My experience has taught me that if I want to achieve excellence in something, I should study and learn from the people who have achieved success in that area already. Why should I reinvent the wheel? So, when Cameron-Brooks Alumnus Liam Burns messaged me on LinkedIn that he wanted to be a guest on the podcast and share how he managed his  30+ year career, I jumped at the chance to interview him. Liam is a former Navy Surface Warfare Officer who transitioned to a business career in 1991. He spent the first fifteen years of his career in various sales and marketing leadership positions with Johnson & Johnson. He used that experience to start consulting, executive coaching practices, and C-suite leadership positions with start-up medical companies for the last fifteen years. In the podcast, Liam explains that the key to a successful career is building a strong foundation in the first ten years. With that foundation, one will have many options in the future. These options include living in an ideal location like Liam does now in Denver, choosing to continue as an executive leader in a larger company, pivoting to start-ups, or even striking out on your own and starting your own company. Liam has done all three! I asked Liam, "What's the key to establishing that foundation?" Liam referenced the book The 5 Patterns of Extraordinary Careers: The Guide for Achieving Success and Satisfaction by James M. Citrin and Richard Smith. Citrin is the CEO of Spencer Stuart North America, an Executive Search firm and Cameron-Brooks client. As or the 3 keys to an extraordinary post-military career, Liam specifically references Pattern 5: Find the Right Fit. The key to establishing the foundation is choosing positions and companies based on your ability to leverage your strengths, do work that interests you, and work with people you like and respect. I strongly encourage anyone considering a change or launching a career to evaluate their choice based on those three factors. Make those a priority. Unfortunately, there is a lot of other noise out there that clouds decisions. Sometimes, people want a great career but prioritize the path because it is the path of least resistance; it's easy. The authors do not say this is easy, in fact they say it take work and preparation. Other times, people decide to pursue a career because of the pay or the location. The authors specifically advise against prioritizing extrinsic factors. In fact, they say that when one prioritizes strengths, interests, and fit, those other factors will follow! Drones serve a vital function in search and rescue missions, like in Acapulco recently, providing valuable information to rescuers on the best routes and plans that mean the difference between life and death.   Williams shares dicey situations back in the Navy when he led small boat boarding teams and encountered a caricature of the quintessential Russian captain—a half-finished bottle of vodka in one hand and pistol in the other. Former U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer, Kristen Alexander, shares how outreach and dialogue can create multiple post-military career opportunities.   SUMMARY   Retired U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer Kristen Alexander served on the USS Sampson and USS Pearl Harbor before becoming the first experimentation officer at the Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center in San Diego.   Her duties included developing a course of study to train surface warfare officers in tactics proficiency. Kristen was also responsible for collaborating with industry and academia to identify new technologies and tactics to help close warfighting capability gaps.   Kristen had been exposed to various organizations and networks throughout her military career, which ultimately led to career opportunities in civilian life. Her plan to transition out of the Navy was public, and companies interested in Kristen's skills reached out. Lyla is the co-founder and director of two national nonprofits: PROMOTE, which is focused on innovation through inclusion in national security, and Honor the Promise, which is focused on long-term refugee resilience in the U.S. Lyla will speak about her own experiences as a refugee, her family's difficulty integrating into society, the veteran community's deep desire to help support the Afghan veterans in the U.S. and actions they can take to support their Afghan security force partners. Hello! And welcome back to another episode of the Cameron-Brooks podcast: helping you find the best JMO job after leaving the military. In this episode, I interview Mike Wilkinson. Mike is a former Navy Surface Warfare Officer with a Bachelors and Masters in Communication.  Mike transitioned out of the Navy through the Cameron-Brooks Career Search process in 2016. Mike launched his post military career with Altec Industries which is a privately held company that is a leading supplier of products and services for the electric utility, telecommunications, contractor, lights and signs and tree care markets. They design, manufacture and sell products and provide services to more than 100 countries throughout the world.  Like many Cameron-Brooks Alumni, Mike shares in the podcast how he never considered such a company prior to the Cameron-Brooks process.  He chose Altec because of their strong values and culture.  In the podcast Mike explains that location was important to him and his spouse, Martelle.  However, they prioritized the quality of the company, fit with the organization and career opportunity ahead of location.  Because of this, he chose to accept Altec as a Process Improvement Analyst in Kansas City among several other employment offers.  Due to his performance, in approximately one year, Altec promoted Mike to a Service Area Manager in Houston, TX. Houston was Mike's and Martelle's ideal location preference.  Mike's advice is to prioritize factors like quality of company, fit and future opportunities over initial location because by doing so, he ended up with a great company fit and location. Patrick and I had a great opportunity to discuss his background as a Navy Surface Warfare Officer, now reserve officer, who transitioned to Business School followed by employment in Customer/Partner Operations with Google.   Patrick designs and executes processes within Google Finance to onboard and incubate new forms of payment, product expansion to new currencies and countries and verifying that bank recon, AUP, partner operations and PS&D are working correctly prior to hand-off. He is responsible for implementing EU GDRP regulations across Cash and Revenue Operations for the organization.   He is a founding member of DetBozeman and an avid craft beer enthusiast!

In today's episode, I had an opportunity to reconnect with a fellow shipmate from my time in the Navy, Grant Yeatman. Grant earned his commission as a Navy Surface Warfare Officer from the ROTC program at the University of Southern California, and he and I were stationed for a few years in Norfolk, VA on USS Barry. After leaving the Navy, Grant transitioned to commercial real estate on the west coast via several years in finance working on Wall Street in Manhattan. He gives us insight into how his original career goals shifted during his networking and interviewing, sending him to a different part of the private sector than he'd originally envisioned, but one that provided a great starting point for his career today. We also get the chance to talk a lot about networking, and the value of persistence and dedication when seeking out and cementing business contacts that can help you find the ideal career.
