Book Vs. Movie: Valley GirlsThe Frank & Moon Zappa Song Vs. the 1983 Classic FilmWe know that Frank Zappa did not authorize using the song Valley Girl (co-written with his 14-year-old daughter Moon Unit in 1982.) But we had to cover this movie because if there was ever a song that influenced the culture of the early 80s --this was it.Moon Zappa is the oldest child of the late Frank Zappa, and after spending most of her childhood waiting for her dad to make time for her, she reached out to him with his favorite love language--snarky lyrics. Using expressions from her peers in the San Fernando Valley--the Zappas created a song that lampoons the white bread, snotty culture of “Vals.” The fact it became a hit song (and Frank's only Top 40 single) shocked everyone involved. The producers of the 1983 film tried to get Frank to sign the rights but only with the overall approval of the script and music. The film, directed by Martha Coolidge and starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman, became a classic teen film that must have stung Frank, who sued the producers as Valley 9000 and lost. So what are the main differences between the song and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? In 1981, the launch of MTV coincided with the rise of Billy Squier, and the two were a match made in pop culture heaven. The year ended with a singalong performance of his holiday single, “Christmas Is The Time to Say I Love You,” filmed at the MTV studios in New York City and aired as MTV's first Christmas special. All five original MTV VeeJays were a part of the choir: Mark Goodman, Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, and the late J.J. Jackson, and the moment captured both the energy of those early MTV true believers and the spirit of the season. In a twist of irony, it was another video released a few years later that got Squier into hot water with his fans! Unwrap the history in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast. “Video Killed the Radio Star,” as the song and video that launched MTV in 1981 told us, and Millennials, among other pop culture deaths they have been accused of, killed the music video star at the end of the TRL era. It was replaced by reality series on MTV … though many current viewers may not know that before reality TV was the thing on MTV, it was most definitely athing – thanks to The Real World. The granddaddy of all MTV reality shows, and a seminal series in all of American reality TV, The Real World began in 1993 with seven strangers picked to live in a New York City loft together, and find out what would happen “when people stop being polite and start getting real.” The show ran for more than 30 seasons, filled with fights, tears, hookups, and copious amounts of alcohol at its worst and most embarrassing moments. But then there were moments of pure grace, where the cast took the chance to understand people unlike anyone they’d ever met before. And for one very special season, the audience was riveted by a heroic young man named Pedro, who charmed, educated, and truly showed just how the real world, and The Real World, could be. Almost 30 years after the MTV series premiered, the Paramount+ streaming service is reuniting The Real World: New York cast in that same NYC loft, when we see Eric, Kevin, Norman, Julie, Heather, Becky, and Andre get real again.  This week on Pop Literacy, we talk with Amanda Ann Klein, the author of the fantastic new book Millennials Killed the Video Star: MTV’s Transition to Reality Programming, about The Real World’s place in MTV history, why Pedro and that third season of the show changed reality TV, and what she, like us, her fellow Gen Xers, can’t wait to see what the New York cast shares about 30 years of reality television fame. Our guest this week: Millennials Killed the Video Star: MTV’s Transition to Reality Programming by Amanda Ann Klein Read more about The Real World and the history of MTV: I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution by Ron Tannenbaum and Craig Marks  VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV’s First Wave – by Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn, and Gavin Edwards  Money for Nothing: A History of the Music Video from the Beatles to the White Stripes by Saul Austerlitz

In ROCK UNDER FIRE Episode 49, we present Mike Derrico's full conversation with original MTV VJ NINA BLACKWOOD. Portions of the interview were featured in "The Rise & Fall of MTV," an episode of RUF's sister podcast, RETROSPEAK, where Mike and Pat Ivanitski discuss the early years of MTV, the channel's influence on pop culture and the music industry, as well as its fall from relevance. NINA BLACKWOOD is one of the five original VJs on MTV from the channel's launch in 1981 through 1986. She went on to host Solid Gold, the Rock Report segment of Entertainment Tonight, and nationally syndicated radio shows, Nina BlackWood's Absolutely 80s and Nina Blackwood's New Wave Nation. Blackwood can be heard today on the 80s on 8, available on SiriusXM.   As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history leaves an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone.   In past episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, J Geils Band, Billy Miller, Chris Cornell, Turn Me On Dead Man, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, disco vs. rock, Ticketmaster, Tom Petty, and most overrated and underrated artists. We've also been joined by special guests such as, author and photographers Bob Gruen, STARZ guitarist Richie Ranno, Joe Long of the Four Seasons, Lydia Criss, author and pop culture critic Alice Echols, writer and director Michael Lee Nirenberg, and Judas Priest legend KK Downing. MTV VJ Icon, SiriusXM 80's on 8 I Want My MTV.................. This week I Blast off into a Rock and Roll 1st Wave Flashback with the very 1st VJ to appear on screen @ MTV: Alan Hunter! And you can get a glimpse into the groundbreaking history, original VJ's, music artists, celebrities, location gigs & fun in the new book: “VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV’s First Wave” Alan Hunter was one of the original five video jockeys (VJ's) on MTV from 1981 to 1987 (along with Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Martha Quinn, and J. J. Jackson) During his senior year in college he got his first television acting job in the ABC MOW Love’s Savage Fury, starring Raymond Burr, Jennifer O’Neill and Michael Paré. Afterwards, he held a series of cliché struggling actor gigs: bartender, waiter, phone answering service attendant and a handful of Off Off Broadway roles, He earned a role in the music video for David Bowie's "Fashion" and a role as usher in the film musical Annie, before being tapped to join the fledgling MTV network. August 1, 1981 at midnight in selected markets. Hunter was, by accident, the first VJ to appear on screen, with the words "And I'm Alan Hunter. Let's get to it". During his first month with MTV, he kept his regular job tending bar at New York's Magic Pan. When a customer recognized him, he left bartending and became a full-time VJ, attending concerts and parties until the wee hours and then coming back to the studio at 8:00 AM for a full day of taping interviews, promos and features. As MTV became the center of the entertainment universe, Hunter’s celebrity interviews included the first MTV interviews with Madonna, Duran Duran and U2, and also included Ozzy Osbourne, Aretha Franklin, Frank and Moon Unit Zappa, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Loverboy, Kasim Sultan, Crosby Stills & Nash, Kevin Bacon, Robin Williams, Dan Aykroyd, Eurythmics, Kenny Loggins, the Psychedelic Furs, Bob & Doug McKenzie, Lou Reed, Joey Ramone, Andy Warhol, the Cars, the GoGos, the Bangles, Colin Hay and Men at Work, Boy George, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, John Mellencamp, Hugh Hefner, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Rod Stewart, Cheap Trick, Billy Idol, Thomas Dolby, Joe Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Crowded House, Michael McDonald, Rick Springfield, Peter Wolf, Toto, Level 42, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Martin Short, Chevy Chase and Pee-Wee Herman among others. In his latter MTV years, Hunter became known for his remotes and road trips in such iconic and pioneering MTV programming like “MTV Spring Break”, “MTV’s Amuck in America” and “MTV’s Hedonism Weekend with Bon Jovi in Jamaica”. Hunter distinguished himself by pushing for more remotes and road trips rather than in-studio interviews. He stayed with the network for seven years before relocating to Los Angeles, where he starred in numerous Fox pilots, precursors of today's reality programming. In the mid-90s, he moved back to his hometown to start a film company with his brother called Hunter Films, and, to create WorkPlay. You can catch Alan on SiriusXM's 80's on 8! © 2013 Building Abundant Success!! 2013 All Rights Reserved Join Me on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/BuildingAbundantSuccess

Nina Blackwood was one of the original five VJs that played all that crazy music in the early days of MTV. Unbelievably the network quietly just celebrated it’s 30th anniversary. Icon Fetch sits down with the former Ohio resident about how she got chosen to join the fledgling network and what those early days were like, when it seemed like new music was spilling over everywhere. We also touch on some of her current projects, including the nationally-syndicated Nina Blackwood’s Absolutely 80’s, and her daily slot on Sirius/XM’s 80’s on 8 channel.
