“Just be who you are. Just be Mo.” That's exactly what Ms. Monét did when she took the stage in 2020 at the World Expo in Dubai. When the audience rushed the stage she discovered how powerful her performances could be and now refers to them as a ministry. Ms. Monét shares with Jeanne the thought process behind her newest single; why seeing a woman in her 50s succeed in this industry is important for so many other women; why she kept returning to regular 9-5 jobs between singing gigs; why you just have to say “no” sometimes; and why it's so important for her to continue to make her mother proud. Born as Conesha Monét Owens, this Bay Area native was touched with the gift that only God could provide: the gift to truly move people. Given the talents of all that performing arts can give, including improv and dramatic acting, dance/choreography, topped with a 5-octave vocal range in modern and classical music, it's no wonder this "gifted" singer-songwriter, arranger, and thespian has been sought after by some of the industry's best, most diverse and accomplished artists and producers. Some include producers Walter Afanasieff, Patrick Leonard, Steve Jordan, and the great Phil Spector. Ms. Monét was one of the top 24 and first ever "Super Saves" on Season 24 of NBC's award-winning show "The Voice.” She recently released a single called “Celebrate” and is currently a radio personality for KUNV. From being a core member of The Bop Stop's longstanding Jazz Unit in the mid aughts, to his work with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Howie has spent thirty years as a performer and educator. For more than twenty five of those years, Howie taught a class at Cleveland State University called Jazz Survey, which was an introductory course for non-music majors. The final class of that course was an hour-long, completely improvised solo concert based around whatever was in the classroom at the time. This week, Howie presents an example of this, which his students have called a ‘Concert in Progress.' From December 10th, 2022 it's Howie Smith, completely improvised and solo – Live at the Bop Stop. Nevada's second special legislative session of 2020 drew some contentious discussions - about criminal justice reforms (lawmakers didn't think they went far enough, but voted for the bill anyway), about DETR (technical fixes that most lawmakers can't even name), about voting (that's clear, but the president seems to think it isn't) and about COVID19 liability protection. That last bill, SB4 - which was first argued into the wee hours of the night - drew the most astonishing admission of the session, when Governor Steve Sisolak's General Counsel Brin Gibson said the bill - which did not include the input from hospitals or schools or the small business community - did include the “important members of the Nevada economy.”Meaning resort/casinos. And Culinary workers.Hospitals were specifically left out of liability protection for COVID19. Lawmakers continuously asked why, but the closest they got to an answer was this from Gibson:"There's a potential that this deal falls apart if we started amending our certain provisions in there and for reasons that might not be obvious, some are messaging related, some are optical related, some are substantive." Assemblyman Glen Leavitt of Boulder City couldn't even get Gibson to say who was in the room negotiating the deal.
Carrie Kaufman and Andrea Cole talked to Nevada ACLU policy director Holly Welborn and Clark County deputy chief public defender, and former Assemblyman, John Piro about their bid to get non-violent prisoners released from county jails and state prisons. Conditions in prisons, they argue, don't allow for social distancing.
