Once upon a time, there was a boy, the son of a pimp and whose mother who used to work for that pimp as a prostitute. Since he was born in 1971, his parents' union would have been a crime just four years earlier because his father was black and his mother white. Yes, there were horrible, racist laws in place until 1967 that attempted to prevent such interracial unions. He was raised at times by his mother, sometimes by another non-parent adult, and sometimes on his own as a mere child caring for his own siblings. One of 23 siblings, he had a rough childhood full of traumas and challenges that probably most of my listeners have never experienced. He would a GED and his formal education would stop there. Can you see him in your mind's eye? Where do you imagine he is today? I can tell you that he imagined he'd be dead by 25. Instead, he's the CEO of one of the best businesses in America and was named Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year for 2022. It was an honor to connect with JeVon McCormick (https://jevonmccormick.com/), CEO of Scribe Media, a multimillion-dollar company ranked #1 for corporate culture by Entrepreneur Magazine. He's also the author of two books I devoured in record time. The first, his management book called Modern Leader and the second, his autobiography, I Got There: How a Mixed-Race Kid Overcame Racism, Poverty, and Abuse to Arrive at the American Dream. I loved both books, and so have thousands of readers including retired Navy Seal turned ultra-athlete and bestselling author, David Goggins, who wrote the foreword for Modern Leader. In our interview, JeVon generously and openly shares his story as well as his take on leadership that has made him one of the top leaders in business today. You'll get his take on what businesses need to do to grow to their fullest potential while doing what is right for society. So, listen in as JeVon shares about where he came from and what it takes to be a modern leader. Book Links: I Got There: https://tinyurl.com/33faevtw Modern Leader: https://tinyurl.com/4kknnmfu

I could not wait to talk again with JeVon McCormick. On our new season, I am joined by Ellis Fitch and Anthony Garone. We dive into JeVon's second book, Modern Leader, including a chat about the foreword written by the one and only David Goggins. JeVon talks about how that came about. We dive into a substantial moment in JeVon's life, and part of the motivation for his latest book. Making the decision to go by JeVon instead of J.T. (which you'll hear him referred to in our season 1 interview here), he talks about "the broken playbook" that we all play by, and how he made the decision to own his full name, and what he hopes to see by doing that. Allen talks about a story in the book about a drive JeVon took with his dad through an area of River Oaks, and how some of those moments motivated him to write this latest book as well. JeVon talks about who he specifically wanted to reach with this message. Allen mentions a phenomenon that JeVon brought up in the book about shaming people for asking questions. JeVon talks about the responsibility of people to teach rather than to take the position that it "isn't my responsibility to teach them".  Ellis and JeVon dive into DEI initiatives (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), particularly within publicly traded companies, and JeVon talks about how some of the intentions are misguided. JeVon talks about some interesting examples about changing the playbook, and cites the example of the change of leadership and pattern of succession at TIAA-CREF, and how now Thasunda Brown Duckett is the current CEO. Anthony asks about what practical top-down solutions  companies can put in practice to affect real change to the broken playbook. Thanks for listening to this episode. Episode 135 – True Modern Leadership with JeVon McCormick   We are delighted to speak with an amazing individual today! JeVon McCormick is a phenomenal person and an incredible leader! He is the CEO of Scribe Media and the author of the bestselling book Modern Leader.  JeVon is top-ranked with Glass Doors and received Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year. He was named Best CEO in Austin and Best Culture Company in America! He joins us today to talk about his personal and professional life, share his experience, and discuss his take on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We hope you enjoy listening to today's inspiring conversation with JeVon McCormick! About JeVon JeVon McCormick was born the son of a Black pimp father and a white single mother on welfare. Poverty, abuse, eviction, and discrimination were a daily part of his life. Today, he's the CEO of Scribe Media, a multi-million dollar publishing company that was recently ranked the #1 Top Company Culture in America by Entrepreneur Magazine. JeVon's experiences shaped a mindset for modern leadership that now guides his service as the CEO of a massively successful company that's redefining the world of publishing. JeVon's journey JeVon's mother grew up in an orphanage. She had JeVon when she was still technically a child herself. Growing up in the 1970s was hard for JeVon because he was half black and half white and never felt he belonged. He was always trying to fit in. He got molested as a child and was in and out of juvenile prison. He never graduated from high school and had to attend summer school to get his GED. A game-changer JeVon's dad drove him through a very affluent Houston neighborhood when he was about ten. He had never seen homes anything like the ones he saw there before. It was a game-changer for him because it showed him what was possible. As a result, wealth became his goal. His first job JeVon's first job after getting his GED was cleaning restaurant toilets. After about a month, he decided to make them the cleanest toilets in Texas. Then he resolved to be the best at whatever he did from that moment forward! What's in a name? After struggling for some time to get a better job, JeVon thought people were reluctant to hire him because he had a black name. So he began to go by JT McCormick. A week later, callbacks, invitations, and appointments began flooding in. From then on, he built his career on the name JT McCormick.   Reclaiming his name  After the murder of George Floyd, JeVon realized that changing his name made him part of the problem. So he reclaimed his name for all the kids with ethnic names living in similar communities to the one where he grew up. Jevon's credo Jevon lives by putting people first. He believes in people, processes, and profits and feels that people should use their profits to do great things for the communities they live and work in. Awards JeVon is grateful for and proud of his awards. However, he finds it interesting and quite funny that we celebrate CEOs when CEOs are only as good as those they serve and support. CEO A CEO is a foundational piece of any company. Their role is to serve and support everyone else. They should never make decisions to benefit themselves. Covid Modern leadership got tested during Covid because there was no playbook for the virus. Covid revealed the difference between true leaders and playbook leaders. Even before working remotely became a thing, JeVon told his people to take whatever they needed from the office to build a comfortable workspace at home. He also announced that no salaries would get reduced, and no one would get laid off. DEI JeVon does not see DEI as an initiative because diversity has no start or finish. He feels it should be referred to as diversity, equity, and inclusion rather than DEI because actually saying the words opens up a real conversation. He also points out that most Fortune 500 chief diversity officers are black women, many of whom are now coming out and saying they are getting no support in moving their DEI initiatives forward. Modern leadership JeVon has been a successful leader because he puts people first and does things differently. He does not want to recruit and retain people. He prefers to attract great people and provide them with a phenomenal culture, meaningful work, and great salaries.  Language Much of the language used in business today comes from an antiquated playbook. People don't realize that some of it even comes from the plantation business model. For example, referring to people as “human capital”, or “greatest assets”, implies human trafficking or slavery.  Respect As Americans, we need to respect others, listen to them, and seek to understand their lived lives. We need to ask questions and learn from others.  History Rather than being destroyed, offensive statues should be placed in museums because they are part of history and serve to educate future generations.  Do the right thing Seek to do what is right for all people. Do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do. Don't do it for a buy-in or something that might be in it for you.     Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website   Connect with JeVon McCormick On his website On Instagram      On LinkedIn         On Youtube             On Twitter             On Facebook           On TikTok   Scribe Media

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” — Michael Jordan JT McCormick has overcome a lot of obstacles. I mean, a LOT of obstacles. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview and develop a relationship with him. His mother was an orphan. His father was a pimp and drug dealer. Upon being deserted, JT was forced to live with his father's prostitutes for years, taking care of his younger step-siblings. He was only 8 years old. He received his High School diploma from the janitor during summer school. He was homeless, living on a park bench. Talk about adversity, huh? JT then got into sales. He was the lowest paid employee and, within 2 years, became the President of the company. He is now the President & CEO of Book in a Box. He is business partners with Tucker Max. How did he do it? How did the overcome the odds and become an inspiration to everyone he comes from? “Life truly is mindset and choices” — JT McCormick JT's mindset has helped him to improve his craft and become a tremendous leader. This mindset helped him become resilient through tough times. It's also what helps him to display servant leadership. An example of this is shown when he talks about his co-workers. They aren't his employees. “We're a tribe”, he says. “People work with me, not for me”. This type of leadership mentally, highlighted in Simon Sinek's book Leaders Eat Last, has driven his tribe forward. Though his mindset is strong, it's his actions that truly separate JT. He didn't become this way through luck; it was through old-fashioned hard work. For example, his day starts at 3:45 am. He spends this early morning time reading and studying past entrepreneurs and businesses to learn from their paths. This is all in an effort to maximize his time before his family, and the rest of the world wakes up. JT says that life is full of choices. “You have to sacrifice. Don't run from it — everyone has to sacrifice something”. Take a page from JT's book. How can you develop a tougher mindset? And how can you take more action? These are two things that are in your control and can make the ultimate difference in your success. “I don't wish. I don't hope. I don't get lucky. I believe in myself and execute”. We also went back to our interview with Jevon McCormick (who you may remember as the son of a pimp and a orphan) and his life-changing story on how if you can see your goal, you can achieve it. We touched on the importance of roadshows and how vital they can be to building your brand and discussed whether buying groups or the Vegas market are worth the continued investment. Finally, we round out this year by discussing innovation and how we can use it to meet consumer needs—though it is useless if we aren't using the data to improve our products—and how outsiders coming into the industry need to make sure not to make these fatal mistakes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mattresspodcast/message

This episode of The Jake Dunlap Show features JeVon McCormick, President & CEO at Scribe Media. JeVon was born in a time when being born of a black father and white mother was illegal. He grew up under tough circumstances, from the fact that his father was a pimp and his mother was an orphan on welfare, to racism which saw him unaccepted in both the black and white communities.JeVon shares pivotal moments in his life, from learning about entrepreneurship from prostitutes, to learning about compound interest cleaning toilets, to impressing his boss enough to shoot up to vice president of Payday Loans, and meeting Angelo Mozilo of Countrywide Financial.JeVon also shares his own formula for success. He keeps it simple and sums it up with mindset, choices, and hard work equals success. It is this formula which allowed him to overcome the circumstances he was born into and turn it completely around.QuotesJeVon : "He would say, 'don't be common in the way you walk the corner. Don't be common in the way you dress. Don't be common in the bed.' And that's what he would preach to the prostitutes. But we would hear it so often, it made its way down to me. So for me, don't be common meant, okay, do shit different than everybody else."JeVon: "When I was a kid, my dad shared with me and some of my siblings, he said, I don't care what you do in life, whatever it is, be the best at it. And his exact words were, if you were going to be a street sweeper, be the best street sweeper. Now he could have given us a little more to aspire to, but I got the point was be the best."JeVon: "The common thread is I always outworked everyone. I've never been afraid to work. I've never been afraid to ask questions. I've never been afraid of someone saying no to me. No, just meant not right now. I'll just come back next week, next month, whatever. So, I keep going."JeVon: "Confidence is a choice. You can choose to wake up and be timid and meek, or you can choose to wake up and be confident. And, for me, many a day, man, confidence was all I had. Confidence was free and the confidence got me through the streets. It got me out of a lot of ass kickings."JeVon: "I created a formula for myself, mindset, choices, and hard work equals success."More about JeVonJeVon is 1 of 23 children and is the son of a black pimp and a white mother who lived on welfare. Arguably, his circumstances almost dictated that success was not for him. But JeVon is living proof that what you you born into does not define you.JeVon was not afraid of working and, as a matter of fact, outworked everyone else so much that he impressed his bosses enough that they opened up new opportunities for him, opportunities that were simply not available to anyone else in a similar stature as he was back then. His first job was cleaning toilets of a restaurant, then he moved on to crunching numbers in proofing reports. He was outperforming the office record so much that his then boss brought him in to ask what he really wanted, to which he replied he wanted to be vice president. And he got it. He joined the company when it had 3 offices and left it with 8, thanks to him. He's made millions in the stock market (even though he didn't go to college), he was the President of a software company (even though he can't code) and he's currently the CEO of a publishing company (even though he can't spell). JeVon also devotes part of his time mentoring and creating opportunities for at-risk youth, young men and women in the juvenile justice system, and those in lower economic communities.Find out more about JeVon in the following links:Website: https://jevonmccormick.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/jevonmccormickscribeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jevonmccormick/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jevonmccormickscribeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jevonmccormick/Amazon Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/Got-There-Overcame-Poverty-American/dp/1619615568Learn more about Jake Dunlap and Skaled by visiting the links below:Jake Dunlap:Personal Site - http://jakedunlap.com/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakedunlap/Twitter - https://twitter.com/JakeTDunlapInstagram - http://instagram.com/jake_dunlap_Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/JakeTDunlap/Skaled:Website - https://skaled.com/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/skaledYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsw_03rSlbGQkeLGMGiDf4Q

JeVon "JT" McCormick was born the mixed-race son of a drug-dealing pimp father and an orphaned, single mother on welfare. He was raised in the slums of Dayton, Ohio, suffered incredible abuse and racism, and had multiple stints in the juvenile justice system. He barely graduated high school and has no college degree. He started scrubbing toilets, hustled, and worked his way into the banking and mortgage industry. He did really well… until the mortgage industry fell apart, and he lost his job — and all of his money. He had to borrow from his friends to make rent. JeVon springboarded to even bigger heights. He made millions in the stock market and eventually became President of two multimillion-dollar companies.  Now, JeVon is the President and CEO of Scribe Media. This publishing company helps people write, publish, and market their books. They have worked with over 1,900 authors, including David Goggins, who has sold over two million copies of his book, Can't Hurt Me. JeVon is the author of the book I Got There: How a Mixed-Race Kid Overcame Racism, Poverty, and Abuse to Arrive at the American Dream. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Megan, and their four children. In this episode… Think about this for a second: any chance that a boy who is one of 23 children born to a poor pimp and drug-dealing father will escape crime and poverty? Not only did today's guest JeVon McCormick go into juvenile detention more than once, but he barely graduated high school. He had every reason to fail and stay poor, but… JeVon made it out. He started to work his way out of poverty by scrubbing toilets, learning about stocks, and eventually making a lot of money. Unfortunately, he lost it all. But that didn't deter him from starting over and becoming the President and CEO of Scribe Media. How has JeVon braved the odds to get to where he is today, and what lessons can you learn from his journey?  Listen to this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast with Dr. Jeremy Weisz featuring Scribe Media's President and CEO, JeVon McCormick. They peel back the layers of JeVon's heart-wrenching childhood story, the force behind JeVon's choice to lead a better life than his upbringing (or lack of it), and how he emerged the President of two multimillion-dollar companies after losing all his money. Possibility Opens Your Eyes You can only aspire to what you see and know is possible, JeVon tells Barry. He shares that a drive through an affluent community as a child was the beginning of his mindset shift. “It showed me possibility, and that was very key,” he comments. A big problem in lower economic communities is that many people there don't know all the options that exist. “When I was shown possibility, that was game-changing for me; even though I didn't know how I was going to get there, it showed me possibility, and it was up to me to go figure out [how to] make that happen,” he says. [Listen from 2:00] Be Consistent In a society of instant gratification, the importance of consistency is often downplayed. However, JeVon tells Barry, what helped him improve his circumstances and his life overall was his commitment to never stop trying. “The biggest thing was I was always consistent,” he remarks. He kept learning from his mistakes and improving on his strengths. He posits, “I truly believe you only fail if you stop trying.” Barry adds that society rarely talks about the hard part of consistency: getting back up after getting knocked down, or holding on when it seems more sensible to let go. [Listen from 8:35] How Conscious Capitalism Can Change Lives Barry sees JeVon's work in conscious capitalism as a great juncture of his ethics, mindset, and entrepreneurialism. He asks him what inspired him to get involved in the space. Society demonizes capitalism, JeVon replies, but it has tremendous power to change lives: “Capitalism has provided me with the life that I have right now, and I truly believe that if more people from the lower economic communities that I come from knew the power of capitalism, that it could also change their lives.” Conscious capitalism is about taking capitalism to the communities where it can really make a positive impact. He shares an example about how retailers like Whole Foods could help change generational poverty by opening stores in lower-income neighborhoods. More than just creating jobs in these communities, they would be creating possibility, so younger generations would now have more to aspire to. [Listen from 22:20] Looking Ahead JeVon is excited about doing his part in making a racially just society. He explains why he now goes by JeVon instead of JT. “I made the decision for every kid named RayVontae, Martavias, Lawanda, Lacresha; and I did it with the intent - in the belief - that one day when they hit corporate America, that maybe they can work next to a JeVon and not just a JT.” He's about creating real, tangible change: not just attracting diverse persons, but creating a culture of belonging so everyone feels welcome and respected in the workplace. Barry comments that we have to call out inequality, talk about it, so we can start the change.
