In this powerful episode of the God Behind Bars podcast, listeners are taken on an extraordinary journey with Damon West, a man who transformed his life after facing a 65-year prison sentence. Damon shares his gripping story, from his successful high school football career to his descent into drug addiction and criminal activities, culminating in his arrest and incarceration.Through his experiences in prison, Damon encountered a mentor named Muhammad, who taught him the powerful metaphor of the "coffee bean" - the idea that one can change the environment around them, rather than being changed by it. Damon embraced this philosophy and used it to not only survive, but thrive, in the harsh prison environment.Damon's story is a testament to the power of faith, service, and personal transformation. He discusses the importance of building a positive brand, controlling what you can, and leaving a legacy of servant leadership.Listeners will be inspired by Damon's resilience, his willingness to accept forgiveness, and his commitment to helping others, even those he once harmed. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking hope, redemption, and the courage to become a "coffee bean" in the face of adversity.Connect with us on social! @godbehindbars @jake_bodine

In an instant Shelby's life was shattered, when her father was shot and killed on December 3, 2021. Her father was her rock; the person that lead her to Jesus, encouraged her, and was always there for her. Days leading up to her father's funeral, she had a moment where she knew that she had to pick bitterness or forgiveness towards the man who killed her father. On the porch of her house, as tears streamed down her face, she had a moment with Jesus that changed her life. She had a vision where she saw Jesus on the cross, in pain, dying for her and for the man that shot her father. In that moment, she decided to forgive the man who killed her father and share Jesus with Him. She realized that, to say that Jesus can't forgive someone, would mean that you are telling God that He is incapable of something, and that's not true. Emotion-filled, she spoke at her fathers funeral, to share about her dad and the forgiveness of Jesus. Soon a video of her speech went viral across the world.Connect with us on social! @godbehindbars @jake_bodine

A Bible in a prison cell SAVED ASAP PREACH'S life! “Throughout my childhood I experienced my parents having a lot of parties. There was a lot of drugs and drinking around, and I was exposed to a lot of things that I shouldn't have been exposed to. I had my first drink of alcohol at 5. At the age of 11 years old, I was se*ually ab*sed. Leaving me with a perverted view on life. All I could think about was lust and fulfilling fleshly desires. I felt like I couldn't tell nobody what I was going through so I just bottled it in. Trying to numb the pain of feeling rejected, I fell into dr*gs and started hanging out with gangs. In 2007, I was Rockbottom sleeping on the floor of random peoples houses. I ended up getting arrested at one of the hardest times of my life! To the point, I told the officer to “shoot me in the head I didn't wanna live anymore”. They arrested me and took me into my cell. There was a Bible in there and when I opened up this Bible, it started speaking to me as if there was somebody else in the room. I began to have this peace inside of this prison that I had never experienced before. I always believed that Jesus died on a cross for my sins, but I never knew you could have a true relationship with Him. But I felt the Holy Spirit in the cell and I called upon God and I said “Lord, if you're real, get me out of this place and I'll serve you for the rest of my life”. I really didn't know what that looked like to follow God since all I knew was the streets. But overtime, the Holy Spirit would convict me and show me things about me that I never knew but also things that he didn't want me doing anymore. So I started to let things go. Since then I have been travelling the world telling people about this hope that I have in Jesus! That he can Set them free from addiction, comfort them when they are broken and be a friend to them! Because that's what he was for me! He also told me that if I would do things that glorify him that he would provide for my family forever! And since I've been doing full-time ministry doing Christian hip-hop music! I was Somebody that the world counted out, but God counted in and made me part of his kingdom.”

Jessica Callahan has such a fascinating story! When she was five years old, her father was arrested and imprisoned. During his incarceration, he learned about Jesus and gave his life to the Lord. This changed the whole trajectory of his life! Jessica and I (Jill) met while serving at God Behind Bars, a ministry that goes into prisons to share the gospel with those behind bars. When I heard her story of why she serves, I knew we needed to have her tell her story. She also helps lead worship once a month when going into the prison. Jessica joined the Navy and served for 12 years. She is very adventurous and tells us about her love for skydiving which she has been doing since 2008. She is a go-getter and loves being in the air! The main thing she shares today is about overcoming a dependence on alcohol. This was a tough journey as she began to realize she was using it to cope and to self-medicate. There was pain she was numbing and needed to finally come to grips with. It forced her to become humble and search for help. Though not an easy road, she is now 861 days sober! Jake Bodine is a man on a mission, and his partner is God! Jake is the creator of God Behind Bars and the mission is to Introduce inmates to Jesus and connect them to the local church. I am telling you that if you want to feel love just watch one of their videos and your day will be made. Since 2009, God Behind Bars has partnered with ministries across the country to transform the lives of inmates and their families by introducing them to Jesus and connecting them with a local church. It's a simple fact that less than 15% of inmates are serving life sentences, and up to as many as 90% of all incarcerated individuals will be released back to society at some point. 75% of those released will return to prison within three years. God Behind Bars addresses this drastic recidivism problem with a unique approach that focuses on the spiritual, physical, and relational needs of inmates and their families. Jake, having battled through life's trials, found strength in wrestling with God. This journey led him to a mission: aiding the most unchurched in the U.S. Jake stops at nothing to grant every inmate direct access to the Gospel, fostering growth, healing, breaking addictions, and empowering them to embrace their calling. A force of nature, Jake's mission brings lost souls back to themselves. In November of 1660, Puritan lay preacher John Bunyan was arrested and subsequently spent the next 12 years in prison. Under the restored monarchy of Charles II, dissent from the Church of England was once again illegal. Initially sentenced to three months, under the condition that he would stop preaching, Bunyan famously replied that he was willing to suffer “till the moss shall grow on mine eyebrows, rather than thus to violate my faith and principles.” In prison, Bunyan completed one of the all-time, best-selling works of Christian literature, The Pilgrim's Progress. Chuck Colson was deeply impacted by this book. Here's Chuck, in his own words: It has often been described as the most popular and most influential book ever published—after the Bible, that is. Yet many literary critics of its time treated it with scorn. Its author was simply a humble Puritan minister who wrote it while imprisoned for his faith. He was not even sure if he should publish it. If you have not guessed it yet, I am talking about The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan…. Pilgrim's Progress is a powerful story of one Christian's journey through life. The people, encounters, and struggles he faces have become part of the English language: Mr. Worldly Wiseman, Vanity Fair, the Slough of Despond, and so many more. Yet Bunyan was not even trying to be particularly clever or original. As Boa reminds us, Bunyan's thinking was so steeped in the Scriptures that his book is filled with “literally hundreds and hundreds of allusions” to biblical references and concepts, and this is what makes its imagery so striking and memorable. As Charles Spurgeon, who used to read The Pilgrim's Progress twice a year, said of Bunyan, “If you cut him, he would bleed Bible.” The book's theological depth makes it almost suitable for a “catechesis” of the Christian faith. And something that has always amazed me about Pilgrim's Progress is just how real Bunyan's characters are. The pilgrims at the center of the story are no Christian supermen, no perfect moral heroes. Boa points out, “There are many weaknesses in [the characters] Christian and Faithful … and we see that faith co-exists with failings.” Just like any biblical hero, the Christian characters here must ask for God's help in fighting their own flaws and failures. Their intentions are good, but they are too easily lured away from their path or cast down by their troubles. As Boa says, “It is Christian's actual frailty, his fallibility that arouses our sympathy for him and makes us wonder what is going to happen next.” Unlike much Christian fiction of our own time, Bunyan's allegory does not try to tiptoe around the fact of sin. The wise Puritan preacher knew he would have been remiss not to deal with it. In many ways, his heroes, despite the seventeenth century setting, are just like us, which is why Pilgrim's Progress still fascinates us. Fascinates us and encourages us, as well—for as Boa goes on to say, Bunyan's book teaches us that “any man, any woman, through grace, can become a Christian hero.” It is a lesson that has carried down through the centuries and is just as powerful today as ever—not bad for a simple Puritan preacher. Chuck Colson knew, of course, what it was like to not only be in prison but to experience the presence of the Lord in the midst of prison. In the epilogue of his autobiography Born Again, Chuck wrote, “I found myself increasingly drawn to the idea that God had put me in prison for a purpose and that I should do something for those I had left behind.” Among the lessons to be learned from the stories of John Bunyan and Chuck Colson is that suffering can produce the Christian's most powerful witness, and that God is faithful to His people everywhere, even behind bars. This Breakpoint was co-authored by Kasey Leander. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

Dr. Cynthia Stewart grew up in Vidor, Texas. Vidor has historically been known as one of the last “sundown towns” in the United States. Cynthia discovered very young that people are complex--people carry within them the spark of God, as well as the ability to be so perfectly against what God tells us at the same time. No one is beyond the love of God and no one is perfectly what God envisions. Cynthia has spent a number of years as a volunteer, chaplain and employee in prison ministry. Cynthia came to understand that she has been working out what she experienced in her family history and childhood community—prison ministry has been a way for her to “give something back.” Cynthia wants listeners to understand that "every single person in prison is a beautiful child of God." Cynthia is the Director of Operations for Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry (TPOM). TPOM strives to transform life behind bars, trade recidivism for restoration and end generational incarceration. Most prison inmates haven't seen their loved ones in two years, and some have never even met their own children. Jake Bodine is the founder of God Behind Bars, an electrifying prison ministry dedicated to planting church campuses inside the walls of America's most dangerous penitentiaries. Jake wants inmates to be re-identified as heroes in their children's eyes, and his team facilitates this opportunity during their Christmas event, “All is Bright” when they roll out a red carpet and reunite families. God Behind Bars replicates a “real world” church, allowing men and women to enjoy fellowship with each other. Jake points out that 95 percent of inmates will be released back into society and the importance of preparing them for this exciting moment by connecting them with Jesus Christ while in prison. Jake Bodine, founder of God Behind Bars, talks about ministry and the power of reaching people in unexpected places. SAPD Officer Cory SchulerI was born in Austin, Texas. I was raised in a Christian home with both parents and 1 older brother. My dad is a pastor who always stressed the importance of having a relationship with God, loving your family, and getting an education. It appeared at times these were the basic foundations that shaped our future goals in life. My dad holds a Doctorate in Theology and has always strived to make a difference in the lives of others starting with my brother and me. We were always his pupils. My mother started her career at a law enforcement agency and at some point was put in charge of purchasing uniforms for the officers. So I spent a great deal of time after school in the supply store. I believe that is where I first took an interest in being a police officer, a typical little boy growing up with aspirations of being a police officer. When I was in middle school my parents moved to Leander. My love for sports ultimately afforded me the opportunity through scholarships to play football on a collegiate level. While away in college, my cousin had gotten in trouble with the law and I saw how it impacted my family. Later, my big brother had gotten into some trouble with the law and was unable to spend time with family during holidays and family gatherings. I felt the impact that had on me and my parents. After graduating from college, I sought out law enforcement. I met with a cousin who talked to me about becoming a police officer. He talked about the brotherhood, comradery, as well as benefits. So I joined the San Antonio Police Department. Being a police officer takes hard work and commitment. It requires long hours of training; it takes a genuine care for the human race. You must have a heart for the people because people will show you the best of who they are and they will show you the worst of who they are. This career provides you the opportunity to make the world a better place, street by street, block by block. It provides great benefits to take care of yourself and your family. I am proud to wear this uniform. I am proud to stand up and be counted among the men and women that make a difference in the lives of the citizens of San Antonio. I also have a responsibility to my family with the common goal to return home every night. I reconnected with a college teammate who later became one of my best friends. He started a nonprofit organization called “God Behind Bars”. “God Behind Bars” mission is to bridge a gap between God and inmates outside the church walls. God Behind Bars works with a couple of local churches and provides an opportunity for a relationship that would not exist otherwise. I have been privileged to walk along side of this organization and I have seen many lives changed because of it. https://sapdcareers.com/For more interviews visit: www.iamrefocusedradio.comPodcast Sponsors:Rockafellas Barber Shop San AntonioRico Rodriguez (Owner)www.facebook.com/Rockafellas-Barber-Shop-105026620034718/?ref=page_internal1733 BabcockSan Antonio, Texas 78229Phone: (210) 782-5188The Dear Agency specializes in helping you understand your coverage BEFORE you need it!We offer all lines of personal and commercial insurance, including Auto, Home and Life.Contact Dawn Dear at 210-507-2169 and visit us at 7529 N Loop 1604 in Live Oak, TX or farmersagent.com/ddear

We had Hunter Chaney on the line with us today. Hunter is the Executive Director of an incredible Non-Profit Organization called "God Behind Bars." We talked about everything from taking the Gospel to Prisons across the country, restoring families through reaching those who are incarcerated to how God Behind Bars is filling in the gap and allowing the local church to grow in the least likely of places. This conversation was inspiring to say the least! Hunter informs us how everyone has the ability to get involved and help our brothers and sisters who are imprisoned become equipped to follow Jesus and restore their lives and families. He also shares an exciting new opportunity for churches to reach their local prisons in new innovative ways. Ultimately this episode encourages us to stay on mission and live our lives with the Gospel in focus. Make sure to tune in and come hang out with us for a few! For the very first time in Red Rocks history, we were able to bring the weekend experience LIVE into our campus at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility! God continues to move in ways beyond our imagination. It was an incredible gift to be there worshipping alongside these women as Ronnie brought the message and reminded us of our identity in Christ and the freedom to live out of this identity.

For 26 years, Fellowship Church has taken the message of hope and purpose in Christ far beyond the walls of any one location. That focus has led us to reach out to people anywhere and everywhere, including some Texas area prisons. In this special message, Pastor Ed Young highlights one of those campuses. And as we discover what God is doing through “God Behind Bars,” we discover what can lead to a life of freedom for us all!
