"Kelly, you got that one, too, the A-OK one Gene. Lactose intolerance, too, as well. You don't make this enzyme very well called lactase. Remember, it's an enzyme ends in a chop, chop chop that breaks down the big giant molecule of dairy, cow's milk. The problem with cow's milk is the molecule is huge. And you're trying to put it's like trying to push your elephant through your bedroom door for folks that have these issues. They drink milk or have ice cream, which I love, unfortunately. And the problem is the molecule is too big to fit through the cells to get into your bloodstream, and it causes digestive disruption. Kelly would benefit from taking lactase digestive enzymes if she does want to have dairy." "I used to like make up all these lies in my head and excuses. I was so skinny in high school, I was the cheerleader on the top of the mound and, you know, high school. I'm 53, by the way. High school started getting further and further away. Right. Sports stopped. I was a soccer player, played tennis, and was a cheerleader. I tried every sport. I was active! And then comes the full-time job. So for all the years, I blamed my industry, the food and event planning industry. But, you know, at that time, I also had a lot of death. So I lost a best friend. "I hear the statement often and I want to help to give you some grace. So one of the things as a coach that I really help my clients with is a couple of things is always recalibrating their state of mind, always making sure that they are keeping their language in a place of desire and where they want to go, because the words that we say are very powerful. And one of the statements that I will hear is I am lazy and that shit just makes me cringe. Ok, here's the thing. You're not lazy and no one you really shouldn't say that. Like, it just doesn't sound very good coming out of people's mouths. First of all, but second, it's just recognizing that overwhelm is pretty much the root problem, which creates procrastination. Which then equals feeling lazy to you. Ok, so let me repeat that overwhelm is the true problem. And when you feel overwhelmed, what do you want to do? Oh, oh, forget, I'm just, yeah, I just can't right now. Yeah, I just can't. So then that creates a lack of wanting to do it. So you what? You procrastinate in doing it? But then in your mind, you feel like I am being lazy. So you're not lazy, so honestly, I would truthfully work really hard to divorce that statement from your language." "So they go from one job to another thinking that it's going to be different this time when in fact, it's the same outcome because their behaviors haven't changed because they haven't recognized that there is an issue within themselves that they need to change. So if you find that you are in this vicious cycle and it's exhausting. Trust me, it is absolutely exhausting to be in this continuous cycle. Then nothing is nothing changes unless something changes. "What I say, one brain, two minds. There's actually I want to talk about three brains, because when I say one brain two minds, I'm talking about this conscious mind and the subconscious mind. I do a lot of subconscious work with my clients. For example, I'm working with somebody to stop smoking. We did some subconscious work there. I'm helping somebody with get off pop, which is another addiction. And that's been tremendous. You know, we just figured out today that she's been drinking for 43 years. And with some subconscious work, we've been able to really, really make significant changes and really do some cool things. So you've got the conscious mind, which is your goal setter, but your subconscious mind is really your goal getter. And the subconscious mind is really where a lot of what you do comes from. And just a fun fact for you. The subconscious mind is only seven years old. So a lot of the beliefs and decisions and things that you that you make were decided as a child, you know, around these impressionable adults and female or female family members and such as you've been around." "Most people think that when they decide to lose weight that it's just all about calories in, calories out.....And and a lot of times they get defeated or feel like there's something wrong with them when it isn't working. "I think we can never, always prepare, but we can have a playbook for ourselves. And if we can stay pretty close to that playbook, we're going to get to those results. We're going to lose weight. We're going to hold on to that. And I think your life, what you did in the past, you know, not eating or doing the twelve hundred calorie approach, you're doing this like shape thing like what's your relationship with food look like? Right.If you came from a background of dance gymnastics or like, man, you're so fixated on that. OK, I wave my one today and you're a size zero that you wanted to be or you weigh the one twenty. What in your life changes to day? Once we do that, nothing, nothing changes. You fit in those jeans. But guess what? You still got to go to work. You still might have a boss you don't like. You don't say so. So I really think a lot of those things, you know, we have to shift it. It's not if I lose weight, I'll be happy. It's if I'm happy, I'll lose weight. Right, right. Right. Well, I think it's it it is it's that like it's all encompassing. I think health goes into so many different wheels of life, like, are you in a financially good spot? I mean, you've had like some in-depth conversations together on it. And that's such something that we don't we don't work on where we're at. We've lost sight line to it. Right. The emotional health that like, are we fulfilled? Yes. And and I think coaches like what fills our bucket is filling others. But we have to make sure we set those bounds, too, because we'll run ourselves to the ground." "If you are someone who always feels like you “fail” at the things you set out to do, you must read on because …you are not a failure..here’s why. There is something in our brain that is called the RAS. The Reticular Activating System. The RAS is a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that filters out unnecessary information so the important stuff gets through. For example, the RAS is the reason you learn a new word and then start hearing it everywhere.... In the same way, the RAS seeks information that “validates” your beliefs even those that aren’t serving us and we want to rid of. Your brain always wants to be “right” which is why you will always have this internal struggle. You know when you hear your inner voice say “well maybe it’s not that bad after all”... your brain is trying to convince you to “just stay where you are..it’s easier” ... In addition to that we could also go down the ego rabbit hole as well. The ego is very “fear based” - doesn’t like “change” so therefore taking the leap of faith to change often never happens because your beliefs are also being validated by your RAS." "This is where it hits our behavior patterns, how we respond to our triggers, this is everything. So the word neurotransmitters, neuro means nerves. Transmitters means how they transmit information. They're just wires with connections, so all the messages start in your brain or they start in your gut and then they zap across the wire and they go through your body and they tell your body what to do, what they tell it to go down, that they they turn and exciting things. They turn them on or they inhibit things and they turn them off. That's what your whole body basically is. You're a walking electrical chemical reaction. What makes it possible is things called neurotransmitters in some common ones would be like dopamine. A lot of people have heard of dopamine, people they call illicit drugs dope because it stimulates dopamine receptors. People who use crystal meth, heroin, cocaine, they're artificially stimulating dopamine receptors and they feel OK, feel great. I'm first for short periods of time, but then there's a heavy price to pay. So again, what you're seeing is those are some type of neurotransmitters that turn things down, that mellow you out, make you not feel anxious or depressed or anxiety or OCD or ATP or anything. Make you feel groovy. Right. Dopamine serotonin makes you go to sleep and stay asleep. And big surprise, digest your food properly. There's other stuff called GABA, too, as well. We've heard about other neurotransmitters, too, like adrenaline, also known as epinephrine. That cranks things up. It helps us deal with things. It helps the mother with the child pinned under the car, flip the car over and save the child. And that stuff really does happen. The internal workings of the metabolism can also be damaged over time. And when I say damaged, it's it's a word that gets thrown around a lot. I don't mean damaged, like broken. I just mean, worn down. In this episode of Master Your Mindset and Metabolism, I want to share one of my favorite friends and mentor, Dr. Jade Teta. In this episode we talk all things metabolism, what works and what doesn't, the Hypothalamus, Pituitary, and Adrenal Glands and why what you THINK is the answer to a healthy metabolism is actually hindering your results. Some tips from the episode: If you have fragmented, disrupted sleep, and you're not able to sleep. That is a key sort of insight that you are having too much stress on the system. Hunger, excess hunger and excess cravings. This is another indication that the system is stressed out. Isn't it interesting that the overnighter and the couch potato both have hunger and cravings constantly? They tend to suffer from those two things energy levels, obviously, right, as the metabolism is all about keeping energy levels stable. So when your energy is unpredictable and volatile, that's a good indication. Also, things like exercise performance and exercise recovery. If you do a workout, you're completely wiped out where you can't get through a workout. This is an example of a stress parameter that is overwhelmed. And then one of the things that's most important for women particularly has to do with libido and menstrual cycle. "The problem usually comes down to feeling a panic because you feel disgusted or you don't like where you are or you feel like, I just I can't stand it anymore so everything has to change. And so therefore, you feel like you have to make 10,000 changes all at once. That is one of the issues. The other issue is, organization. People think, OK, I got to have this in place and place first, and that in place, etc etc. And so therefore, your action steps get prolonged." "I think it's important and I'll share this with you, too. This was also one of a very painful moment. My husband told me that my son Colin had said the drunk mom is the worst mom. And I heard that. And that just broke my heart. And I just thought, you know, I don't I don't see you getting choked up, but I thought, I don't want him to view me like that. I don't want to be known as that. I don't want him to talk about me in a way when he's older. And just remember that. And I thought, well, I have the opportunity to turn this around. And so that was one of the biggest things for me was my kids. And, you know, when it comes to making change with anything in your life, it really your desire has to be for yourself first. You have to do it for yourself. You can't change for other people, but it certainly can be a catalyst. It certainly can be a motivator. So just remember that." "I influence & take responsibility for everything that happens in my life." (Example of living in "Cause") Or "If only my spouse, my boss, my coworkers, my parents, my children, ... understood me and helped me achieve my dreams or did what I wanted or what is best for me, then life would be great." (Example of living in "Effect") In this episode I teach you the difference between the two...and I hope you find yourself living more in "cause" then in "effect." Being at cause means that you are decisive in creating what you want in life and take responsibility for what you have achieved or will achieve. You see the world as a place of opportunity and you move toward achieving what you desire. If things are not unfolding as you would like, you take action and explore other possibilities. Above all, you know you have choice in what you do and how you react to people and events. If you are living in "effect" you may blame others or circumstances for your bad moods or for what you have not achieved or for your life in general. You may feel powerless or depend on others in order for you to feel good about yourself or about life - If only my spouse, my boss, my coworkers, my parents, my children, ... understood me and helped me achieve my dreams or did what I wanted or what is best for me, then life would be great. If you wait and hope for things to be different or for others to provide, then you are at effect or a victim of circumstances. And really, how much fun is that? And how much fun do you think it is for others to be around you? Believing that someone else is responsible or making them responsible for your happiness or your different moods is very limiting and gives this person some mystical power over you, which can cause you a great deal of anguish. This week on Master Your Mindset and Metabolism I discuss how paying attention to your protein intake can be a big game changer! "Protein is going to curb your cravings. It's also going to keep you more full. It's going to keep you more satisfied. So if I were to place in front of you five doughnuts and five chicken breasts, you would easily be able to eat those five doughnuts. But you would not be able to easily eat those five chicken breasts. They're very filling. They're very, very satiating. However, protein is something that is also a thermogenic. And a thermogenic just means that it takes your body more to process it and digest it. So it takes more energy. OK. So if you were to make one change in your nutrition today, I would recommend to add a little bit more protein." Topics covered: Why protein is the king in macros. Different sources of lean protein. "This is such a great time to see who you truly are. How are you responding to this whole thing. What are you doing with your time? I'll tell you, this is such a fucking gift when it comes to time, because I don't know about you, but how many times have you heard people say, "I don't have time. I don't have time. I just can't. I can't do that now. I really want to do that for myself." OK, so now that is just an excuse in a lie, you know? So if you're not taking advantage of all of this time that we now have. Then you got to dig deeper and ask yourself, "Why do I not want to do this?" or "Why am I not changing?" or "Why am I resisting?" Often times it's because there's a second gain. Some people might not understand what second gain means. A second gain is when you are gaining some type of benefit from engaging in a specific behavior or not changing and staying where you are." The question was: Weights first or cardio first? Trevor replied with this... "You definitely want to prioritize weight training first. I would definitely say weights before cardio. And then in an ideal scenario, maybe you have a 30 minute break after your weight training session. You can grab a little bit of water. You can do a proper cool down. You can recover a little bit and then you could go into a cardio session... working out twice a day is NOT necessary. "It's just all about letting go of these old thoughts and thinking, these old patterns that are really truly blocking you from that desired version of yourself. That person that you can be. Most of the time you just give up because you feel like you don't know how to get there. But I'm telling you, this is how you're going to unlock it. You have to be mindful of your thoughts and thinking. You have to really catch those thoughts. Be able to really catch it. And then ask yourself that question, is this still my truth? This week on Master Your Mindset and Metabolism I talk about my experience where I recently decided to get really open and vulnerable in a Facebook group. The entire process of how it helped me heal, yet in doing so the universe threw some challenges my way. Through this process I truly learned: *Hiding isn't healing. *Not everyone is at the same level of consciousness, therefore presents some friction. *Knowing when the energy around you shifts and it's time to GO. "I was saying to myself, Oh, my God, you know what? Maybe part of the lesson is, is that maybe my journey within that group is done. Maybe the healing that I needed to do, which was be vocal, get transparent, share some of my stories and really get honest, and finally, open up inside a group where I was silent for so long that maybe that was it, that that was my time. "That indicates is that this isn't a breakthrough for you as long as it's similar to something you already have. This is not transformational space. You aren't going to actually experience something different as long as you can fit it in to that thing that you're already familiar with, then know that nothing has changed. That is why I think it's important to look at the distinction, because when people hear about this scan, they think, oh, yeah, assessment. Oh, that's like DISC. Oh, yeah. That's like Myers-Briggs. I know these things. I've taken those before. I'm this. I'm of that with the other assessments that people tend to be familiar with. Disk, Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, Strength Finders, whatever, they tend to be questionnaire based. And because their questionnaire based, your subconscious is going to work on gaming the system. There's no way out of this. That's just how the brain is wired. What ends up happening though, is that would be like you going to see the doctor and the doctor walking in to treat you while holding somebody else's test results." Yo Yo Dieting - Lose weight - Gain Weight - Lose Weight - Gain Weight.. That dysfunctional pattern you keep finding yourself repeating. "Patterns start looking for them. It's easy, it's easy to do. And here's the thing. If you find yourself saying things like this is just what I do, here I go again. That right there is a telltale sign of a pattern that needs to be. Reviewed, OK, recognized, reviewed, it needs to then be looked at as. Let's investigate this and look for the story that is attached to it. "Different calorie sources can have vastly different effects on hunger, hormones, energy expenditure and brain regions that control your food intake. So even though calories are important, counting them or being consciously aware of them is not at all necessary to lose weight. So in other words, what I am saying is, is that you can't just look at the calorie intake as a whole. You have to look at the breakdown." Calories matter, however, what those calories are made up of are more important. In this episode I talk a lot about eating with intention and purpose. How do the food your calories are made up of affect your energy levels, your thoughts and thinking, etc. For most people, weight loss is all about a "math problem" (calories in versus calories burned) , however, in my opinion, there is way more to it than that.
