Kassa Overall - John Coltrane (Clifford Jordan Quartet) (feat. Tomoki Sanders & Vitamin D) from the 2023 self-released album Shades 3. The ever-talented jazz musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer Kassa Overall dropped the latest addition to his Shades mixtape series, Shades 3, in February as a sample-heavy remix project that fuses jazz with modern danceable drum machine rhythms in a gonzo approach to the jazz tradition. The Seattle-raised, Brooklyn-based artist has been blowing minds to a wide audience of fervent fans since the release of his acclaimed sophomore record I Think I'm Good in 2020 and this project does not disappoint. Our Song of the Day reimagines the Clifford Jordan Quartet's 1974 track “John Coltrane” with the help of New York-based multi-instrumentalist Tomoki Sanders on Tenor Sax and Derrick Jabar Brown, better known as Vitamin D, on vocals. “Welcome to the Upside Down” introduces the song before going into a profession for the love of jerk chicken. Over a warbling brass line, manipulated vocals cry out “Black spirit” while Vitamin D spits a verse about Black power and the incredible endurance and accomplishments of Black folks despite the many obstacles thrown at them. Below, watch Kassa Overall's KEXP in-studio performance from 2020 and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to episode 61 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be discussing Kaoru Akimoto's 1968 album, “Tenor Sax Mood White Christmas.” I've collected a variety of things throughout my life. No matter what I've been collecting at the time, I've always had a handful of items that seemed just beyond my reach. In each case, I've managed to get at least a couple of those things I never thought I'd own. Sometimes, they turn out to be a huge disappointment. Luckily with my record collecting, each of the albums I've gotten that I never thought I'd own have lived up to or exceeded my expectations. Whether it's been Kaoru Akimoto, Jun Fukamachi, Chiemi Eri, or any of the others that either seemed to rare or expensive for me to get, or that one collector or another had told me to not even bother looking for because, they assured me, I'd never be able to get—they've all turned out to be at least as good as I was hoping. I hope you've found Kaoru Akimoto to be as satisfying an album as I did. It's a wonderful album and one I've listened to more than a lot of the others, mainly because of how early I got it in my collecting. As I said in the episode, though, there are a lot of even more spectacular albums out there. I've only covered a handful of the best ones so far, and the best ones truly are yet to come. Join me back here next week when I discuss Niw! Records' 2010 compilation, “We Wish You A Happy.” It's a fun, more contemporary album and one you're sure to enjoy. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
As broadcast October 2, 2022 with plenty of heartfelt joy and mystery for all of our aching hearts. Tonight, we pay tribute to Pharoah Sanders and his unbelievable six decades as one of the world's most talented and innovative tenor saxophone players by doing the only thing we know how, which is play music. It's hard to encapsulate a man as futuristic, cosmic, and spiritual as Sanders, who started in music with John Coltrane's band back as a young man in the early 1960's, but we needed more than the alotted time of two hours to even come close to doing so. Thus, we played some of Pharoah Sanders' most enduring work for the full two hours of regular programming, and added an extra hour to let his final goodbye play out uninterrupted, which was our 2021 album of the year in Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders and The London Symphony Orchestra on the Promises LP. In parts 3 and 4, we eschewed any type of interference with the music here on the streaming form of the show and just did simple intros at the start so that the music could speak for itself, and of course, Promises is totally without intro, interjection, or any noise aside from its own. Rest In Power, Pharoah Sanders. Have fun playing in the cosmos where you truly belong.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Pharoah Sanders - Love Is EverywherePharoah Sanders - You've Got To Have FreedomPharoah Sanders - Astral TravelingPharoah Sanders - Wisdom Through MusicPharoah Sanders - Love Is Here (Live In Paris, 1975)Part II (38:04)Pharoah Sanders - Greeting to Saud (Brother McCoy Tyner)Alice Coltrane feat Pharoah Sanders - Journey in SatchidanandaPharoah Sanders - SelflessnessPharoah Sanders - ElevationPart III (77:12)Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity Part IV (1:53:03)Pharoah Sanders - The Creator Has A Master PlanPart V (2:27:30)Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - PromisesFloating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 1Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 2Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 3Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 4Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 5Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 6 Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 7Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 8Floating Points with Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Movement 9

We've made it to 99 episodes (!) and what a better way to hit that mark then with an EXTRA special conversation, only available on The House List. So who better to sit down with than the highly revered yet largely unknown Godfather Don. In what marks his first real, long-form interview - Don is extremely cool, affable and open. And that was mostly talking about music (we hoped and plan to get a more esoteric, next time)! He has been a personal favorite of mine for a long time. A lifetime resident of Brooklyn, we discuss it all. Picking up a guitar as a small child, to making beat-tapes with a guitar pedal. Many where introduced to Don's seminal work on Ultramagnetic MC's 'Four Horsemen' (Wild Pitch 1993) album, others with his actual debut 'Hazardous' (Select 1991). He had a prolific run doing the indie/underground boom between labels Fondle Em and Hydra, which resonates widely to this day (seen in the many limited reissues of his work). Yet all the while, Don has seemingly been shrouded in mystery. Now, Don is a actively performing Tenor Sax player around BK. He's recorded a new Jazz project, I saw him play - he's amazing. It's a fantastic transition into a different musical horizon. I highly suggest watching or listening, when you have the ability. I am needing to get our SoundCloud page to 100,000 streams - so please listen to this over and over and share/repost where you can! Thank you for supporting!
