I have learned over the years that conventional thinking is often WRONG. We tend to fall into the groove that if other businesses are doing something and if there are hundreds of consultants and authors talking about it, the ideas that are being discussed must be effective. Contrary thinkers and writers are often a minority and therefore may not reach the audience that needs to hear their message. Gary Heil, a Washington Speakers Bureau exclusive speaker and co-author of Choose Love Not Fear, joins me in this edition of the Business Builders Show to speak with Alfie Kohn. Kohn's criticisms of competition and rewards have been widely discussed and debated. His books include No Contest: The Case Against Competition, Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's, Praise, and Other Bribes, and School Beyond Measure & Other Unorthodox Essays About Education.. I hope you will step away from conventional thinking for a few minutes and allow yourself to be a student. The conversation that Michael McHale of PSA Systems and I (Marty Wolff) had with Kirk J. Elken of Securitas Global, is one of the most important topics I have ever covered in my 10 years as a business journalist! Kirk's company, securitasglobal.com helps executives sleep better at night. How and when you extend credit to your customers has never been more important. Covid-19 has put many businesses, potentially even some of your "best" customers in danger of not being able to pay for the products or services you have supplied. The "normal" credit standards you applied in the past may not be relevant today. You need specialized help to protect your business from cash flow difficulties and possibly disaster for you. Mitigating your credit risk is vitally important. And, there are many positive reasons why a firm like securitasglobal.com can be an important asset for your business. Such as: if you manage your credit risks, you may be able to extend better credit terms to your customer, giving you a competitive advantage. And, your lenders will most likely be more cooperative with you, knowing you are protecting yourself from potential losses when a customer does not pay you. You can reach Kirk Elken at (215) 901-6590. His website is securitasglobal.com. If you want to learn more about Michael McHale and his company Production Systems Automation, go to psasystems.com. I was anxious to talk to Jules Pieri and Joanne Domeniconi about what happened at The Grommet, a company they founded together about 12 years ago. They are no longer there. What happened?A company that was formed to be a platform for the "little guys." For the "Makers", folks who had a dream, started small by making and selling products to friends and family and then needed help to grow into a real business. Jules and Joanne share with us their journey from the beginning to their departure from the company. "Building a business over 12 years is HARD! An unhappy investor complicates things even more. It was actually becoming unhealthy." If you want to grow your business and are considering taking on an investor, this is a must listen to interview. Some brands that we all recognize were launched during Jules and Joanne's tenure at The Grommet: Bombas Socks, Fit Bit, Goldie Blox, Love Pop, Otter Box, Soda Stream - impressive lineup!Thank you for taking time to listen and learn with us on the Business Builders Show with Marty Wolff. In this episode of the Business Builders Show, guest host Kelly Hoey leads the conversation with Julie Elberfeld, SVP, Card Technology and Executive Sponsor of Diversity and Inclusion for Technology at Capital One about a new survey conducted by Capital One focusing on success of women executives in tech. This is not the usual “women in tech” survey. As Julie shares with Kelly and host, Marty Wolff, this new survey flips the focus of the conversation away from the myriad of reasons why women leave tech to reflect on the success of women (like Julie) who have climbed the tech ladder. A startling 56% of women in tech leave tech by the mid-point of their career however, as Julie notes, if we only focus on failure rates, we overlook the x-factor of successful women and lose a vital opportunity to change representation in tech. One key finding from the study: strong peer networks helped women stay the course in their tech career. From a sense of purpose to the flexible nature of the work along with determination and grit, there are success lessons in this conversation with Julie for those who are in tech or are considering a career in tech as well as insights for the employers who are seeking to retain or recruit tech talent.Guest host Kelly Hoey frequently partners with Capital One, enabling us to bring unique insights from corporate leaders to the Business Builders Show audience.Find the women in tech survey discussed in the episode here: https://ecm.capitalone.com/DevExchange/assets/PDFs/WIT_Report_2019.pdfCheck out Julie's post “Breaking Barriers: Why Diversity in Tech Is Everyone's Job” - https://www.capitalone.com/tech/culture/breaking-barriers-why-diversity-in-tech-is-everyones-job/ Learn more about Capital Dev Academy (CODA). For the past decade Nisa Amoils has been investing in frontier technologies. What the heck is that? Frontier technology is the cutting edge, emerging disruptive innovation that is transforming our lives (i.e. blockchain, crypto currency, AI, virtual reality, drones). Nisa is the author of the best selling book “WTF Is Happening? Women Tech Founders On The Rise” which features profiles of a dozen female founders in frontier technology whose remarkable companies are making a difference. One WTF example Nisa shares with us in this Business Builders Show episode is Carrie Shaw founder of Embodied Labs, a wellness company leveraging virtual reality in immersive health education. In our conversation Nisa enlightens us on blockchain, busts the myth on the credentials needed to start (or invest in) frontier technology (what's needed is intense curiosity, not a computer science degree), and why focusing on the ‘so what' of technology is essential. For the entrepreneurs Nisa interacts with, the passion to build companies is personal - which is why she is determined to reallocate capital to them and shine a bright light on their stories - and yes, their stories are ones you want to hear.
