On March 27th, 2022, Cassie Carli was scheduled for a custody exchange to pick up her 4 year old daughter Saylor from her ex, Marcus Spanevelo at Juanas Pagodas in Navarre Beach, Florida. Cassie would go missing and ultimately be found dead a few days later. Two years later, a new bill, called the Cassie Carli Bill, would pass requiring designated safe locations for custody exchanges to prevent tragedies like hers.

Cassi Carli Marcus Spanevelo update: Missing Florida Mom's Ex Was Ordered To Pay Her Lawyers Just Days Before her disappearance Marcus Spanevelo, who faces charges related to the disappearance of his ex, Cassie Carli, had been ordered to pay her lawyers' fees as part of an ongoing acrimonious custody battle just days before she went missing. Marcus Spanevelo, 34, is currently being held in Tennessee on charges of tampering with evidence, giving false information concerning a missing persons investigation and destruction of evidence. He was arrested on Saturday in Tennessee on a warrant out of Santa Rosa County in Florida, police announced. Spanevelo's charges relate to the disappearance of his ex, Cassie Carli, 37, who went missing after the scheduled custody swap of their 4-year-old daughter on March 27 in the parking lot of the restaurant Juana's Pagodas in Navarre Beach, Florida, which is just west of Pensacola. Her family reported her missing on March 28 and, on March 29, her car and purse were found in a parking lot near the restaurant. Carli, 37, was last seen on March 27 when she met Marcus Spanevelo — the father of her 4-year-old daughter — for a child exchange in the parking lot of a Navarre Beach restaurant, authorities said. She was reported missing the next day. Carli's car and her purse were recovered Tuesday on a “boat overflow ramp” near the restaurant, investigators said. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook Saturday that Spanevelo had been arrested in Lebanon, Tennessee, by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and state troopers. Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said in a news conference Sunday that the Major Crimes Unit had traveled over 1,500 miles in a week, searching for evidence relating to Carli's disappearance. “We discovered her body while executing a search warrant in Alabama. It was in a barn, in a shallow grave,” Johnson told reporters. The sheriff said police were not yet revealing what led them to the location Saturday evening, but that the property was linked to Spanevelo “in a roundabout way.” An autopsy would be conducted on the body in Alabama on Monday, Johnson said. Her identity was “confirmed by a tattoo,” he added. He said he notified Carli's family in person on Sunday and they were “crushed.” “It gives them some closure that they know where's she's at now. But still it's their daughter … daughter and sister and it is terrible.” Carli's daughter was located Wednesday with Spanevelo in Birmingham, Alabama. On Sunday, Johnson said that she was safe and with family. Spanevelo is being held in Tennessee on charges of tampering with evidence, giving false information concerning a missing persons investigation and destruction of evidence, the sheriff's office said. It was not immediately clear Sunday morning if he had an attorney who would comment on his behalf. Spanevelo allegedly took Carli's phone “and basically got rid of it,” Johnson said in a news conference Sunday. Asked if Spanevelo had cooperated with investigators, the sheriff said “absolutely not.” “He was totally uncooperative, he never cooperated at all with us,” he said. “It's your baby's mother and she's missing and you're not going to cooperate with authorities — that's kind of tell-tale,” he said. Johnson said police believe Spanevelo had acted alone. The State Attorney's Office said if Spanevelo did not waive extradition it could take about 30 days to return him to Florida. Johnson said any potential additional charges are pending the results of the autopsy. He said he was unaware of any previous criminal record on Spanevelo. Family members have not heard from Cassie Carli since Sunday, March 27. Sheriff Bob Johnson said Carli was last seen at Juana's Pagodas, a restaurant in Navarre Beach, when she was there to meet with the father of her child. Investigators said Carli agreed to meet Marcus Spanevelo there to exchange custody of their three-year-old child. On Monday, family members reported Carli missing. Deputies went to the restaurant and found her car parked there with her purse still inside, but no sign of Carli. “We consider her missing/endangered. In other words, we don't know what happened to her. We don't have evidence specifically pointing to homicide, an abduction, or any of those,” Sheriff Johnson said. “We just know the way she has gone missing concerns us greatly.” Spanevelo was located in Birmingham on Wednesday. He had the child with him and the daughter is safe, the sheriff said. Investigators went to Birmingham and questioned Spanevelo about Carli's disappearance. The sheriff did not reveal what was said in that interview. The sheriff said the FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are assisting in the search. The records show the company has been hit with $250,000 in fines by the government for safety violations, way more than other RV makers or suppliers in the area. There was no comment from the company. JENNIFER Texas may see biggest wildflower display in a decade this spring  If you are anywhere near Texas, officials are predicting the biggest wildflower bloom in a decade this spring thanks to above average rainfall. We thought the Texas bluebonnets were gorgeous last year (see our report here) and are looking forward to heading back to the state in the next few weeks. MIKE After wolves from Banff National Park legally killed outside park's boundaries, some urge passing of buffer zones  At least two radio-collared wolves were legally hunted on federally owned land just outside Banff National Park recently, triggering concern among some in Canada about the need to have a buffer zone surrounding national parks. The story reminded me of a similar one we shared a few weeks back about a beloved wolf legally killed just outside Yellowstone National Park recently. JENNIFER Reservations to camp at bucket list Alaska's Katmai National Park to open March 2 Reservations to camp at Brooks Falls Camp in Alaska's Katmai National Park will open March 2 at 12 pm eastern and spots at the bucket list site where giant brown bears feast on salmon are expected to be booked within hours. What do Roadtrek owners do for warranty work and parts now that the company has shut down? The biggest scandal to envelop the RV Industry continues to dominate the RV news this week, namely the sudden shut down if the Roadtrek and Hymer factories in Ontario and the immediate termination of more than 850 workers. Nobody saw that coming, especially the revelation that the company is insolvent, $300 million hopelessly in debt because of years of management exaggerating or intentionally overstating profitability. The news has left tens of thousands of Roadtrek owners wondering what will happen to their warranties, what do they do about parts and repairs? We will offer some expert advice from our friend Nick Schmidt of Sunshine State RVs, who is stepping up to help with those issues. Plus, news, tips and another fun off the beaten path report from the Burketts. RV NEWS OF THE WEEK Mike Roadtrek's parent company terminates 900 employees, shuts doors Erwin Hymer North America, the maker of Roadtrek, terminated 900 employees, closed its doors, and filed for receivership Friday. The devastating move came after financial irregularities were discovered in January.  JENNIFER America now has 61 National Parks  The spending bill that President Donald Trump signed last Friday included a provision to change the name of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to Indiana Dunes National Park immediately. That brings the number of national parks from 60 to 61. The area is comprised of about 15,000 acres of woodlands, prairies, savannas, bogs, wetlands and the sand dunes. Its beaches run along about 15 miles of the Lake Michigan shoreline. MIKE Oregon state parks break camping records in 2018; higher fees coming  Oregon state parks set a new record in the number of campers using its state parks in 2018. As a result, the state is piloting a program in 2019 that will raise camping fees at its most popular parks, lowering them at the less popular ones. JENNIFER Joshua Tree National Park particularly hard it after tallying damage, lost revenue from federal shutdown   It may be several weeks since the federal government opened after the longest shut down in its history, yet the damage to its national parks is still being felt.  We've all heard of the horrible devastation still affecting Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Nearly a month after the storm, water and electricity are in scarce supply. Cellphone service ranges from spotty to nonexistent, landline telephones are out, banks and many businesses are shuttered, cars are damaged and roads blocked. For many, work and school still have not resumed and there's been no outside communication with friends and family Helping out is he Erwin Hymer Group of North America and their special mobile research lab equipped with a Kymeta satellite antenna for the Internet, part of a humanitarian effort sponsored by Liberty Cablevision, the islands cable TV and broadband provider. We caught up with Joe Raetano, the director of advanced research and Development for the Hymer Group, who explains how valuable the Internet Satellite system on his Roadtrek advanced mobile Lab is in helping island residents reconnect. We will try and do this sort of thing again as we visit other parts of the country. Here's a call we got from Gary, who was among those who showed up. As we begin the last week of October, we're starting to see the first signs of the great snowbird migration as tens of thousands of folks from northern states are starting to make their way south for the winter. For those who stay put during the winter, it's time to winterize their RVs, cleaning it out and putting it in storage for the next several months. Jennifer and I are spending a few more days in Florida but we'll soon be heading north to Michigan. We, too, will have to winterize while we're up north, but we are among the growing number of RVers who camp all year round. We love winter camping in the snow but we also plan to head back to Florida shortly after the first of the year. If you ever wonder where we are, there's a live map on the lower right had column of our roadtreking.com blog that shows where we are. There's one big camping weekend left! Most campgrounds are sold out this coming weekend for Halloween, with costume contests, trick or treating and decorated RVs. In fact, the whole month is busy as RVers try to squeeze as many outings as possible before the cold weather arrives. But that cold weather is not to be ignored. Out west, they are starting to close roads in some of our national parks....because of snow! We're going to meet on Navarre Beach, at the entrance of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Now because of the recent Hurricane Nate, the national seashore drive is closed just west of Navarre Beach. But the meet spot we picked is just to the left, or east of the bridge leading from Highway 98 and the mainland to Navarre Beach. Jennifer and I will be there from 2PM on and whoever shows up, shows up. Bring some beach chairs and refreshments and we'll hang out for the afternoon on one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Just look for our 2017 Roadtrek CS Adventurous XL 4X4 and come by and say hello. We're excited to see fuel prices dropping once again…especially east of the Mississippi. A new survey from AAA says that the national gas price average has dropped two cents on the week to $2.47, states east of the Mississippi are paying as much as eight cents less at the start of this week. While gas prices are more expensive than a year ago, the past five weeks of sustained weekly declines indicate that demand may be leveling out alongside refineries and pipelines returning to pre-hurricane operations. In September, Hurricane Harvey drove gas prices to the highest price of the year – $2.67. That was a 32-cent increase inside of 12 days. Now nearly seven weeks post hurricane, gas prices have shown steady decline dropping a total of 20 cents since September 11, 2017 We're really excited about the phenomenal growth of our YouTube RV Lifestyle Channel.
