Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast
ANDOR Season 2 is just around the corner! But where did we leave off with Cassian and friends in Season 1? After all, it was 3 years ago. What really happened between ISB agent Dedra Meero and Imperial wanna-be Syril Karn? How was Maarva Andor weaponized? If you don't remember, we are here to remind and prepare you for this new season that premieres on Disney+ on April 22nd. There is lots to go over especially how ANDOR crosses over with STAR WARS REBELS. We also look back at our roundtable interviews with Production Designer Luke Hull and Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson to see how their creations will add to the storytelling of ANDOR Season 2. Today in Star Wars History 4/15/1963 Happy 63rd Birthday to Tom Kane! Tom Kane voiced hundreds of animated characters in dozens of series. To Star Wars fans he is Yoda and Admiral Yularen in The Clone Wars and did the opening newsreel narration for each episode. He also voiced Admiral Ackbar in The Last Jedi and Star Tours. Unfortunately Tom Kane had to retire from voice acting in 2020 after a stroke. SPONSORS Small World Vacations is an official sponsor of Skywalking Through Neverland. In March 2020, students across the country shifted to an unprecedented learning model as they logged onto their computers to attend classes on Zoom, forcing educators to quickly rethink how to effectively teach students in this new paradigm. As our education institutions worked to shift their models, the longstanding flaws and inequities in our system were put on full display. Now, more than two years later, we're grappling to fully understand the impacts of this disruption to student learning. What has happened to our students over the past two years? What have we learned from this experience? And what changes are necessary in order to prepare today's students to succeed in this fast-changing world? Over the next few weeks, we will be talking with education advocates, researchers, and change agents working to rethink our education system and provide better opportunities and outcomes for all students in a special series called “Catalysts for Change: What Is World Class Education?” In this first episode, Jill is joined by Tom Kane, Walter H. Gale Professor of Education and Economics at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Tom was a guest on this podcast as the pandemic was just beginning and we're excited to have him on again, this time to talk about his new research on student learning loss across the country. Danny and Kevin travel back to Middle Earth. This time, The Two Towers is reviewed as it celebrates its twentieth anniversary. The duo avoid talking about how awesome The Battle of Helm's Deep sequence is for as long as possible and break down this middle chapter that balances a ton of walking with a ton of swords. You will hear orc and Uruk-hai quotes that are not drops, but are instead provided by Danny himself. Eat your heart out, Tom Kane! Please note that this episode also features an appearance by a word that is far more socially acceptable in the British Isles than it is here in the former colonies.

“We had such potential. Such promise. But we squandered our gifts, our intelligence. Our blind pursuit of technology only sped us quicker to our doom. Our world is ending. But life must go on.” In this episode, we discuss Shane Acker's post-apocalyptic animated feature: 9, as well as briefly review the films we logged on our Letterboxd dairies in the past week. — TIME CODES: • 00:00 - INTRO • 01:32 - BASIC FACTS • 03:41 - THE MEAT • 42:03 - WHAT WE WATCHED — 9 (2009) WHEN OUR WORLD ENDED, THEIR MISSION BEGAN. “When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good.” Directed by Shane Acker and starring Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau, Fred Tatasciore, Alan Oppenheimer, Tom Kane, and Helen Wilson. Written by Pamela Pettler and Shane Acker, edited by Nick Kenway, cinematography by Kevin R. Tom Kane, an American education economist from Harvard, describes the urgent need to address pandemic learning loss while federal recovery funds are available to support states and districts. He argues that district leaders need to be transparent with parents about what it's going to take to get students caught up and discusses what research shows is effective in helping them do so.

This week on the Total Movie Recall Holiday Special, Steve and Ryan visit the mopey, gothy early 90s when Generation X looked to the high school Gloom King Tim Burton to express their so dark vision of Christmas. Stop motion animation is such a labor intensive craft that creates beautiful visions that aren't all that interesting, which is going to enrage a bunch of high school Wiccans that love this movie. It does look great, though. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) d. Henry Selick Starring: Danny Elfman Chris Sarandon Catherine O'Hara William Hickey Paul Reubens The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the "real world." When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life -- he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. This week on Total Movie Recall, we find a new zest for life in 2001's Amelie. Steve gets wistful recalling his time working in a porn shop, and Ryan reveals his ignorance about Paris. But is it ignorance? Don't we kind of all know what Paris is really like? Smelly and smoky and rude? Not according to Amelie. Paris is a place of magical realism, true love, and tastefully decorated porn shops. Amelie (2001) d. Jean-Pierre Jeunet Starring: Audrey Tautou Mathieu Kassovitz Rufus Jamel Debbouze Isabelle Nanty Dominique Pinon "Amélie" is a fanciful comedy about a young woman who discretely orchestrates the lives of the people around her, creating a world exclusively of her own making. This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan stare into the eyes of a childless middle age and watch 1987's Raising Arizona. Steve has a good laugh watching what he sees as a silly, light comedy and Ryan is gripped by yet another existential crisis watching a moving meditation on fatherhood, adulthood, leaving the reckless ways of youth behind, the crushing weight of responsibility, and conquering your demons. Oh to have the weightless, carefree, burdenless mirth that Steve enjoys! We should all be so lucky. Raising Arizona (1987) writers/directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen (The Coen Brothers) Starring: Nicolas Cage Holly Hunter Trey Wilson John Goodman William Forsythe Sam McMurray Frances McDormand Randall "Tex" Cobb Fast-paced farce about an unlikely pair who go to extreme lengths to have a child. When an incompetent robber marries a policewoman, they discover that they are infertile.
