OPINION: Some disturbing news came across my desk yesterday. I got a lovely email from Nicola Cranfield with the sad news that Cranfield's on Johnson St near Lambton Quay is closing. Often shops close during a recession and unpredictable times. Shops close because they go broke. Businesses close when owners have just had enough. But Cranfield's has been operating in Wellington for 33 years and reading Nicola Cranfield's email really affected me. Nicola has fought endlessly against Let's Get Wellington Moving and the Golden Mile project. She's met with counsellors, she's met with businesses, she's gone to every meeting she possibly could have gone to, just to fight the cause to save Lambton Quay from both Let's Get Wellington Moving and the Golden Mile project. She's had the acrimony of presenting to Wellington City Council with councillors not even looking her in the eye, looking down at their devices not caring what she has to say.,not caring what she and her mother had done for our city over 33 years. Absolutely no respect whatsoever. But that didn't stop Nicola from fighting. That didn't stop Nicola from being a proud Wellingtonian wanting her successful family business to carry on against all the distractions and inconvenience that was thrown at her by those two major projects and our council. Things got so frustrating for her that she decided that she would not renew her long term lease and go month to month. Unfortunately for us in Wellington it didn't work for Nicola Cranfield and her shop is closing. A Wellington institution gone, just like that. It's interesting Nicola is not blaming or even bringing into the equation the public sector job losses due to government cuts. I've met Nicola a few times she's the most positive, bright, energetic and focused businesswoman you could ever expect to meet. She's someone you talk to and say to yourself ‘gosh aren't we lucky to have a person like that running a business in our city'. Well no longer; she joins the long list of fabulous Wellingtonians who ran amazing businesses that got caught up in the downward spiral and are out… An article in the Herald today from Thomas Coughlan, outlining the effects and breaking down the job losses by numbers is very interesting. It shows it's more of a self-perpetuating downhill spiral than actual cash disappearing from the community. People that haven't lost their job still have the disposable income to spend - they're just adjusting and being extremely careful. Even last night I met a couple who hadn't lost their jobs, still had disposable income and they felt guilty for going out. It felt wrong to them, with everything going on. Our city is in a bad place, and no, it's not just because of these public service cuts, which much of us would agree are needed to some extent. No, its a wider issue. It's an economy on the slump, it's a council that doesn't seem to understand the big issues, its uncertainty over projects like the Golden Mile. I love this city, I love it a lot - but Wellington doesn't feel like it did five, ten or twenty years ago. We're in a slump, we're in a spiral - and I think most of us know it. A team of Aston University researchers has been awarded a prestigious £500,000 grant to lessen the environmental impact of cooling - one of the UK's fastest-growing energy needs. They will be exploring new methods of using renewable energy to power clean cooling technologies to alleviate the increasing stress on national energy supplies. The new network, which will be led by Aston University, is called Renewable Energy Access for Future UK Net-Zero Cooling (Reef-UKC). It is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and supports a consortium of Aston University experts led by Dr Ahmed Rezk. Dr Rezk said: "There's an urgent need across various sectors, both in the UK and globally, to reduce carbon footprints and adopt more sustainable practices for cooling. However, the cooling industry, which plays a critical role in sectors like food and beverage, data centres, steel, cement, pharmaceuticals, supermarkets, hospitals, and district cooling hasn't received the same attention in terms of sustainable innovation. Reef-UKC is an impact-driven network designed to address this important gap. "Reef-UKC offers a collaborative platform for academia and industry to come together and explore sustainable cooling solutions, particularly focusing on technologies that harness waste heat and other forms of renewables. It also aims to expand the project's outreach to regions like India, China, Africa, and the Middle East, where cooling is a critical requirement in many industries." A 2023 study shows that cooling already accounts for 10-20% of the UK's total energy consumption, and demand is expected to multiply in the years ahead causing more heat waves and stressing the national grid. The Aston University research team believes that the issue is further compounded by the growing cooling requirements of emerging industries like hydrogen production, where ammonia production alone demands 2.8 gigajoules of cooling per ton. The Reef-UKC network will also focus on circular economy business models, policies, and regulations. As a first step, the research team has announced a £100K seed funding call to support eight to 10 new research seed-funding projects which lead to larger, multidisciplinary, and impact-driven projects. Professor Patricia Thornley is the director of Aston University's Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI), which was founded to explore sustainable resources to deliver an affordable, resilient, and low-carbon energy future. She said: "Through this project, Aston University reaffirms its commitment to leadership in renewable energy innovation. Reef-UKC represents a vital step toward a net-zero cooling solution that not only supports environmental goals but also aligns with the UK's economic, societal, and policy landscape." The network aims to bring together a community and develop a research agenda that will provide an opportunity to drive forward research and secure UK leadership as part of the engineering net zero mission-inspired priority to discover and develop the next generation of renewable energy technologies. Aston University will be working with researchers from London South Bank University, the University of Oxford, the University of Birmingham, the University of Warwick, the University of Glasgow, the University of Edinburgh, Brunel University London, Ulster University, Imperial College and the University of Cranfield. They will also be collaborating with several industrial partners including Star Refrigeration, Phase Change Materials Products Ltd, Tyseley Energy Park, PAK Engineering, Birmingham City Council, and Belfast City Council. Aston University's history has been intertwined with the history of Birmingham, a remarkable city that once was the heartland of the Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing powerhouse of the world. Born out of the First Industrial Revolution, Aston University has a proud and distinct heritage dating back to its formation as the School of Met...

Upmarket Wellington homewares store Cranfields will continue to trade - but might move out of the capital. The shop's closure was announced months ago, with owner Nicola Cranfield blaming uncertainty around the Golden Mile transport project, to effectively ban cars from a number of central city streets. The store is now looking for new premises. Nicola Cranfield says she's had a conversation with Hastings Council. "I was curious to know whether they were about to wrap up all those streets and remove parking and bring in a lot of cones. Fortunately, they laughed and said - why would we do that to our retailers? That was heartening." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Professor Lucy Blue speaks to Dr Lisa Briggs and Dr Peter Campbell from the University of Cranfield who have been searching the deep waters of the Straits of Sicily using micro-AUVs - autonomous underwater vehicles. Deployment of these small, agile vehicles has enabled the team to map large areas of this busy maritime highway of the Mediterranean. The team aim to locate historic remains and ancient shipwrecks, and have consulted local fisherman for potential targets as they trawl the seabed and often snag remains in their nets, even including statues. These mini autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can be deployed in multiples, thus covering large areas of the seabed. They are relatively cheap to purchase and easier to use and programme than larger AUV's. Fitted with cameras might they become a principal tool not only for maritime archaeology, but also other disciplines such as marine biology. Learn how these vehicles have democratised survey previously limited to researchers with much larger budgets.

A new scientific report from the Universities of Oxford and Cranfield has raised questions about the ambition of New Zealand's methane reduction targets- and the responsibility falling on farmers. Federated Farmers president Wayne Langford says farmers have been told they're responsible for half of New Zealand's overall emissions, but the report says otherwise. "The current targets that are in place- our farmers just aren't going to accept. We don't mind doing our part and playing our role in what we have to do, but we can't do it with unrealistic targets." Understanding meaningful coincidences parallels the fable of the elephant and the blind men--there are several aspects that make up the whole. Jessica Pryce-Jones interviews Bernie about the categories of coincidence in his book Meaningful Coincidences. The shape and complexity of meaningful coincidences is coming into clearer focus! You can purchase Dr. Beitman's new book here, Meaningful Coincidences, available now! https://www.innertraditions.com/books/meaningful-coincidences Jess started her career in finance where she learned about numbers, strategy and leadership. After 10 years in the corporate world, she did a psychology degree; she wanted to understand why some of her bosses were brilliant and others were frankly dismal. Those insights launched a new career facilitating, coaching, designing interventions and writing. Coachees and delegates tell her she's warm, funny, challenging and rooted in practicality. Most importantly, she believes in using hard, soft, and intuitive information to get to the heart of complex and opaque professional issues. Tapping into this different knowledge gives fresh insight into how to solve problems, particularly around our worries, work and wellbeing. www.webpsyched.com She's worked as adjunct faculty in leadership development at many business schools including Cambridge Judge, Cass, Cornell, Chicago Booth, Cranfield, London Business School, and Saïd (Oxford); she's also a Fellow of Harvard's Institute of Coaching. Finally, she's written two books (Happiness at Work: Maximizing Your Psychological Capital for Success and Running Great Meetings & Workshops For Dummies) and she's trying hard to finish a third, Intuition at Work. When she's not working, she loves weightlifting and walking her dog in the woods. Romans 3:21-31 is considered one of the most impactful passages in the book of Romans. The New Testament scholar C.E.B. Cranfield calls this section the center and heart of the whole letter. In this section, Paul teaches about justification by faith and the grace of God. He explains that no one can be saved by their own righteousness, but only through belief in Jesus Christ. Paul also encourages believers to live faithful, obedient lives to bring glory and honor to God. This passage offers a powerful reminder of God's great love and mercy that is available to all who believe.
Cranfield Aerospace Solutions' (CAeS) is an established aerospace business of over 33 years, with 100+ staff and is one of very few aerospace SMEs globally to have both whole aircraft concept design capability and to hold a range of regulatory approvals for the design and manufacture of modifications to existing aircraft. CAeS is based at Cranfield Airport, Bedfordshire, UK where the company has access to some of the UK's most advanced aviation test and research facilities. Phase 1 of their roadmap is “Project Fresson” – the conversion of a Britten-Norman Islander 9-seat aircraft from conventional fossil fuel to that of gaseous hydrogen propulsion. This development is set to deliver the world's first fully certified, truly green, passenger-carrying aircraft using hydrogen fuel cell technology. The end solution will deliver emissions-free commercial air travel and is planned to be certified for passenger flight in 2026. CAeS ultimate ambition is to become an aircraft designer and manufacturer of zero emissions aircraft. "We have a growing population, lots of changes in the climate, lots of greenhouse gas emissions which are jeopardising our food production, and we are at risk of not being able to feed the world." Natalia Falagán, Lecturer in Food Science and Technology, Cranfield University, succinctly sets out some of the major issues the world is facing, and why students are queuing up to enrol on her courses. Enthusiasm for the subject is key, she says, and students "will get that enthusiasm and passion back from the lecturers". In this episode of the Career Conversations podcast series, made in partnership with Cranfield University, we delve into the detail of what the courses cover and how they can set students on the path to a rewarding career. Cranfield's Masters in Future Food Sustainability is described as taking a whole system approach to solving some of the biggest challenges facing the global food system. Natalia says usually food people look at food, energy people look at energy, and water people look at water. "That's not going to take us anywhere," she says. "We need co-operation." That co-operative approach presents itself in a number of different ways. One of the key elements of the course is the opportunity to work alongside industry. Students work with Cranfield's industry partners to ensure they get real world experience and a real sense of what is actually happening on the ground. Another key element is the group project, where students work alongside others on different Masters courses at Cranfield to solve a problem posed by an industry partner or academic. Natalia says this helps students develop crucial soft skills, as well as broadening their knowledge base. Kate Jones studied on the course in 2021-22, leaving behind her job and salary. Despite the risk, she says she felt confident taking the leap "because I was following my passion. I knew there would be an answer at the end of it". Future Food Sustainability MSc at a glance Duration: One year full-time, two or three years part-time Who it's for: Graduates who are passionate about food production and the sustainability of our food system. Potential future roles: Technical managers, sustainability managers, technical development managers, product technologists, resilience officers, supply chain/logistics analysts, commodity analysts, regulatory affairs advisers, and policy officers. Find out more and apply Cranfield also runs a Masters in Food Systems and Management, which is slightly more technical. Natalia says students often go on to work in quality and safety of food products, as well as certification. Food Systems and Management MSc at a glance Duration: One year full-time, two or three years part-time Who it's for: Science or technology graduates, or professionals already in the food industry looking to further their career. You will be passionate about improving major worldwide problems such as food security and food safety. Potential future roles: Management, food innovation, production, logistics, research or academia, retail sector, food storage. Find out more and apply Listen to the full episode to find out more about the big challenges facing the global food system, what life is like on the Cranfield University campus, and how you might go about choosing which course is right for you. Natalia Falagán, Lecturer in Food Science and Technology, Cranfield University Dr Natalia Falagan is an agricultural engineer by training and is driven by the need to reduce food waste and improve food security; while maintaining the quality and safety of fresh produce across the supply chain. Her work focuses on optimising food systems from an integrated perspective, considering the impacts on the environment to develop mitigating actions for a more sustainable and resilient supply chain. In particular, she investigates the underlying ripening and senescence mechanisms of fruit and vegetables and develops innovative strategies for postharvest management, combining both biology and technology fields. Natalia is a Member of the Royal Society of Biology, Member of the Institute of Agricultural Engineers, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and Member of the Scientific Advisory Committees in the Food Standards Agency. In 2021, Natalia won the 'Top 50 Women in Engineering: Engineering Heroes' award and a medal awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering (Spain) in 2022 for her work towards food loss and waste reduction. Kate Jones, PhD student, Cranfield University Kate studied for an MSc in Future Food Sustainability at Cranfield University in 2021-2. After starting out as a teacher, Kate gained an MSc in Development Studies, and went on to work in education for sustainability, including at the Fairtrade Foundation (2010-2017) and Marine Stewardship Council (since 2015). She has nearly 20 years' experience managing major projects to create educational and awareness raising campaigns for adults and young people, including at Comic Relief (2005-2010), with Greenpeace (2008-10) and at Childnet (2018-21), where she co-ordinated Safer Internet Day, which in 2021 reached 51% of UK young people aged 8-17 and nearly 4 in 10 of their parents. Kate's now starting a PhD at Cranfield, focusing on the role of early warning systems in food supply chain disruption, and she is looking to use this, as well as her work experience, to help create an equitable, sustainable food system able to provide for people and planet in an uncertain future.
The pandemic has led to increased levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal feelings among the UK's farming population - and the Government must take urgent action to improve rural mental heath services. That's the finding of a report out today from Cranfield, Exeter, Reading and Sheffield Universities…which says some primary mental-healthcare services can be inaccessible and inadequately suited to rural areas. We visit a stunning and slaughter facility for farmed salmon and hear calls for the technology to be used for wild caught fish too. Find out more about this event on our website: https://bit.ly/3VhOCQA That seems a pretty simple question, and also a very fundamental one. But the answer to it is not one upon which practitioners, regulators, policy makers, and more particularly the customers of the industry agree. It is not the perspective from which finance is typically taught at our business schools. We all understand an effective finance industry is vital to our prosperity. Yet the former top industry regulator concluded that much of what takes place within the industry is 'not socially useful'. When asked to find one word to describe developments in the finance industry, citizens described it as ‘corrupt'. How can such an important and successful industry be held in such disregard? Based on his award winning course at Cambridge University, David Pitt-Watson will discuss the evidence on the purpose of our industry, and how well that purpose is fulfilled by our current institutions. He will also reflect on whether current developments in the industry are likely to lead to improvement. Speaker: David Pitt-Watson is an investor, and a leading thinker in the world of finance. Co-founder and head of the responsible investing activity at Federated Hermes, he has chaired the UN Environment Finance Initiative. He has sat on the board of organisations as varied as KPMG, Oxfam, NESTA and Oxford Analytica. He has been a visiting professor at Cranfield and Cambridge Universities where he now a visiting fellow. His books, published by Harvard and Yale Universities have been translated into five languages.

The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: Benefits Management came about from a British Standard document (BS 6079) Many contracts are adversarial. Law is about consent, not compulsion. The Project Control Implementation Standards guide is still being written Having a common data format across all projects would enable better data analytics Anyone can contribute to the development and elaboration of a Standard It is possible to time phase the benefits over the course of a project. Helene is the CEO of Robinsons PLC, one of only 5% of the UK' s FTSE 500 CEO' s who is female .When I first met her she had established herself in the packaging industry and was sharing insights about good packaging on a judging panel for food awards. For many years she was at M&S latterly as head of food and drink packaging , and she really valued her foundations learned there in ethical supply chains something she has taken with her to every role since. She then stepped onto the Supply side and is now using all her knowledge gleaned in retail as the customer , in her role as CEO of Robinsons , to help them keep focused on customer needs.Cranfield University highlighted her as one of their top 100 women to watch, she is acutely aware that she is one of a very small number of FTSE 500 female cEO's nd thinks it is important for women to see people doing roles they may aspire to. She relishes her role a CEO which allows her to help give opportunities to others in the business and prepare them for roles they will go onto in Robinsons, or elsewhere Her interest in people, hearing their stories, how she can help them and help their careers is a common thread in every role she has done and loved. If she has any spare time it is spent with her family and dog and she also enjoys running and being outdoors. Glenn Cranfield is President and CEO at Nashville Rescue Mission, and Host of the Real Hope podcast. In this conversation, Glenn talks with me about four key values that guide his work and ministry at Nashville Rescue Mission, including: Extravagant Faith – Sometimes we’re forced into situations where all we have is faith. Impossible situations where people think there’s no hope. Radical Hospitality – Understanding that the person who is with you in the moment is the most important person in the world, and treating them that way. Focusing on showing others love, dignity, and value. Excellence – We can’t ever be perfect, and we know that. But we can strive to be perfect, and in that, practice excellence in all we do. Culture of Honor – Imagine how amazing the world would be if we each individually would strive to put others above ourselves, and to show dignity, value, and worth to others. We also talked about conflict inside organizations. Unlike some leaders in our sector, Glenn’s perspective is that conflict is both good and necessary. In fact, he makes a key point by sharing that the popular scripture verse (Prov 27:17), “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens the wits of another” requires conflict — because it’s only in coming into contact that two pieces of iron can sharpen each other. But healthy conflict means we’ll engage directly with one ano
In season 2, episode 5, Simon talks to Nick Jenkins. After graduation, Nick spent eight years trading sugar in Moscow for Glencore. In 1998 he returned to the UK to study for an MBA at Cranfield, after which he started Moonpig.com, the personalised greeting card retailer. By 2011 the business had over 5 million customers and Nick sold a majority of his holding to Photobox. Nick now divides his time between the charity sector and investing in early stage businesses which led to him joining the panel of BBC2 Dragons' Den in 2015 and 2016. He now has a portfolio of 19 angel investments, mostly in ed-tech, med tech and e-commerce.
