This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comMike Lacey and Jim Larkin launched Phoenix New Times in 1970. Working out of a closet in a women's clothing store, the paper covered stories most media at the time would not, including then-Arizona senator John McCain's involvement with the Charles Keating Savings & Loan scandal, McCain's wife Cindy forging subscriptions and stealing pills from a children's charity she'd founded, and the humanitarian horrors associated with Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio. “You get paid for castrations,” Lacey would tell the makers of HOLD FAST, an Audible podcast that covers New Times' salad days and what came later, including the fateful turn when people the paper had once gone after went after them, including the McCains, Arpaio, and then-senator Kamala Harris. As Sarah recently wrote for the Dallas Morning News:“Things don't turn out well for Lacey, or his more copacetic business partner Larkin, as they get dragged through two federal trials on charges of money laundering and (buried the lede) sex trafficking, thanks to the adult ads that were once the lifeblood of alt-weekly revenue and which the pair spun into the notorious Backpage.com, prompting the Justice Department to label them the biggest pimps in the history of the world. Whether these two men are free-speech champions, or smug bastards hoisted on their own petards, will be for the listener to decide.”HOLD FAST, named for the words Lacey tattooed across his knuckles, is created by former New Times writers Trevor Aaronson (also behind the podcasts “American ISIS” and “Alphabet Boys”), Sam Eifling, and Michael J. Mooney, who joins Nancy and Sarah - who spent a combined 25 years in the alt-weekly trenches - to talk about working for New Times during its heyday. “It was a meat grinder of employment, but also, the Shangri-La of journalism,” he says. “It was both things at once.”Also discussed:* Eclipse!* postrate not prostate* Post Malone does a chicken commercial* “We don't get the free speech warriors we want, we get the free speech warriors we deserve”* Erotic cake toppers, anyone?* Does Sarah love Mike Lacey? Does she hate Mike Lacey? Maybe both?* Who did — and who did not — get those $5000 checks* Reason magazine's Elizabeth Nolan Brown does heroic journalism* A gift from Wallace leads to the tiniest Viking burial? This episode of Smoke ‘Em, dealing with the threats to journalism and free speech, is, maybe not paradoxically for former alt-weekly scribes who covered the “freak beat” (Mooney), interviewed serial killers (Nancy), and walked around the office barefoot (Sarah), also one of its funniest. HOLD FAST is available on Audible.
Mike used to work at D Magazine. Now he doesn't. But he's got a new podcast that dropped April 11 on Audible. It is titled Hold Fast. Over nine episodes, Mike and two other journalists (Sam Eifling and Trevor Aaronson) chronicle the rise and fall of Backpage.com, the Dallas-born classified ad site that a federal prosecutor called "the world's largest sex trafficking operation." Mike spent three days interviewing Mike Lacey, the founder of the New Times chain of alt weeklies and the man the feds say ran a criminal operation with Backpage.com. In addition to all that, we talked about why Mike escaped Oak Cliff for the suburbs. Consider subscribing to D Magazine. Print makes the podcast work.
Chris kicks us off with a story of clogged drains, to which Ray counters with his worst cabin air filter encounter. Show friend Mike Mooney gets some air time this week talking about the Griffith automobile and Ray warns that one can never take anything for granted when working on an older car. A caller talks about fixing broken parts on the fly, raising some MacGyver stories, and we close with Chris' tale of three questionable recalls.
Author of "Dark Aeon" Joe Allen comes on to discuss the dangers of transhumanism. We had the pleasure of having a former 2 mile State Champion Mike Mooney join us for this episode. Mike is the head Cross Country coach at Quakertown High School in Pennsylvania and also is a track official. This guy was such a great guest to have as he has so much knowledge of how and why anyone should run. One his milestones that really caught us was his 4:57 mile at the age of 58. This is something that is just out of this world. See what else Mike has to talk about because he has some other great accomplishments that none of us could ever even come close to doing. Once again this was a great episode and a great learning experience for all. Thank you everyone for listening and we hope you enjoy!!
As we wrap up the first season of BCEN and Friends, Sean Stowers, Brigid Flood, Janie Schumaker, and Mark Eggers take the time to reflect back on this season's guest and what each episode of this season brought about for each of them. This Retrospective episode points out the greatest takeaways that everyone brought to the table as a new and exciting guest. First and foremost, BCEN and Friends is grateful to all of the special guests that have premiered this season. In order of appearance, we begin with Chris Clews. He set the stage with the first ever episode and he taught us all how different aspects of 80s pop culture can relate to today, even during the times of the COVID pandemic. As Brigid points out in this season's wrap up, teenagers today can relate to those in The Breakfast Club, but also everyone can relate the teenagers in the movie as we can't always choose who we are surrounded by; yet we can all work together as team and move forward, regardless of the situation. The next episode of BCEN and Friends features Kate Hixon. She is best known for her CRUSH model. Not only is she a woman, she also worked at NASA and is a highly regarded woman who has succeeded in her life, while she helps others through her model to succeed in their best way possible. After Kate, we have Alex Draper. Alex hails from the U.K. and initially wanted to become a teacher, failed, then decided he would try his hand at leadership. In the process, he created the CARE model. Through his failures and triumphs, he learned an essential lesson which is there is a difference between managing and true leadership. Anyone can manage, but it takes true talent, hard work, and perseverance to lead. In our fourth episode, we reflect on Jeff Patterson. Jeff promotes suicide awareness through Gaggle. Gaggle was once an email platform but has flipped the script entirely on finding mental health problems, risky behaviors, and self-harm by using a platform to monitor adolescent behavior. This life-changing platform detects patterns of possible self-destruction and allows the proper help to come to those in need which saves young lives. Sean Kavanagh is the next guest we will reflect on. Sean is a true gift of inspiration who had an encounter with a bicycling accident in which he wasn't certain if he would recover from. This accident became the point in time where his life drastically altered after recovery. His motto, “fall risk,” became prominent due to the bracelet he first saw after coming to. Essentially, a fall risk is when we fall in our lives, but we learn the most during this. Not to mention, we also work hard to recover. Without being a fall risk, we would not succeed. Curt Steinhorst, the best-selling author of the book, Can I have your attention?, inspires us to have better work habits. How can we stay focused in a constantly connected world? The biggest takeaway we can all learn from Curt is multitasking does not always mean being productive in the workplace. In fact, it's quite the opposite and proving to be a difficult task more each day. The guest of our seventh episode believes you can never become too educated. Ken Dion, who dropped out of school and got his G.E.D., altered his choice by going back into school to receive multiple Masters' degrees. He began as a nurse, started multiple companies, and never gave up on learning. He gives meaning to the phrase, “lifelong learner.” Following Ken, we were introduced to Jonny Boucher. Boucher founded Hope for the Day, a nonprofit organization which inspires us to talk about our mental health. He went on to open Sip of the Day, a coffee company which allows people to drink coffee and open conversations relating to mental health which empowers awareness. Not only does he inspire us to open a conversation about mental health, he encourages which helps everyone to have hope. Doug Harward is known for his company, Training Industry. It is the leading organization in training people across the spectrum to have professional training, no matter what their profession is. In addition to this, Doug is also a lifelong learner who believes we all want to be the best at what we do. Who doesn't? Then, things change, so as professions, we have to train and adapt. His company empowers this and allows us to stay up on techniques of all sorts. We end our first season of BCEN and Friends with Mike Mooney. Mike focuses on reputation and how we must maintain our reputation to continue our credentialing. As we all know, our reputation can prove to be essential in our professions and Mike's company promotes a Reputation Shift to keep us all on the straight and narrow path of a positive profession. Our personal brand is interwoven with our reputation and Mike teaches us to make that essential with ourselves. As we have come to the end of our season one of BCEN and Friends, we know that our next season will be even more so exciting because the bar has been set high and BCEN will not disappoint. Be tuned for our next season, as we will have even more exciting guests (yet to be announced). But, per Brigid's request, if anyone may know how to get Dr. Fauci on for next season, please feel free to pass along a good word. If you have a suggestion for an episode, please email us at BCEN@BCEN.org. Stay tuned for our next season. CLICK HERE for a transcript of this Episode

When we think of things like our reputation, would the name Mike Mooney come to your mind? If not, it will shortly after this read. Mike Mooney, a renowned professional who spent 25 years in motorsports decided he wanted to continue driving forward but in the way of helping people promote their own brand as well as their reputation. Mike who originally hails from New York, resides with his family in North Carolina where he launched the website, MikeMooney.com. What exactly does his brand do? He promotes your personal brand by giving you tips to shift your reputation. He even wrote a book entitled, Reputation Shift to prepare you for knowing your worth of your reputation. After all, in an ever-connected technology world, reputation can make or break your profession moving forward. He believes that you can blow open the doors of opportunity by building, rebuilding, organizing, and protecting your reputation. He worked for years in brand strategy from different well-known brands ranging from Walmart to Sprint and many others in between. He helped to ensure they were receiving a good return on their investments, but most importantly he protected their reputations. Just image how much he can protect an individual's reputation if he succeeded with a massive brand like Walmart. Mike believes that your personal brand is interwoven with your reputation. Not only that, social media can be very crucial in revealing whether or not your brand and reputation stand up the hype. In other words, anything that could potentially damage you in any way is best kept behind closed doors and off of your social media. Whether we realize it or not, our everyday activity is carefully looked at by potential employers. If we have anything that might sit uneasy with them, it could cost us our reputation which in turn affects our ability to gain or complete a job. Mike's number one question that he asks everyone is, “What is your reputation worth?” which receives one of three different answers – priceless, 10xs their salary, or “I don't associate my reputation with a dollar amount.” Mike loves the third answer but any answer causes someone to think about their worth and if they over or undervalue it. As we listen more to Mike, we realize how fragile and vulnerable our reputations can truly be and just how each small thing we post on any type of social media can affect our professional jobs, now and forever. Mike Mooney is truly a man who knows what is valued in our high-paced technology world that we currently reside in. He offers many great pieces of advice for our listeners. Friendship, Connection, Racism and How to Find Your Seat at The Table Right Now with Janise Graham “It's about coming together and supporting each other.” — Ursula Mentjes (05:30-05:31) During the previous podcast episode, we had Mike Mooney speak about how we can be agents of change and how our thoughts and beliefs impact every action we take — especially during turbulent times. This week's episode will be a powerful conversation with Janise Graham about her personal experience with racism and how each one of us can take our seat at the table. Part One of ‘Friendship, Connection, Racism and How to Find Your Seat at The Table Right Now with Janise Graham’ Janise Graham, President of National Association of Women Business Owners, ever since she began working in the financial services industry in 1995, her primary focus was on retirement and retirement planning. After seeing what can happen to a very successful business when there is no business succession plan in place, she was compelled to redirect her abilities to help those who are successful in their respective industries and who may need some help navigating the planning process. Her passion is to help as many business owners and executives understand the importance of and implement a business succession plan by using strategies and solutions that may help their business continue to thrive should they become disabled, retire or die. “COVID-19 allowed us all to slow down in a different way.” — Ursula Mentjes (36:02-36:07) This has been an intense couple of weeks on our planet as we have witnessed the devastating death of George Floyd, which has opened up powerful conversations about racism in our country and world. Racism is tough to talk about. But living it day in and day out is unimaginable and unacceptable. Still, here at Sales Coach Now, we're committed to continuing this conversation openly so we can learn together and become allies and agents of change for our clients, friends and colleagues of color. Part Two of ‘Friendship, Connection, Racism and How to Find Your Seat at The Table Right Now with Janise Graham’ George Floyd's death triggered America into a great awakening, followed by another shooting incident of a 26-year-old emergency medical technician Breonna Taylor who was fatally shot inside her home by a police officer. Consequently, these happenings ignited anti-brutality protests and a worldwide Black Lives Matter movement that's going to change the world forever. “Something that is bigger than the black community has to be changed.” — Janise Graham (42:11-42:15) Racism only magnifies that something bigger than the black community has to be changed. COVID-19 allowed us all to slow down in a different way. Everything stopped and created more space for self-assessment and awareness. But more importantly, what we need to bring into this world right now is more love. Let's be open to conversations about friendship, connection, and racism because every person is equally important. The Power of Mindset During Turbulent Times with Mike Mooney As a business leader, what's your biggest challenge right now as you're leading? People have been adhering to social distancing and virtual connections in exchange. The internet has long been there, but we're not using it as we are now, considering many workers have transitioned to working remotely. In this week's episode, we're going to talk about the power of mindset during turbulent times together with a special guest, Mike Mooney. Part One of ‘The Power of Mindset During Turbulent Times with Mike Mooney Mike Mooney has been going in circles for the last twenty-five years in the high-speed world of motorsports. Mike built a reputation for creating award-winning campaigns that drove brand athlete and sports property distinction, protection, and recovery. Mike represented many highly regarded brands such as Mercedes Benz, 3M, Tylenol, Walmart, Eli Lilly, and Fifth Third Bank with a passion for personal empowerment, self-development, and results. He left racing to share the lessons and experiences from high pressure, high-visibility, and high-performing careers. He speaks, coaches, and consults with individuals and leaders to help them proactively shift the way they value, manage, and build their brands and reputations in this hyperconnected world. His breakthrough book, Reputation Shift - Lessons from Pit Road to the Boardroom, is a roadmap with ready to use personal branding and reputation building strategies for people who want to create greater personal and professional opportunities. Mike lives in Huntersville, North Carolina, with his wife, three children, and two dogs. He's active in his community, volunteers with veterans' groups and the Boy Scouts of America. “I'm a big mental health advocate.” — Ursula Mentjes (24:44-24:45) There's no one-size-fits-all way to manage people's emotions right now because of isolation, depression, anxiety, and even things that aren't work-related. Sadly, all of us are being forced to shift in so many different ways in our lives. And the way we think can impact the results we produce at work. But as a business leader, you need to be authentic and supportive to help your team produce excellent results. If you're in the sales industry, if you think it's still all about making money during this pandemic, you're wrong. Today's currency is trust and relationships. Also, there's a difference now between opportunity and being opportunistic. Opportunity is when you're delivering value and you're focusing on helping people. Opportunistic is when you're out there just trying to peddle something and it's just transactional. There's nothing wrong with aiming for high profits, but it's best to focus on strengthening your relationship with your clients because they're all hurting too. We've seen it out of the Great Depression through the recession. People will remember who stood by them and who was there for them when the times were tough. Part Two of ‘The Power of Mindset During Turbulent Times with Mike Mooney’ Transactional mindset is all about the currency but a relational mindset is about trust. Relationships strengthened by trust goes a long way. It's time for you to start creating emotional souvenirs that will take your products and services to the next level, and make people remember you more. There's a difference between regular leadership and thought leadership. Regular leadership is getting things done while thought leadership is about determining the vision and how it can be accomplished in a way that gets people to think, move, and act differently. “Be an authentic and supportive leader.” — Ursula Mentjes (20:27-20:31) Right now, there's a tremendous opportunity to ignite light because we're all in the same storm, but we're in different boats. People are giving each other a little more grace in how they're showing up. Everyone's experiencing various shifts, whether it's personally, relationally, professionally, emotionally, or physically. You may not control everything that's happening around you, but you get to control your attitude, decisions, and behavior. Do you see this as an opportunity to step into a portal that can take you somewhere better if you take the time to invest your resources in yourselves? Or do you see yourself, your company, your team, as being in a hole? The choice comes down to perspective. More than ever, we need to be models of prosperity and thriving right now and showing the world what's possible because the more money we make, the more significant impact we can make. Stay consistent, deliberate, and intentional with your work so that you and your team can deliver value within your tribe. Daily improvement is going to make a much bigger difference. If you're a business leader, thank you again for everything you're doing to help create a strong community for small business owners out there.
