In this episode, we welcome Jeannie Wiarda, LMSW, a Medical Social Worker at the Adult Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Center at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Jeannie has been a Medical Social Worker at Corewell Health for 20 years including 14 years in Hospice and Palliative Care Inpatient; time in the Emergency Room prior to that, and has currently spent three years in bone marrow transplant. Jeannie provides insight into her work with transplant patients, particularly those navigating chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), offering a comprehensive view of her role and strategies for supporting survivors through their journeys.Jeannie explains that her role as a social worker encompasses the entire transplant process—from the pre-transplant evaluation to post-transplant care. She helps patients address barriers like financial challenges, housing, and psychological trauma, tailoring support to each individual's unique needs. Her involvement extends through the hospital stay and into recovery, offering continuity of care during this vulnerable time.A key theme is the interplay between stress, trauma, and the transplant experience. Jeannie highlights the impact of chronic stress on the brain, emphasizing the importance of caregivers who provide practical and emotional support. She underscores the necessity of self-care for caregivers, advocating for planned respite and support systems to sustain their well-being.Jeannie shares actionable strategies for patients and caregivers to find hope and purpose amid the challenges of GVHD. These include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, engaging in fulfilling activities, and staying connected with others. She stresses the value of education, encouraging patients to leverage resources like the nbmtLINK, BMT InfoNet, LLS, and the GVHD Alliance to empower themselves with knowledge and advocacy skills.Jeannie emphasizes finding ways to “live life” despite the limitations GVHD may impose. She recalls stories of patients adapting activities to their current abilities, referencing another podcast by the LINK where we talked to a survivor who switched to an e-bike for outdoor exploration. Jeannie also advocates for fostering connections through support groups and meaningful activities, such as volunteering, to regain a sense of purpose.Jeannie concludes with advice on processing grief and fear, embracing compassion, and accessing professional mental health resources, including cognitive behavioral therapy such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), for addressing trauma. Her compassionate, holistic approach demonstrates the profound impact of social work in transforming survivorship into a journey of resilience and empowerment.More:GVHD Alliance: https://www.gvhdalliance.orgLink to LLS free Nutrition Consultations: https://www.lls.org/managing-your-cancer/food-and-nutritionBook: The Body Keeps the Score: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Score-Healing-Trauma/dp/0143127748Thank you to our sponsors. Jayne Amelia talks with a devoted and talented child therapist, Kylie. Kylie is a School Therapist working for a non-profit organization providing therapy to students ages 5-22 who live in the residences on campus, or come from homes in the nearby community. These are children who need additional support and aren't able to thrive in a general school environment due to many different reasons such as involvement in CPS, past trauma, violent behaviors, learning disabilities and more. Kylie first worked in Hollywood where she was booked live music shows and secured brand deals for celebrities. After four years in the entertainment business and looking for deeper meaning, she obtained a job working with foster children and CASAs which ignited a fire in her.  She knew this was her purpose––working with children. Her next position was as a Behavior Interventionist, providing in-home ABA therapy to children with Autism. While working at that, she realized that to reach her professional goals she would need to go to graduate school, and two years later received her Master's in Social Work. During school, she interned at a NPS (non-public school) where she was able to connect with children from a variety of backgrounds. Her second year she spent interning as a Medical Social Worker in the cancer department at a hospital where she had the privilege of providing therapy to cancer patients, their families, friends and caregivers. It was very impactful and rewarding work. After graduate school, she immediately secured a job at a psychiatric facility where she worked with patients experiencing acute mental status that warranted an average 3-5 day stay;  most commonly had a desire to harm themselves, harm others, or were so severely disabled that they were unknowingly in grave danger. This was Kylie's last job before her current very fulfilling position as a School Therapist. Although she did a 180-degree career change, Kylie believes that all her early experiences have helped her in becoming the eclectic and authentic therapist she is today.

NOTE: This bonus episode is audio from a virtual event on 7/29, presented by the Black Abolitionist Network, Chicago Teachers Union, National Nurses United, Physicians for a National Health Program Illinois, Haymarket Books, and SEIU 73. COVID-19 has shone a spotlight on the intersection of racism and healthcare in this country. Chronic racist inequity has produced terrifying outcomes in terms of the disproportionate effect the virus is having on African-Americans and Latinx people. The protest movement that erupted after the murder of George Floyd sharpened a national conversation about racism in this country. Many have demanded that institutions which hurt people be defunded, and that this money be redirected towards healing communities. Join a conversation of labor and community activists who will be discussing work they and their organizations are doing as it relates to this topic. STACY DAVIS GATES is the Vice President of the CTU and the Executive Vice President of the IFT. This past fall, she helped to lead a 15-day strike and to negotiate an historic contract that provides for smaller class sizes, ensures a nurse and social worker in every Chicago public school, secures sanctuary protections for immigrant families, and supports students and families experiencing homelessness. DENISE MERCHERSON is a Medical Social Worker at John H. Stroger Hospital, and is an active member of SEIU Local 73. She has worked as a licensed, clinical social worker since 2017, and before that, worked in employment and labor law. LINDA RAE MURRAY, MD, MPH has been a voice for social justice and health as a basic human right for over 50 years. In the Cook County Health System she previously served as Chief Medical Officer for primary care, and is speaking as a member of Physicians for a National Health Program. DAMON WILLIAMS is a movement builder, organizer, educator and media maker. Damon is the co-founder of The #LetUsBreathe Collective and AirGo Media, and is speaking as a member of the Black Abolitionist Network. ELAINE MISTER will be moderating the event. She is a nurse case manager at UCMC, and was a leader in organizing her fellow nurses to become members of NNU.

We had a great time chatting with Kristen. She was been a huge She Percolates support and VIP {very important percolator} from the beginning! We are so grateful for all her support! As we do every week we jump right in and ask Kristen to tell us what success means to her.  She jokes that her answer sounds a bit like a bad fortune cookie. We promise it isn't! ;) "I shouldn't expect to have the whole world when I don't have the whole world to give." Maybe at first this does sound a bit like a fortune cookie gone bad, but Kristen does a great job of explaining what she means. Kristen also shares how that she really tries to prioritize her time and knows sometimes she needs to step back from things as to not spread her self too thin. She recently took a few months to focus on her new job and let her side hustle take a back seat for a while. "I only have so much to give and I would rather invest that energy in a part of my life where it makes the most impact...I can't have it. I can't have the whole world when I don't have the whole world to give." Kristen also talks a bit about the recent loss of her brother.  She shares how that affected her perspective on her family, her work and her life in general.  This helped her to ask herself what the end game was for her business.  She quickly realized it wasn't about making a ton of money because she loves her day job an has that to fall back on. We love the passion Kristen has for helping others, both in her day job and her personal business.
