While on another social media platform, a young man made a post stating that he was Catholic and was greatly desiring to read the Bible because he had never read it and he wanted to know where to start. I told him to start with John Chapter 3.
It is extremely hard for a grieving person to have to give a report on how they're doing. But they do want you to invite them to talk about their grief and their loved one who died.We tend to approach people who have been through a loss with the question, “How are you?” It is simple enough and it certainly demonstrates caring. But many grieving people feel at a loss to come up with an adequate answer to the question. “Not so good,” might sound pathetic. “Good,” just isn't the truth. They sometimes feel as if the person asking will judge how they're doing this grief thing if they're honest about the ups and downs and waves of grief that sometimes overtake them. Much better is to ask an open-ended question such as, “What's your grief like these days?” It acknowledges that it makes sense they would be sad and allows them to talk about it. It means the world to a grieving person to hear from you on the anniversary of their loved one's death—no matter how long it has been since that person died. There is a day that comes around on the calendar every year for the person who has lost someone they love—the day of the accident, the day the machines were turned off, the day they got the dreaded phone call. As the day approaches on the calendar, there is a sense of dread—almost as if it is going to happen again and they can't do anything about it. They're trying to figure out what to do with the day to remember the person who died. Sometimes there's no energy for that and so they're simply trying to live through the day. For someone else to care enough to send a note, make a call, or ask them to lunch or dinner, or ask to accompany them to the grave is an incredible gift.Nancy Guthrie teaches the Bible at her home church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as well as at conferences around the country and internationally, including her Biblical Theology Workshop for Women. We experience loss differently when we know the full story. Like when you go the funeral of someone you know and love, rather than a stranger. We have a fuller understanding of what has been broken. And we have a deeper longing for resolution. Well in this last episode of the series, we're going to turn our attention to the part of the story that we're still longing for, which we get a glimpse of in Revelation—the book that comes at the very end of our Bibles.I'm so delighted to have Nancy Guthrie back. She was with us in our first episode of this series, where we talked about Eden's Fall. Nancy Guthrie is an author, speaker and Bible teacher. I highly recommend her podcast, Help Me Teach the Bible podcast at The Gospel Coalition. Welcome back to another series of Live Like It's True! Here in season 4 we're looking at the True Story of the Beginning. Our origin story.Knowing your origin story matters. Think about if you walk into a movie half way through, or open a book in the middle. You don't understand what's broken or missing. You can't understand what's been lost. It's like being slightly sad at the funeral of someone you never met, but secretly wishing the funeral would be over so you can get back to whatever you wanted to do with your day. Contrast that with grieving over a person you deeply loved; someone you knew from the beginning of their life until the end; someone you long to see again. We experience loss differently when we know the full story. McFadden is director of women's workshops for The Charles Simeon Trust, and Helm, wife of Simeon Trust executive director David Helm, is an instructor for the trust's women's workshops. We talked about their own development as Bible teachers and about the convictions every Bible teacher must hold. McFadden and Helm discuss how to use tools such as context, structure, traveling through the cross, and melodic line to get to the intended meaning of the biblical text.

Mommas, though I'm sure you're busy chasing toddlers and keeping up with laundry today, let's go back to high school for a little bit. Remember the days when our worries were school dances, pep rallies, and grades? In the midst of those days, we sat in English classes and learned about genres. In my previous article and podcast episode, “Understanding the Importance of Genre in the Old Testament,” we learn that genre matters, especially in studying Scripture. Knowing the genre of a book of the Bible enables us to interpret and apply it correctly. Today, let's focus on genres in the New Testament, which are typically a little more familiar to us. However, there are still helpful things to consider when studying each different genre. The New Testament consists of four different genres: Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) Acts Letters/Epistles (Romans, 1-2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, 1-2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1-2 Peter, 1-3 John, Jude) Revelation Momma Theologians Practical Takeaways Choose a New Testament book you've never studied or haven't studied recently. Study it using these considerations given about that genre. Pray before, during, and after your study, asking the Spirit to illuminate His Word to you and help you rightly apply it. Alternate between reading an Old Testament book and New Testament book. I heard this tip from Kelly Needham, and it's really helpful to continue reading books that can be more difficult, instead of getting “stuck” in them. Read the full essay here. Have you ever been downright confused when attempting to read your Bible? Have you ever questioned how you should even read certain parts of Scripture? If so, momma, you're not alone. As Christian parents, we long to keep our children pure. We set guards on our computers, we limit screen time and negative friendships, and we pray our kids will never run into another child, teen, or adult who turns their eyes toward evil things. But inwardly, we wonder: is it is only a matter of time? And many of us have crashed into that moment already. Jesus taught his disciples to be "wise as serpents, yet innocent as doves." (2) But what does that look like? As I've read through the Word with my children, we've stumbled upon several stories that have helped us begin these difficult conversations. Lesson One: Turn away from nakedness. Lesson Two: Look for the way of escape. Lesson Three: Watch, Pray, and Stick Together. Lesson Four: Keep a Daily Check-In. Read the full essay here. Wisdom begins with a right attitude toward God, one that leads us toward Him and keeps us close to Him. Whatever choices we face in the day about how to apply God's word and walk rightly before Him, if our decisions flow from fear, reverence, and love for God, we will walk in wisdom. We can cultivate this attitude many ways, such as time in His Word, fellowship with believers, and worshiping God in church and at home. Wisdom is rooted in faithful discipleship. Momma Theologians Prayerful Takeaways Read and reflect on 2 Chronicles 1. In what areas of life do you feel daunted or unsure of your ability to fulfill the responsibilities on your shoulders? Pray for wisdom in these areas. Meditate on the fear of the Lord and spend time contemplating His character in reverence and awe. One encouraging passage might be Nehemiah 9, in which the Israelites are praising God and confessing their sins. Read the full essay here. We are so thankful you found us here! "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). It was Joshua's declaration before the Israelites, and for many of us today, this verse has become our testimony as well. We read it at our weddings. We hang it on our walls. And as we do, we declare: "[we] have decided to follow Jesus," and we're taking our family with us. Almost from the time my husband and I were saved, we served in the church, especially among teens and college students. Eventually, we married; and together, we consecrated our marriage to the Lord. By his grace, we would serve him. Five years into our marriage, we rejoiced when I became pregnant with our first child. But soon, many began to question if we could still serve. Some even expressed dismay. They didn't say it, but the feeling implied was this: our lives would be just too busy to serve with children. Read the full essay here. While being tempted by the devil in the desert, Jesus says that we won't live only by bread, but of the words that come out of God's mouth (Mathew 4:4). He is telling us that we can't only feed our flesh, but that our spirit also needs food. And not any food, but God's Word. A balanced spiritual meal can be defined as meditating in the Bible, praying and worshiping. Read the full essay here. We are so thankful you found us here! Try being aware of your reactions and ask God to show you who you are being led by. 2) Practice obedience to God in the small and big things. Obedience is one of Jesus's characteristics (Philippians 2:8) and is a big step into growing spiritually. 3) Based on Philippians 4:8-9 exercise exchanging ‘bad' thoughts with good thoughts. 4) Fasting is a spiritual practice that increases our connection with God. How about taking one day this week to fast for some hours to become more aware of the Holy Spirit? Momma Theologians Prayerful Takeaways 1) Use Philippians 4:8-9 to pray over your life. Your prayer could be something like this: “Dear God, help me keep my mind and thoughts on You and on things that You like so that I will be able to experience more and more of Your peace. Amen” 2) Talk to God honestly about where you are in your spiritual journey and ask Him to lead you to where He wants you to be. 3) Pray that you will stop comparing yourself to other people, but that your eyes will be fixed on Jesus. _________ Momma Theologians Contributor Denise Assis Dos Santos Denise is a pastor, wife, and mother of two boys who wake up way too early every morning. It is easy to grow weary in this work, despairing of the day that our kids will say please without being reminded, wondering how they will ever make it in the world when their bedroom floors are less walkable than the path to Mordor, uncertain if anything we've ever said to them about truth and beauty and goodness will have any bearing on their lives, or if they will only ever talk about which new Mario Kart glider they want for the rest of their days. What feels like it might never end? Read Genesis 1-6 and consider God's patience with humanity. Imagine what it would be like to let your plans and hopes and dreams for your own children play out for hundreds or thousands of years before starting over. Pray and ask God to sustain you in your work. Ask his Spirit to remind you of his long-suffering with you as you approach the day-to-day work of mothering your own children. _______________ Momma Theologians Contributor Elizabeth Berget Elizabeth is a wife, mama to three, homeschooler, photographer, and writer who has always done her best thinking while writing—from her angsty teenage journal entries until now. When we believe God is a begrudging Father, we hide from him. When we believe he's frustrated at our repeated failure, we run away from him in fear instead of to him for forgiveness. When we believe we've gone too far this time, we cut ourselves off from the very power which helps us overcome sin. If, in my own imperfect motherhood, I respond with grace and mercy when I find my child buried in blankets and shame, how much more will our perfect Heavenly Father lavish us with his steadfast love and abundant mercy. Jesus reminded us, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11). Momma Theologians Practical/ Prayerful Takeaways Prayerful Takeaways Take some time to write down the areas of your life where you feel shame. Then turn the page and create a separate list of the promises of God that are yours in Christ. Hang these promises where you can see them and rehearse the truth when you feel ashamed. Be quick to confess your sin, both to God and to the person you have sinned against. Satan keeps us in our shame when he tempts us to believe we must hide our sin. Practical Takeaways One of the best ways I fight shame is through worship. Listen to songs such as “Before the Throne of God Above” (Sovereign Grace Worship) and “His Mercy is More” (Keith & Kristyn Getty)—which remind us we are free from sin and shame in Christ. Share your testimony with another person this week. Tell them how God has paid for your sin and covered your shame. We often can feel isolated in our shame, so when we proclaim the Good News in community, we encourage others to step out of their shame as well. ________________________________ Read the full essay here. Just as it was not good for man to be alone in the beginning, it is not good for Christians to be alone. This includes busy, tired mommas. Even when we struggle to pay attention to the sermon, we need fellowship and unity with Christ's body. Momma Theologians Prayerful Takeaways Praise God for the church, Christ's body, and for how He uses church to form us into His likeness. Confess any areas where you are struggling with church, whether a lack of enthusiasm or commitment, difficulty paying attention or participating fully, embodying a humble attitude, or anything else. Thank Him for His grace and forgiveness. Ask God to use church to refresh and restore you and to help you grow spiritually as He intends. Mommas, there's a better way. Unlike those storybooks, every single passage of the Bible weaves together to create one beautiful metanarrative (aka- Big Story). Every story, Psalm, prayer, epistle, and prophecy fall into the backdrop of this Big Story. Since it's all one Big Story, there's also just one main character - God. Understanding this provides great richness and depth to our Bible study. Momma Theologians Practical Takeaways Practice asking the above questions while studying a book of the Bible you've never studied/haven't studied in a while. Read The Jesus Storybook Bible or The Biggest Story with your kids. Both of these do a great job of pointing to Christ and teaching the Metanarrative. Study the Bible alongside another sister in Christ. Work together to see how a passage fits into this Big Story. Doing this will sharpen the both of you. Read the full essay here. In this episode of Help Me Teach the Bible, Nancy talked with Phillip Jensen at his Two Ways Ministries office in the heart of Sydney, Australia. Over a lifetime, Jensen's ministry has centered around the exposition of the Scriptures. He served as chaplain for the University of New South Wales, offered leadership to the Katoomba Christian Convention, founded Matthias Media, and most recently served as dean of St. Andrews Cathedral in Sydney. To teach 1 Timothy, Jensen suggests we begin not at the outset of the letter but at the center, where Paul's purpose for writing is stated clearly (1 Tim. 3:15) and should, therefore, inform our teaching throughout. Jensen challenges our preconceived understandings of “the mystery of godliness,” and provides a framework for understanding Paul's teaching in 1 Timothy 2 about the proper behavior of men and women in the church.Print and audio resources on 1 Timothy:1–2 Timothy and Titus: A 12-Week Study by Brian Tabb1–2 Timothy and Titus: To Guard the Deposit by Bryan ChapellExalting Jesus in 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus by David Platt and Daniel AkinSermons on 1 Timothy by Phillip JensenSermons on 1 Timothy by Dick LucasSermons on 1 Timothy by Alistair BeggBooks by Phillip Jensen:Guidance and the Voice of GodTwo Ways to Live pamphlet

In this episode, we respond to Theresa's question. She asks: "I've been trying to get my partner to have a mentor since our relationship began two years ago but he's yet to do so. I believe that having a mentor will lessen our fights and help him identify and work on some areas of his life. He says that he looks up to some great men of God but I'd rather he has mentors whom he has direct access to. What would you say about this?" EXCERPTS "It's good to have mentors you are able to have direct access to, but sometimes, it's just good to enjoy the resources they are able to give to you, whether or not you have direct access to them." — Anu Ola "I think the wisdom in mentorship, really, is tied to the wisdom in asking questions. . . Jesus is in every verse, passage, and chapter of the Bible. What does this mean? Should we be looking for a hidden reference to Christ in every single verse? What does it mean to see Christ in all of Scripture? We believe the whole Bible points to Jesus. In the Story of Scripture, He is the main character! Having a Christ-centered approach to Scripture helps us make sense of the OT and NT, but this takes practice! We talk about why this is crucial for Bible study, and how we can individually do this. For our sixth episode, we are honored to welcome Nancy Guthrie as our guest. Nancy is a speaker, Bible teacher, and acclaimed author of numerous books. She is a regular contributor to The Gospel Coalition and hosts their podcast, Help Me Teach the Bible. Nancy is passionate about women studying theology and the Bible and will be sharing more about her most recent book God Does His Best Work with Empty.
The one where I sit down with Nancy Guthrie, author of God Does His Best Work With Empty. Nancy Guthrie has been a spiritual mother to many of us. What a testimony her story is to God's faithfulness! I jumped at the chance to interview her about her new book God Does His Best Work With Empty. Nancy’s life experience has significantly affected her teaching. “I’ve had to dig into God’s Word in search of answers to hard questions about God and how he works, and I find that my readers or listeners usually have the same struggles and questions. And while I share openly the deep hurts in my life, I also like to laugh. I often have people who hear me teach say that I'm very real. That’s what I want to be." She and her husband, David, host weekend Respite Retreats for couples who have faced the death of a child. She speaks regularly at conferences nationally and internationally, and is a regular contributor to The Gospel Coalition including hosting the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast. Most recently, Nancy has been focused on her mission to infiltrate women’s Bible study in the local church with biblical theology. “I regularly have women who have worked their way through all five of my Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible Study series tell me that those studies helped them to see connections in the Bible they had never seen before. And that thrills me,” says Nancy. Nancy and her husband, David, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee where, according to Nancy, life is less about professional pursuits than about the ordinary aspects of being a wife, mother, friend, and follower of Jesus, with clothes to wash, e-mails to answer, and a friend to listen to. Here's what Nancy and I talked about: How God does his best work in our "emptiness" Who she wrote the book for Her personal story and how she's seen this message be true in her own life How to see our emptiness as an opportunity for God's work in your life Practical ways we can cultivate a sense of expectation and hopefulness in spite of trials The best piece of advice she's ever been given Give it a listen wherever you like to download your podcast! In this inaugural episode of Help Me Teach the Bible, I talked with John Piper, founder and teacher of Desiring God and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary, where he taught through the book of Philippians. He called this teaching a “dream come true.” Topics in this interview include:allowing those you teach to discover what the book is about;Paul's love expressed in this personal letter;connecting propositions in Paul's arguments; andthe better by far of being with Christ at death vs. the resurrection of the body.Recommended Audio ResourcesHans Bayer on context, outline, and thought flow in PhilippiansDick Lucas sermons on PhilippiansJohn Piper sermons on PhilippiansRecommended Print Resources:Philippians: A 12-Week Study by Ryan KellyPhilippians: The Fellowship of the Gospel by R. When I began recording interviews for Help Me Teach the Bible in the fall of 2014, I didn’t have a grand plan. At that point I wouldn't have said that I had the goal of recording an episode on every book of the Bible because that would have seemed like an overwhelming task and too much of a commitment. But I just kept doing interviews, and people kept finding the podcast and listening. I kept being stretched and informed and inspired by getting to have these conversations with a lot of people I admired who have helped me in my own teaching. And I have loved it.The podcast now has an episode or two on every book of the Bible as well as over 60 topical episodes on various aspects of getting better at teaching the Bible. For this final* episode I asked my husband to turn the tables and interview me about the podcast itself, and I asked listeners to send in questions they wanted me to answer. We talked about how the idea for the podcast came about, why and how I interviewed the people I did, how my own teaching ministry has developed, and what some of my favorite conversations have been.We will continue to re-release old episodes every couple of weeks. Because most podcast apps only offer a limited number of past episodes, we’ll start again from the beginning, posting the earliest episodes from the podcast, which means that the next episode will be an interview with John Piper on teaching the book of Philippians.Listeners who want to communicate with me about the podcast can send me a message using the contact page at nancyguthrie.com. Thank you for listening. I hope it has been a help and blessing to you.* I reserve the right to record a new episode here and there going forward when I’m with someone brilliant and I just have to talk to about something that would help Help Me Teach the Bible listeners.
Have you ever felt empty? Loneliness, disappointment, dissatisfaction with life, fear of an unknown future. We all feel some sense of emptiness on this side of eternity, and sometimes, our emptiness can cause us to feel despair or beyond God’s reach. Today, we are joined by Nancy Guthrie, and she reminds us that emptiness never stopped God from doing His glorious work. We can even see the theme of emptiness traced throughout the Bible! And what we see is this: God does His best work with empty. Sometimes I feel lonely. Of course, there’s a big difference between feeling lonely and being alone. I can be alone and not feel lonely at all. Conversely, some of my loneliest experiences have been when I was in a crowd of people. Perhaps loneliness is meant to serve as an invitation into something we should actually pursue at great cost—intimate fellowship with the God who made us and is with us. I heard a preacher say one time that we all have dark thoughts about God. My initial response was skepticism. As someone whose earliest memories are filled with Bible truths, I didn’t want to think that I have anything but esteem and love for God. But I’ve come to see that the preacher was right. We don’t instinctually expect the best of God. We’re a bit suspicious of him. We suspect he’s out to make us miserable instead of deeply and eternally happy. We can feel weary, unfulfilled, overwhelmed, or stressed because of the mundane things that fill up our days. We are tempted to go into auto-pilot. But how does the gospel inform the way we approach the mundane things of life like paying the bills, doing homework, cleaning the house, and changing diapers? Why understand the worth of Jesus helps us to understand the beauty of Jesus. Habakkuk had some significant questions for God. And God’s answers were hard to hear. But God told Habakkuk to write down what God was showing him because future generations would need to hear it. We need to hear it. Those we teach need to hear it.In this episode of Help Me Teach the Bible, David Helm, lead pastor of the Hyde Park congregation of Holy Trinity Church in Chicago and chairman of the board of the Charles Simeon Trust, walks listeners through the short three-chapter book of Habakkuk, helping us to trace its argument, feel its poetic pathos, and sing its song. We spend time on how to handle Habakkuk’s important statement “the righteous will live by faith.” We also talk about Habakkuk's faith-filled determination to trust God in the disaster that is about to come down on his people as God determines to use the Babylonians to deliver his judgment.Recommended Print Resources:Habakkuk: A Wrestler with God by Walter J. Nancy Guthrie and Courtney Doctor share their thoughts on why it is important for women to care about Biblical theology as it relates to their reading and understanding of God’s Word as a whole.Guthrie defines Biblical theology as a way of approaching and understanding the Bible as one cohesive story about what God is doing in the world through Christ. Guthrie suggests that Biblical theology differs from its companion, systematic theology, which gathers what the entire Bible says about a certain topic like sin or humanity. Guthrie says that as we look at the Bible’s themes, the themes we encounter actually develop throughout the Scriptures.Doctor agrees and highlights that Biblical theology is a progressive revelation in narrative form—we know more about God at the end of the story than we did in the beginning.Guthrie says her love of Biblical theology began when she started to hear preachers and teachers teach the grander narrative of the Bible, centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ. For Doctor, her love for Biblical theology started in her class called “Covenant Theology” at Covenant Seminary—a class that dedicated five professors to teach the Bible as one story. Doctor says that parts of the Bible started to make sense to her that were harder for her to understand before. She says it helped her love God more and love his Word more, too.Guthrie is passionate about helping other women pull together what they know about the Bible through an understanding of Biblical theology. In this episode, Doctor mentions Nancy Guthrie’s book called, Even Better Than Eden.To hear more from Guthrie, you can listen to her podcast, “Help Me Teach the Bible.” Giveaway! In the beginning of this episode, our team announced a special giveaway. A live interview by Nancy Guthrie
I am honored to have my friend and mentor, Nancy Guthrie, on the podcast today! Nancy is a writer, Bible teacher, conference speaker, a contributor for The Gospel Coalition, and host of the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast. Nancy and her husband, David, live in Nashville, Tennessee, with their son, Matt, living close by. They have two other children, a daughter, Hope, and a son, Gabriel, who were both born with a rare genetic disorder and both died within their first year of life. Having experienced the brokenness of this world in heartbreaking ways, Nancy has fought for joy by finding comfort and hope in God’s Word, trusting in His sovereignty, and helping others see the trustworthiness and beauty of Scripture, and the help that it provides. For many years, Nancy has served as a mentor and influential teacher in my life. Her books and studies have equipped and helped me as I have studied the Bible, and her ministry has greatly encouraged my walk with the Lord! After Jackson died, she embraced me as a friend and fellow grieving mom and has tenderly walked with me these past 5 years. It is such a blessing to learn from a friend who is a number of years ahead of me on this grief journey. As I have mentioned in previous episodes, the Guthries host weekend retreats for couples who have lost a child, and attending one of the those retreats shortly after Jackson died has been one of the most helpful things for us in grief. Nancy is a gracious friend and a wise teacher - I’m so grateful for her willingness to record this episode with me. Today you will hear Part 1 of our conversation.
On today’s Podcast we're talking about hope when you’re hurting like crazy. My guest is someone I look up to and admire. Nancy Guthrie is an internationally known bible teacher and author of a million books. She is one of the best bible teachers around and the host of Help Me Teach the Bible. Her story is going to blow your mind, but more importantly, her strength is going to inspire you.
On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Nancy Guthrie about the new heavens and the new earth! If you have ever wondered how the Bible’s story has always been headed towards glory and how that reality impacts our everyday, Nancy and I talk about that for the entire episode. Y’all, Nancy is one of my modern-day heroes. So you’ll know her a little better, she teaches the Bible through numerous Bible study books, at her home church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as well as at conferences around the country and internationally. She offers companionship and biblical insight to the grieving through Respite Retreats that she and her husband, David, host for couples who have faced the death of child through the GriefShare video series, and through books such as Holding on to Hope and Hearing Jesus Speak into Your Sorrow. Her newest book, Even Better Than Eden: Nine Ways the Bible’s Story Changes Everything About Your Story released last month! She is also the host of the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast at The Gospel Coalition, which, by the way, is my favorite. NANCY’S RESOURCES GK Beale Layne Tipton professor at Westminster J.V. The songs performed by Madelyn Hosch in this episode of Mormon Channel Studio are all about light. First, she sings an original song called “Sun Sunshine,” followed by a beautiful rendition of “Help Me Teach with Inspiration.”
Any mom who reads to her children knows that you wouldn't start a storybook right in the middle! If you skipped the first half, your kids would miss important aspects of the plot and the character development. Instead, you would start at the very beginning and view all of the parts as a whole. But for some reason, when it comes to the bible, we often toss that concept aside and go straight for the easier-to-understand New Testament books. In this episode, Emily and Laura make a case for the Old Testament, citing eight reasons why it really matters! Processing the entire bible in light of the cross is critical for mom (and her kiddos) to rightly understand God's epic redemption story.
