The next major release in Xbox's first party family has arrived! Senua's Saga: Hellblade II has seen an increased amount of pressure placed upon it as concern for the platform holder as ramped up. Stripping ourselves from the heightened emotionality of that situation, how does over five years of development, a team size four times bigger than the original, and a big Microsoft check benefit the newest entry in the Hellblade series? The Dukes are joined by Gene Park where all three were able to play through the game a week ahead of its launch and let their thoughts marinate. Sitting at an 82 on OpenCritic, Hellblade 2 is off to a solid start, but where do the Dukes sit? Well, it's time to dig deep and find out! Baldur's Gate 3 was the top Steam game in terms of REVENUE in 2023. It surpassed both Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy. This shouldn't really surprise anybody, but I'm sure it still will upset some Starfield players... ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishGaming.net Additional Context: In 2023, the gaming world witnessed a remarkable achievement with "Baldur's Gate 3" outshining other major titles in terms of Steam revenue. This highly anticipated role-playing game (RPG), developed by Larian Studios, not only topped the Steam charts but also surpassed the earnings of other major releases like "Hogwarts Legacy" and "Starfield." In fact, "Baldur's Gate 3" grossed an astonishing $657 million on Steam, significantly more than the combined earnings of "Hogwarts Legacy" ($341 million) and "Starfield" ($235 million). "Baldur's Gate 3" is a triumph for the RPG genre, drawing on the Dungeons & Dragons framework to deliver a deep storytelling experience, intricate gameplay mechanics, and a faithful adherence to the D&D ethos. The game's success is a testament to its widespread popularity, with estimates suggesting over 7.5 million copies sold and over 1.3 million players completing the game. The game's performance is particularly noteworthy given the context of its competition. "Hogwarts Legacy," a game set in the Harry Potter universe, and "Starfield," a highly anticipated space exploration game from Bethesda, were both major releases in 2023. Despite their strong brand recognition and fan bases, "Baldur's Gate 3" managed to surpass them in revenue on Steam. This success is not just limited to revenue figures but extends to critical acclaim and player engagement. The game received overwhelmingly positive reviews on platforms like Metacritic and OpenCritic, with scores often reaching the high 90s. The community around "Baldur's Gate 3" is vibrant and active, highlighting the game's significant impact on players and critics alike. "Baldur's Gate 3" represents a significant milestone for RPGs, reinvigorating the genre and attracting a diverse audience, including both newcomers and long-time fans of the series. Its commercial and critical success has set a new benchmark for RPGs and the gaming industry as a whole, demonstrating the viability and profitability of high-quality RPGs in the current gaming market. Back in January, MobileSyrup created a 'Fantasy Football' league-like draft for 2023 video game releases. Dean Daley, Brad Shankar, Chris Brown and Steve Vegvari contributed to the list of fantasy selections. Here's how it worked: in January, we were given the chance to select three games we felt would be among the year's top-scoring on OpenCritic. This time, we selected two more games for a total of five titles for each participant. Points will then be awarded or deducted for every percentage point each pick falls above or below a 70 on OpenCritic. By the end of the year, we'll only look at the top four games, ditching the least impressive score for each person's collection of titles. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

E3 2021 concluded with the "one more announcement" moment and that game was Redfall. Since then, Xbox has closely tied itself to the game as one of its big, AAA, premium exclusives. Following the vacancy of 2022, Xbox fans hoped to have their patience rewarded when the delay for Redfall released on May 2, 2023. Well, it's here and it has arrived unspectacular fashion. Redfall currently sits at a 62 on OpenCritic across 77 critic reviews and the brand has suffered yet another brutal, embarrassing blow. How could Xbox release a game of such low quality after their commitments to first party? Is this the fault of Phil Spencer, Matt Booty, Game Pass, or something else? Is this what we're to expect from Starfield and other games from acquired talent? Indeed, the release of Redfall sends an awful message and The Dukes are far from happy. With "New York Sports energy," The Dukes prepare to take Xbox and Bethesda to task for the heinous state of Redfall and delve deeper into the matter on the state of first party. 2023 is going to be a ton of fun here at 4Player! In lieu of our usual "preview show" format, we have opted to create a "Fantasy Critic" league! This works a lot like fantasy football but publishers (players) draft games and points are dictated by their OpenCritic scores. In this episode, Carlos joins us for the initial draft and we take turns filling out the slots in our lineup! The league will consist of 12 games total per person but only 8 are selected in this initial draft. We will re-convene after E3 season to bid on our remaining 4 slots and fill out the rest of our teams. We will also provide monthly updates on the last podcast of every month so we can check in and see where we all stand as these games release.
We're making OpenCritic score predictions for 2023's most anticipated games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Starfield, Final Fantasy XVI, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Hogwarts Legacy, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Redfall, and much more.

Logan joins Apps on the 78th edition of Idle Game Chat. The Game Awards 2021 had the nominees for this year's event and as usual there was controversy at the final list. OpenCritic's highest scoring game, Forza Horizon 5 is the biggest omission and has got the conversation started around whether the jury are displaying a bit of genre snobbery by not including it.Xbox celebrated its 20th Anniversary in style by shadow dropping the beta of Halo Infinite's Multiplayer offering. We have a quick recap of some Xbox memories and then dive straight into hands on impressions. Gameplay, fun factor and the controversial progression system are all discussed and debated. The PS5 was released one year ago in the UK this past week and the lads chat about what has been a rollercoaster year for the brand. Strong sales and market appeal have been shrouded by a number of negative stories, including the cancellation of games, spotty communication and perceived lack of value when compared to their competitors. All this and more, available on YouTube, Facebook and your chosen podcast app!
Adkins joins Apps on the 76th edition of Idle Game Chat. Forza Horizon 5 has launched to a stunning 92 score on OpenCritic, the highest score of the year so far. But why are people reluctant to discuss this is a genuine Game of the Year contender? When was the last time that a Racing Game won Game of the Year and is the shun of the genre valid?Almost a million people have been playing Forza Horizon 5 this past weekend thanks to the paid Early Access options to players. It's clearly a lucrative money-making opportunity that Microsoft have exploited. Is it truly “Early Access” or is access to the game actually behind a carefully constructed paywall? Give the success seen here, how do we feel about this being extended to other games under the house of Microsoft? Would people be so willing accept this if a similar scenario plays out for the upcoming Starfield? It had been almost two decades since the last original Metroid game was released. Metroid Dread finally blesses fans with another 2D entry into this famous franchise and promises to end a narrative that has spanned 35 years. With so much expectation and baggage, how does Metroid Dread stack up? Is it a genuine Game of the Year contender or another overblown Nintendo IP living off the past?Fun show as always so check it out and if you like what you hear, drop us a review!

To finish up we just chat about how we feel about this year in games so far and then look at our OpenCritic score predictions. To close out 2020 - or start it off since this is coming out in 2021 despite the fact we recorded in 2020 - John and Neal go through their Game of the Year lists for 2020. Neal, uh, went overboard with a meticulous 30-game ranked list while John, um, looked at his OpenCritic page before we recorded and used that as a guide. We cover everything from Nintendo's first-party games to indies, and even touch on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, because that's a real game of the year type thing. Connectivity has joined Twitter, so be sure to follow @ConnectivityNWR to be up to date on any announcements. We are wanting more listener participation, so feel free to ask questions, they may show up in the show! Please send in some hard-hitting questions for the Connectivity gang to ponder over: the address is connectivity@nintendoworldreport.com

Freelance writer and game developer Becky Cunningham (RPGamer, OpenCritic) joins us this week to talk about her early experiences with the Apple ][ and how her love of SF and fantasy literature led to a lifelong relationship with interactive fiction, adventure games, and RPGs, and how she discovered she was genderqueer along the way. She also tells me about her upcoming otome game based on Robin Hood, from the perspective of Made Marian. Also, we talk cowardly paladin love interests, large kitties, the otome renaissance, fiddling with DOS for hours, game critique formats, spousal warcraft warfare stalemates, why FFVIII is a bad first JRPG, and when it's time to let go.Follow Becky on Twitter @BeckyCFreelance, and be sure to get in touch with her if you're an artist who'd be interested in working on her game. This episode of Misspent Youth is dedicated to the memory of Michael A Cunningham, editor in chief of RPGamer, who sadly passed on a few days ago. This week's guest Becky Cunningham, no relation, was a former coworker and a good friend of his. I only interacted with Mac a handful of times online, but he was a passionate and thoughtful individual who will be missed by those who knew him and those who followed his work.Intro Music "Summer Vacation in Scanline" by NurvussIntermission "Beneath the Mask" by Shoji Meguro (from Persona 5)Outro Music "トワイライトでHEART-BEAT" by パフェ♥カフェparfait♥cafe

It was a heavy week for video game news, especially this time of year, but the guys do their best to liven things up with some attempts at voice acting. Remember to tell us which character you'd be best at voicing! Sony is planning to publish games on Switch and PC as well as PS4 under a new label, Unties. From there, it goes downhill fast. EA is closing Visceral, the team currently working on the single-player Star Wars game. Activision has a patent about using matchmaking to pair people together specifically with the goal of encouraging microtransactions. The ESRB doesn't consider loot crates gambling, but OpenCritic thinks we need to start being more transparent about this kind of thing. That's just the first step in this flow-charting, pie having, gravel eating, Metal Gear-ing Trophy Talk Podcast!
