Taco Bell Is the Most Creative Fast Food Restaurant—But At What Cost? Taco Bell is the fast-food chain that isn't afraid to get weird. Over the years, they've served up bold (and sometimes questionable) menu items like the Naked Chicken Chalupa, the Firecracker Burrito, and even a Kit Kat Quesadilla. But alongside its reputation for creativity, Taco Bell has a messy history—food recalls, bizarre marketing stunts, and legal battles that only Taco Bell could pull off. In this episode, comedian Priya Pappu joins me to unpack the history of America's most inventive fast-food chain. We dive into how Taco Bell was founded, its strangest discontinued items, its failed upscale spin-off, and the time it got sued for serving horse meat in Europe (yikes). We also check Yelp reviews for the Taco Bell we visited—because people have some thoughts. Also, VyVy Nguyen is back and here to read a fan-submitted What's Going On Over There from the show's Discord server! "Fine" Dining is now on video! Head on over to my YouTube to WATCH this episode! IN THIS EPISODE: ✔️ Taco Bell's Origins – Started by a guy named Bell, but not a taco in sight ✔️ The Strangest Menu Items – From Cheetos burritos to Pop Rocks-style tacos ✔️ Marketing Stunts & PR Disasters – They tried to “buy” the Liberty Bell?? ✔️ Healthier Than You Think? – The surprising facts about Taco Bell's menu ✔️ Lawsuits & Recalls – E. coli outbreaks, metal shavings, & food safety scares ✔️ Yelp Chaos – Unhinged customer reviews of the Taco Bell we ate at
In New Jersey, a girl was caught on video on an amusement park ride getting smacked in the face by a seagull. In a related story, the Seagull News Network, SNN, says there's an alarming up-tick in human girls getting in the way while you're trying to fly away from New Jersey. In the Netherlands, there's a new record for the world's most-expensive burger; at $7k a plate. Wow, inflation is getting out of control. Apparently it comes with King Crab, Dom Perignon-battered onion rings, Italian White Truffle, Beluga Caviar, gold-crusted saffron, and Macallan single-malt Rare Cask scotch -infused BBQ sauce. Know what it doesn't come with? A safe to lock it up in. Listen up, MMA fans. Conor McGregor seems to have gotten over his recent UFC loss and broken leg, because he just got a $3.5M Lamborghini yacht. Good to see he's gotten his sea legs. Sorry, sea "leg". In Toronto, a gym called Fearless Boxing has banned entry to anyone who HAS been vaccinated. I guess the only thing fearless there now is the coronavirus itself. My sources say in order to prove you haven't been vaccinated, they make you bring a low scoring IQ test result. Finally, Taco Bell's menu has been hit hard by shortages of many ingredients, including chicken, beef, tortillas and hot sauce. But don't worry, even without any of those things they can probably still make you a Naked Chicken Chalupa to their same high standards of quality. God knows what the hell is in there.
Larry and Mike hit the drive thru to memorialize Taco Bell's Naked Chicken Chalupa and wash it all down with some sweet Gatora... er, Mountain DEW!!!

Yes, the rumors are true. (Stop saying, “what rumors, who are you people and how did you get into my living room?”) This is the final episode of Sources with Knowledge. Eric and Joe reflect on the program, which managed to outlast both Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and Madigan’s replacement in the legislature. So, that’s not nothing. Vaccine rollout is going actually really well, and an op/ed in the Wall Street Journal suggests that we could hit heard immunity by April. It’s time for optimism, folks. In a shocking surprise, Eric and Joe are joined by two ex-presidents who turned out to be fans of the program: Donald J. Trump and George W. Bush both join to the final episode. And finally, as if like Mexican manna from heaven, Taco Bell has released a Fried Chicken Taco as their entry in to the chicken sandwich wars. Don’t they realize they already made fried chicken perfection in the Naked Chicken Chalupa? Acknowledgments – Eric and Joe would like to thank a few people who made this program possible: Marcus Brown and everyone at AM 560 The Answer for giving us air time and the opportunity to do this program; Hilary Yelvington, Melanie Krakauer and Rachel Wittel who helped us name this show; Thea Baldwin for designing the program logo; John Giokaris for his appearance on this episode as Donald Trump; Zachary Urevig for his appearance on this episode as George W. Bush; and, finally, everyone who listened to this program. We’re humbled by it all, even if we’re also baffled as to why you wanted to hear what we thought about anything. Thank you. This title was inspired by this article If you’re a fan of this podcast, I talk about taco bell a lot and I finally got a chance to talk to the registered dietician from Taco Bell. And I did not hold back. I talk about pretty much everything from the Naked Chicken Chalupa to the Power Bowl and praised every single item on Taco Bell’s menu. But of course, there’s some takeaways. One huge thing I want you to notice is how Missy carves her path. After working in 6 months in Taco Bell, she said “I want to own Nutrition in Taco Bell”. Not only that, but she continues to learn how to become a better and better employee by finding mentors in different departments. Other than that, we’ll talk about how being a dietitian in the fast food industry works, how to customize your taco bell order, and we share our experiences eating Guinea Pig in Peru About Missy Missy Schaaphok is the Senior Nutrition Strategist for Taco Bell Corp. spearheading the strategic global efforts for nutrition and product development. Within this role, she is responsible for sensible menu development, regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement, animal welfare, and sustainability. She works closely with executive, legal, brand marketing, and public relations teams to communicate Taco Bell’s commitment to quality and affordable food experiences. Missy plays a big role in how Taco Bell creates food that is fun, innovative and craveable, food you want to eat again, and food that fits customers’ evolving lifestyles. She has been the voice in telling Taco Bell’s “food for all” journey while also leading efforts behind the scenes. Most recently, Missy led the development of the Power Menu, a menu featuring high-protein bowls and burritos under 510 calories. She is also the driving force behind the brand’s commitment to simplify its ingredients, reducing sodium across the menu and removing artificial flavors and colors, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil and unsustainable palm oil; bringing customers a vegetarian menu certified by the American Vegetarian Association – the first of its kind in the Quick Service Restaurant industry, and leading the switch to cage-free eggs and serving chicken raised without antibiotics important to human medicine, in all U.S. restaurants. Missy has been recognized for her leadership serving on expert panels and presenting at key industry events like World of Healthy Flavors, Healthy Menu Collaborative, Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, National Restaurant Association and California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. While working at WIC, she wrote and published her first cookbook titled, WIC Tested, Dietitian Approved. Since then she has contributed to the book on Recipe Nutrient Analysis: Best Practices for Calculations for Chemical Analysis and co-authored, “Uniform National Menu Labeling: Review of the Regulation and the RDN’s Role in Effective Implementation" for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Food & Culinary Practice Group. Missy is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, currently serving as the Chair-Elect for the Dietitians in Business and Communications Dietetic Practice Group. She also holds volunteer positions within the National Restaurant Association's Nutrition Executive Study Group and The Culinary Institute of America’s Healthy Menu Collaborative Protein Working Group.
