In this episode of The Sisterhood of Sweat, we sit down with conversation expert and storyteller Kalina Silverman, the creator of the global movement Make Big Talk and author of the new book Big Talk: How to Skip the Small Talk, Make Meaningful Connections, and Enrich Your Life. Kalina's journey started with something many people quietly experience—loneliness. While away at college, she realized she was surrounded by people yet still struggling to form meaningful friendships. Instead of accepting surface-level conversations, she began asking deeper questions that moved past small talk and opened the door to real connection. That experiment turned into a viral video series and eventually a global movement encouraging people to ask better questions and build deeper relationships. Today, Make Big Talk events and conversations are happening around the world, helping people connect in a more authentic and human way. Kalina's work also took on a powerful new dimension in 2025 when she partnered with GoFundMe to highlight survivors of devastating Los Angeles wildfires. Traveling to burned neighborhoods and damaged homes, she asked one simple but powerful question: What did you lose? The emotional conversations that followed introduced the world to survivors like Walt, Willie, and Dorothy. These raw, human stories spread across social media, generating millions of views and helping raise more than $2 million in donations for recovery efforts. The project earned Kalina a Shorty Impact Award for Emergency Relief storytelling. With the release of her new book Big Talk, Kalina is helping people learn how to move beyond surface-level conversations and create deeper connections in friendships, relationships, work, and everyday life. Her work has attracted the attention of some of the biggest names in media, including Maria Shriver, Anderson Cooper, and Katie Couric, who are all fans of her work and the powerful impact of meaningful conversation. In this conversation, we explore why small talk often leaves people feeling disconnected, how asking better questions can transform relationships, and why authentic storytelling can create real change in communities. What we discuss in this episode: • Why small talk often keeps people feeling isolated • How one question can unlock meaningful connection • The moment Kalina realized deeper conversations change lives • How Make Big Talk grew from a college idea into a global movement • The emotional wildfire survivor stories that helped raise millions in relief • Why meaningful conversations are more important than ever in a digital world • Practical ways to connect with anyone—even if you're shy or socially anxious Kalina's work reminds us that connection isn't about saying the perfect thing. It's about creating space for honesty, curiosity, and empathy. If you've ever struggled with awkward conversations, felt lonely in a crowd, or wished relationships felt deeper and more meaningful, this episode will completely change how you think about talking to people. What if one big question could change your life? Kalina Silverman became known around the world for walking up to strangers and skipping the small talk. Instead of “How's the weather?” she asks questions like: - What are you proud of? - What's been the darkest time of your life—and how did you get through it? - What do you want to do before you die? She calls it Big Talk, and she thinks everyone should be doing it. When we're young, we're encouraged to play, learn new things and express our creativity in endless ways. As we grow up, we find out that we can't carry that same energy into adulthood - that society places an expiry date on learning new things. If you're a grown up, it's time to be responsible, serious, predictable - there's no room for play and discovery. Not only is that no fun at all, it also robs us of two things that make life worthwhile - curiosity and creativity. Meeting life with an attitude of curiosity is one of the distinguishing characteristics of a successful life, but we're often taught to block ourselves off from that. The good news is, we can interrupt this pattern and bring unexpected curiosity into our daily lives. But first, we have to welcome creativity with both arms, and be okay with things being messy and unpredictable. How do we make room for expression and creativity? How do we break away from feeling like we're too old for play and discovery? In this episode, we talk about how to get back in touch with creativity, and why it leads to a more enriched life. Things You'll Learn In This Episode -Continuum of choice vs. limited options As a society, we have a tendency for polarities and limiting ourselves to either-or choices. How do we open up the possibility for so much more? -Open your fan, express your creativity Creativity is something we all have but we have to break out of our routines to find it. How do we find what makes life feel like a celebration, rather than a duty? -Why creativity is scary Many of us are uncomfortable with the messiness of creativity because it's the opposite of the perfect persona we created for love and approval. How do we embrace the messiness from a place of safety? Just being real honest here: I have a history of fighting for dying causes. Print magazines, 2-door sports coupes, 2-stroke jet skis, 3-pedal sports cars, 80's metal, etc. It's because I put my heart into (and defend) what moves me. And that's neat & all. But it can also leave me in frustration. So… I was on a boat all this past weekend, and boats have a way of giving you clarity. And the clarity I got was: Follow ‘the energy'. *get the free S3 Magazine app•

Grudges let negative events from your past ruin today's happiness. Hate and anger are emotional parasites that destroy your joy in life."The weak can never forgive, forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." GandhiThe negative emotions that come with holding on to a grudge create a stress response in your body, and holding on to stress can have devastating consequences (both physically and mentally). When you forgive someone, it doesn't condone their actions; it simply frees you from being their eternal victim.People who "play the victim" often communicate passive-aggressively because it's difficult for them to acknowledge their own faults. Holding grudges that can last for years because they are very unforgiving and self-righteous.Emotional intelligence is the cornerstone of mental toughness. Where do you do your best work and think your best thoughts? Probably not at your workplace. This episode begins with some expert advice on how to optimize your thinking and performance, so you think and work at your very best. Source: Edward Hallowell author of Driven to Distraction (https://amzn.to/3PQgv1u). You likely perform rituals every day of your life – even if you aren't aware of it. From shaking hands when you meet someone, to the rituals of religion to things you do to try and bring luck. Rituals are something humans seem to love and need to have. Why? What do they do for us? A lot, according to Michael Norton, a professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School. and author of The book The Ritual Effect (https://amzn.to/3U65Zpn). Listen as Michael explores the importance of rituals and what they do for us. Much of the science about health is confusing and often contradictory. But if you would like some really good, scientifically proven, straight forward and simple advice on how to get and stay healthy, listen as I speak with Jacob Sager Weinstein. He is a writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, and on HBO, and the BBC . Jacob is author of the book, Be Healthier Now: 100 Simple Ways to Become Instantly Healthier (https://amzn.to/4cZedXV). No medical jargon – just great ideas to be healthy that are surprisingly easy to do. You have heard the saying, revenge is sweet. What is so sweet about it? Listen as I explain why just the thought of getting revenge on someone feels good, even if actually doing it may not be so wise. https://theconversation.com/revenge-isnt-always-sweet-but-it-can-be-beautiful-73653 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Psychologists call it "role theory." For every role you have -- parent, coach, friend, coworker -- there is a source of purpose and meaning in your life. Older adults tend to lose roles as they see children move out, they retire, and they become less involved in their community. Volunteering not only provides a new role and a new purpose for older adults, but also research shows that volunteers report lower levels of stress and greater amounts of life satisfaction. Volunteers report less discomfort than non-volunteers in the population of people dealing with chronic pain or illness. But where can older adults find their new role and their new purpose in service? Enter the United Way. A long-standing pillar of service, the United Way vets every nonprofit organization to determine that funds will be well spent and volunteers will provide impactful service to those who are truly in need. In this episode, Jason Maddux of the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County discusses the wide array of service opportunities that are available.

Today I am very pleased to have Chip Fisher, CEO of Fisher Wallace Laboratories and head of Ursus Advisory, a peer to peer consultancy for young adults with inherited wealth. Chip is an inheritor himself, and also an accomplished entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is currently CEO of his third company, Fisher Wallace Laboratories which makes medical devices, but he has also branched out into private consulting to counsel inheritors based on his own experience. Chip's father was Avery Fisher, founder of Fisher Electronics which was a major midcentury high fidelity electronics firm and builder of the famous Fisher 400 for you audiophiles out there. He was also the former namesake of the famous Avery Fisher Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center, beloved by many generations of New Yorkers. When Chip was 21, he received a large inheritance, which was a joy, but also a great challenge, and that is the basis for our story today. I hope you enjoy my interview with Chip Fisher. Learn more: https://www.freedommedianetwork.com/freedom-circle In 2010, Chris' life took a new direction when he discovered the EMOTION CODE, a healing method developed by DR BRADLEY NELSON which frees the heart by releasing trapped emotional energy. After experiencing the benefits of the Emotion Code, Chris learned the method in order to help others and became a certified practitioner in 2010. Practicing the Emotion Code developed his intuition and led him to become a healing practitioner. He discovered his life's purpose to work with others and help them achieve their full potential for physical health, inner peace, a clear mind and an open heart. In early 2013 he received his certification in the BODY CODE, the full scope of Dr Nelson's work. The Body Code deals with correcting energetic imbalances in the body, eliminating underlying causes of disease. His healing work is transformational as well as unique, gentle and effective, recommended for those who are ready to look within and create lasting, beneficial change in their lives.

Todd Miller, best-selling author of ENRICH, says that these all provide the wrong types of financial security, promoting capital gains rather than cash flow. Capital gains, while nice in the short term, don't produce the long-term financial stability of a reliable cash flow. COVID has taught us that even our corporate paychecks are no longer a reliable source of income. Years ago, Todd decided to stop relying on his paycheck and engineered independent income streams that allowed him to quit his job and live the life he wanted. He stopped banking on situational gains (like a pay raise or fast bump in the markets) and rejected conventional retirement advice (like the 4% rule, which rests on a negative scarcity mindset) and now he's on a mission to help others flip the script for themselves. During the show we discuss: ● Why should professionals accelerate – even if they have a “good job” ● Why most people are miserable, and how to live the life you want ● The 3 places professionals get stuck in their search to be happy ● What time poverty is and how to not let it control your life ● Ways to future proof and build your financial security ● Why you must create a written financial plan now ● How to incorporate these ideas into our lives ● Challenges toward financial independence ● What financial security mean ● The key to enrich your life ● What financial fitness is Show resources:www.enrich101.com
