Unfortunately, the business world is full of failed businesses, and "successful" businesses with failed marriages. There is an idea that you can have a successful family, or business, but not both. With 4 awesome "Mompreneurs", I discuss how we are not choosing to be a "really good Mom", or "really good at business" - we are choosing to do both! If you just let life happen to you, you can very easily go down the path of being successful at only family or only business. But if you "take a moment and own it" - and are very intentional in what you do, you will place the proper value on family and business - and others will value what you do as well! Today's guests are: Lori Lee - Owner of Brampton Mompreneurs, Mother of 4 children Sacha Pinto - Owner of The Wolf Consulting (www.thewolfconsulting.ca), and Mississauga Mompreneurs, and Mom of 2 children (listen closely for the youngest!) Sara Clarke - mom of 4 boys, business partners with her husband in Martin Clarke and Associates, bookkeepers and business consultants Grace Moores - owner of The Moores Group, a marketing agency that specializes in sponsorships for small businesses with a community based demographic. For every single one you buy, they donate one, it’s a good brand strategy that can do some good in the world. Sarah Martin Clarke is the founder of Please & Thank You, a soap brand that offers a one for one offer donating one product for every one you buy. Sarah joins Nicole this week on Start Scale Succeed to tell her brand story and why being a business that gives back is so important. KEY TAKEAWAYS Please & Thank You partnered with The Hygiene Bank who donate hygiene products to women’s shelters and people in need. Please & Thank You also want to raise the awareness of hygiene poverty in the UK. When talking to people at trade shows, you can assign a number to each person you speak to so you can score how likely they will be to make an order from what they’ve said during conversation. Then that’s the order in which you follow up on potential leads. One of the first pieces of feedback Sarah got form a customer was them saying that they don’t buy luxury products often, but when they do they want it to go to companies like Please & Thank You who do give back. Sarah admits she was a little naive launching direct to consumer as a product brand from scratch with limited marketing investment. Some people build an audience first before launch to create at least a small base of people who might be interested in your brand. It’s harder to grow on social media now without having to pay a load of money. BEST MOMENTS ‘I love competitor research as it’s an excuse to buy lots of products and try them’ ‘I’ve learned things about the depths of Facebook I didn’t think I’d need to know’ ‘If you’ve got the idea and are prepared to put in the graft then go for it’ VALUABLE RESOURCES pleaseandthankyou.co.uk sarahclarkmartin.com Sarah on LinkedIn www.thebuyerandretailcoach.com www.instagram.com/thebuyerandretailcoach thehygienebank.com ABOUT THE GUEST Sarah is an experienced brand consultant with a demonstrated history of working in the marketing industry. Strong professional skills in brand strategy and management, product and portfolio strategy, with end-to-end brand management capabilities from consumer insight and project delivery through to in-store execution and through-the-line marketing activities. Extensive beauty brand and retail experience. Please & Thank You is a Luxury hand soap with in-built kindness. “Beautifully natural British soaps designed to bring joy whilst keeping hands safe. Our soaps are vegan, sustainably packaged and gunk free. But that’s not all. For every one you buy, we donate another to someone in need.” ABOUT THE HOST Buying & retail expert Nicole Higgins spent the last 18 years working for companies such as Primark, M&S, Debenhams and Asda, sourcing & developing products from all over the world, building strategies for blue chip businesses, and increasing bottom line sales and profit, adding over £40 million in incremental business to the bottom line. In 2000, Martin Clarke famously caught the second biggest brace in UK carp fishing in history. The fish weighed 45.08 and 46.02 respectively and were captured from Summerleaze in Berkshire. We also go in-depth about rigs, where he explained the concept behind some of his most successful ideas. He also tells the story of two potentially record-breaking carp that avoided capture!
This week we talk to Martin Clarke and listen to his wonderfully honest take on FASDs and Social Work. Martin has over 25 years of experience as a social worker in child protection and has spent the last 14 years delivering FASDs training on behalf of TACT to foster carers and other professionals. Martin talks to us about how learning about FASDs and what they are, changed his professional practice and his life. With Clare Devanney Glynn and Jessica Rutherford.
Marty was, without doubt, the best Gaelic football player of his age group. People came from all over Ireland to see him play. His performances for St Louis Grammar School, An Ríocht and County Down lead to him being scouted by the Australian Football League (AFL) and landing a dream contract with one of the top teams Collingwood, also known as 'The Magpies'. Marty spent seven years as a professional athlete. In between his career in Melbourne, he managed to come home and obtain a GAA All-Star and he helped take Down to their first All-Ireland Final in 16 years. Join me as I speak with Marty on the highs of his career and the lows, including his own Collingwood fans turning on him and being diagnosed with Addison's disease which ultimately ended his career. He shares his wisdom, his struggles, how he stays focused on the positives and his tips on how to settle back home when leaving Australia.
