Host Max Trescott discusses the fatal crash of a Falcon jet in Georgia with aviation expert Rob Mark. The NTSB final report revealed a series of factors contributing to the accident. These included misreading a NOTAM regarding the ILS glideslope, difficulty entering the initial approach fix into the navigation system, high and fast arrival at the final approach fix, unauthorized use of airbrakes. It's also possible that they didn't realize the ILS approach required flying a procedure turn. They were also flying a black hole approach in dark night conditions with minimal ground lights, but apparently weren't referencing the PAPI visual indicator. The captain, aged 73, had extensive flight experience but had undergone retraining due to unsatisfactory performance in certain areas. The first officer, aged 63, had a significant number of flight hours, but received only a Second in Command (SIC) type rating, because of performance issues. The podcast delves into the transcript of communications between the flight crew and Atlanta Center, highlighting confusion regarding NOTAMs and the approach procedure. The crew, flying a cargo route from El Paso to Thomson, Georgia, requested information on the ILS approach, but there was a misunderstanding regarding the status of the glideslope and localizer. The approach required a procedure turn, which the crew seemingly missed, leading to an unstable approach. There were delays in programming the initial approach fix (IAF) into the navigation system, possibly due to confusion over the fix's identification. The crew ultimately crossed the IAF at an altitude significantly higher than prescribed, leading to a steep descent to intercept the glideslope. Max created a software simulation of the final minutes of the flight that revealed a rapid descent rate and an unstable approach. Despite warnings from the captain about being high, attempts to correct the descent were ineffective, ultimately resulting in impact with trees just short of the runway. This was a classic black hole approach, in which there are few lights on the ground before the runway. A Boeing simulator study of a black hole approach showed that pilots consistently crash short of the runway, and so they must have either an electronic or visual glide slope. During this accident, the glide slope was out of service. If you're getting value from this show, please support the show via PayPal, Venmo, the Cash app, Zelle or Patreon. It's crazy to think that the holidays are right around the corner. It feels like it was only last week I was thankful to have made it through 2020 and ready to start a new year. Now I'm planning to spend the weekend wrestling Christmas decorations down from the attic. And I'm not saying that in my best “Grinch” voice! I'm saying it as someone who is genuinely a little freaked out by how fast time seems to keep moving. And in a way, I'm thankful the holidays are here because they give so many of us a chance to finally slow down, at least on the work-front…That's why I was so thankful to get to have a conversation with someone who specializes in making the most of downtime. In 2003, Institute co-founders Lois Holzman and the late Fred Newman had a paper published with the title “All Power to the Developing.” This phrase captures how vital it is for all people—no matter their age, circumstance, status, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation—to grow, develop and transform emotionally, socially and intellectually if we are to have a shot at creating something positive out of the intense crises we're all experiencing. We hope that this podcast series will show you that, far more than a slogan, “all power to the developing” is a loving activity, a pulsing heart in an all too cruel world ----more---- The East Side Institute is a hub for a diverse and emergent community of social activists, thought leaders, and practitioners who are reigniting our human abilities to imagine, create and perform beyond ourselves—to develop. Each episode will introduce you to another performance activist or play revolutionary from around the world. Jenna Riemersma is the Clinical Director of The Atlanta Center for Relational Healing. She is a teaching faculty member for the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). Jenna holds a Master's degree in Public Policy from Harvard University and a Masters’ Degree in Professional Counseling from Richmont Graduate University. Jenna is the recent author of Altogether You, which better explains IFS therapy and how every part of you is meant to be (and should not be shamed for it). TAKEAWAYS: [3:00] What is Jenna’s book about and why did she write it? [5:15] How do we best manage or process the different parts of ourselves? [7:15] We each have a core or a deep self within us. It is whole and it consists of the 8 C’s. However, our different parts (traumas) jump up and obstruct our access to our deep self. [10:55] Dr. Rob shares an example to better understand what Jenna means. [14:30] How do you bring healing to your different parts to become connected to your core self? [15:50] Why do we have such high relapse rates in addiction? [18:50] When we live in our core self, we instinctively embrace all parts. [21:45] Rage and sex addiction are not okay, but the part underneath it all is what we’re trying to help: the individual. [24:10] We all have parts at war within ourselves. For addicts, it might be they want to act out sexually and at the same time, they desperately want to be faithful to their partner. [28:00] IFS is applicable not for addiction, but for relationships and conflict. [33:15] How does MDMA help people with complex PTSD? RESOURCES: The Porn Panic: Is Porn a ‘Public Health Crisis’? Hello and welcome to twenty-second episode of Fanboy Nation’s Toon-In-Talk, your rendezvous for animation interviews. It’s also time for the second round of interviews for the Ladies of Animation Month, Whitney Grace’s yearly tribute to women who work in the animation industry and mission to inspire girls to pursue their animated ambitions. Puppetry has many things in common with animation, including principles that make inanimate characters come to life. Cheryl Henson is a proud promoter of the puppetry arts and preserving her father’s legacy for future generations. If you couldn’t tell by the last name, Cheryl Henson is Jim Henson’s daughter. Jim Henson not only revolutionized the world of modern puppetry with the Muppets, but he also was a singular entertainer and creative genius. Cheryl Henson chats with Whitney about the renovation at the Atlanta Center for Puppetry Arts with brand new exhibits dedicated to Jim Henson and puppetry from around the world. Show Notes Whitney recognized Cheryl Henson at DragonCon by her fabulous fashion sense. She wore an original outfit made for her by the designers of the Dark Crystal fashion line. Cheryl is the president of the Jim Henson Foundation. Cheryl was at DragonCon, because she was promoting the new expansion to the Atlanta Center for the Puppetry Arts. The Puppetry Center will house a new collection featuring puppets from the Henson Family’s personal archives. Jane and Jim Henson were at the Center of Puppetry Arts’s opening back in 1978 and it was founded by Vince Anthony. The Puppetry Center advocates the art of puppetry with educational programs, a museum, and encouraging anyone, anywhere to make their own puppets. The new Jim Henson collection will include over 450 new Muppet puppets, but only 75 will be on display at any one time. The puppets were housed in a storage facility in New Jersey and these were original, screen used Muppets! All of the Muppets in the Jim Henson collection were refurbished to make them museum ready. All of the foam rubber had to be removed, clean the fleece, stuff with cotton filling, and add a plastic skeleton. The Puppetry Center hired two fulltime staff members to refurbish the puppets. The collection will include the Seven Deadly Sins from The Muppets Sex and Violence When they opened the box containing the Muppet Gluttony it actually had real candy on it! They were removed, so it wouldn’t attract bugs. Cheryl shares her special Robin the Frog story! The new Puppetry Center will feature an exhibit modeled after the real Muppet workshop. Jim Henson revolutionized puppet design by making puppets specifically for TV and film. Cheryl explains that the Puppetry Center will feature all types of puppetry. Nearly all cultures around the world have some form of puppetry. Whitney and Cheryl discuss how puppetry is a very viable art and how Jim Henson used story in his work. The Jim Henson Company is very dedicated to exploring the entire world of the Dark Crystal. Whitney shares that she hangs out in the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth worlds when she has writer’s block. In her own personal opinion, Cheryl believes that her father put character before story. Cheryl explains the difference between the Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, Jim Henson’s Legacy, Disney’s The Muppets, Sesame Street, and Sesame Workshop. Whitney and Cheryl think its funny when they talk about the semantics involved with stop motion animation, live puppetry, and how they two intersect. To make someone laugh, Jim would blow a puppet up, have a puppet eaten, or throw penguins in the air. Cheryl declares that people need to care about each other.
This week we conclude our Stewardship series with a discussion on how to steward the constant barrage of information coming at us from all ends 24/7. Social media, technology, the 24 hour news cycle, etc. are not going anywhere. In and of themselves, they are not evil and can have very positive attributes. But, we all need to learn how to steward our access to media through proper boundaries. To help us navigate this increasingly difficult topic, we've asked our dear friend Dr. Angela Schaffner to join us again. Dr. Angela Schaffner is a licensed counseling psychologist and eating disorders specialist with over 12 years of experience at Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders. She earned her doctorate from Ball State University in Indiana and did her pre-doctoral internship at Emory University Counseling Center. She's also an adjunct professor in Mercer University’s Clinical Medical Psychology program. She has published articles in professional journals such as Eating Disorders: Journal of Treatment and Prevention, and presented at national conferences on topics related to eating disorder treatment, health, and faith. Angela discusses with us how to identify unhealthy patterns of media use and how we can put boundaries in place so we can learn how to not eliminate media usage but have a healthy relationship with technology and information. Hello my name is Kathy Pickel. I’m a Certified Clinical and Medical Hypnotherapist from the ACHT, (Atlanta Center for Hypnosis Training), I'm certified as a Consulting Hypnotist with the NGH, (National Guild of Hypnotists), I am certified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist with the ACHE () and I have a Bachelors Degree in Science from Georgia State University in Psychology. I'm also a certified NLP, (Neuro Linguistics Programming) Practitioner, and, generally, a student of life, an autodidact. I love all things having to do with creativity and especially creativity over the long haul. In school I studied psychology and anthropology, and still love learning. I especially love learning about human potential and flow state. In this episode, Kathy discusses: Limiting Beliefs The Subconscious Mind Relaxation/Direct Suggestion Overcoming Failure Getting into Flow State/The Zone Kathy also wants you to consider: Do you know what a fighter's mind is? It doesn't matter what your sport is. Once we figure out why you're standing on the edge of the mat, once we figure out why you're competing, you'll fight every moment and not give up until you win. It will become impossible for you to fail because you'll never quit. Your thoughts, your words, your actions will all become congruent. You'll have the heart of a champion and the mind of a fighter, you'll be on the offensive. "Toughness is in the soul and spirit, not in muscles." Alex Karras Increase Your Focus You know what it means, you understand the words, but do you know how to increase your focus? I'll put your hand on the knob, so you can crank it up. The light in a laser beam is not more than the light in a standard bulb, it's just focused. That's what you're going to need to know how to do to reach your peak performance, intently focus. Don't forget it's play, that's how you perform at your best. Serious competition is still play. You're serious when you train, but when you compete, you're playing. Don't forget that. Watch Michael Jordan laughing on the court. His focus is intent, but he's playing his sport. You work when you train, you play when you compete. When you compete you get to see what you've learned, you get to see how far you can push it, how far you can take it, you get to see how far you've come. You're intent, you're focused, you're playing.

Empowering Women http://learntruehealth.com/empowering-women/ Empowering Women To Achieve Optimal Health Empowering women is a significant advocacy in this modern day and age. Whether it be career women, female students or homemakers, women play a major role in society. However, because of our busy lives, we tend to neglect our health. Hence, I brought in today Dr. Tasneem “Taz” Bhatia who will explain why empowering women became the focus of her practice. Fortunate Accident Dr. Tasneem Bhatia developed her mission of empowering women by accident. She initially went to medical school, gradually took her residency, and eventually worked in pediatrics and at the emergency room. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia loved her job, but as time wore on, she was frequently getting sick from consuming too many sodas and junk food. Her family, later on, noticed that her hair loss was getting worse. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia developed acne problems as well. Consequently, she knew it was an internal thing and suffered a lot from aching joints as well. “I didn’t know that essentially, I needed to be gluten-free because the gluten was affecting my thyroid. And my thyroid was affecting my other hormones,” shares Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. “Hair loss comes in different forms, so it’s hard to generalize it. Usually, it is caused by nutritional issues and sometimes hormonal or stress-induced.” However, despite countless consultations with various doctors, nobody was able to figure out what was the root cause of those symptoms. Hence, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia decided to take matters into her own hands and took prescription drugs. It proved to be a wrong decision since there were numerous side effects like low blood pressure. In fact, the side effects got so bad that Dr. Tasneem Bhatia almost passed out. Not one to give up, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia looked for other options to healing her body. After intensive study and research, she then discovered Holistic Medicine and the benefits of proper nutrition. She likewise got interested in the principles of Chinese Medicine. Career Shift Dr. Tasneem Bhatia eventually realized she needed a formal education in a world opposite from Western medicine. Hence, she did a Fellowship in Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil, a famous doctor known as the “guru” of Alternative Medicine. Fortunately for her, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia’s husband was supportive of her career shift. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia recalls that it was practically a leap of faith. Her husband was just starting his dental practice at that time, and she got pregnant. They had a lot on their plate, but the couple persevered to build their respective practices. “Every single thing leads to the next. It is critical for us to own the responsibility to take care of ourselves and be able to have the empowered life that we’re all meant to have,” said Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. Super Woman RX The story behind how Dr. Tasneem Bhatia’s book, ‘Super Woman RX’ came to be is so endearing! Dr. Tasneem Bhatia relates that there were so many reasons for writing this book about empowering women. “I felt very passionate about empowering women to achieve what they want to achieve and be who they want to be. My daughter suggested naming the book Super Woman RX because she says everyone calls me Superwoman. That’s how the title was born,” Dr. Tasneem Bhatia said. Another reason for writing the book was after Dr. Tasneem Bhatia realized there were patterns that her patients were falling into—nutritional, hormonal, emotional, ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Hence, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia felt she was empowering women by helping them identify what their type is, use that information to learn how to eat, live, what best supplements are there for them, and how they should be exercising. “Trying to relate this concept of power types and the importance of finding your power type, as well as understanding what your power plan should be, is not simple,” said Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. “It was hard for me because I was initially educated in Western medicine but pulling it out of my head was way harder.” Power Types According to Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, there are five main power types—boss lady, savvy chick, gypsy girl, earth mama, nightingale. Consequently, empowering women is all about having an essence of individuality. Each woman is indeed created in a very distinct way. “We have a shift as women when we can start to identify patterns and trends. Only then can we collectively change ourselves,” Dr. Tasneem Bhatia said. Empowerment Tips First of all, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia recommends setting aside at least two to three hours each week for personal self-care. Women take on multiple roles. Hence, we need to make sure we have sufficient energy to keep us going. One way to do this is to take magnesium every night and use essential oils. “Be alone by doing meditation, yoga or pray to connect with yourself for five to ten minutes a day. Analyze your behavior and understand where the motivation comes from,” said Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. “We have a responsibility to change our DNA. We have a lot of stuff that we’re carrying around internally, but that DNA can change.” As far as nutrition is concerned, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia cautions on easing up on the sugar consumption and eat mushrooms like the turkey tail. She also advises taking supplements like vitamin D especially during wintertime. “One way to prevent cancer is by safeguarding against inflammation. Watch your hormones and metabolism. Furthermore, cut down out on consuming wheat, dairy and high meat which is rotten meat,” enumerates Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. She adds, “Cancer is ultimately not a genetic disease. It is an environmental disease, and until we understand that, we’re never going to solve the whole cancer equation because too many people are fixated on what their gene markers are,” said Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. Secret of Good Health Dr. Tasneem Bhatia attests that no matter how much you work on your health until you get the food component of your health right, everything counteracts. Consequently, food is everything and food matters. “You have to treat food like medicine. Understand the foods you need, where it’s coming from and how it is sourced,” advises Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. “It is also important for women to understand their hormone levels. Lastly, eat right, detoxify, and learn to manage stress, hormones, as well as inflammation.” Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, M.D. is a board-certified integrative medicine physician and wellness expert, specializing in women’s health, weight loss, nutrition and family wellness. She is the author of “What Doctors Eat,” “The 21 Day Belly Fix,” and the breakthrough “Super Woman RX.” She has been featured in numerous media outlets including The Today Show, Dr. Oz and Live with Kelly. Personal health challenges in her twenties combined with a broken health care system motivated Dr. Tasneem Bhatia to pursue an alternative definition of health and healthy living. Early in her medical practice, as a young resident, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia began searching for answers to her health issues. Studying various systems of medicine, she found a wealth of information not yet taught in conventional medical schools. A pioneer and trailblazer, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia opened her unique and innovative practice, CentreSpringMD (formerly the Atlanta Center of Holistic and Integrative Medicine) in 2009. The practices serve as integrative medical homes for the whole family – from pediatric care to adults, prevention, and advanced therapy for the disease. Expansion continues with multiple locations and providers and the launch of CentreSpringMD Spa and CentreSpringMD Pediatrics. Get Connected With Dr. Tasneem Bhatia!
