Lauren Hough is living a remarkable life. Author of a collection of essays called “Leaving Isn't the Hardest Thing”, Lauren causes us to consider what IS the hardest thing? Growing up in a doomsday sex cult? Joining the Air Force and almost getting court-martialed? Going to jail? Traveling around the country in a van with her dog? Being a 6 foot lesbian? We caught up with Lauren, all jet-lagged from a trip to Paris, to talk about writing, religion and cheese. Caution: some spectacularly colourful language. Lauren Hough defies categorization so we're not going to even try. Born in Berlin, raised in 7 countries as part of a cult known as the Children of God that robbed her of an education and any sense of self or family, Lauren eventually found her voice. Her memoir has won numerous literary prizes. She's also the author of Bad Reads, an Substack journal both random and profound, and utterly addictive. You can watch this episode on YouTube. Lauren Hough is the author of the New York Times bestseller, LEAVING ISN'T THE HARDEST THING, a collection of essays about growing up in the abusive Children of God cult, coming out in the military, and piecing a life together, as Roxane Gay put it, “on the margins as a working class woman and what it's like to grow into the person you are might to be.” Jen caught up with Lauren before she headed out on the road with her dog, Woody to research her next book MONSTER OF A LAND. Though she pressed, Jen was not able to get Lauren to spill the details on what is (or is not happening) with the screenplay about her memoir LEAVING ISN'T THE HARDEST THING. However, they did get into other personal topics from social media mobs to drug use to their in-person meeting in 2021 (after covid vaccinations) and a stuffed animal known as lamby. The audiobook of LEAVING is narrated in part by actor Cate Blanchett, who is also reportedly the owner of the film rights. First time ever, I've let a guest name their own episode!  I'm really hoping you buy her book! ;-) It will help you--I'm sure. I know it. Do the hard things. Do what scares you. Be strong. Fight for yourself. Fight for what you need. Be a proud, boss-bitch who gets things done. Like Holly! A true SHERO! Holly Tarry is a writer, coach and activist specializing in helping women dismantle the patriarchy in their own lives and minds. Through a very intense period of personal change, she confronted a childhood full of gender roles and polite racism, joined a grueling public fight to have an elected official expelled from office for sexual harassment, remodeled her marriage, and built a totally new relationship with herself. She lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, with her husband, son and 4 adopted pets. In this week’s Book Club podcast Sam's guest is Lauren Hough - author of an outstanding new collection of autobiographical essays called Leaving Isn’t The Hardest Thing which describe a life that took her from growing up in the Children Of God cult via being discharged from the US Air Force and jobs as a bouncer in a gay bar and a “cable guy” on the road to being a writer. She talks about not writing a misery memoir, what elites don’t know about working class life, “lesbian drama”, and the benefits of revising your work on magic mushrooms.

Searing and extremely personal essays from the heart of working-class America, shot through with the darkest elements the country can manifest - cults, homelessness and hunger - while discovering light and humour in unexpected corners. As an adult, Lauren Hough has had many identities: an airman in the US Air Force, a cable guy, a bouncer at a gay club. As a child, however, she had none. Growing up as a member of the infamous cult The Children of God, Hough had her own self robbed from her. The cult took her all over the globe - to Germany, Japan, Texas, Chile - but it wasn't until she finally left for good that Lauren understood she could have a life beyond 'The Family'. Along the way, she's loaded up her car and started over, trading one life for the next. She's taken pilgrimages to the sights of her youth, been kept in solitary confinement, dated a lot of women, dabbled in drugs and eventually found herself as what she always wanted to be: a writer. Here, as she sweeps through the underbelly of America - relying on friends, family and strangers alike - she begins to excavate a new identity even as her past continues to trail her and colour her world, relationships and perceptions of self. At once razor-sharp, profoundly brave and often very, very funny, the essays in Leaving Isn't the Hardest Thing interrogate our notions of ecstasy, queerness and what it means to live freely. Each piece is a reckoning: of survival, identity and how to reclaim one's past when carving out a future.

Last week, the literary world was shook by an author's craptastic idea to publicly insult people who left 4-star reviews on her GoodReads book page. She was so horrible about it that BookTwitter unleashed the type of vengeance only avid book lovers could devise…they attacked this author's GoodReads book page with 1-star reviews. That's right. Before the book was even a few days old, Lauren Hough's (let's just say her name, we all know who we're talking about, right?) book, which was a widely anticipated collection of personal essays, had over 1,500 1-star reviews, which means that her book rating is now essentially meaningless.Wow, there is so much to learn from this. In today's episode, Katrina and Genny explain why any writer, even a famous one, should never ever talk to reviewers like that (as if we really need to explain this one). We also talk about why giving a book a 1-star review simply because the author is an asshole misses the whole point and importance of these review sites. By the way, did we mention that getting a 4-star review on Goodreads is actually amazing? Many writers would swoon over a review that good, but we'd settle for any, ANY review at all. This is where Katrina's personal experience with launching her YA novel, The Wise One, comes in handy. She tells us how to get reviews in really effective ways but warns that some of these methods are a lot of work (but totally worth it!).Last week, we polled a few of our Facebook followers to get their advice on how to handle bad reviews, and their answers will definitely inspire you! Meanwhile, Genny's hair gets caught a bunch of times in her headphones, and we manage to throw shade on a whole cast of Hollywood actors. All in a day's work!★  ★  ★Let us know what you thought of our episode! You can reach us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or email writingthebroomstick@gmail.com.Hey! Do you like Celtic folklore, YA urban fantasy, AND free stuff? Read the first three chapters of Katrina's debut novel, “The Wise One”.And, if you want to see what Genny's reading lately, check out her Goodreads review page.

Hough was 15 when her family left the Children of God cult. Afterward, she struggled to face the trauma of her past. At 18 she joined the Air Force during "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and was discharged for being gay. "I spent a long time lying to myself more than, I think, anyone else. Telling myself that my childhood didn't affect me, telling myself that the military didn't affect me," she says. "I think writing, more than anything, brought that out. ... You kind of have to tell the truth or it's crap and you know it." Her new collection of personal essays is 'Leaving Isn't the Hardest Thing.' Podcast critic Nick Quah reviews 'Renegades,' Spotify's podcast of President Obama and Bruce Springsteen in conversation. And jazz critic Kevin Whitehead reviews a tribute album to Ornette Coleman by Miguel Zenón.
