It's double your O3L pleasure this week with our 4th Annual Cruel World Special! It's that time of year again - on May 17, 2025, the masses will descend upon Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, for the 4th installment of what has become a destination, a cultural touchstone for fans of classic alternative, new wave, punk, synth-pop, goth, and dark wave - the Cruel World festival. Goldenvoice has once again put together a fantastic lineup of legends, younger bands who are carrying the torch, and a couple of surprises thrown in. This year's lineup includes New Order, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Go-Go's, Devo, OMD, Death Cult, Garbage, Madness, the first appearance of the original ‘Til Tuesday lineup in 35 years, Midge Ure, Clan of Xymox, Buzzcocks, Stereo MC's, Blancmange, Alison Moyet, and "next generation" acts like Nation of Language and She Wants Revenge. As has become O3L tradition, we celebrate this annual event with an episode where we each pick the five acts that we are, or at least would be, most excited to see at this year's festival. This year, we've got a special guest Third Lad joining us, a gentleman who can rightfully be called Gen X's DJ - someone who grew up, like us, under the spell of this music and continues to keep it alive to not only our generation, but subsequent generations. Jake Rudh has hosted Minnesota Public Radio's The Current for 15 years, the weekly Transmission club night in Minneapolis for nearly 25 years, he has been a resident DJ at the famous First Avenue (yes, where a lot of Purple Rain took place) for 15 years, as well as the annual ‘80s music festival '80s in the Sands in Mexico, which is hosted by Richard Blade and many of the classic MTV VJs. We also have Jake to thank for the amazing content on the Slicing Up Eyeballs Facebook page - album anniversaries, artist birthdays, tour announcements and other news. Plus, the world can partake in Transmission on Twitch, featuring 5+ hours of classic videos every week. Would you like to play a game? Bob plays the role of Jigsaw from the Saw movies and subjects Tom and Patrick to a mental blood sport. Will they make it out of this house of horrors? This week's discovery still has me baffled. Lisa Boswell is the greatest talk show sidekick I've ever seen. I want to know way more about these elderly trans women who don't pay taxes and hate Trump. And I have a feeling we'll be checking in on them in the near future. Vinnie Paulino joins us to review this Bizarro World version of Wayne's World. After we have way too much fun with Lisa and Helga, we watch Ray DeVito reminisce about old MTV VJs on BYB and listen to Luis J Gomez recount the time he and Shane Gillis raped my girlfriend on Real Ass Podcast. Then Howard Stern had a surprise interview with Joe Biden and didn't flinch when our current president told lie after lie about his life. Also Misery Loves Company had a big celebrity guest, TJ Miller zoomed in from his hotel room and ripped on both Kevin Brennan and Chad Zumock. Jim Norton and Sam Roberts had Rich Vos on their SiriusXM show and Vos brought them all into the Dabbleverse. It was great to hear how much Sam knows about Stuttering John as well as Chad's catalytic converter shenanigans. Finally we check in on John who had Ray DeVito on just to berate him for doing Hackamania. Also, he was not too happy that Jim and Sam were talking about him. Finally, Maribeth Rosie joins us for another round of To Catch An Alien, the latest edition of Internet News, your reviews and voicemails. bananabag.org/watp – Code WATP for 25% or a 2 pack sample for $1 from Banana Bag Tickets to the Vegas shows May 31st – June 2nd – https://www.hackamania.com/ use promo code WATP for 20% off https://onlyfans.com/maribethrosie https://thecreepoff.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@subredditsurfing Support us, get bonus episodes, and watch live every Saturday and Wednesday: http://bit.ly/watp-patreon https://watp.supercast.tech/ Learn more about your ad choices. Show Notes Episode 406: Ladies and Gentlemen, Rock and Roll This week Host Dave Bledsoe attempts to convince a Gen Z bartender he was one of the original MTV VJs only to learn the bartender has never heard of MTV. (Is that like a Tik Tok thing?) On the show this week we take you back to the origins of the music video and the channel they created. (VH-1!) Along the way we discover that Dave wasn't there when MTV debuted because he was not allowed to up past his bedtime. (Things haven't changed really, he usually passed out around 7 PM.) Then we dive right into the long association of music and moving pictures, even when the moving pictures had no sound. Then we take on the long and winding road that leads to August of 1981 and the music video network that had very, very few music videos. (There were a LOT of Flock of Seagulls videos on repeat in the early days.) Finally we explain the incredible impact the genre of music videos themselves had on a generation and the music industry. (Turns out the record companies could make a lot of money showing half naked women dancing in front of a stage!) Our Sponsor this week is Dave TV the only all music video channel left on television, not affiliated with David Lee Roth and available in limited markets, mainly northern New Jersey. We open the show with the first few minutes of MTV and close with Lucy May Walker testifying in a brutal true crime story. This month, Grand Rapids’ Mustard Plug celebrates 30 years of playing ska-punk. Though they often get associated with the late ’90s “third-wave” ska-punk boom, there is so much more to the group. We aimed to explore this in our interview with lead singer Dave Kirchgessner and guitarist Colin Clive. For starters, before ska was on the tongue of MTV VJs, Mustard Plug was blowing minds in their hometown with their blend of punk rock and ska. And to top that off, they brought a bunch of out-of-town ska bands like Skankin Pickle and Let’s Go Bowling to Grand Rapids before anyone in their midwest town had heard of them. During the late 90s, Mustard Plug nearly scored a hit with their cover of The Verve Pipe’s “The Freshman,” but ended up staying in the indie category on Hopeless Records. During the 2000s, when ska was declared dead, Dave started the “Ska is Dead” tour, proving that ska was in fact not dead. The band even released one of their best albums during this era, the political In Black and White. Even today, as a new crop of ska bands revive the genre, Mustard Plug has seamlessly blended into the scene. At this year’s Fest, they shared the stage with a whole bunch of Bad Time Records bands. New bands and Mustard Plug. We discuss this important history and also touch on some other fun stuff like opening for Weird Al, getting in food fights with Green Day, and just how much mustard they poured on Craig DeYoung’s face for the Big Daddy Multitude album cover shoot. Sometimes Zig and Larry record two episodes in a row. Sometimes when that happens one or the other or both have a couple too many libations and they forget to do a topic. Sometimes is this time. It's still fun. They talk porn bloopers, Christian rock bands, Shirley Manson, they audition to be MTV VJs in the 1990's, and discuss their sweet fashion choices from that time.

We talk to one of the original MTV VJs about MTVs upcoming 39th birthday. Going back in time a bit to how things got started and eventually turned into the music video monster that was MTV.
It's TIME! It's time to Rumble! First up we watch Hulk Hogan try to save his wrestling federation from greedy TV businessman in NO HOLDS BARRED. Then we watch Sly Stallone use and abuse his brother and keep sending him into the wrestling ring in PARADISE ALLEY. Also we chat about what happened to all the MTV VJs, VENDETTA, COLOR OUT OF SPACE, and if we think Doug's kid could beat him up.
We begin as so many podcasts should - dissecting Chuck's hatred of former MTV News Anchor Kurt. Even thinking about it now, I'm a little confused as to how we got there. After spending a fair amount of time discussing MTV and its culture, we talk about an exciting ska/punk tour coming to the area this summer. We talk about the photos of the new Batmobile, then Chuck offers me his (spoiler-free) review of Birds of Prey. We learn about a new documentary about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater as well as the new "Celebrity Escape Room" show. We discuss the Candyman trailer and I talk about my fear of the original film. We bask in the reflected glory of the Impractical Jokers movie succeeding at the box office, then discuss the new Morgan Spurlock documentary Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken. Speaking of which, we tried some new fast food items and talk about that (and get hilariously off-topic) before closing with a semi-serious discussion: what is our podcast?- Brad

Martha Quinn is perhaps most famous for being one of the original veejays on MTV but like so many of us, she started in college radio including the ‘radio station with a college attached’ at WNYU, New York. However, NOT everyone gets lead roles TV commercials for clients like McDonald's, Country Time Lemonade Campbell's Soup and others. Rolling Stone magazine readers voted her "MTV's Best-Ever VJ," and by Allure Magazine, which referred to the 80s decade as "the Martha Quinn years." She even lent her name, face and voice to The '80s Game with Martha Quinn, a PC trivia game! She later joined Sirius Satellite Radio which merged with XM, the channel was rebranded as The 80s on 8, and she joins other original MTV VJs in hosting programs for The 80s on 8. Since last summer, Bay Area listeners can get their 80’s fix on KOSF, which became the market's first all-'80s radio station last summer as I Heart the 80’s @ 103.7! Martha continues to have a great run, seizing opportunities to ‘do it all’, from TV and film to satellite and now local radio…and even raising a family in the process! She shares some keys to that success, and tells us some of HER role models!
Greg and Dave welcome Karen "Duff" Duffy to the podcast for a conversation about MTV VJs, hanging with Sean Avery and Brendan Shanahan, raising a goalie and her remarkable new book about dealing with chronic pain. Plus, the boys talk about NHL expansion to Seattle, NHL All-Star voting, joke T-shirts, that Ken Campbell tweet, that whack Edmonton Journal article about the "good old days" and a debate about the merits of 3-on-3 overtime. Plus, your reader feedback on NHL rivalries. Sponsored by Blue Apron and Harry's!
It's the anniversary of the launch of MTV in 1981! Martha shares the story of how she went from being an intern to being one of the first MTV VJs! Plus her interviews with David Lee Roth.

I WANT MY MTV! Today's Episode we discuss the MTV Movie & TV Awards, The Challenge Finale, and look back at MTV VJs.
The boys sit down to watch 2000's M. Night Shyamalan masterpiece, Unbreakable. The Challenger-like ascent of Shyamalan is discussed, and everyone marvels at the squandered potential of a truly talented writer and director. Samuel L. Jackson has the greatest sense of fashion the movie business has ever seen, and Bruce Willis is kind of an asshole. True to form, incredible tangents are indulged, as the political leanings of MTV VJs are dissected, Allen is a man of many wrestling-related nightmares, and Hulk Hogan is the biggest liar in the history of entertainment. Writer and television personality Dave Holmes returns to the show to talk about his fantastic new book Party of One: A Memoir in 21 Songs (out June 28) which you're going to want to pre-order, not just because it opens with a discussion of Blind Melon. On this episode we talked about Dave's love of pop culture, why Vanderpump people are Dave's least favorite kind of people, his one experience with cocaine, wanting at various times to be part of a group, coming out to his parents, the way a Catholic upbringing stays with you, being in a love bubble, the time he had sex with a woman on a fact-finding mission, overly narrow definitions of masculinity, writing about politics, dogs, dog food, Small Wonder, MTV VJs he's still friends with and so much more. We also did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.
