Siobhan Huggins is an independent researcher with interests in cholesterol metabolism, inflammation, and metabolic diseases. She first went on a ketogenic diet for weight loss in August of 2016, and found that it resulted in numerous physical and mental health benefits. After meeting former podcast guest Dave Feldman at Ketofest 2017, Siobhan's passion for lipidology was ignited and she was driven to research all she could in an attempt to figure out how lipids were involved in the immune system and chronic diseases. After losing 80 pounds, she referred to a lipedema specialist for a possible diagnosis, which sparked her interest in the condition as a whole and the people it affects every day. She was finally diagnosed with lipedema in 2021, and she promptly joined the board of the Lipedema Project as a Research Specialist. She presents at various conferences on lipedema pathophysiology and the mechanisms of why ketogenic diets may be uniquely beneficial for managing lipedema symptoms and progression. We talked all about aquaponics & hydroponics, risks to consider, and how interested growers can venture into ponics operations of their own. Some post-show notes from Sean:When recirculating a nutrient solution, water treatment of some form will be required to maintain optimal water quality (chemically, physically, and biologically). At the most basic this includes physical filtration to remove particulates from the recirculating flow.Accumulation of organic matter (OM) in the nutrient solution is something to avoid, whereas in soil-based farming you want to increase OM. There are a few ways to measure the OM accumulation, the simplest of which is turbidity. People also use ORP (oxygen reduction potential) as an indicator of nutrient solution quality.Even for exempt farms and produce, it is a good idea to prevent contact between the recirculating water and the edible portions of the produce. This reduces the chance of a single contamination event spreading to the rest of the system.Resources:Factsheets - Produce Safety in Hydroponic and Aquaponic Operations https://go.uvm.edu/ponicsCleaning and SanitizingFish Health and HandlingHarvest and Postharvest HandlingPersonal Health and HygieneWildlife and Domesticated AnimalsHydroponic Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) Course - Ohio State University ($150 fee)Qualifies as “GAPs training” for USDA GAP/GHP Audit or as “Worker Education and Training” for GAPs Harmonized Food Safety Standard USDA Checklist and Harmonized GAP+ AuditCEA Food Safety CoalitionIndustry group that developed supplemental guidance for CEA operations undergoing or preparing for Global Food Safety Initiative or equivalent auditsCEA Food Safety Certified label and certification information

Joy was the lead author of the White Paper. In part, the paper suggests that had past CSRS and FERS contributions been invested in stock and bond index funds, the value of the USPS and employee contributions would have grown to $1.2 trillion, rather than the current balance of $298 billion. Under current law, CSRS and FERS contributions must be invested in low-yield U.S. Treasury securities. Joy and Bob discuss the implications of a change in investment strategy.

Who do candidates call when they want opposition research on their opponents? While you're at it, you better do research on yourself as a candidate and face up to your own skeletons! Matt Barron has been lit up by politics ever since he canvassed for anti-Vietnam War congressional candidate Father Robert Drinan in 1970. Drinan won and made his mark on Capitol Hill and across the country, meanwhile, Barron has made his impact behind the scenes, working for countless candidates and causes over the past four decades. We unpack opposition research and how transparency typically benefits candidates, and how, most often, stubbornness does not benefit them. We take a look at the (to this point) extraordinarily quiet race for governor in Massachusetts, Maura Healey's frontrunner status, and how she may break the electoral curse of the attorney general position in Massachusetts (the list of losses for higher office is long: Martha Coakley, Tom Reilly, Scott Harshbarger, etc.) We also cover the severe lack of transparency on Beacon Hill, a trend toward secret deliberations, and the authoritarian nature of the house speaker. In addition our conversation includes: the dwindling number of reporters covering politics and the negative impact to transparency and increase in puff pieces, the contrast between former Congressman John Oliver and current Congressman Richard Neal, Super PACs, an increasing number of Republican registrations in Massachusetts, National Democrats' inability to connect with rural voters, the massive impact that inflation will have on the 2022 election cycle, the Fair Share effort in Massachusetts, how a lot of the joy has been taken out of campaigns because of the cutthroat nature of politics today on the national level, and we cover Matt's exhibit of photographs of Northeast U.S. Post Offices taken from 1965 to 2021 now on display at the Spellman Museum in Weston, Massachusetts, and much more! I hope you'll enjoy my conversation with Matt Barron. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support

On Tech & Vision With Dr. Cal Roberts
Training the Brain: Sensory Substitution

On Tech & Vision With Dr. Cal Roberts

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2021 24:04

This podcast is about big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. Today's big idea centers on the place where big ideas get born — the human brain. In today's episode, Dr. Roberts and his guests explore theories of brain plasticity, sensory substitution, and sensory augmentation. Dr. Patricia Grant discusses the BrainPort, which uses sensory substitution in this case, the nerve fibers in the tongue, to send information to the brain instead of the optic nerve. Dr. John-Ross Rizzo is developing a device to be called the Sensory Halo, which is supported by sensory augmentation. Both guests share what is being learned about sensory substitution and augmentation through these technologies and how this understanding will help perfect future devices to enable people with vision impairment to see better.   The Big Takeaways: The BrainPort is a headset device with a camera that picks up visual input as the eyes would. It uses the theory of sensory substitution by sending stimulation to the nerve fibers on the tongue. The device picks up visual formation in grayscale imagery: lighter areas of the images produce high stimulation on the tongue, while dark areas produce none. This contrast allows users to identify objects in their environment. The BrainPort device is meant for people who are blind so it's not crowding out a person's residual vision. And surprisingly, both users who are congenitally blind and users who have seen before and have a visual memory — have performed the same in clinical trials.  This shows that users are not experiencing a memory of sight. They are learning to interpret the camera's image through stimulating the nerve fibers on their tongue. In the future, there are opportunities for collaboration between BrainPort and other technologies to continue to enhance the user experience to create more autonomy. Another device being developed that draws on some aspects of sensory augmentation is the Sensory Halo. Using a device with sensory augmentation is more intuitive to use than a device that uses sensory substitution. The Sensory Halo is designed to empower the wearer by delivering key pieces of information to safely and independently navigate their environment.   Tweetables: “We put the brain port on him and started training him, and we were doing some mobility tasks...And I was walking around the room and he would just scan the room. Then all of a sudden, I could feel when he perceived me.” — Dr. Patricia Grant “The great thing about the BrainPort is that it gives a person their own sense. It's something that they can experience on their own, and that is of great value to a person who is blind.” — Dr. Patricia Grant “Simply put, I just want to amplify your existing senses and augment what I can give to you right now so that you can have a richer experience.” — Dr. John-Ross Rizzo   Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss.   Pertinent Links: Lighthouse Guild BrainPort Assistive Technology & Advanced Wearables by John-Ross Rizzo, MD, MSCI   Guest Bios: Patricia Grant, PhD, Director of Clinical Research, Wicab, Inc.
