1972 single by Manu Dibango

Cameroonian musician and composer Manu Dibango passed away on March 24, 2020 at his home in France, an early victim of Covid 19. This episode is a tribute to the exceptional man who, by chance, as he says, gave us the famous Soul Makossa, a tune that opened the Disco era. In this episode of Afropop Worldwide, Georges Collinet goes back in time to recollect his friendship with his fellow Cameroonian. He explores the many ways their lives paralleled and intersected after they were sent to France by their parents for an education. This musical journey is enhanced by the wisdom and sonorous laughter of Manu Dibango and by the mesmerizing music culled from over 200 records that Manu produced over a 60 year career. We'll sample some Maxi Voom Voom - as Georges Collinet on the Voice Of America was known - and have a taste of Andouillette and Suya in Yaoundé, Cameroon. And we'll finally know how to correctly say "Ma Ma Ko, Ma Massa, Ma Ma Makossa." This episode is definitely a multi-sensory delight! APWW #814
New episode of the Queen Venerator podcast out now. On this episode, we discuss the album “Soul Makossa” by the Lafayette Afro Rock Band, the history of the band, Manu Dibango, breakbeat sampling, and N'Sync… somehow.
Andy Williams - Theme From "Love Story" (12" Version) (1979) Normally, I have a deep disdain for old show business icons trying to ride the ol' disco train, but Andy Williams gives it all in this updated version of his big hit from 1972. Jeesh, say what you want about the guy, but on this, he BRINGS it. I believe this is the "short" version. The long version is 10 minutes. After doing this show for almost 6 years, Andy Williams has become one of my favorite vocalists. Ann Peebles - Come to Mama (1975) Bob Seger covered this on his break-thru album Night Moves. I like this version much more. Al Green's producer produced this as well. Discerning ears will hear it right away. Freddie Garrity and the New Dreamers - I'm Telling You Now (1976) Freddie and the Dreamers were an English beat band that had some hits between May 1963 and November 1965. The band's stage act was enlivened by the comic antics of the 5-foot-3-inch-tall Freddie Garrity, who would bounce around the stage with arms and legs flying. This album was about 10 years after their heyday. I can only imagine in 1976, arms and legs flying to keep the blunt from burning the studio rug. IYKWIM. Freddie and the Dreamers - Tin Pan Alley (1978) Charlie Dore - Fear Of Flying (1979) Charlie Dore had a fair-to-middling hit with "Pilot of the Airwaves" in 1979. I think they were grooming her to be a sort of Ricki Lee Jones. Hey, George Harrison sang one of her songs!! Chicago - Street Player (12" Version) (1978) Look at that Donnie Dacus laughing in the middle of the shot. He seems so happy. They were already planning on kicking him to the curb. Of course, it made not one fricking bit of difference in the end. Wikipedia: His work in the starring role of Woof in Hair, with Annie Golden, Treat Williams, Beverly D'Angelo, John Savage was directed by Academy Award winner Miloš Forman. Hair was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. The movie opened the Cannes Film Festival in 1979. Dacus' debut with Chicago followed the death of founding member Terry Kath. The first album Dacus appeared on (Hot Streets) went to No. 12 and platinum. Dacus also was in the lineup for Chicago 13. After the 1979 tour in support of Chicago 13, Dacus was released from the band without an announcement. Someone didn't put into the cocaine kitty. In 1982, Dacus joined Badfinger. Danny Livingstone - Rudy, A Message To You (1967) Dion - Daddy Rollin' (1968) B-side of "Abraham, Martin, and John". Trailer for the film Dr. Frankenstein on Campus (1970) Eli Culbertson - I Need Your Love Tonight (1974) I thought this was a good example of an Elvis impersonation before Elvis died. But at the time, the artist insisted it was not an impersonation. Eli Culbertson - Boogie Queen (1974) George Harrison - Fear Of Flying (1979) George Harrison - Lay His Head (1987) The Beach Boys - Here Comes The Night (12" Version) (1978) Jack Lee - Come Back And Stay (1976) Jack Lee also wrote "Hangin' on the Telephone". Little Richard Hurry Sundown (1967) Mars Bonfire - Born To Be Wild (1968) Moby Grape - Never (1968) Niela Miller - Baby, Please Don't Go to Town (1961) John Lee Hooker - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (1966) Polaroid Swinger Commercial (1965) Barry Manilow on vocals. Renaldo & The Loaf - Ow! Stew The Red Shoe (1981) Terri Gibbs - Same Old Mop (1975) Terri Gibbs had a big hit with "Somebody's Knocking". This single predated that one by 6 years. Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa (1971) Wikipedia: "Soul Makossa" is a song released as a single in 1972 by Cameroon saxophonist and songwriter Manu Dibango. It was originally recorded as the B-side for "Hymne de la 8e Coupe d'Afrique des Nations", a song celebrating the Cameroon national football team's accession to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament, as well as Cameroon's hosting the games for the first time; the lyrics were written by Cameroonian poet and musicologist S.M. Eno Belinga. Except for some words in English, it was written in Duala, a native dialect continuum from Cameroon. In 1972, David Mancuso found a copy in a Brooklyn West Indian record store and often played it at his parties at The Loft. The response was so positive that the few copies of "Soul Makossa" in New York City were quickly purchased. The song was subsequently played heavily by Frankie Crocker, who deejayed at WBLS, then New York's most popular black radio station. Since the original release was so obscure, at least 23 groups quickly released cover versions to capitalize on the demand for the record. Later in 1972, American-based Atlantic Records licensed the original Manu Dibango version from French record label Fiesta, and released it as a single. The single peaked at number 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1973; Dibango's original version of the song and a cover by Afrique was on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at the same time. The song also became an international hit leading to even more cover versions by various groups around the world. The song is probably best known for the chanted vocal refrain "ma-ma-ko, ma-ma-sa, ma-ko ma-ko-sa", which was adapted and used in songs by many prominent artists such as Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" from his album Thriller (1982). The refrain is a play on the word makossa, Dibango's main music genre. Roy Hawkins - The Thrill Is Gone (1951) No, B.B. King did not write this tune, but he certainly made it famous. I thought you might like to hear the original. Tony Orlando & Dawn - Happy Man (1976)

Hey Beautiful people. So if you locked in live and joined me on this transition thankyou. Don't worry if you missed it as here it is for your aural pleasure. Pleas note the words used in this Musical Documentary are taken from From the article written by Aaron Gonsher NYC Times. My tribute was turning this into a podcast. No credit needed for me here just pulled it together as a tribute show and a few tracks across the Loft Timeline . On Valentine's Day in 1970, David Mancuso hosted a private party called Love Saves the Day in his loft at 647 Broadway in New York, a few blocks north of Houston Street. He was an audio obsessive with a voracious appetite for spiritual sounds and a profound sense of community, and the event was an opportunity to bring together friends in a setting unfettered by commercial demands, or the restrictions of their outside lives. Episode 012: Hour Hands at Twelve O'Clock01 Stevie Wonder - Look Around (US 1971) Covered in what sounds like an electric harpsichord, this beautiful and contemplative tune by Stevie from his often overlooked 1971 album Where I'm From simultaneously addresses the ills of the world while reminding us that the world itself is an illusion. Wonder would continued to pepper his 70's classic albums with psychedelic touches here and there, but one may argue that he came the closest to a true psych-out with this one.02 Allen Touissant - Southern Nights (US 1975) Ultra-classic tune from a New Orleans legend that would eventually be covered by Glen Campbell into a massive chart topper. Touissant's original features the infamous Leslie cabinet speaker effect on this voice, at once giving it a psychedelic edge not too often heard on soul songs from the era. This combined with the languid nature of the track and lyrics filled with vivid southern imagery make it a bonafide psych-soul staple.03 Cymande - Changes (UK 1974) This UK band created some of the most unique and celebrated funk music of the time. Combining elements from their rastafarian faith along with a distinct socially conscious soul sound, they would go on to release three albums during their prime, all of which are stellar. This gorgeous mellow number is a bit somber, but nonetheless shows their power at creating a deep and contemplative ballad that grooves.04 Manu Dibango - Hibiscus (Camaroon 1972) Taken from his breakthrough album Soul Makossa that features many a dancefloor scorcher, saxophonist Manu Dibango also shows a deeper side to his sound filled with wah-wah guitars and a bass propelled groove. Something in Manu's playing and the overall syrupy vibe of the track makes me wonder if they were drinking from the same THC filled stew Fela concocted. Nonetheless, Manu and co are able to communicate a heady space without a single word. 05 William S. Fischer - Patience is a Virtue (US 1970) Fischer wastes no time getting this one going with a list of women whom he'd like to communicate his simple yet effective chorus to. This wonderful riff based groover is taken from his 1970 debut Circles which is filled with electronic and psychedelic soul experiments. Fischer went on to release three obscure albums in 1972 that are all worth seeking out.06 Ike White - I Remember George (US 1976) We end this episode with a true journey. Singer Ike White released his sole album in 1976 while in the midst of serving a murder sentence at San Quentin. The album is a stunning long lost classic - and while that is an accolade often thrown around, it is never more fitting that in the case of this LP. This track goes through multiple movements - beginning with the sounds of inner space before launching into a mellow introduction that culminates with an uplifting middle section that nods to Stevie Wonder. Wonder would also provide the liner notes to the album, lending even more folklore of the origins of the album. After a campaign to overturn his case, White was eventually was released from prison in 1979.

Episode Description: Join us as we travel the coasts of Cameroon and pay a visit to Manu Dibango and “Soul Makossa”. Michael Jackson would later steal the famous hook, “ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-ko-sa” for his hit Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, and even go on to give permission he that wasn’t his to give for Rihanna’s hit “Don’t Stop the Music”. We’ll discuss all that and along the way connect the dots to The Fugees, The Outsidaz, Eminem, D12, Quincy Jones and his daughters. What we geek out over in this episode: Manu Dibango, Coming to America, Makossa, crate digging, Ms. Fat Booty, Sing alongs with Mitch, David Mancuso and The Loft, The Fugees, Cowboyts, Pace Won, Rah Digga, The Outsidaz, offending Tupac, Famous Irish bands, Enya, Latoya Jackson, Rebbie Jackson, Eminem and D12, story time with Boo Kapone. In this episode Lyd the SBW listens to Soul Makossa. Soul Makossa and its musical children exemplify the call-and-response nature of music. Black American music has its roots in west Africa. Enslaved Africans brought their musical traditions with them as they were sold across the Americas creating rhythms and music that would give birth to gospel, blues jazz, samba, rhumba, soul, funk, rock, r&b, pop, reggae, soca, bachata, merengue, house, hip-hop and innumerable sub-genres, including, makossa, a style of funk-dance music from Cameroon. Little tidbit, kossa means "I dance" in Duala. Cameroonian musician and composer Manu Dibango passed away on March 24 at his home in France, an early victim of Covid 19. “My Friend Manu” is a tribute to the exceptional man who, by chance, as he says, gave us the famous Soul Makossa, a tune that opened the Disco era. In “My Friend Manu” you will not only sample some Maxi Voom Voom, as Georges Collinet’s show on the Voice Of America was called, but also have a taste of Andouillette and Suya in Yaoundé, Cameroon. And you will finally know how to correctly say Ma Ma Ko, Ma Massa, Ma Ma Makossa. “My Friend Manu” is definitely a multi-sensory delight! Photos by Pierre René-Worms, used with permission.

Wallace Roney - In her family 2. Wallace Roney – I Will Always Love You 3. Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa 4. Michael Longo - The Last Tango in Paris 5. Marcelo Peralta – All of me 6. Ellis marsalis - Never let me go 7. Ellis y Bradford Marsalis – Stela by Starling 8. Bucky Pizzarrelli – The way you look tonight 9. Bucky Pizzarelli y Stephane Grappelli – Blues 10. Bucky pizzarelli - Breakfast at Tiffany's / Dreamsville

In another dispatch from the Fortress of Proopitude, Greg and Jennifer speak about Soul Makossa, Sandra Bernhard and Stephen Sondheim.

Disco is a genre of music that was popular in the 1970s, though it has since enjoyed brief resurgences including the present day.[10] The term is derived from discothèque (French for "library of phonograph records", but subsequently used as proper name for nightclubs in Paris[11]). Its initial audiences were club-goers from the African American, GLBTQ,[nb 1] Italian American, Latino, and psychedelic communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco also was a reaction against both the domination of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music by the counterculture during this period. Women embraced disco as well, and the music eventually expanded to several other popular groups of the time.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] In what is considered a forerunner to disco-style clubs, New York City DJ David Mancuso opened The Loft, a members-only private dance club set in his own home, in February 1970.[20][21] AllMusic claims some have argued that Isaac Hayes and Barry White were playing what would be called disco music as early as 1971. According to the music guide, there is disagreement as to what the first disco song was. Claims have been made for Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (1972), Jerry Butler's "One Night Affair" (1972), the O'Jays' "Love Train" (1972, #1 hit), the Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat" (1973), and George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby" (1974).[6][22] The first article about disco was written in September 1973 by Vince Aletti for Rolling Stone magazine.[23] In 1974 New York City's WPIX-FM premiered the first disco radio show.[21] Musical influences include funk, Latin, psychedelic and soul music. The disco sound has soaring, often reverberated vocals over a steady "four-on-the-floor" beat, an eighth note (quaver) or 16th note (semi-quaver) hi-hat pattern with an open hi-hat on the off-beat, and a prominent, syncopated electric bass line sometimes consisting of octaves. The Fender Jazz Bass is often associated with disco bass lines, because the instrument itself has a very prominent "voice" in the musical mix. In most disco tracks, strings, horns, electric pianos, and electric guitars create a lush background sound. Orchestral instruments such as the flute are often used for solo melodies, and lead guitar is less frequently used in disco than in rock. Many disco songs employ the use of electronic instruments such as synthesizers. Well-known late 1970s disco performers included ABBA, Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Trammps, Van McCoy, Gloria Gaynor, The Village People, Chic, and The Jacksons—the latter of whom first dipped their toes into disco as The Jackson 5. Summer would become the first well-known and most popular disco artist—eventually having the title "The Queen of Disco" bestowed upon her by various critics—and would also play a part in pioneering the electronic sound that later became a prominent element of disco. While performers and singers garnered the lion's share of public attention, producers working behind the scenes played an equal, if not more important role in disco, since they often wrote the songs and created the innovative sounds and production techniques that were part of the "disco sound."[24] Many non-disco artists recorded disco songs at the height of disco's popularity, and films such as Saturday Night Fever and Thank God It's Friday contributed to disco's rise in mainstream popularity. Disco was the last mass popular music movement that was driven by the baby boom generation.[25] Disco music was a worldwide phenomenon, but its popularity declined in the United States in the late 1970s. On July 12, 1979, an anti-disco protest in Chicago called "Disco Demolition Night" had shown that an angry backlash against disco and its culture had emerged in the United States. In the subsequent months and years, many musical acts associated with disco struggled to get airplay on the radio. A few artists still managed to score disco hits in the early 1980s, but the term "disco" became unfashionable in the new decade and was eventually replaced by "dance music", "dance pop", and other identifiers. Although the production techniques have changed, many successful acts since the 1970s have retained the basic disco beat and mentality, and dance clubs have remained popular.[22] A disco revival was seen in 2013, as disco-styled songs by artists like Daft Punk (with Nile Rodgers), Justin Timberlake, Breakbot, Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke filled the pop charts in the UK and the US.[10][26] FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM & TWITTER @DJTOUCHTONE LIKE MY PAGE ON FACEBOOK: DJ TOUCH TONE GOOGLE+ ME: TOUCH TONE MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL: TOUCHTONEREMIXES EMAIL ME FOR GIGS: INFO@DJTOUCHTONE.ORG CALL FOR BOOKINGS: (516) 855-7349
