Ivan Hampden Jr. , Founder and President/CEO of Hamptown Music Institute, was born and raised in New York City, and grew up in Harlem's musically diverse neighborhoods to the rhythms of R&B, Salsa, Caribbean, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk and whatever else trickled in. This saturation of music inspired Hampden to start playing the drums at the age of eight, with the local Catholic school marching band. By age 13, he was playing in local clubs in and around New York City, with Blues musicians who helped instill in him a sense of timing and groove. The musical diversity of his early youth set the foundation for Hampden's future work with percussion and keyboards. Hampden started his formal training in 1973, studying at the Jazz Mobile with Charlie Percep, and at Mannes College of Music with Norman Grossman. He went on to attend Bronx Community College in 1977, where he received private lessons at the Metropolitan Opera with Richard Horowitz. During his first semester at Bronx Community College, a friend told him about the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Hampden had to be involved and joined the orchestra—a position he still holds today. While at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Hampden was also a drum and percussion instructor at the Harlem School of the Arts, and at Seton Hall University in the Black Music Department. But his talent reached far beyond Harlem. Hampden has touched and enhanced the New York theater community as well, performing for various shows on Broadway, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, and many more.. Not only an accomplished drummer and percussionist, Hampden is also a producer and songwriter who collaborates with such artists as Luther Vandross, Nick Ashford, Chaka Khan, Eartha Kitt, and many others. Along with being Luther Vandross' drummer and co-writing partner for 17 years (which earned him recognition four(4)times from the Grammy Awards as a Musician, Arranger and Programmer on a number of Vandross's platinum recordings) until the time of the consummate musician's death , Hampden currently records and tours with other notable artists such as Stephanie Mills, Ashford & Simpson, Roberta Flack, Phil Perry, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez. In 2001, Hampden relocated to the south, where he continues to write and produce in between touring around the country and world. In fall 2007, Hampden signed on as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, teaching recording production I and II, and audio postproduction. In the Fall of 2010, Ivan also accepted an offer to teach Drums and Percussion at Johnston Community College. After 10 years of teaching as a music educator in North Carolina, He is now Founder and CEO of The Hamptown Music Institute in Clayton, North Carolina, where his mission is to “Develop the next generation of music industry professionals and Artists.” While continuing to be in demand as a music Producer, Ivan is also working with new local talent around the country. Live Performance credits: Bonnie Raitt, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Maceo Parker, El Debarge, Kenny Lattimore, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael MacDonald, India.Arie and Joe—the list goes on and on. New and accomplished talent alike seems to gravitate toward Hampden. Recording Credits: Hampden's recording resume includes such artists as Diana Ross, Akiko Yano, Ann Nesby, Doc Powell, Jocelyn Brown, Mavis Staples, The Temptations, Nestor Torres, Marcus Miller, Cathy Dennis, Howard Hewett, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles, Ashford & Simpson, Sy Coleman, Tramaine Hawkins and Roberta Flack, just to name a few.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Motown Alumni Association Billy James Wilson was born March 14, 1957, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to BJ and Anita Motley. He had 3 siblings and is the oldest of the group. He is the last living member of his immediate family (with the exception of his mother Anita). Wilson originally grew up in Detroit, Michigan on a little known street called Mayberry Grand about a mile away from the former headquarters of Motown Records. Because of urban renewal the family was forced to Move to the small village of  Willow Run by the age of 6 years old. Where he lived down the street from Nick Ashford who would eventually become the second half of Motown songwriting team Ashford and Simpson; and around the corner of gospel great Marvin Miller, amongst others. Wilson's parents broke up and went their separate ways by the time the move occurred, and when times got bad for his mother and she couldn't properly take care of her four children, he and his siblings had to move with his father, who had moved to Ypsilanti Michigan a few miles from Willow Run. With his father, Wilson lived a moderately middle-class life with his siblings and stepsister Chiquita Maine and Claudine Motley (his stepmother). His step mother (who he fell in love with immediately) “was a living, walking black Marilyn Monroe as far as he and my brother Bobby were concerned” said Wilson. “My last name is Wilson because my parents were not married when I was born” said Wilson.  Wilson's career started in Second Baptist church in Ypsilanti along with a bunch of family members what all went to the same church. His father forced Wilson to be a singer in church and he sucked really bad! Eventually as time went on he learned to sing well, got with his friend Tony Walker

PART ONE Scott and Paul belatedly announce the winner of the Mark Otis Selby CD contest from our recent Tia Sillers episode. PART TWO -  3:18 mark Paul gets the lowdown from Scott on how he managed to pull the Valerie Simpson interview together despite the obstacles! PART THREE - 14:02 mark Scott goes on location in New York to sit down with Valerie Simpson to chat about how meeting a homeless stranger at church opened the door to her songwriting career; why she and Nick Ashford didn't want to be performers at first; the song she told Dusty Springfield she couldn't record; why she was more focused on getting an advance than scoring a hit; which of her tunes was inspired by playing an instrument she doesn't really play; why Berry Gordy didn't want Motown to release "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" as a single; how Valerie realized she and Nick were in love after eight years of working together; and how she ended up on Broadway, thanks to Alicia Keys having to miss a party. ABOUT VALERIE SIMPSON Six-time Grammy nominee Valerie Simpson is best known as one half of the songwriting, production and performing duo of Ashford and Simpson, which she formed with musical partner and eventual husband Nick Ashford after they met at a church in Harlem, New York, in the early 1960s.  After early successes with Aretha Franklin’s recording of “Cry Like a Baby” and Ray Charles’ recordings of “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” Nick and Valerie signed with Motown Records, first as songwriters, where their early successes included the hit singles “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Your Precious Love,” recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. They soon began both writing and producing for the duo, with hits such as “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “You’re All I Need to Get By,” “Good Lovin’ Ain’t Easy to Come By,” and “What You Gave Me.” Additional writing and production credits at Motown came with hits by The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Miracles, Gladys Knight, and Diana Ross, who found success with “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” “Remember Me,” “Surrender,” and a remake of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” that topped both the pop and R&B charts.   In addition to writing #1 hits such as Quincy Jones’s “Stuff Like That” and Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” after their Motown period, Ashford and Simpson began releasing their own recordings as a duo, landing nearly 40 songs on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Their list of Top 10 hits as artists, includes“It Seems to Hang On,” “Found a Cure,” “Love Don’t Make it Right,” “Street Corner,” “Outta the World,” “Count Your Blessings,” “I’ll Be There For You,” and “Solid.”   Ashford and Simpson were the recipients of the ASCAP Founder’s Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the organization. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, named among Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, and provided the inspiration for the establishment of the Soul Train Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award. Following Nick’s untimely death in 2011, Valerie has continued to write, record, and even appear on Broadway in the acclaimed musical Chicago.

Terri Lyne Carrington arranged and produced Natalie Cole’s last recording titled “Come Sunday,” featured on Carrington’s current CD, The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, released in August 2015. “Come Sunday” is Duke Ellington’s sacred classic, which was originally made popular by Mahalia Jackson.  Terri initially met Natalie Cole as a teenager  Terri also performed with Ms. Cole on the concert stage.    The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL presents Carrington leading a rotating cast of superb female instrumentalists and vocalists that includes Oleta Adams, Natalie Cole, Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Chanté Moore, Valerie Simpson, Nancy Wilson, Jaguar Wright and Lizz Wright, as well as saxophonist Tia Fuller, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen; bassists Meshell Ndegoecello and Linda Oh; and keyboardists Geri Allen, Patrice Rushen and Rachel Z. On The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, Carrington juxtaposes her salute to female artists by paying homage to various male artists who have either influenced her professionally and/or informed her musicality, such as Nick Ashford, George Duke, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross and Bill Withers. “Whenever I do something that celebrates women, I never want it to feel like it’s something that excludes men,” she explains. “On this record, I consciously wanted to celebrate the various relationships women have with men either through original songs of mine or cover songs by male composers and song writers.” The male presence and perspective on The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL is even more realized by Billy Dee Williams, who contributes insightful spoken-word interludes through the disc.

We remember a number of musical artists and song writers, among others, who passed away in the previous months. Such notables as Jerry Lieber, Nick Ashford, Dan Peek, and Norma Zimmer are recalled. Mike, Smitty, and Ian pause to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks. They recall how they first heard the news, and their recollections of that sad day. In addition, that day is equated historically to other dates in history that are indelibly marked in the history of our country. Ian recalls "Sea Hunt", and its star Lloyd Bridges. Our Retro-Commercial is for Maxwell House Coffee, voiced by Margaret Hamilton, the "Wicked Witch" of "Wizard of Oz". Listen also for a number of musical clips associated with the various artists who we have lost, in this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site!

Going back to the old school for this weekender mix I have indulged my self with some floor filling crowd-pleasers. Stand out tracks for me are 'Overdose of Joy' which I embarrassingly admit I first heard just a few weeks ago (I know!), and Ashford & Simpson's 'It Seems To Hang On' which I include here as a tribute to the recently departed Nick Ashford. Listen & enjoy. Milneshine 1. Don't Let Love Get You Down - Archie Bell & The Drells 2. Overdose of Joy - The Eugene Record 3. Looking Up To You - Michael Wycoff 4. My guest on this episode is Freddie Bellhouse. Freddie and his partner Nick Ashford are co-founders of Fordhouse, a UK-based acquirer of small companies. In the eight years since they're founding in 2014, they've done 25 deals and are beginning to consider more fund-like permanent capital structures for future acquisitions. I was fortunate enough to meet Freddie's partner Nick in New York City, and we hit it off immediately. He'll be a future guest on here pretty soon. Freddie and I talk about lessons learned going deal by deal, building expertise in integration and organization building, and differences between the US and UK small private equity markets.Listen weekly and follow the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Breaker, and TuneIn.Links:Freddie on LinkedInFordhouseEIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme)Topics:(3:30) - Can you walk us through some of the deals you've accomplished in your career?(7:24) - What are some nuances between the US and UK in regards to SMB?(9:55) - Have you met any people in_______(11:12) - Are there any European companies that have multiples as low as the US?(12:02) - Why have you decided to raise a fund instead of raising deal by deal?(15:03) - What's an example of a company where you needed to build out the executive team function?(17:53) - How do you evaluate whether a team is ready for growth?(19:15) - Have you noticed that most of the compounding growth at a company happens at years 4 & 5?
