the vicinity of Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, March 23rd, come to the Ohio Camera Swap at the Hilton Garden Inn Cincinnati/West Chester and say hi to Paul and Mike. While you're there, maybe you can buy something from us! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. The next episode of the Camerosity Podcast will be recorded on April 1st, aka April Fool's Day, so if you thought episode 67 had a lot of silliness, wait until you see what we have in store for the next episode... To be perfectly honest, we have no idea what we're going to talk about, but hey, it's a made up holiday dedicated to pranks, so we are sure to have some fun! We will record Episode 68 on Monday, April 1st at 7pm Central Daylight Time (-5 UTC), 8pm Eastern Daylight Time (-4 UTC), and Tuesday at 11am Australian Eastern Daylight Time (+11 UTC). This week on Just Jack & Will, Sean & Eric have breaking news: Will's lost his job! Karen's on a budget! They talk about Rush, their choreographed dances, the last ride of Gary Grubbs as Harlin Polk, and just how much money is flying around in this episode. Then, senior writer and later showrunner of Will & Grace, Jeff Greenstein joins them to talk about the original draft of this script, and just how collaborative the writing process was. I guess there's no arguing with frontier logic. Have a question about Will & Grace, especially Season 2? We want to hear them! Returning guest, television writer, producer and director Jeff Greenstein (Will & Grace, Friends, Desperate Housewives), makes the case that Electric Light Orchestra were - at their core - a fantastic 'singles' band. This week we are joined by writer and producer of such shows as Friends, Will and Grace, and Desperate Housewives, Jeff Greenstein to talk about the stretch of Ventura between Whitsett and Laurel Canyon!
Emmy-winning writer Jeff Greenstein (Friends, Will & Grace, Parenthood, Desperate Housewives) knows a thing or two about comedy. So it's no surprise that a record that got HIM high as a young impressionable adolescent ALSO made him laugh. A lot. The songs on 'More of Tom Lehrer' by singer-songwriter/satirist Tom Lehrer combine wickedly-clever wordplay with an absurdist - at times dark - sense of humor that clearly influenced Jeff's future work. "And we will all go together when we go..." Songs featured in this episode: I'll Be There For You (Theme from 'Friends') - The Rembrandts; Sail Away - Randy Newman; Country Song (Pandering) - Bo Burnham; Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, Bright College Days, National Brotherhood Week - Tom Lehrer; Stein Song - Rudy Vallee; Homeward Bound - Tufts Beelzebubs; Land Of The Glass Pinecones - Human Sexual Response; A Christmas Carol - Tom Lehrer; O Tannenbaum - Vince Guaraldi Trio; The Elements - Tom Lehrer; I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General - Gilbert & Sullivan; Oedipus Rex, In Old Mexico, Clementine - Tom Lehrer; Clementine - Jan & Dean; It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier, She's My Girl - Tom Lehrer; Rockaway Beach - Ramones; Crazy - R.E.M.; Venus In Furs - The Velvet Underground; The Masochism Tango - Tom Lehrer; Kiss Of Fire - Caterina Valente; We Will All Go Together When We Go - Tom Lehrer; My Bologna - Weird Al Yankovic; Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life - Eric Idle; We Will All Go Together When We Go - Red Leicester Choir

We’re on a break at the moment but I thought it would be interesting to revisit this episode from four years ago, our end of the year 2016 wrap up, featuring a bunch of different interviews touching on the big stories in music of the year, including the traumatic aftershock of the US election and the creeping dread of the incoming Trump administration, and the realisation that 2017 maybe was going to be getting worse not better. Thankfully I feel like we’re coming out of this particular hell year of 2020 with a more optimistic outlook on the next year, so I’m posting this today as a way of reflecting to some extent on the horrors of the last half decade and also a feeling that we might be turning at least one page onto a better future now... ------- 10 conversations about the highs and lows of music in 2016: Emmy winner Jeff Greenstein (Friends, Will & Grace) on when David Bowie guest starred on his first TV sitcom. How Melbourne indie soul band Cookin’ on 3 Burners had a smash hit on the French dance charts with a seven year old song. Americana singer/songwriter Melody Pool on finding her way back to her darkest emotional places to write her stellar album Deep Dark Savage Heart. ARIA-nominee Lisa Mitchell on struggling with how to listen to music in the modern age. Nashville-based Aussie ex-pat Emma Swift on being artistically radicalised by the election of Donald Trump. Filmmaker Brian Koppelman (Billions, Rounders, Ocean’s 13) on what music to listen to to get through the Trump blues, and what to expect from music in the coming years. Crowded House guitarist/keyboardist Mark Hart on the inside story of their triumphant reunion shows at the Sydney Opera House forecourt. You Am I guitarist Davey Lane on a year of playing with his living heroes and paying tribute to his dead ones. Singer/songwriter Alex Lahey on writing some of the year’s best songs for her debut EP and what to expect from her imminent debut album. Host Jeremy Dylan reveals his 10 favorite albums of 2016.

Today we’re bringing you the first in a new regular feature on the podcast. Once a month, I’ll be joined by a guest from music, movies, politics, literature or more, but not to discuss their favorite album. These will be compelling conversations about their favorite film, or book, or maybe even important world events. Today, friend of the show, Emmy-winning writer/director Jeff Greenstein (Friends, Will & Grace, Mom, Desperate Housewives) returns to delve into the eerily relevant 1976 Alan J Pakula classic thriller ‘All the President’s Men’, which tells the true story of how Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke open the incredible Watergate scandal and helped bring down President Richard Nixon. We talk about the film’s commitment to truth and authenticity, the blending of real archival footage with actors playing real people, how Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman compare to the real life Woodward and Bernstein, differences between the book and film, the way Deep Throat has entered the pop culture lexicon, screenwriter William Goldman’s contentious relationship to the project, the comparisons and differences to the film ‘The Post’ and how to make a thriller compelling when everyone in the audience knows the ending.

Seven years and 300 episodes of the podcast in, we are marking the occasion with an epic three part celebration of my favorite albums of the past decade. Music journalist Caitlin Welsh joins me to criticise my taste and banter about the first three records on my list, and I'm joined by the artists behind those records - Dan Kelly on the rollercoaster of Dan Kelly's Dream, Margaret Glaspy on her undeniable Emotions and Math and Gang of Youth's frontman Dave Le'aupepe on their life-affirming masterwork Go Farther in Lightness. Plus we check the voicemail to hear from friends of the show Jim Lauderdale, Holiday Sidewinder, Kristina Murray, Chris Hewitt and Jeff Greenstein on what their favorite albums of the past ten years have been, and debut our special new theme song by the genius Matt Farley. Check back soon for part 2 of our 300th Episode Spectacular!
We begin to celebrate the holidays by bringing on writer Jeff Greenstein (Friends, Desperate Housewives) to talk about our favorite depressed icon Charlie Brown and his classic seasonal specials. If you are a fan of Christmas, Great Pumpkins, the holidays or even just the comic strip then this is the episode for you. So bang on the piano, do your little dancing and enjoy the episode!
This month’s dead pilot is over ten years in the making. It’s called The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud and was written by Jeff Greenstein (Will & Grace, Parenthood, Desperate Housewives). The story centers around Penelope Cloud, a woman who who has been struggling for 15 years to deliver the follow-up to her celebrated first novel. In that time, she's become dependent on a cocktail of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications to get through the day. The story begins when Penelope, desperate to unblock herself, decides to go off all her meds at once and rejoin her life, already in progress. Andrew sat down with Jeff to talk about the ups and downs of developing this project for over ten years. From shooting a pilot for CBS starring Marisa Tomei, to writing six episodes of it for Amazon that were ultimately passed on after a heated back and forth. Jeff also talks about his experience staffing on shows like Friends, Desperate Housewives, and Will & Grace, and his path into becoming a sought-after television director. It was a colorful and at times emotional conversation about a pilot that was really put through the ringer. Enjoy! The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud stars Michaela Watkins as Penelope Cloud, Jon Cryer as Dr. Birkin/Passenger/Student, Mary McCormack as Eva, Daniel David Stewart as Ivy, Malcolm Barrett as Claude, Nichole Bloom as Geogia/Counselor, Felicia Day as Kendall, Navid Neghaban as Dr. Hakim, Kelsy Sandoval as Adoración, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. Let’s face it, we’re right at the beginning of “Dessert Season," cold weather, family gatherings, ski-vacations…it lasts until we start thinking about bathing suits and beaches sometime after Valentine's Day. After a little dessert-directed Day Drinking featuring Stone Brewing Co’s Seasonal Chocolate/Chili/Spice/Coffee Beer, “Xocoveza” and Handmade, Barrel-Strength Bourbon from Noah’s Mill, Strauss and Phelps sit down with Lisa Ritter, one of the founders of LA's beloved “Big Sugar Bakeshop” (and a really great story-teller). We taste and talk about the sweet stuff and hear about Lisa ’s journey from being raised in a food-centric, Jewish/Italian family to the surprising, even to her, beginnings of Big Sugar. She'll share her recipe for Old-Fashioned (and amazing) Banana Bread and a few great secrets to REALLY EASY Cookie Pie Crusts. Oh, and Strauss and Lisa explain the wonders and complexities of catering “Abondanza" style…something they each learned in their own way from Lisa’s mother, (and pro-caterer) Carol Ritter. Additional guest appearance from Friends writer/producer, Jeff Greenstein (who also happens to be Lisa's husband). Day Drinking: Stone Brewing's "Xocoveca" - a winter-spiced mocha stout, and Noah's Mill handmade, small-batch Kentucky bourbon. It’s a 'Friends' reunion! We are joined by Jeff Strauss’s college buddy and for many years, his writing and producing partner, the award-winning Jeff Greenstein, the original "Other Jeff." In this week’s episode, Strauss and Greenstein, who co-wrote the very first 'Friends' Thanksgiving episode, share never-before-revealed secrets behind “The One Where Underdog Gets Away." You’ll hear the hilarious and horrible, real-life story from Strauss’s life that inspired that much-loved, Emmy-nominated holiday tale. You’ll also learn the surprising inspiration for Monica’s need to keep everybody happy with potatoes. An exploration of Greenstein's childhood in suburban Atlanta and his comical “food-rules” lead to a discovery and a dare as Phelps and Strauss make Greenstein eat a food he has never tried before. What more could you want? A little eating, a little drinking, great stories from behind the scenes at one of the biggest hit TV shows ever — and a food called “Orange Carnage." Emmy winning writer/director Jeff Greenstein (Desperate Housewives, Friends, Will & Grace) returns to the show for a deep dive about one of rock's most iconic bands, The Who, and their strange 1966 LP 'A Quick One'. We talk about how the album was a transition from the band's R&B beginnings to their concept album period, the influence of the Who's unconventional managers Lambert & Stamp, why every member of the band wrote songs on this album, the mini-opera title track, the relationship between Daltrey and Townshend and how Jeff almost had the Who appear in a TV show he wrote. Jeff is a successful writer, producer and director who has had a major hand in shows like, oh, I don't know, maybe you've heard of a little something called Friends? Will & Grace, hmmm? Desperate Housewives, anybody? And most recently, as a director, a big part of the multi-cam hit Mom. But Jeff's path to showbiz is unique in that, early on, he had zero inclination to be in the creative arts. So how did an Atlanta-born computer science nerd-to-be end up going to college in Boston to major in Film and Dance, land in Hollywood writing for television and being a part of some of the most-watched ("Must See") TV of all time? Well, you have to listen, dammit, to get that answer. Jeff's take on being open to adventure, trying new experiences, learning everything you can about anything/everything is inspiring, hilarious...and exhausting - only because his exuberance and lust for life makes me feel like a lazy, good-for-nuthin' slug. There's a LOT to dig into here; Jeff is warm, open, super-ultra-smart and funny as hell. (And, yes, there's a monkey. And Jennifer Aniston. And Italian Cinema references.) Enjoy! -LM

Emmy winning writer and TV director Jeff Greenstein (Friends, Will & Grace, Desperate Housewives, Husbands) beams into the podbooth from LA to chat about a cult classic of post-punk, Young Marble Giants 1980 album "Colossal Youth". How did a Massachusetts teenager at university discover a Welsh indie band? What makes the album so sonically distinctive? How did it influence Nirvana and Kurt Cobain? Why did Jeff pitch a book about this album to the 33 1/3 series? Why did the band break up? and does knowing more about the behind the scenes of albums and art like this enhance or hinder the experience?
