Jonathan Buford is the CEO and founder of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company. He grew up in Ohio and moved to Arizona in 2002, when he drove his rusted-out 1988 Chevy Nova out West to explore the vast Arizona landscapes. He launched his first business, a window cleaning company, out of his garage in 2006. In 2010, while backpacking through the Arizona wilderness, Jonathan was inspired to take his interest in craft brewing to the next level to start his own brewpub. He orchestrated a successful Kickstarter campaign to obtain the necessary capital and opened the Arizona Wilderness Brewpub in Gilbert, Arizona, in 2013 as the very first brewery in Gilbert. Starting with just nine employees, Arizona Wilderness found quick success, growing rapidly and securing rave reviews from the likes of Esquire Magazine, The Phoenix New Times, Phoenix Magazine, Draft, Beer Advocate, and Sunset. Arizona Wilderness was even named “The Best New Brewery in the World” in 2013 by Ratebeer.com. Today, Arizona Wilderness has more than 160 employees and operates the original Gilbert brewpub, a European-inspired beer garden in downtown Phoenix, and a warehouse production and barrel-aging facility. Arizona Wilderness continues to celebrate hand-crafted, artisanal beers that are inspired by the beautiful and diverse state of Arizona and is consistently rated the best brewery in Arizona and among the top 100 breweries worldwide (out of nearly 20,000 total breweries). Arizona Wilderness also receives regular acclaim for its food, including being recently named one of the top 100 restaurants in Phoenix by AZcentral.com. In addition to providing world-class food and drink, Jonathan and his business partner, Patrick Ware, use their passion for the wilderness to continually drive improvements in Arizona Wilderness' impact on its community. Jonathan and Patrick have driven initiatives to: (1) save huge amounts of water from the Verde River (more than 320 million gallons) by transitioning the brewery's base malt to Sinagua Malt (which replaces heavy water use crops such as corn and alfalfa with barley in the Verde River Valley); (2) drastically reduce landfill usage by utilizing recyclable and compostable materials wherever possible; and (3) support local farmers and vendors by consistently seeking out local partners for all menu items, including exclusively offering 100% Arizona grass-raised and finished beef at the beer garden. Jonathan is also pursuing a career in capturing Arizona landscape photography. He embarked on a project documenting all 90 Arizona Wilderness areas which will be published by Arizona Highways Magazine. He also frequently contributes to the magazine. In the future, Jonathan looks forward to continuing to grow Arizona Wilderness to ensure a tangible, long-term, positive effect on Arizona. ---------- Guiding Growth: Conversations with Community Leaders Join our hosts, Sarah Watts and Ben Kalkman, as we explore the human journey of leaders - their stories of humility, triumph, roadblocks, and lessons learned - as they reflect on how they became who they are today and share stories of inspiration and hope with listeners. It's not even October yet, but this episode feels tailor made for Halloween.  It's no secret that the BOP is deeply dysfunctional, dangerous, and dehumanizing.  And the stories of deprivation and death inside the walls of the BOP abound.   But lawyers are not telling these stories enough at sentencing, and as a result, Judges often have no idea of the real scope of punishment they are inflicting.  Therefore, it's important to share these true stories, and then act on them- in every case, and in every way you can.  IN THIS EPISODE:  Horror stories of death and deprivation in the BOP; The BOP's form letter parlor trick; The danger of going to an FMC; The danger of being in transit; How inmates are threatening suicide to get adequate medical treatment; Stories of hope – how lawyers and their experts are slowly but surely achieving results by telling the story of prison; A list of action items for telling the story of, and hopefully FIXING, the BOP.   LINKS:  OIG Compendium of BOP issues:  https://oig.justice.gov/news/compendium-federal-bureau-prisons-oversight-products Expert Prison Consultants (Maureen Baird & Jan Perdue):  https://expertprisonconsultants.com/ Walter Pavlo:  www.Prisonology.com 60 minutes piece with Collette Peters:  https://youtu.be/3l6wdVxr6nE?si=71Wy9-d9WoQkDh6B Furman Opinion (U.S. v. Working out of a closet in a women's clothing store, the paper covered stories most media at the time would not, including then-Arizona senator John McCain's involvement with the Charles Keating Savings & Loan scandal, McCain's wife Cindy forging subscriptions and stealing pills from a children's charity she'd founded, and the humanitarian horrors associated with Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio. “You get paid for castrations,” Lacey would tell the makers of HOLD FAST, an Audible podcast that covers New Times' salad days and what came later, including the fateful turn when people the paper had once gone after went after them, including the McCains, Arpaio, and then-senator Kamala Harris. As Sarah recently wrote for the Dallas Morning News:“Things don't turn out well for Lacey, or his more copacetic business partner Larkin, as they get dragged through two federal trials on charges of money laundering and (buried the lede) sex trafficking, thanks to the adult ads that were once the lifeblood of alt-weekly revenue and which the pair spun into the notorious Backpage.com, prompting the Justice Department to label them the biggest pimps in the history of the world. Whether these two men are free-speech champions, or smug bastards hoisted on their own petards, will be for the listener to decide.”HOLD FAST, named for the words Lacey tattooed across his knuckles, is created by former New Times writers Trevor Aaronson (also behind the podcasts “American ISIS” and “Alphabet Boys”), Sam Eifling, and Michael J. Mooney, who joins Nancy and Sarah - who spent a combined 25 years in the alt-weekly trenches - to talk about working for New Times during its heyday. “It was a meat grinder of employment, but also, the Shangri-La of journalism,” he says. “It was both things at once.”Also discussed:* Eclipse!* postrate not prostate* Post Malone does a chicken commercial* “We don't get the free speech warriors we want, we get the free speech warriors we deserve”* Erotic cake toppers, anyone?* Does Sarah love Mike Lacey? Does she hate Mike Lacey? Maybe both?* Who did — and who did not — get those $5000 checks* Reason magazine's Elizabeth Nolan Brown does heroic journalism* A gift from Wallace leads to the tiniest Viking burial? This episode of Smoke ‘Em, dealing with the threats to journalism and free speech, is, maybe not paradoxically for former alt-weekly scribes who covered the “freak beat” (Mooney), interviewed serial killers (Nancy), and walked around the office barefoot (Sarah), also one of its funniest. HOLD FAST is available on Audible.

On Tuesday January 23, 2024, one of the 100-plus reporters who was laid off via Webinar from the Los Angeles Times, stated it was “like a drive-by,” as it was clear that very few at this iconic 142-year-old newspaper had any idea, that in a matter of minutes, they were told that more than 20% of their staff was to be let go. And when events like this take place within a unionized newsroom, the workforce looks towards their guild leadership for help and support. Those tasks fell quickly on the shoulders of Matt Pearce, an 11-year veteran reporter at the Times and for past 4-years President of the Media Guild of the West, a chapter of the NewsGuild-CWA, representing over one-thousand journalists at the Los Angeles Times along with the Dallas Morning News, Arizona Republic, Southern California News Group, Austin American-Statesman, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Phoenix New Times and Desert Sun and other properties. It was only five years ago when the news team cheered when they were introduced to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the American transplant surgeon, billionaire, businessman and bio scientist who returned the paper to local ownership after 18 years, when he purchased for $500-million dollars, the Times, along with the San Diego Union-Tribune, from Chicago-based tronc. 2018 reporting directly after the deal was announced, stated that Shiong had “grand plans to restore the Times to greatness, stating: ‘The legacy of this paper is important to save, so what price is that worth?” Shiong announced the hiring of well-respected executive editor, former Wall Street Journal and Time Inc. Exec Norman Pearlstine along 80 new staffers, that including New York Times columnist Sewell Chan and former Slate editor in chief Julia Turner. It was later reported in The Wall Street Journal hat Shiong by investing strongly in news assets would easily achieve profitably by massively growing their digital subscriber base. In 2019 Shiong proclaimed: “I have made a decision to invest what it will take to make sure that the Los Angeles Times remains a viable business for at least another 100 years. When we get to five million ultimately, that will make that possible.” In July of 2023, the digital subscriber base was reported at slightly over 500-thousand, when the Times announced the launching of De Los, a new brand focused on identity and culture targeted to English-speaking Gen Z and millennial Latinos in the U.S. However, on January 23, 2023, it looks like this new venture will cease, since the union's negotiated “first in, first out” departure strategy reportedly resulted in that a large portion of those layoffs, included newly hired diverse staffers. In this episode of “E&P Reports,” we finally get an inside look at the newsroom of the LA Times, just a week after the surprising firing of over 20% of their unionized workforce from News Media West Guild president, Matt Pearce. We learn about how the firing process took place via Webinar, how the Union reacted to the unexpected downsizing, and what they are doing now in retaliation.

This week on Yes But Why, I had the pleasure of speaking with Arizona-based stand-up comedian, Zack Lyman. Zack Lyman has been performing stand-up comedy for over 13 years. In that time, he has been written about by such publications as Vulture Magazine, Phoenix New Times, and Comedy Hype Magazine. His live shows are unique and full of energy. Zack recently filmed his own soon-to-be-streaming comedy special, The Big Laugh. Recently Zack became a TikTok Partner, tasked with creating funny videos to teach people how to use TikTok. He also makes his own videos, tinkering with electronics and fixing arcade games via @thriftingwithzack. His podcast, an interview show which is aptly named “Zack Lyman Podcast” has been featured in the Top 80 on Apple Podcast charts. Zack was such a fun guest to talk to! He had great stories and he was so amiable. In our conversation, Zack told me how he went from barista to open mic host to stand-up comedian. He imparted his joke writing process and the ways his own style has changed over the years. Zack discussed how great it was to have his TikTok projects during the pandemic and how it helped him to feel creatively fulfilled even when there was no stage to tell jokes from. Zack is a great guy and is clearly working to lift up all the comedians around him. He has organized a tour of his fellow comics and got a lot of his friends out on the road. Zack also produced, The Big Laugh, a streaming comedy special he made to showcase his comedy community. Can you believe that Halloween is just around the corner?   I know some of you super-prepared parents out there are already getting costumes put together for your kiddos, and you may be wondering about cultural appropriation as you're looking through the shelves and online at all the costume options.   I get asked all the time about how to avoid cultural appropriation with Halloween costumes, and it's actually a topic I've covered in the past. In Season 3, Episode 2 of the First Name Basis Podcast — “Your Top 5 Cultural Appropriation Questions Answered” — I answered two questions about how to avoid cultural appropriation at Halloween.    Because this topic is sort of hidden in that episode, I decided to take pieces of that episode, add a bit more info, and make one episode — a one-stop shop for you to get all of your costume questions answered.   In this episode, you will learn about: Indigenous appropriation on Halloween and how these costumes put Indigenous women in danger. How you can avoid appropriation in Halloween costumes. When it is appropriate to wear cultural artifacts. Race Talk Roadmap   Our Race Talk Roadmap is the tool you need to begin conversations about race and racism with your children! We have a list of three tips for parents of older children and a list of three tips for parents of younger children. Visit firstnamebasis.org/racetalk to get the Race Talk Roadmap sent straight to your inbox.   Ally Elementary  Parents have been asking for a practical, interactive way to implement the anti-racist strategies that I lay out in the First Name Basis Podcast. So this October we are launching “Ally Elementary: Anti-Racist Education For Families."    During this five-week program parents will work together with their children to create a culture of anti-racism in their home, and I will be there to guide them every step of the way. We will use hands-on activities to teach our children about everything from the untold story of how race was created to how they can disrupt racism in their everyday lives. I am so excited to watch the families in our community make a meaningful transformation and improve their communities through anti-racist action. As he was about to turn 17, Remy Attig was keen to get away from his parents’ fracturing marriage, and ready for something to give his life purpose. The Master’s Commission program seemed like just the thing to set him up for a life of travel and spreading the word of God. Instead, it ran him ragged, instilled fear, built on his internalised homophobia, and set him up for unhealthy relationships and trust issues. In hindsight, he believes that the Master’s Commission was a cult. Guest: Remy Attig Full research sources listed on each episode page at www.ltaspod.com. Elizabeth met Amy Silverman in real life when she was asked to "engage in conversation" with her at my local independent bookstore. She knew of Amy at the time as a journalist who had recently published a memoir called My Heart Can't Even Believe It: A Story of Science, Love, and Down Syndrome. We parents of children with disabilities and special needs know one another because of the communities we have created, and Elizabeth had seen Amy's work online, had friends who knew her and was otherwise familiar with her, but it was such a joy and honor to finally meet and then talk writing, books and -- well -- parenting a kid with special needs. In today's podcast, we got to pick Amy's brain on her new projects and what's been happening with her and her family since the book was published. Amy is funny -- so funny, in fact, that we laughed throughout the whole episode, and I think you'll very much enjoy joining us! Amy is a freelance writer/editor/teacher in her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, a place she's still learning to love. She's married to Ray Stern, an editor at Phoenix New Times, the alternative newsweekly. They have two children, Annabelle and Sophie. When Sophie was born, the couple were surprised to learn that she had Down Syndrome. As Amy said, "Wait a second, I have never written about Down syndrome. I have never met a person with Down syndrome. I don't know anything about people with intellectual disabilities. [I] had to have a real come-to-Jesus with myself, which is not easy for a Jewish girl, and realize that I was the one who avoided people with Down syndrome in the checkout line at Safeway." In today's conversation, we spoke about the transitions our children face when their older siblings leave home for college, and that led to Amy telling us about her daughter Sophie's persistent questioning of her own place in the world.

Investors in Tempe Bar Hit with IRS Penalty

Veritas News Network - Truth is Trending

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 7, 2019 5:37

It was more bad news for some who invested in a Tempe bar owned by Julian Wright as the IRS has sent notifications that they owe money. According to one shareholder, the IRS sent notification that money is owed for the Canteen bar. “He’s costing his investors almost a quarter of a million dollars because he didn’t do something right,” the investor said. “We’re paying penalties and interest and the investors had nothing to do with it.” The shareholder said it makes no sense that those who invested in the Canteen are liable to the IRS. “According to him (Wright), he sold have the business to someone else and they took it over.  Then the other owner put in that they put in a million dollars in assets, when it was really only $300,000 in assets for depreciation. So why aren’t they paying it instead of us paying it.” For some investors, there was another potential loss as Wright abruptly closed the Gringo Star Street Bar on the popular Mill Avenue. The closure left shareholders to wonder if they will see any income from the sale, which Wright said was $300,000.  The Tempe bar  opened in 2013, offering arcade games, food, drinks, dancing and street art. The 6,500 square foot bar on the corner of 5th Street and Mill Avenue was once home to the Library Bar and Grill, another of Wright’s bar/restaurants. Gringo Star’s opening was highly anticipated from both a consumer and investor standpoint. Shareholders said when the bar first opened, it appeared to be a sound investment. They said they did see a return on the funds they entrusted with Wright. But after a couple years, they said things started going south. They no longer received dividends and Wright was difficult to reach. They allege when they asked questions about their investment or the financial health of the Gringo Star Street Bar, they were either ignored or not given an answer. When they did receive an answer, they allege it wasn’t a favorable one. In fact, two investors said Wright would answer with a “F**k you” if he didn’t like what was being asked of him. Veritas News was provided with a string of text messages allegedly between a shareholder and Wright that does show crude language. One investor said he has received no explanation for the money owed the IRS. He said he was told that Wright didn’t want to get into a pissing match with the new owner. “He’s supposed to be fiscally responsible to us,” the shareholder said. “We invest with him to make money.” Wright is the president of Fork & Dagger Restaurant Group. He has opened and closed bars in and around Tempe. In October, ABC15 reported Wright’s plans to open Equal Parts, a “rustic northern Italian” eatery in downtown Chandler had been scrapped for a different concept. The new concept will be called Las Palmas Cantina. Wright has been featured in several Phoenix New Times stories. He has also been featured in a promotional video for Tempe. Learning the IRS wants the investors to pay penalties and interest didn’t sit well for those who already anticipate a loss from Gringo Star. Gringo Star Street Bar’s Jan. through Oct. 2017 profit and loss statement indicates the establishment took a  negative 37 percent change in sales. The 2016 profit and loss statement also indicates a loss of revenue. Arizona Leisure’s website states, “Without a doubt, Tempe’s Mill Avenue District is the hottest entertainment center in Arizona. It is the hot spot in the Valley of the Sun Phoenix area with the highest concentration of restaurants, cafes, microbreweries, sports bars, unique shopping and nightlife than any other place in the Metro area.” The location of the bar and its proximity to the university leaves one investor baffled as to Gringo Star’s demise. “It’s a popular area and a college hangout,” the shareholder noted. “I thought it would be a good investment. Lots of foot traffic.” College students and foot traffic weren’t enough to keep Gringo Star out of the red, according to another shareholder. “It was mismanaged. They were giving out too many comps and not watching the bottom line.” What will happen next, the shareholders said they aren’t sure. Those interviewed said they hope to receive some money from the sale, however, noted they won’t be surprised if they don’t. “We probably won’t see a nickel. I’ll be surprised if we do,” said one investor. They are hoping after the bills are paid that there will be something left for the investors to receive. For those invested in the Canteen, the Gringo Star profits could pay the IRS.

With little fanfare and no explanation, a popular bar in Tempe, Arizona is closing. The Gringo Star Street Bar, located on the city’s famed Mill Avenue, opened in 2013 offering arcade games, food, drinks, dancing and street art. In a Jan. 19 Facebook post, a vague notice was given. “It’s been real and it’s been fun but now it’s time to go. We know many of you have had some of your wildest nights at our lovely bar and we are glad we were able to be part of it  It’s been a great ride! Peace out Thanks for the memories!” As of publication, there was no indication on the tavern’s website that it is closing. Patrons of the establishment were surprised by the announcement. Alex Kelly Ouch..  I have left a piece of me at the corner table by the DJ booth with its departure. The only place in the world to have a keg stacked with Don and Vodka..   Amanda Gordon Audra Nicole Hall Nicole Daignault nooooooo…..this just broke my heart and I don’t even live there anymore   Chris Hirata Dude I love this place! I can’t believe they closed it. So sad.   Kassie Visco Maggie Bryson we didn’t even get to say goodbye.   While the surprise came to Gringo Star patrons, it didn’t come as a surprise to investors, who claim owner Julian Wright’s mismanagement caused the demise of the popular nightspot.   “I was led to believe I’d get a great return on investment,” said one shareholder. “I invested in Modern Margarita and Gringo Star. I got a little bit of the money back on Gringo Star. I got zero on Modern Margarita. That was a one hundred percent loss, yet somehow Julian figured out a way to make money.”   The shareholder added that communication with Wright was almost non-existent. “I would have to nag and beg repeatedly. When I asked him to provide documents for some of the expenses, he totally refused and he literally sent me a text message that said, ‘F**k you.'”   Wright could not be reached for comment.   Less than two weeks ago, ABC15 reported Wright will be opening the Pedal Haus Brewery in downtown Phoenix, anticipated to open early this year.   Wright is listed as the president of Fork & Dagger Restaurant Group, noted as “an 11 year old multi-state restaurant development and management company” on Wright’s LinkedIn profile. News reports indicated Wright has opened and closed a number of restaurants as well as scraped plans to open a rustic northern Italian eatery in downtown Chandler.    In 2013, less than two weeks following the opening of Gringo Star, the Phoenix New Times reported on Wright’s plans to open other businesses on Tempe’s main drag.   The fate of the Gringo Star location is unknown. The Facebook page states it’s “permanently closed” and as of publication, no one representing Gringo Star has responded to questions from commenters.

Angela Harrolle talks with Carey Pena about the hit podcast, “The Call”, and how it is helping humanize what First Responders go through every single day. Almost 10 years ago, her husband, DPS Officer/Paramedic Bruce Harrolle, died while trying to rescue two lost and stranded hikers near Sedona. Today Angela continues to honor his memory by launching this podcast. “The Call” was recently honored by Phoenix New Times as one of the best podcasts. Angela is president of 100 Club of Az and host of “The Call”. Allie Nassar is the podcast producer and so much more. Both Angela and Allie are dedicated to bringing to life the deeply personal stories told by First Responders beyond “The Call”. Ten years ago, Angela's husband was at work on just another regular 24-hour shift as a DPS Officer. She was at home, getting her young children ready for bed, when her daughter said there was someone at their door. On this beautiful October day, Angela saw a DPS flight suit flanked by several smoky hats. She knew it couldn't be good. Her husband, Bruce Harrolle, had been struck by the helicopter rotor blade and fatally injured during the rescue of the two hikers. The unimaginable had happened. Angela never believed she would have to plan a funeral for her husband or tell her children that their daddy was not coming home. Known as a big story teller, Bruce had kept records of his stories, and Angela wanted to share these stories with the community. Stories people would want to hear. Allie's father is a retired Phoenix firefighter, and her husband is joining Arizona Fire and Medical. The 100 Club of AZ had helped put Allie through college. Upon graduation, she didn't know what she wanted to do next. She went back to 100 Club where she interned and met Angela, who offered her a job. A podcast “geek”, Allie was instrumental in bringing “the Call” to fruition which gave her an opportunity to help Angela bring the stories to life. “The Call” is a podcast whose mission is telling the stories of First Responders. Stories that never get shared. Be it a life altering situation for a community member, something inspirational they did, or even something scary, the stories get told from their own perspective. Angela and Allie have interviewed a Phoenix PD officer shot in line of duty and completed a series on the Miranda Rights featuring Carol Cooley, who was the arresting officer behind the Miranda case. Allie said that growing up her dad seemed invincible. He had stories he shared, but it was through the stories he told on “The Call” she learned what his career had been like. She heard, for the first time, about a roof that had collapsed while he was alone on the third floor of a club, fighting a dangerous fire, when he thought he was going to die. Through these insane stories she realized that her father and other First Responders aren't invincible. Both Angela and Allie knew that a podcast was a great way to humanize the work the First Responders do every day by telling their stories. As President of the 100 Club, Angela has concerns for the mental health of all First Responders. Her goal is that through storytelling, “The Call” podcast, and the work done by the 100 Club, support can be provided. She goes on to say, “We are the men and women that stand behind the men and women that wear the badge.” Angela explains that First Responders cannot have a bad day when they show up for a call. Instead, they continually carry the weight of their experiences on their shoulders. And it can accumulate Angela is proud of the 100 Club and the outlets they provide for both the physical injuries you can see and those injuries that are not seen, like PTSD. The 100 Club offers great resources like Bulletproof.org, a 24-7 support line dedicated to public safety officers with specially trained call takers. DPS officers, especially law enforcement, are often sent out on their own, with no one to talk to. They go from call to call with no time to decompress. Angela goes on to say that not only is it important for them to decompress, but it is important for the family to have support as well. The goal is to have online health and wellness tools available to them all. One story Angela shares is about her husband's close friend and colleague, who was asked to fly up to the rescue site after her husband's death and put his friend's body in the body bag. Afterwards, he kept checking on Angela to see how she was doing. This officer, an honor guard, would let Angela know he was okay and that everything was good. Yet just two years later, he took his own life. Sometimes everything they have to do and see is too much. First Responders are human. Angela acknowledges the community. People want to help. So, she reminds us to just say “Thank You”. The post Beyond the Call: First Responders Share Their Stories appeared first on Inspired Media 360 TV - Inform | Inspire | Engage.

The E.Jones Show Feat Sharonda Podcast

CeCe PenistonCeCe Peniston (/siːˈsiː ˈpɛnistən/; born Cecilia Veronica Peniston; September 6, 1969)[1] is an American recording artist and former beauty queen.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] In the early 1990s, she was one of the most successful dance club artists in the history of the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play, scoring five number one hits in the chart within three years.[9][10] Her signature song "Finally" (#5 in the Hot 100[10] and #2 in UK Top 75[11]) became one of the biggest dance singles, selling three million copies worldwide.[12]Peniston has performed at private engagements for Aretha Franklin's private birthday party in Detroit, Michigan, Pope John Paul II in Rome at the Vatican (as a member of the gospel band Sisters of Glory) and the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, during both of his inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C.[13] She was the first foreign female entertainer to perform in post-apartheid South Africa.[13][14]On February 4, 2011, Peniston signed a record deal with West Swagg Music Group/Bungalo Records, with full distribution through Universal Music Group Distribution, and announced release of a new solo album 15 years after her last studio set (I'm Movin' On from 1996 on A&M Records).[15]By the end of the year, however, only three digital singles had been issued including a new song called "Stoopid!",[16] and two cover versions of her prior hits, "Keep On Walkin'" and "Finally".[17][18]In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed her among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time (as the 52nd) 1969–90: Early life[edit]Peniston was born in Dayton, Ohio, in United States, but spent the majority of her formative years in Phoenix, where she was raised since she was nine. As a daughter of a former military father, Ronald Peniston (born 1934, married Barbara Anne in 1960), she started singing at church[20] and doing plays and musicals such as H.M.S. Pinafore in the 6th grade. She participated in local karaoke contests and singing talent shows, while taking piano lessons.[4][8]She attended Trevor G. Browne High School, class of 1987, in Phoenix,[21] and landed a part in a local theater group's production of Bubblin' Brown Sugar[3][4] (playing the young Sweet Georgia Brown[22]). After earning her diploma, she continued to study liberal arts at the Phoenix College, where she got involved in athletics, and entered beauty pageants. She was crowned Miss Black Arizona in 1989[3][4][5][6][7][8][12] and Miss Galaxy in 1990.[3][7]Peniston began writing pop lyrics already at school. The words of her international hit "Finally" were purportedly penned during a chemistry class, while thinking about dating in college. Her music career began in January 1991, when Felipe "DJ Wax Dawg" Delgado, her friend and a record producer based also in Phoenix, asked Peniston to record back-up vocals for Tonya Davis, a black female rapper known as Overweight Pooch after her childhood nickname.[3][4][24]Davis, headed in a direction of a "new" Monie Love, was searching for a singer to add vocals to the title track of her album Female Preacher, which was to be released on A&M Records that summer. At a talent show she met a woman named Malaika LeRae Sallard, but when it came time to get Sallard into the studio, the rapper found she'd lost her future label-mate's number. When Delgado, who'd preferred Peniston instead, brought his favorite in to do background parts, the response from everyone was immediate, but did not move the Pooch to invite Peniston back for more vocals – unless she was successful in locating Sallard.[24]Later, as it became clear that Peniston was leaping from the Overweight Pooch's album to the top of the charts, rumor had it the Pooch was stewing over Peniston's using Female Preacher as her springboard. Tonya Davis, pregnant at the time of recording her album, swore she harbored no jealousy towards Peniston. "There's no jealousy, because she has a voice. I gave her the chance, but I didn't give her a voice,"[24] the rapper insisted for Phoenix New Times in July 1992, and Peniston, interviewed by the same newspaper in the meantime, reacted by her own words. "I feel like anything's possible and I know one thing. If I wasn't at this spot, I still would be achieving to get to this spot."[24] Ironically enough, Sallard eventually threw in a few back-up vocals for Peniston on a song with a significant title, "You Win, I Win, We Lose", while Peniston, who in return played an agent to get a record deal also for Malaika (whose album Sugar Time scored in 1993 two Top 5 hits on the US Dance chart, including the No. 1 single "Gotta Know (Your Name)") mentioned the Pooch's name on her own debut album in addition, leaving Davis a note saying "thanks for letting me be a part of Female Preacher".[25]Besides the Peniston's vocal performance on three tracks in total, of which "I Like It" was released as a single with a moderate success (at #16 in US Dance[26] and #58 in UK Top 75[27] the following January), she was eventually given also a credit for co-writing two of those, "Kickin' Da Blues" and the title's, "Female Preacher". But the Overweight Pooch's album flopped on the market, and A&M was the first major label for Delgado himself, who was facing contractual disputes with the record company. After Manny Lehman (a DJ, then A&M Art Director and one of the executive producers of Female Preacher) also noticed the powerful voice of a still back-up vocalist, he offered Delgado a second chance, and commissioned him to produce a track for Peniston herself as a solo artist.[4] Not looking to lose his major deal connections, Delgado called on a hometown friend and music producer too, Rodney K. Jackson (they two met through mutual friends in Arizona), who was brought then to A&M family to help co-produce the Peniston's single, which was soon to be recognized as “Finally”.[28]Despite an initial label's resistance to sign Peniston to more than a one-off single deal, the “Finally” session resulted in recording her own debut album after the final approval of A&M's Vice President, Mark Mazzetti.[29]1991–92: Finally[edit]Peniston with Felipe Delgado at Chaton Studios in Phoenix, Arizona, putting final touches to her debut albumI was sitting in a Chicago pizza parlor in October and I heard over the radio 'Finally by CeCe Peniston'. I just started looking around going 'That's me! That's me!"[5]—Peniston recalled for EW magazine in 1992. (Almost 20 years later, when asked by Mega 104.3, she denied saying it, during her interview broadcast live on April 5, 2011.)[30]Peniston was 21 years old when her debut single "Finally" was released. The song burst on to the US club scene in the fall of 1991, where it became an instant dance anthem peaking, in October,[10] at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play for two weeks, while achieving a respectful starting position (at No. 29)[11] overseas. After her first song climbed the international charts, Peniston was headed into the studio to record a full-length album. However, she "had two months to pull the whole album together" and "didn't realize the impact the record was having until it reached the top five". She also described how difficult it was to begin her career at such an extreme pace, but [4] the result was a solidly produced ten track collection titled Finally, issued in January of the following year. Both the single and album entered the US Hot 100, as well as the UK Top 75 chart (at No. 5[10] and No. 2 for single,[11] respectively at No. 70[10] and at No. 10 for album release[11]), and ultimately earned Peniston a gold or silver certification in both countries. By the end of 1992 her debut (in Europe re-released in 1997 with a bonus remix "Finally '97") sold over 540,000 in United States.[31]"We Got a Love Thang", the second single (co-written by Chantay Savage), with a video clip in heavy rotation on TV music channels, went to No. 1 in the US Dance chart in February (No. 20 in the Hot 100),[10] and in England (where "Finally" skipped to No. 2 eventually[11]) "We Got a Love Thang" peaked at No. 6.[11] Might the only controversial question regarding the title remain who had provided background vocals on the record? While on her album Finally Darnnel Rush was credited, on its single release, the name of Kym Sims (who was a co-writer of "Keep On Walkin'") appeared as one of back-up vocalists actually.[32]With another hit record on the charts, Peniston began a year of touring clubs and small theaters in the USA in support of her album. Her travels started with a series of shows in the Philippines, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy, and after her return to the USA, Peniston continued with such R&B acts as Joe Public, the Cover Girls, R. Kelly and Levert.[4] While on tour, "Keep On Walkin'", a hip hop swinging composition, joined the list of Peniston's three consecutively running hits, bringing Peniston in June her third No. 1 in the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart (No. 15 in the Hot 100),[9] and another Top 10 hit in UK.[11] Later in August, that was also her highest outing in the US R&B chart, scoring at No. 3.On October 17, Billboard magazine announced that Peniston was the leading nominee in the Billboard Music Awards, being nominated in four categories: three times in the dance category with "Finally" (Best New Artist, Best Female Artist and Best Director), and one in the R&B/Rap category (Best Female Artist) for her urban hit "Keep On Walkin'".[33] Ultimately the song won two awards, and three of her singles released in 1992 were listed also within the Top 100 songs of the Billboard Year-End chart (at No. 20 with "Finally", at No. 61 with "Keep On Walkin'", and at No. 97 with "We Got a Love Thang"[34]). In the UK, Peniston was listed as the 20th of Top Selling Singles Artists in 1992.Additional songs taken from album Finally achieved the Top 40 status at least in the hip hop/R&B field. The grieving lyrics of her ballad "Inside That I Cried", co-written by Peniston's then-husband, Malik Byrd (who appeared also in its video), and produced in conjunction with Anita Baker's cohort, Steve Lindsey, peaked at No. 10 in the US R&B (No. 94 in the Hot 100[10] and No. 42 in UK Top 75[11]). The fifth single, a midtempo, "Crazy Love", climbed to No. 31 (No. 97 in the Hot 100[10] and No. 44 in UK[11]).By the end of the year, Peniston received several awards for her achievements in the music industry for 1992. Among them, one Billboard Music Award (as Best New Artist – Dance, the second went to the video director Claude Borenzweig), three ASCAP Awards (for Song of The Year, Most Performed Song of The Year, and Pop Songwriter of The Year), another three awards (as Best New Dance Artist, Best Dance Solo Artist, and for Best 12" Dance Record) at the Annual Winter Music Conference, and the BMI Urban Award of Achievement.[13] The album itself was nominated on a Soul Train Music Award '93 in the Best R&B/Soul Album – Female category.[35]1993–95: Thought 'Ya KnewWithin a year, Peniston was back in the studios to record her sophomore release, and the particular challenge for the vocalist was to avoid getting pigeonholed into the dance genre. For that reason, several ballads were arranged to appear on the final set (in the front with "Forever In My Heart", produced by Brian McKnight), of which, however, none was chosen for a single release. This time around, Peniston co-authored three of thirteen tracks ("Whatever It Is", "Give What I'm Givin" and "Maybe It's The Way",[4] a ballad about her father[8]), and along with Manny Lehman and Damon Jones, who later became Peniston's manager, she was also credited as an executive producer of her scheduled album release, Thought 'Ya Knew. Apart from others, also fellow Ohio-born singer Norma Jean Wright joined the session.[36]After a certain level of hesitation over the first single, "I'm in the Mood" (originally produced by Soulshock and Karlin) was picked to be the final leader—though as support for "Searchin'", which would be separately delivered on vinyl only to DJs. "I'm in the Mood" did well by itself, and with a video accompanied by a hip-hop remix from M-Doc & Jere M.C. (better known as In Da Soul) the title was on singles reproduced by David Morales for the dance floor. The song spawned Peniston's fourth No. 1[10] (dethroning from the top of the US Dance chart Aretha Franklin's "A Deeper Love") and peaked at No. 16 in UK[11] (#32 in the Hot 100[10]).On January 25, 1994, the album Thought 'Ya Knew, which was to represent Peniston's musical zenith at that time, arrived on all available formats, including digital compact cassettes. However, as the record promptly entered the music charts, it was soon to be evident Thought 'Ya Knew was not enjoying the high-profile success of her previous set Finally. After its progress had stalled in the Billboard 200 at No. 96,[10] Thought 'Ya Knewclimbed to No. 31 in the UK,[11] but the album charted for only two weeks in the UK.Not certain about the second single either, "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" was accepted to become the British follow-up. But the track, remixed by Eddie Gordon's West End production team, had no supporting music video, and after peaking at No. 36 in April in the United Kingdom,[11] an alternative title ("I'm Not Over You") was chosen for the US market as the second cut from the Thought 'Ya Knew album."I'm Not Over You" (written by Steve Hurley, Jamie Principle, and M-Doc) might have missed the highest position of the US Dance chart, but only by about one point (at No. 2),[10] and the single was later classified in the overall Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart as the ninth most successful track of 1994 (leaving "I'm in the Mood" far behind, at #44). However, although the song had sealed the Top 10 of the US R&B chart, it did not succeed in the Hot 100 that much, failing to crack Top 40 (No. 41).[37] Considering that expectations of A&M Records company must have been bigger than a club play sale of Peniston's singles, "I'm Not Over You" was released in UK only on B-side of the "Hit by Love" release."Hit by Love" was to be the third song taken from the album. As with her previous releases, the song (with additional remixes by David Morales) became Peniston's next US Dance hit in a line of her No. 1s, but while on the top of the chart "Hit by Love" stayed for another week, the single stuck at No. 33 in the UK Top 75,[11] as well as on the bottom positions of the American Hot 100 chart (at No. 90).[10]Along with "Hit by Love" in the charts, A&M issued a rare compilation, Remix Collection, in Japan with nine alternate versions of her songs previously available only on vinyl, which tracked Peniston's music career since the "Keep On Walkin'" release. A similar remix collection, however, consisting of only two singles ("Finally" and "We Got a Love Thang"), was earlier issued in Japan as an EP under the title Finally / We Got a Love Thang: Remix Collection featuring overall eight remixed versions. At the end of the year Peniston was named the No. 1 Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Artist,[37] summarizing all her songs released in 1994 ("I'm Not Over You" #9, "Hit by Love" #24, and I'm in the Mood" #44). While A&M was listed as the sixth best dance label in the Billboard Year-End chart, Peniston was also rated as the 5th Top R&B Singles Female Artist (behind Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, Aaliyah and Mariah Carey).[38]In addition, a remix of "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" was popularized on the original motion picture soundtrack of the Prêt-à-Porter (Ready To Wear) film, and released in the U.S. after a one-year delay, scoring No. 4 in the US Dance charts in March 1995. "Keep Givin' Me Your Love" became Peniston's first song not to enter the Hot 100 chart (No. 101),[10] possibly as the result of appearing as a B-side on her previous release, and sharing its sales with the single "Hit by Love". Skin-n-Bones strips rock to its barest essence. The Scranton-based quintet built a hardcore following around its self-described brand of “dirty rock and roll.” The band just released its newest album of, “Listen Up.” For “Listen Up,” Skin-n-Bones worked with well known producer and musician Bret Alexander, formerly of the Badlees. Made up of veteran local musicians — Rob Rosencrans on lead vocals, Donny Engle on guitar, Todd Costantino on bass guitar, Paul Davies on drums and John Roman on guitar — Skin-n-Bones formed in 2009. Inspired by legendary acts like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses, the band made a commitment to churning out “live, in-your-face rock and roll,”The band released its debut EP in 2010 while slowly building a fanbase. They helped their cause by landing opening slots for several national touring acts, including Charm City Devils, the Romantics, Jackyl, Queensryche, Tantric, Great White, Pop Evil, and Trapt. Like those bands, Skin-n-Bones’ set lists consist entirely of original songs — no covers. Meanwhile, the band is now in the process of booking a series of gigs in the coming months to promote “Listen Up.” “We’re just trying to get on the road and push it. I think when you hear it, you’ll like it, “We’re just trying to get it out there. Anyway, we can. We just want to be heard.” We also got the chance to talk to Chris Langan of Behind the Beat with Chris Langan. a professional drummer and educator, from Northeastern Pennsylvania, with over 30 years experience. He offers Private, and Skype drum lessons for Beginners through Advanced players. He also offers Online and Studio drum tracks for an artists song or album. Please email him at chrislangan1981@gmail.com for pricing. Last, but not least Murkocet an American heavy metal band based out of Phoenix, Arizona. Formed in 2013, the band’s debut album ‘Digging Mercy’s Grave’ was released on January 14, 2017. The album consists of eleven tracks, two of which have been aired on Phoenix’s 98KUPD “Into The Pit” and another that was chosen by indie horror film director, Bob Clark of Reel Bloody Films to be the title track of his movie, ‘Strip Club Massacre’. Since their debut, the band has ventured out on multiple North American tours rocking stages in New Mexico, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, throughout Southern California and The Viper Room in LA. They have shared the stage with headlining acts such as Attila, Exodus, Crowbar, The Browning and more. With a rapidly growing fanbase, the metal quartet landed themselves a number four spot in Phoenix New Times’ article for “13 Best Metal Bands In Metro Phoenix” on August 29, 2017. Murkocet comprises of vocalist Richie Jano, guitarist Nate Garrett, drummer Mike Mays and bassist Jared Pettit. Heavily influenced by Lamb of God, Slipknot, Hatebreed and the like, Murkocet combines their own musical talents to deliver a highly aggressive and unrelenting sound with a catchy melodic groove. The band’s main objective has always been to write material that would not only be exciting musically, but have a strong emphasis on crowd involvement. Their captivating live performance and high energy stage presence prescribes every audience a heavy dose. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/luciaandglynn/support

The LAVA Flow | Libertarian | Anarcho-capitalist | Voluntaryist | Agorist

I had no idea how far back the history of asset forfeiture goes. Find out all about it in this episode. Also, What's in the News with stories on private disaster relief efforts, cops getting off with murder, Motel 6 is a bootlicker, kindergartner suspended for imagination, and Maine nullifying federal food laws. I also discuss a new contest I'm running that you can win, and a new podcast project I've released for Pax Libertas Productions that you don't want to miss. This episode is brought to you by Tom Woods's Liberty Classroom, helping you to become a smarter and more informed libertarian than ever before, for just 24 cents a day. WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES One thing I talk a lot about on this show is government theft. Taxation is theft, but so is forfeiture, both civil and criminal. I didn't realize how far back the history of asset forfeiture went until I found an article in the book I Must Speak Out: The Best of The Voluntaryist that was selected and edited by Carl Watner. There is a link to the free ebook version of this book in the show notes to this episode at thelavaflow.com/71. I found this book while doing research for my latest podcast project called Essential Libertarianism, which I'll be talking about a bit later in this episode. The article in the book is titled "'Sweat Them at Law with Their Own Money': Forfeitures and Taxes in American History" and it goes into detail on the history of this evil perpetrated by our government.  WHAT'S IN THE NEWS In private disaster relief news, there have been numerous accounts of private groups working to help with the disasters created by the various hurricanes we've seen recently, from the Cajun Navy to the Liberty Coalition for Disaster Relief, a group of anarchists working to crowdfund disaster relief and volunteer coordination. Check out their Facebook group. They are a great organization showing "Without government, who would help people in need?" The link is in the show notes to this episode. On this topic, several cruise companies sent ships to the Caribbean following some of these hurricanes, lending their massive ships to the relief effort, transporting provisions and picking up stranded tourists.  Interestingly enough, FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, uses a private company as a benchmark for how things are on the ground during a disaster.  It's called the Waffle House Index and it's a three-color rating that uses green to denote that the local Waffle House restaurant is fully open, yellow for if it's just serving a limited menu (suggesting that it can't get the supplies it needs), and red for closed (a very rare occurrence for the 24-hour chain). In screw the government news, mere hours after Hurricane Irma, Miami-Dade County was ticketing residents for building code violations on their wrecked properties. In we investigated ourselves news, the US Department of Justice has decided they will not charge six Baltimore police officers in the death of Freddie Gray. The Department of Justice has been investigating the case since 2015, when Gray, a 25-year-old, black Baltimore resident, died of injuries he sustained while in police custody. In boot licking companies news, two Motel 6 locations in Phoenix, Arizona are routinely sending in leads to immigration agents when they suspect guests of being undocumented. While an investigation by the Phoenix New Times was unable to get confirmation from Motel 6 headquarters, employees at the motels in question said that collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is standard practice: "We send a report every morning to ICE—all the names of everybody that comes in," a front-desk clerk told the New Times. But this isn't anything new for Motel 6. In 2015, the ACLU released a statement of other nationwide collaboration with police and the government. In government indoctrination centers news, a 5-year-old imaginative boy's parents are speaking out after they say their son was suspended from school for telling a teacher that he had a bomb in his backpack. In nullification news, Maine Governor Paul LePage signed a Food Sovereignty Bill into law, guaranteeing the rights of Maine towns to regulate food production locally, rather than submitting to federal regulation. Don't miss signing up for the new October The LAVA Flow contest by signing up at http://thelavaflow.com/email. PAX LIBERTAS PRODUCTIONS TRAILER I have a new podcast project that just released over the weekend and I think you will want to check it out. It's called Essential Libertarianism and you can get it wherever you get your podcasts including iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play and many others. Check it out at EssentialLibertarianism.com. Essential Libertarianism IS voluntaryism, and that is the basis for this show. A few months ago I picked up an old book from the early 80's called Neither Bullets Nor Ballots: Essays on Voluntaryism by Carl Watner, George H. Smith, and Wendy McElroy. After reading this book, I had a much better understanding of voluntaryism as a whole and it renewed my commitment to this philosophy. I began digging down the rabbit hole of content at Voluntaryist.com, the website for Carl Watner and The Voluntaryist newsletter which has been publishing continually since 1982, which led me to reach out to him about this project. He agreed to let me do it and he is excited about it as well!

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode includes sensitive subjects, such as sexual assault, rape, and child abuse, which may be triggering to some listeners. Listener discretion is advised. In today's episode, Jaye talks religious "insider baseball" regarding the Nashville Statement and American evangelicalism. After a turbulent August in the United States with Charlottesville and Hurricane Harvey, and Trump's words and actions regarding domestic terrorism, transgender people in the military, the pardoning of Joe Arpaio, and his desire to roll back DACA, prominent evangelical leaders have failed to address the issues of the current age. The Nashville Statement demonstrates a missed opportunity for American evangelical leadership to show true Christian love towards LGBT Americans. Furthermore, Jaye discusses why their actions in a Trumpian America have constituted an abdication of their spiritual authority. Citations: Billeaud, Jacques. 2011. In May 1920, wealthy womanizer Joseph Elwell was found shot to death alone in his locked house in upper Manhattan. The police identified hundreds of people who might have wanted Elwell dead, but they couldn't quite pin the crime on any of them. In this week’s episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the sensational murder that the Chicago Tribune called "one of the toughest mysteries of all times." We'll also learn a new use for scuba gear and puzzle over a sympathetic vandal. Intro: The Dodgers, Yankees, and Giants played a three-way baseball game in 1944. Tap That AZ - Arizona Craft Beer Podcast

Established in 2008 Press Coffee Roasters were at the forefront of the craft coffee movement in Arizona. These guys have been making great things happen ever since. In this episode I sit down with Alex Mason to discuss what make Press so awesome.  Coffee shops can be intimidating. For years when I went into any coffee shop I felt like I was on the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld ("If I don't get this right I'm going be ridiculed for years and kicked out forever".) When it came time to order I would panic, just order an Americano and deal with it. It took me years to realize that I don't actually like Americanos. One day I was feeling invincible (and I was the only one in line) so I took my time and ordered a vanilla latte. Boom! That’s what I'd been looking for the whole time! But what else had I been missing out on?!?! This gave me the courage to explore a little more.   With my new-found confidence I strutted into Press Coffee located in Scottsdale Quarter. A cool little place with that beautiful scent of great quality coffee. An avid beer lover the first thing I noticed was a tap. Like a beer tap. My first though was "well if they have beer I should probably get one" but quickly realized that it was cold-brew coffee. Nice! I'd heard so much about this stuff and I guess now was the time to try it. They poured it in a cup that at the time seemed the size of a Dixie cup. "Come on dudes! I need a morning jolt and this ain't cutting it!" is what I thought but figured I'd roll with it. No reason to get a Big Gulp if I didn't even know if I was going to like it.   But like it I did! Man this was delicious. Up to that point black coffee was not my deal but this converted me REAL quick. And that Dixie cup? Yep, it did the trick. Within 15 minutes I had solved the worlds problems and learned everything about every person I talked to. Oh, and I went back in and grabbed that bag of Yirgacheffe coffee that I grabbed and put back on the shelf 4 times in my struggle to make a "buy/don't buy" decision. And it was also fantastic.   When I started this show Press Coffee Roasters were right at the top of my target guest list. They were voted Best Coffee Roaster the past 2 years by Phoenix New Times, named best coffee in Arizona by The Food Network and won a Bronze medal at the 2015 Golden Beans Awards which is the worlds largest coffee roaster competition. So yeah, they're kind of a big deal.   In the episode Alex and I talk about the Press coffee philosophy "from seed to cup" which means they value the quality of the coffee in every single step of the process from the time it’s a tiny lil seedling until the moment we devour it like the savages that we are. Each stop of the coffee process leaves the potential to lose quality that can never be regained. And Press ensures that this does not happen. And we thank them for that.   Intro/Outro music is "La Negra Tomasa" by Arizona's own Fayuca  Want to show your support and help this show grow? Other ways to listen: iTunes  ♦  Stitcher   ♦  TuneIn   ♦  SoundCloud (and coming soon … GooglePlay!) I've known Amy Silverman for more than 15 years, from when I worked with the Phoenix New Times award-winning journalist's husband Ray Stern at another (now defunct!) Arizona newspaper. I remember when their second daughter Sophie was born, and how they contended first with the denial, fear and ultimately acceptance and joy at learning their child has Down syndrome. I am so thrilled to interview Amy on Like a Mother about her new book, My Heart Can't Believe It: A Story of Science, Love, and Down Syndrome. This reported memoir is raw and honest, as Amy contends with her own adolescent notions about learning disabilities, including her casual use of the word 'retarded,' hilarious in its antics of raising a intellectually disabled tween obsessed with her own puberty, as well as tender moments of accepting and learning to love a child who is not like you, or what you thought your family would look like. We talk about the cliquey world of Down syndrome support groups and Special Olympic politics, and the universal mom worries about what life is like for our children after we are gone, felt even more acutely when your child is not able to care for herself. about a twisted connection between her earlier obsession with a retro sex-ed video coming full circle to be the saving grace in her motherhood challenges:           Loving this podcast? The brilliantly funny Anwar Newton (@AnwarDinoCzar, Phoenix New Times: 100 Phoenix Creatives, Big Pine Comedy Festival) sat down with us and watched the one where all the Golden Girls get the flu and fight for 22 minutes. It was some kind of nasty. We talked about vampire banquets, Mystic River dresses and slimy firefighter poles.

I’ve been excited about this podcast for a while, simply because our guest is Bob Beard. Bob is the local PBS station’s official Nerd-In-Chief (seriously), he runs the annual Nerd Walk, writes the geek culture section of Phoenix New Times, loves The Ghostbusters, and is slowly-but-surely writing a thesis on authenticity within nerd culture.
