The menopause years, where we become experts in the fine art of standing up for ourselves. It's like getting a Ph.D. in being an unstoppable force. When you reach a certain age, it seems like we're surrounded by people who think they can dismiss our opinions because we don't know what we're talking about. Unfortunately for them, they quickly find out that we've got the ultimate weapons in our arsenal: a lifetime of experience, a low tolerance of bull**** and a sharp tongue.   Whether it's politely reminding someone that we have an opinion and we're not afraid to share it when required or whether someone thinks they can steamroller us into doing something that isn't quite what we wanted to do, we menopausal women know how to make our presence known.  The problem is we can often feel like we're doing that alone when that need not be the case. It's time to build the village around ourselves. Join me and Liza Baker in conversation about the benefits of growing older and how we can connect and support each other.          Find out more here: https://www.mmmpodcast.me/ep187

Liza Baker is a full-time health coach and nonprofit consultant, self-published author, blogger, podcaster, and woefully underpaid COO of a busy family of four spread across the globe. She knows what it's like to be under-appreciated and overworked, and it's her mission to help mission-driven women regain control of their lives and feel good! In this week's episode, Liza shares how to break your bad food habits, start to love your kitchen again, and what to do when you're having insane food cravings that just won't quit!   Key takeaways: Liza has had a diverse background throughout her life. She started her career teaching Chinese! Cooking at home is such a lost art! People feel like it takes so much time. It really comes down to the relationship you have with food, not the food itself. Women often fall into chronic caregiving. People need stuff done at work, and then when we come home, our little humans need help too. There is no break! Women love support roles. More so than men. Out of the 300 people Kathy has trained, she has trained five men. There's nothing wrong with being in a support role unless you're getting taken advantage of. And more often than not, women are getting taken advantage of! Kathy and her husband have switched roles in the household. It's great! It really works well in their relationship. Kathy felt like she woke up one day and was like, why am I trying to kill myself with food? Some of Liza's favorite cooking tips are “plan overs.” Don't know how to cook? Start small. Learn the basics first. Why is it we want the best stuff, but refuse to pay for good quality food? What should you do with cravings or when you really want a treat? The emotions this year have been off the charts. It makes sense why we're so stressed out and need comfort food. Are you waiting to “go back to normal”? Why? Normal didn't work for a lot of people. A good and strong habit starts in layers. What's the difference between self-care vs. soul care? It's so important to shift your energy to a more positive and optimistic one. It will completely change the way you manage stress, how you show up at work or life, and your relationship with food. How would things look if this was EASY?   Resources: Simply-healthcoaching.com Liza on LinkedIn Jamesclear.com/habits The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg   Quotes:   “Let's talk about the food you're putting in your mouth, but let's talk about why you're putting it in there, too. It's very often your relationship with food that's the issue rather than the food itself.”   “We're very used to thinking about food is food is food and somehow we've fallen into this idea; we want the best car, the best insurance policy, the best house, but our food should cost 99 cents.”   “Normal didn't work for a lot of people. Normal has not worked for women, people of color. It has not worked. Let's not go back to that.”

Women are believed to have been carrying a higher mental load than men which is why the energy that we put to into things matters, even the small ones.  Being in the business industry or being an entrepreneur demands energy and it is important for us to know what energy we are putting into it.How do you thrive while giving the best energy that you can to those that surround you? As a follow up to my 2-part interview on food and our kitchen energy with Liza Baker of Simply: Health Coaching, it’s time to talk more about Purifying in the kitchen! To be effective, enjoyable spaces for food preparation – and eating – it is vital for our kitchens’ energy to be clear and fresh. One of the best ways to accomplish this is through Purifying. In this episode, I briefly cover Purifying these categories of kitchen belongings: Pots and pans Cooking and serving utensils Eating utensils Dishes and glassware Food storage containers Wraps, foil, and bags Small appliances Gadgets Cookbooks There is a benefit to Purifying a room that has so many different categories. It allows you to easily take it one step at a time as you sort through each one. Here are a few steps to follow as you Purify in the kitchen: Breathe: Receive a few deep, centering breaths to ground and center yourself. Get clear about what your intentions are. Talk with Each Other: If you share your kitchen with another, be sure to communicate. Share your ideas about Purifying and ask for their input. If more than one person cooks in the kitchen, consider collaborating on your kitchen Purification. Identify Your Categories: Your categories may differ from my list above. Take a tour of your kitchen to identify your unique categories. Be sure to consider if there are kitchen belongings that are stored in another area of the home. Write your categories down. This will serve as a basis for your Purification plan. Choose Your Starting Point: Select a category to begin with. Choosing a smaller category or one with less volume of belongings may help! Clear Your Space: Create a clear, open space for Purifying. This may be the kitchen table, island, or even a clean space on the kitchen or living room floor. Give yourself plenty of space to spread items so you can see everything clearly. Sort Your Belongings: Move through each category on your list. Create piles for keep, let go, recycle, and trash. Select a Temporary Storage Space: If you’re not able to donate or otherwise distribute your ‘let go’ belongings right away, create a temporary storage space. This is a vital step so you don’t end up stuffing these objects back into kitchen storage areas! Re-Place and Organize: Put away your ‘keep’ items in a way that makes sense to you. Organize these belongings so you can access them easily and quickly, as needed. Keep it simple. REMEMBER: There Are No Rules: You get to set up your kitchen in any way that makes the most sense to you. Links From This Episode etee: Source for plastic-free food storage. This episode is a follow up from a previous one in which ‘washing your mind' is a form of self care. What that really means is that in order for us to be in the best possible frame of mind to make good self care choices, we must clear our minds of the clutter and ‘noise' that don't serve us. In my candid conversation with Liza Baker, a certified holistic health coach based in Michigan, we discuss HOW you can practice a form of ‘mental hygeine' as self care. So much of how we view looking after us is a lesson in how we think, using different language and associating how we WANT to feel with that. Since #covid19 came to define the normal for us--many of us have found ourselves in a reality which has either challenged us to up our game, or keep us where we are, or worse.  No matter how your world has been upended over the past month, NOW Is a tremendous opportunity to look at not just WHO you are, but HOW you do you. How you live, how you look after you, how you make choices and take actions is ALL a lesson self care. "I always like to tell people that, you know, if you hate your job and your bosses always mean and you're always stressed out, you know, chances are you're the one that's going home at the end of the day and emptying a pint of Ben and Jerry's." Some topics we cover are: Relationships with food Burnout Importance of home cooked food verses fast food In this episode I have THE BEST conversation with my dear friend Liza Baker. Liza (that’s Leeza!) is a full-time Integrative Nutrition® health coach, self-published author, part-time consultant, and woefully underpaid COO of a busy family of four spread across the globe. Her coaching work is grounded in the belief that women 40+ who feel that the only way out of their overscheduled lives involves a plane ticket, a wad of cash, and a change of identity can instead live happy, healthy lives, meeting all their obligations and honoring their own wildest, sweetest dreams. She coaches them in identifying and interrupting the patterns that contribute to their overwhelm and in establishing simple, sustainable new habits that will help them not just survive but thrive in what—contrary to popular belief—can be the happiest, healthiest decades of our lives. Liza received her health coach training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition® and an AAS in Culinary Arts from the Cooking + Hospitality Institute of Chicago (later part of Le Cordon Bleu). In the years BC (before children), she was the owner and executive chef of a catering and private chef company in Chicago, and she has taught cooking and nutrition to all ages. Health Coaching is a term that’s getting a lot of attention these days, but what is it? I talk with Health Coach Liza Baker who studied at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition about her work and how it parallels my own. Though we trained in different arenas, our approaches are similar. I love Liza’s insight about putting your schedule on a diet. She gives practical tools for reflecting on what we say yes to, and understanding if our schedule reflects what authentically matters to us. This is a great show to listen to as you transition into the New Year, as it’s a perfect time for reflection and preparing yourself to, as Liza would say, “live in alignment with what you want and what you need,” in 2018. We have to eat to live.” --Liza Baker “It takes longer to watch an episode of Iron Chef than it does to cook dinner.” -- Liza Baker “We’re so used to looking outside ourselves for validation and for answers….’Should I be vegetarian?’ I can’t answer that for you. The only person who can answer that is you.” --Liza Baker “You’re not a failure. You’re just not living in alignment with what you want and what you need.” --Liza Baker “The habits that I encourage people to do are not the be all end all, they’re great.
