I was in Dubai Airport waiting for a flight home when I heard the devastating news that one of my best friends, Paul McGlade, had died suddenly. I was in shocked disbelief and broke down in tears. One week later I am recording this podcast both as a memorial to a great friendship and as a wake-up call to myself (and anyone who is listening) as to the importance of healing rifts and keeping friendships alive. In this podcast I recall three destinations I visited with Paul: Goa in India, Marbella and London. Destinations that have given me precious memories of a friend that will last a lifetime. Rest in peace Paul and thanks for these memories! What Can We Do In These Powerful Times?

Prof Jacquie McGlade (Twitter, Wikipedia) is an administrator, academic, advocate and more besides. Currently she is Professor of Natural Prosperity, Sustainable Development and Knowledge Systems at UCL (which is how I know her) and a lecturer at Strathmore Business School in Nairobi, which is where she lives. She is married to a Maasai village chief. In a frankly amazing career, Jacquie has been a scientist, the executive director of the European Environment Agency, and the Chief Scientist at UNEP. She is also a co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Downforce Technologies, a pioneer in science-led, data-driven land management solutions focused on optimising soil health, soil organic carbon levels, and biodiversity (I had a small part in setting up Downforce Technologies).Jacquie has a rare combination of (Western) science and indigenous knowledge. She is like the fish she studied for her PhD, able to travel into the oceans and back into fresh water. The striking themes are on:-The need for high quality data people trust so they can make new decisions.-The importance of having enough people in society trying something new, so society can evolve.-Ensuring her village can thrive without Western tourism income.LinksUCL Institute for Global ProsperityUNEPUNDPIlya Prigogine, Nobel prize-winning chemist, was one of the foundational thinkers of what is now called complex systems, because of his discoveries of self-organisation.UCL Citizen Science AcademyWellbeing Economy AllianceChris Smaje -- A Small Farm FutureJacquie's Gresham Lectures are at the bottom of this link.Achim SteinerCrispin TickellVincent OgotuVandana Shiva Timings0:50 - Q1 What are you doing now? She finished a 10-year stint as Director of Interactive at TVOntario and an 18-month stint as the Director of Interactive at Q Media Solutions to start her own company, Analytical Engine Interactive Inc. in her native Canada. But if you grew up in the 1980s, you likely know Christine McGlade for an entirely different reason altogether – and if you say "I don't know" where I know that name from, you should prepare to be slimed. A child actor who never had a desire to be one by her own admission, McGlade – nicknamed "Moose" – was the original host of You Can't Do That on Television (YCDTOT), the first kid-based sketched show on Nickelodeon. (Yes, even before All That .... Or the All That reboot currently airing on the network.) Airing on the network from 1979-1990, the show featuring a number of recurring bits including its Laff In-style locker room jokes, the firing squad, the less-than-hygienic Barth's Burgers and of course, the infamous green slime. Now working in an entirely different industry than the one that made her famous, McGlade's entrepreneurial nature has seen her use her ingenuity to make her own career path ...On this episode, McGlade talks with Tabari about what she's been doing since she left TV behind, Canada's great entertainment ambassadors, her love of math, answers all (or at the very least, many) of the questions you have about YCDTOT ... And an unexpected thing the two of them have in common.Check out this episode and others you may have missed at https://atight45.buzzsprout.com/or wherever you get your podcasts today! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.08.331397v1?rss=1 Authors: Wybenga-Groot, L. E., McGlade, C. J. Abstract: The Src-like adaptor proteins (SLAP/SLAP2) bind to CBL E3 ubiquitin ligase to down regulate antigen, cytokine, and tyrosine kinase receptor signaling. In contrast to phospho-tyrosine dependent binding of CBL substrates through its tyrosine kinase binding domain (TKBD), CBL TKBD associates with the C-terminal tail of SLAP2 in a phospho-independent manner. To understand the distinct nature of this interaction, a purification protocol for SLAP2 in complex with CBL TKBD was established and the complex crystallized. However, determination of the complex crystal structure was hindered by apparent SLAP2 degradation during the crystallization process, such that only CBL TKBD residues could be modeled initially. Close examination of the CBL TKBD structure revealed a unique dimer interface that included two short segments of electron density of unknown origin. To elucidate which residues of SLAP2 to model in this unassigned density, a co-expression system was generated to test SLAP2 deletion mutants and define the minimal SLAP2 binding region. As well, SLAP2 degradation products were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Model building and map generation features of the Phenix software package were employed, leading to successful modeling of the C-terminal tail of SLAP2 in the unassigned electron density segments. In today’s episode, Patti sits down with Atlantic 10 commissioner and a Women Leaders past president, Bernie McGlade. Bernie is truly a legend in college athletics: She’s been decorated with accolades as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. Here are just the highlights: After an amazing undergraduate basketball career at the University of North Carolina, Bernie went to Georgia Tech in 1981, where she became one of the youngest Division I head women’s coaches in the nation and the first full-time female coach at the institution. She was already breaking down barriers at the age of 23!  After 17 years at Georgia Tech, Bernie spent 11 at the Atlantic Coast Conference where she absolutely transformed the ACC’s women’s basketball tournament, which resulted in at-capacity crowds and an extensive outreach program that’s still in place. And today, as commissioner of the Atlantic-10, she’s been instrumental in creating a strategic plan that’s extended the reach of the conference throughout multiple media outlets. Bernie’s all about “planning your work and working your plan,” and, wow, have her plans paid off!  Head to womenleadersincollegesports.org for more about us and to become a member! Series 2-Episode 22 is entitled "Young Guns" as we speak to two of Irish football's brightest talents in Dundalk's Georgie Kelly and Dylan McGlade, who has been grabbing all the headlines in the First Division with Longford this season. There's a look back on the last 16 action from the FAI cup, a review of the quarter-finals draw as well as our usual St.Mel's brewing prediction game. Finally, Burke & Brier sink their teeth into the Declan Rice situation.

“Another Beginning” by Michael McGlade (Originally published in Shimmer #29.) The Real Beginning Ógán loses Niamh to his best friend Malachy. Ógán and Niamh had been high school sweethearts, and the three of them had been inseparable -- the Three Blind Mice. Ógán stumbled onto this scene: the affair in full swing, the pair of them at it like otters in his best friend's bed (he'd seen a documentary about how otters held hands when they slept -- but this right now was absolutely not cute). Ógán had been let inside by a still-stoned flatmate, the squawking pair growing louder as he raced down the long, cement hallway toward that familiar sound -- knowing it was Niamh behind the locked bedroom door, his teeth zinging like when foil shorts out your fillings. Some things can never be un-seen. Michael McGlade is a freelance writer living in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
