Today's guest is someone who has already made history for her team — and she's only a sophomore. We're talking about the one and only Chloe Cho! Chloe earned four Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the most in program history for Illinois. She also took home the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award at the end of the season, becoming only the third gymnast in program history to achieve that honor. With her sophomore season on the horizon, Chloe has only scratched the surface of what she's capable of accomplishing. Mark talks with Matt Oney about his introduction to modeling instruction and how he uses modeling methodology in the university setting. They talk about the importance of fostering, as opposed to squashing, the curiosity that all children have. Modeling instruction is designed to train students to use their curiosity to pursue answers, and students are engaged in that learning. Additionally, they discuss ways that teachers may be inadvertently killing students' curiosity. They talk about the importance of modeling the student-centered approach in the professional development that we offer to teachers because we want their classrooms to be student-centered. Guest Matt Oney Matt Oney is the Associate Director for Integrated Secondary Science at Michigan State University in the Center for Integrated Studies in General Sciences. His primary focus is on preparing future science educators. In addition, he is the College of Natural Science coordinator for the Certification in College Teaching Program. Matt earned master's degrees in plant biology and education from MSU. Prior to joining MSU as a faculty member, Matt was a high school chemistry and physics teacher in the Upper Peninsula. Highlights [2:33] Matt Oney: "what the myth busters are currently doing of just like taking these general curiosities that they have about the world and identifying ways that they can answer those curiosities. I was like, that's what I want my students to do. But I had no idea how to do that related to physics." [23:42] Matt Oney: "I would argue that all subject matters should be inquiry based and that our students should be learning through their own curiosities," [25:13] Matt Oney: "Learning is not necessarily, fun. It's challenging, but it's engaging. And we have such a huge responsibility to make sure that we are not killing the curiosity of our students." Resources Download Transcript Ep 73 Transcript
Husker Nation, this one's personal. Bye week's over—now it's Sparty's turn in the woodchipper. Let's talk where Nebraska attacks and why this should be a get-right Saturday. We open with the team's mindset—no smiles, just business. Then we dive into Michigan State's offense under Jonathan Smith and a mobile QB who'll pull it down—but ball security isn't perfect and their WR room leans on just a couple guys. We hit MSU's defense: top-50 vs the run, but rough on third down and 93rd in red-zone D—exactly where Nebraska focused during the bye. We talk Huskers' red-zone/run-game fixes, the O-line shakeup watch (Pritchett chatter vs “Gunner Tool”), and why Nebraska's secondary + pass rush match up well if MSU's OL shuffles again. We also call out the sneaky special teams storyline (MSU's punter nukes the ball), then fire through prop bets on Raiola yards, RB2 carries, MSU passing total, third-down vs punt average, Emmett Johnson total yards, and which defense allows more pressure. We close with predictions: point spread, total, and whether Nebraska steps on the gas or coasts. 00:08:11 Michigan State Offense – Mobile QB, limited WR distribution, OL shuffle talk, turnover notes 00:18:31 Michigan State Defense – Run-D strength vs Nebraska's red-zone/run-game fixes; third-down issues 00:23:12 Interesting/ Funny Fact – This could be a special-teams game: MSU's punter bombs it, elite net punting 00:26:04 Prop Bets – Raiola passing line, RB2 carries, MSU pass yards vs Blackshirts, 3rd-down vs punt avg, Emmett total yards, pressure allowed 00:55:09 Predictions – Spread/total talk, why we think Nebraska rolls, style-points vs coast mode What say you, Husker Nation—do we hang 40+ or does this turn into a punter duel? Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz delivered his 2025 State of the University address at the faculty investiture on September 30, 2025.SUMMARY KEYWORDSState of the University, new professors, leadership initiatives, enrollment record, US News rankings, federal policy changes, Jennison fund, budget adjustments, comprehensive campaign, experiential learning, strategic plan, One Health, research innovation, community partnerships, athletics.SPEAKERSSpeaker 1 00:00State of the University. Speaker 1 00:19So good morning again, and congratulations once again. I think they deserve another round of applause to our 2025, newly endowed professors and chairs. Your excellence truly elevates the capacity of our university to drive our work toward achieving our aspirations as a leading global public research university, and thanks to all my Spartan colleagues for joining us today, including several of our Board of Trustees members one year ago, almost to the day at my presidential investiture here at Wharton Center, I shared a Vision for Michigan State University, not just my own, but one shaped by conversations and collaborations with so many people around our campus and around the community and many of you who are here today together, we outlined big, bold goals, making Michigan State University the most inclusive, welcoming and safe environment it can be tackling grand societal challenges head on, and transforming Michigan State University into a truly next generation University. We also launched several leadership initiatives aimed at achieving those goals, and today, I'm excited to share the progress that we've made and a glimpse of what's ahead. Let's start with some great news, and there's so much that we could talk about and celebrate today, but I want to touch on a few things. First, we entered the new academic year, enrolling more undergraduate students than ever before in our 170 year history of Michigan State University, it's clear that students and families place their trust in us to provide an education that is practical, exceptional and accessible. Students come to us from 139 countries, all 50 states, and all 83 counties across the state of Michigan, we remain the top choice for in state students, with over 8200 Michiganders as part of this new class. And that's why I say that we are Michigan's State University and over 600 highly achieving incoming students join the Honors College, 30 of whom represent our inaugural class of the Williams scholars. 02:52Second, some good news from US News and World Report Speaker 1 02:58US News and World Report rankings just placed six of our undergraduate programs among the nation's top 25 two more than last year. Supply Chain Management ranked number one for 15 consecutive years. Service Learning and Education Abroad ranked number one among public universities, learning communities ranked number two nationally, and the list you could go on and on and on, but there's a lot to celebrate with regard to the incredible academic achievements and opportunities provided through our undergraduate and graduate students here at MSU. And I want to offer a huge congratulations to the faculty and staff who make these programs run, you know, on a daily basis, and, more importantly, to shine on a daily basis. So we're grateful for all that you do. However, not all developments this past year have been easy. Everyone here knows that federal policy changes have disrupted our operations and impacted our core mission of teaching, research and outreach. 04:05But Spartans don't back down. Speaker 1 04:09We mobilize teams to respond swiftly, to protect our research, support our people and continue serving the public, a responsibility that we hold and take very seriously as a leading global public research university, as we always have and will continue to do, I've taken our message to Washington DC and invited lawmakers here to see firsthand the value we provide through research, education and outreach. We've also taken action here at home, through the Jennison fund, we're investing $5 million per year for three years to support affected research programs. Just last week, we notified 37 recipients of this funding, and their work is nothing short of inspiring agricultural economist kajil Galati will be able to pivot from her international work in food safety and security toward applications in the United States, including examining lead testing policies on children's health and educational outcomes. The history department's Professor Walter Hawthorne can complete data integration, supporting scholarly and public access to the names and stories of more than 33,000 historically enslaved individuals on the unique MSU based enslaved.org platform. And graduate student Melina Ortez can continue preparing for a research for a career in research, a cancer research. Jennison funding will support 24 graduate students and restore our fellowships, allowing our continued education of the next generation of scholars and leaders. This is what it means to live our mission, to invest in people, knowledge and purpose. I want to thank all those in the offices and on the rapid response teams analyzing each new mandate and recommending ways to mitigate the disruption to our operations and our people. We will stay true to our Spartan mission and our Spartan values. Not all of our challenges stem from external factors, and I acknowledge the anxiety around our internal budget adjustments, I want to salute the careful work our colleges and administrative units have done to help build a secure, sustainable future for MSU. Together, as one team, we've taken steps to ensure our financial health for the long term. And let me be clear, as I said several times this past year, MSU is not in a financial crisis, but we are navigating a complex landscape and making tough, proactive decisions right now to stay strong. Thanks to our community's hard work, we've maintained the lowest tuition increase among Michigan's public universities over the past decade. We've increased University funded financial aid, and we've protected essential programs while aligning resources with strategic initiatives. 07:33And we're not slowing down. Speaker 1 07:35We're moving forward together as one team with a clearer understanding of who we are and who we can become. 07:46So as I promised, let's talk apples. Speaker 1 07:51Yes, it's harvest season, and Michigan is the nation's second largest apple producer. And that matters because it connects directly to our roots and our role in supporting Michigan's economy and agriculture. I look back at our visit to the Martinez farm in Conklin during our inaugural Spartan bus tour last fall, and I'm proud to know that Michigan's 700 have a reliable partner in Michigan State University, and we saw that firsthand on that bus tour, the training in agricultural and management practices that we offer to farmers such as Paulina Martinez and his team provide the knowledge to Ensure Michigan needs 08:39in apple production, Speaker 1 08:42the Spartan bus store was one of the leadership initiatives that I announced last year. In addition to traveling to Central and Western Michigan last October, we've traveled to Detroit in May to visit places our students call ...

On this episode of Monday Night Therapy, Minnie and Fred welcome Matt Sheehan from Locked On Spartans to preview Nebraska–Michigan State. Matt says MSU's offense has taken a big step: QB Aiden Childs is smarter with the ball and dangerous on designed or scramble runs, with NFL-caliber targets like Nick Marsh. The offensive line is improved but dealing with injuries, including a sidelined left tackle. The problem is defense—especially the pass rush. After allowing big yards to USC and even Youngstown State, MSU has struggled to generate pressures or sacks, leaving the secondary exposed. Run defense is “serviceable,” special teams are a real strength (elite punter, solid kicker/returns), and the fanbase is split between “be patient in Year 2” and “this isn't good enough.” Matt predicts a shootout, calling it a “first to 30” game and picking Nebraska 34–29, while warning that Childs could keep it close if protection holds. In the back half, the crew switches to birthday fun as Minnie turns 50, sharing throwback photos from the Coronation community—cue Zubaz, letterman jackets, and 2008 haircuts—while good-natured ribbing flies. They close feeling optimistic about the weekend, plugging upcoming shows, and signing off with a hearty “Go Big Red.”

Today's guest is a consistency queen and one of the leaders of Kentucky's team – Delaynee Rodriquez. Delaynee is underrated in the sense that she's not necessarily the one bringing home all the awards or accolades, but she's the one silently killing it in the background for her team—starting them off strong week after week and consistently delivering reliable 9.85+ scores on every event, giving her team a solid foundation to build on. Now, as she enters her junior year, we could see her stepping into a leadership role even more and becoming one of the top all-arounders in the country this season.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo, Sammy S, Fabio B, Kerry H, Ricardo A & Brandon!

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") and intern Riley Sager are back in studio breaking down the Trojans 45-31 victory over Michigan State late Saturday night in the Coliseum. It looked like USC had put the game away but the Spartans, in large part to a series of SC mistakes, clawed their way back in the third quarter cutting the lead to just 7 points. At that point quarterback Jayden Maiava and the rest of the offense took over and created some much needed separation, thwarting any potential MSU miracle comeback. Through four games the offense has been elite with no turnovers for Maiava and only four punts on the season, one of which was garbage time in the final seconds of the Michigan State victory. USC is first in total offense at 584 yards per game, first in points per game at 52.5, 1st in points per play, 1st in yards per play at 9.1, 4th in nation with 7.1 yards per rush and 4th with 11.9 yards per pass attempt. It has been a different story on the defensive side of the ball, with some marked improvements over last season but also some major concerns. The front seven is getting after it, forcing a lot of negative plays and pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. However, the secondary is struggling with multiple busted coverages each game including two that turned into Spartan touchdowns on Saturday. The penalties have also derailed some of the better defensive efforts, including four flags on one MSU drive that turned a punt where USC got the ball back into a Michigan State touchdown. The crew talks about all of that and everything else they saw in the Coliseum and what their initial thoughts are heading into a tough road test against No. 23 Illinois. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the very late night victory for the Trojans, taking down Big Ten foe Michigan State 45-31 in the Coliseum. With the 8 p.m. local kickoff the game didn't get over until close to midnight and while it wasn't the cleanest performance, USC is now 4-0 and 2-0 in conference play. Coach Hyde starts the show talking about how improved this USC offense is and how he liked the game plan against Michigan State, utilizing two back sets, play action passes and quarterback runs. With one of the top receivers out and losing a top offensive lineman didn't derail this offense that is playing at an elite level right now. On the defensive side Coach Hyde talks about the much improved play of the defensive line, some shortcomings from the linebackers and how he feels the secondary is playing confused and it is hurting their ability to play at a higher level. Coach loves freshman Jahkeem Stewart and feels he has the potential to be a great player for the Trojans. Coach finishes by talking about the penalty situation for USC after another 10 penalty game against MSU. Coach doesn't mind the aggression causing flags but there are far too many mental errors that have led to punishing penalties. Coach Harvey Hyde has been part of the Peristyle Podcast since 2008 and in the USC football world he is an expert on X's and O's, personnel, coaching philosophies and recruiting. Offense vs Nebraska Starts at 1:00 Is yogurt, honey, and granola a snack? Dave Nastersnacks will give us the answer. Oklahoma was a 24-13 loss but it felt worst than that, this was 30-27 win but it felt better than that (but also worse!). The domination on both lines was more notable than some of the silly, bad things that happened. Between Oklahoma and Nebraska, Michigan hasn't had a complete touchdown drive (but this game had an 8 minute drive to go up by 10). Caveats aside, we're on the verge of saying Greg Crippen is good after he blocked three guys on one play. Running stretch is hard and they're running it quite well. McCulley had a great game but was to blame on Semaj's throw being incomplete. Zero drops otherwise and ran guys over. Everyone else? Not so great. Gotta catch the ball on a slant, get used to passes from Underwood. Should they throw it to Peyton O'Leary? The running backs sure toughened up in this one. Max Bredeson blocks everyone like they're Caleb Downs in the Rose Bowl. Not many Bryce critiques. Catch the ball. Guarnera is just not making mistakes. What's the next good defensive line that Michigan will play, Ohio State? Michigan consistently got a play in, saw the look of the defense, and got a new play in. 2. Defense vs Nebraska Starts at 46:58 Time for a Wink Martindale argument? He doesn't need to do anything fancy. Just run the Iowa defense, you're not going up against an NFL offense. Brandyn Hillman is being asked to do things outside of his base job. 27 points, seven are on Biff, seven are on Hillman taunting, three are on Mangham missing a sack. Otherwise it was pretty good? Raiola was getting sacked every other play. Too many safeties missing sacks. Complaining aside, they got to the quarterback a lot and tackled well. Sanders has been playing a lot and there haven't really been any negative feelings about him. Wink would be a better poker player than Mike Debord but not as good as Jesse Minter. This game felt like Trey Pierce arrived. Cole Sullivan has absolutely emerged, he's little bit of everywhere and has freaky long arms. Defensive backs played well. The Shamari Earls PI was a bit weak. Brandyn Hillman needs to grow up, that was the most obvious personal foul in a minute. Brian usually defends players celebrating and even he says that's an obvious foul. Was it a targeting call at the end of the game? Let's talk about the Hail Mary. Why was TJ Guy dropping? Why was there a spy? 3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 1:25:17 Takes hotter than a Wisconsin fan looking at whatever the shit that was on Saturday. If you're Nebraska, would you go for it on 4th and 2 on the opening drive? Should Michigan have called timeout at the end of the first half? Maybe Sherrone could make a better call here but we can't know that. Zvada hit a 56 yarder and a chip shot to seal it, yay. Punting was okay, how do you recruit punters? What's with Semaj at punt returns? Punt returning has been a problem for a couple years now. Kendrick Bell got the onside! Gary Danielson and Brad Nessler are washed. The turf was a little slippy? 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:51:48 Indiana 63, Illinois 10 This is the most points a top 10 team has been beaten by. This looks like Michigan's boxscore against Central. Cignetti is vindicated. How much is this Indiana being legit and Illinois never being top 10 team? Maryland 27, Wisconsin 10 The boxscore shows a relatively even game, BUT Maryland blocks a punt, field goal, and gets one of the easiest interceptions you've seen. Luke Fickell is done. The boo birds were just apathetic, which is worse than booing. 61 rush yards for Wisconsin on 42 attempts. Oregon 41, Oregon State 7 Oregon State has fallen on hard times since college football ejected them. This game looked like a controlled scrimmage. Is Oregon really good or just beating up on bad teams? We'll see how Oregon does during a whiteout at Penn State next weekend. Notre Dame 56, Purdue 30 Purdue's defense is really bad. Purdue is Purdue. Iowa 38, Rutgers 28 Iowa returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown and could not stop Rutgers' QB. Both teams went up and down the field, what is happening?? USC 45, Michigan State 31 The boxscore looks a little close but MSU gets a 75 yard drive down three touchdowns. Mostly a blowout. The Spartans' defense did not have answers to USC's running game. Aidan Chiles had some explosive plays. Washington 59, Washington State 24 Another Pacific Northwest rivalry that college football has ruined. Does Washington have the best complete package for skill position players in the conference? We don't trust Ohio State's run game. This week, we're taking a break from our college gymnastics interviews to chat with a rising star for USA Gymnastics. We're excited to be joined by Charleigh Bullock, who recently became the junior national champion on the uneven bars and won five gold medals at the Junior Pan American Games.Despite being a junior, Charleigh has proven herself to be one of the top bar workers in the U.S. — her routine is among the most difficult being performed right now domestically. In fact, had she been competing in the senior division this year, she still would have taken home the bars title! She also won the bars title at every single domestic competition this year. And if you include international assignments, she medaled on bars in every competition — always coming away with hardware of some color.Charleigh is an athlete with a very bright future, and we're excited for you all to get to know her a little better today!Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo, Sammy S, Fabio B, Kerry H & Ricardo A!
