In this week's fire-happy episode we take a deep-dive into the rare and controversial phenomena of spontaneous human combustion! In the free show we discuss the well documented case of Dr. Bently whose story rarely accompanies the jaw-dropping photography of his remains. We also present the best documented cases throughout history all the way back to the medieval era and discuss the known risk factors that make somebody more likely to suddenly burst into flames. To wrap things up for the free show we conclude with a closer look at the infamous case of Mary Reeser or the CinderWoman as she is known. For those enjoying the extended episode we go into the metaphysical dimension and explore what may or may not be happening in terms of occult energies and paranormal causes before concluding with an in-depth look at the rarely discussed, mind-melting case of Mrs. Helen Ann Conway who was reduced to ashes in less time than it takes to microwave a TV dinner. There have been a few hundred cases of spontaneous human combustion reported, with some reported instances from as early as the 17th century. They were highly debated as to whether they were truly a case of spontaneous combustion or something else - and the vast majority went ignored, written off as nothing more than an urban legend. However, when 67-year-old Mary Hardy Reeser was discovered completely reduced to a pile of burnt debris and ashes, law enforcement stepped in to investigate what had happened. The FBI even became involved in the case, documenting evidence that just didn't seem to add up. Still to this day, it isn't clear what happened to Mary. Spontaneous human combustion refers to the death from a fire that originates without an external source of ignition and people believe that the fire starts inside the victim's body.  Many cases have been cited as SHC, but it's never been scientifically proven.  If this is a real phenomenon, why doesn't it happen more often?  https://www.drinkingthecoolaid.com/Resources:Is spontaneous human combustion real? - HISTORYThe Mystery of Spontaneous Human Combustion – Mystic SciencesSpontaneous Human Combustion - Historic MysteriesSpontaneous Human Combustion: Facts & Theories | Live ScienceFacts About the Not-So Spontaneous Human Combustion - ExemploreHow Spontaneous Human Combustion Works | HowStuffWorksCornelia Zangheri Bandi - WikipediaAre Farts Flammable? The idea that someone can randomly combust into flames is a terrifying one, it is a theory that multiple people believe can happen, and others believe can not. Even though some scientists claim there is evidence that this is a true possibility, it is still not one that happens very often, if at all. So usually they will find some other reason that someone randomly died from a fire that seemed to only be contained to their bodies. Like the case of Mary Reeser. The mysterious incident where a woman was caught on fire, and all that was left in the pile of ashes, were questions.

What exactly happened to Mary Reeser on the morning of July 2, 1951 in her St. Petersburg, FL apartment?  The chair she was sitting in and most of her body was reduced to ash and cinders yet the rest of the apartment was virtually untouched by the flames that had to reach temperatures of 1300 degrees.  Some things in the apartment were melted and there was soot and smoke damage on the walls above 4 feet and the ceiling.  Did she spontaneously combust as some of the theories say?  Or did she accidentally burn herself up in her sleep?  Or was it a case of something more sinister? We speculate on these theories in this episode of Will Continue To Monitor.  This episode is sponsored by Eko Health.  Learn more about their digital stethoscopes at www.ekohealth.com and use code JSP for $50 off your order.   This episode is sponsored by CBD Stat.  Learn more about their high quality, THC free CBD oil.  They offer a 40% discount for healthcare workers at www.cbdstat.care/healthcare and for our listeners that aren't in healthcare you can use code JSP20 at checkout for 20% off your order.  www.cbdstat.care

I'll share a few of those strange crimes. (Creepy Crimes and Crazy Criminals) *** One of the reasons we find chimpanzees so interesting is because they are so much like humans – in body shape, the way they express themselves, it's eerie sometimes. But still, we know they are just apes. Then there is the strange case of Oliver – a chimpanzee that also appeared to be human. Or was he a human that appeared to be a chimpanzee? Or, is it possible, that Oliver was a genuine genetic hybrid of the two? We'll look at his incredibly strange story. (Oliver, The Humanzee) *** Some hauntings are more terrifying than others – and some are stranger than others. What happened to the Palzon family in Zaragoza, Spain possibly qualifies for both. They didn't have a typical haunting – this was no poltergeist or spirit of a recently passed person… they were terrorized by a horrifying goblin. (The Zaragoza Goblin) *** Most haunted paintings are hundreds of years old – but one in particular was painted in the late 20th Century, and to many, it is the most disturbing painting they've ever laid eyes on. (The Hands Resist Him) *** When police found her in 1951, she was almost entirely ash. But mysteriously, the rest of her apartment remained almost perfectly intact. We'll look at the death of Mary Reeser – which became known as “The Cinder Woman Case”. In the summer of 1951, Mary Reeser — a widowed grandmother who lived near her son's family in St. Petersburg, Florida — burned to death in her small apartment. No one knew until the next morning when her landlady tried to deliver a telegram and found Mary's doorknob hot to the touch. It was as if only her body and the chair had caught fire. Nearby newspapers sat unburnt; smoke stains gathered only at the ceiling. Investigators saw no reason why a fire would have started — and it seemed to many that Mary Reeser was a victim of spontaneous human combustion. This case has so many twists and turns and all the evidence seems to point to one very peculiar cause. I won't give it away because it's something we've NEVER covered on the podcast so far! There's gonna be talk of toots, some lady who surely won't be winning a "Landlady of the Year" award ANYTIME SOON that's for sure &&& a fun story about my little brother and my 3rd grade female anatomy teacher. ;)  SOURCES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hVrSEWrKDY&list=PLD8iUdp33PqSmH4NjDm6lk1YiNUhLCxj4&index=14 https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1998/08/23/dr-richard-reeser-jr-88-former-mound-park-hospital-staff-chief/ https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida/2019/10/17/spontaneous-combustion-in-st-petersburg-the-curious-case-of-mary-reeser/ https://www.thedeadhistory.com/the-mysterious-death-of-mary-hardy-reeser/

Throughout history, there are reported cases of Spontaneous Human Combustion, but are these stories real? Can people simply burst into flames with no apparent source of ignition? In 1951, Mary Reeser’s body was found completely incinerated, with only a pile of ash, her skull, and her left foot still in her slipper remaining. Curiously, her apartment was untouched by the fire. Was she a victim of this bizarre phenomenon or is the truth too hot to handle?   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For well over a century, some have claimed that people can suddenly and inexplicably explode into a ball of fire... WTF Moments: There have been over 200 deaths caused by spontaneous combustion in the past 300 years- Like cause of death was listed as spontaneous combustion...Under regular circumstances, the human body, which is made up of 60-70 percent water, simply does not possess the elements needed to combust — high heat and flammable material. Experts can attest that fires burning so hot as to turn human bone to ash don’t leave surrounding areas untouched, yet SHC occurs without the rest of the room or surroundings going up in flames. One of the most famous cases involved Mary Reeser, an elderly woman found by her landlady when she saw smoke and noticed the door handle was hot. When the police entered her apartment, Mary's body was completely burnt except for one leg. The most recent case was reported in 2010 to Michael Faherty in Galway, Ireland. The coroner declared his death to be due to spontaneous combustion considering that there was no other apparent cause.
