Erin Brockovich (2000) (directed by Steven Soderbergh) is based on the true story of Erin Brockovich, a legal assistant without formal training, who uncovers one of the most significant environmental lawsuits in U.S. history: the case against Pacific Gas and Electric for contaminating groundwater in Hinkley, California. The film, which features an Oscar-winning performance by Julia Roberts in the title role, explores the role of lawsuits in exposing truth and gaining compensation for victims, the gendered dynamics of legal advocacy, and the challenges of taking on entrenched power structures in society.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction1:59 Who is Erin Brockovich?3:11 Obstacles to holding corporations accountable5:49 How Erin Brockovich overcomes those obstacles8:10 Imbalance of power and resources14:40 Hinkley, California18:00 Accessing records21:16 Tort reform, punitive damages, and proportionality27:10 States and environmental regulation32:22 Causation and attribution science37:30 Whistleblowers 41:17 Finding the “smoking gun”42:53 The practice of law and parentingFurther reading:Banks, Sedina “The ‘Erin Brockovich Effect': How Media Shapes Toxics Policy,” 26 Environs Env't L. What would it look like to tour a concert by bicycle? In this episode, I'm joined by musician Sarah Small, a viola da gamba player who chose to cycle between performances rather than travel by train or plane.Between May and July, Sarah rode across the UK with her instrument on the bike, playing concerts in village halls, churches, community spaces, and remote locations. Her route took her along coastlines, across islands, and as far north as the Hebridean Way and the Shetland Islands, bringing live music to places that rarely host performances. We talk about the realities of cycle touring a concert, the challenges of carrying a fragile instrument by bike, and the generosity Sarah experienced when she arrived under her own steam. We also explore topics such sustainable travel, taking music to people rather than the other way around, and how taking a bike adventure can give you that hit of self confidence you didn't realise you needed.Sarah also shares her experience using low-impact transport options, including the SailLink ferry between the UK and France. You can follow Sarah's future adventures via her instagram - @SmallSarah Support the showBuy me a coffee! Join the Leaving Egypt community on Substack: leavingegyptpodcast.substack.comIn this episode, Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Sarah Small about living incarnationally in some of the UK's most forgotten communities. It can take a church leader many years to discover what it means to “be with”, to love the other as a person, just for who they are, rather than as a “project” or as an object of training. “Incarnational ministry” can sound clinical and strategic, yet reflects a deep truth. Sarah, who is not ordained, has a naturally internalized desire to give her life to the people of her community. Sarah's wisdom is beautiful in its humility; she and her family have been living it out for real in South Manchester. Bringing honesty with little romanticism, she acknowledges the hard edges of this calling, but also the deep joy in the ways God is present. Sarah's community, like others in the Eden Network, are confronting the economic realities of their neighbours, and in the midst of poverty are discovering how to be the healers of walls and lovers of the broken. In this conversation, we begin to appreciate how Christ is working through the prayers and presence of ordinary Christian families seeking the shalom of the places to which God has sent them.Sarah Small co-leads the Eden Network with her husband Steve. Eden is a movement of urban missionaries who live in some of the UK's most deprived communities. She and Steve live with their three boys on a council estate (housing project) in South Manchester which has been home for 13 years. Eden is one part of the wider mission activity of The Message Trust, a global Christian charity sharing the good news of Jesus with the hardest-to-reach people and communities. This Valentine's day as we focus on love, Sarah Small, Head of the Eden Network, encourages us to embrace the fullness of Jesus' command to love God, and to love our neighbour. Being neighbourly isn't an optional extra, and sometimes our neighbours are not those that we would naturally feel drawn to, but God's Kingdom is about crossing over the lines that divide and demonstrating his radical mercy to all.
Sarah Small, otherwise known as The Uncensored Empath, was a self-described “sponge to the universe's problems”. Her highly empathetic nature caused her to take on the emotions of everyone around her. She believes there is a strong connection between emotion and chronic illness and like so many others, all of her deeply felt emotions manifested into physical illness. Diagnosed with stomach migraines at the age of seven and then anxiety, fibromialgia, celiac disease and other autoimmune conditions later in life, she learned and applied a multitude of healing modalities to herself. Today, Sarah is a thriving life and success coach for other empaths. She teaches healing modalities such as emotional freedom technique, nervous system retraining, breathwork, and more. Sarah is a wealth of knowledge, as you'll hear in this conversation. Enjoy!
