Story by: Gail NoblesIntro by: Gail NoblesPhoto: Ryan ArrowsmithUsage: Wikipedia CC BY 2.5Today's topic: Aretha Franklin - You're All I Need To Get By. There are several notable cover versions of the song. Johnny Mathis and Denise Williams, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and some others have cover versions of the song You're All I Need To Get By. It was originally recorded by R&B soul duo Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell and released on Motown records Tamia label in 1968. The song was written by Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. It became one of the few Motown recordings of the 1960s that was not recorded with the familiar Motown sound. Instead the song had a more soulful and gospel oriented theme surrounding it that was influenced by the writers who also sing background vocals on the recording sharing vocals in a church choir in New York City. You're All I Need To Get By was a great song for Aretha Franklin to sing, and she recorded the song as a single in 1971. The song was also included on her compilation album Aretha's Greatest Hits release later the same year. Her version peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the Hot Soul Singles chart. It also features in a 2020 holiday advertisement for Walmart. Most people love the original version of You're All I Need To Get By. Aretha knew how to sing her version without leaving the original way of singing it, but still singing it her way. Her version is loved too, and already the song had a gospel sound, and Aretha was also known for singing gospel. The song was just right for Aretha Franklin. Thank you for tuning in and listening to today's topic Aretha Franklin. You're All I Need To Get By. Tune in again next time for more. I'm Gail Nobles.

Next up in our Summer of Song and excerpts from the stage of the Grammy Museum in 2010 is Ashford and Simpson. Valerie Simpson and her late husband Nick Ashford wrote "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need to Get By," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)," and "I'm Every Woman," among many others. They were awesome to see onstage, with Valerie at the piano vamping grandly as she and Nick told the stories behind their songs.  Support for this podcast comes from Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people. Song: Still Such a ThingSong by: Gladys Knight and The PipsSong by: Nick Ashford and Valerie SimpsonPodcast Vocals: Gail NoblesKeyboard player: Gail NoblesThe song of today is "Still Such a Thing" by Gladys Knight and The Pips. You know sometimes people stop and remind us that our loved ones have passed and gone. Whether dead or alive or living far apart, something from above lets us know that they still exist inside the heart. (Singing)THANK YOU GLADYS KNIGHT for recording "Still Such a Thing" with the Pips. The song was released in 1980 on the album titled "About Love". The Album was Gladys Knight and the Pips most successful album since 1974's I Feel a Song. The album's excellence are the husband and wife team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, who wrote and produced all of the material."Still Such a Thing" is a song that is deeply and strongly felt when I hear Gladys Knight and The Pips sing it. Songwriters Hall of Famer, half of the legendary Ashford & Simpson, and one of Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time chats about "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," "I'm Every Woman," "Solid," and more of her many hits! PART ONE Scott and Paul belatedly announce the winner of the Mark Otis Selby CD contest from our recent Tia Sillers episode. PART TWO -  3:18 mark Paul gets the lowdown from Scott on how he managed to pull the Valerie Simpson interview together despite the obstacles! PART THREE - 14:02 mark Scott goes on location in New York to sit down with Valerie Simpson to chat about how meeting a homeless stranger at church opened the door to her songwriting career; why she and Nick Ashford didn't want to be performers at first; the song she told Dusty Springfield she couldn't record; why she was more focused on getting an advance than scoring a hit; which of her tunes was inspired by playing an instrument she doesn't really play; why Berry Gordy didn't want Motown to release "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" as a single; how Valerie realized she and Nick were in love after eight years of working together; and how she ended up on Broadway, thanks to Alicia Keys having to miss a party. ABOUT VALERIE SIMPSON Six-time Grammy nominee Valerie Simpson is best known as one half of the songwriting, production and performing duo of Ashford and Simpson, which she formed with musical partner and eventual husband Nick Ashford after they met at a church in Harlem, New York, in the early 1960s.  After early successes with Aretha Franklin’s recording of “Cry Like a Baby” and Ray Charles’ recordings of “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” Nick and Valerie signed with Motown Records, first as songwriters, where their early successes included the hit singles “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Your Precious Love,” recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. They soon began both writing and producing for the duo, with hits such as “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “You’re All I Need to Get By,” “Good Lovin’ Ain’t Easy to Come By,” and “What You Gave Me.” Additional writing and production credits at Motown came with hits by The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Miracles, Gladys Knight, and Diana Ross, who found success with “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” “Remember Me,” “Surrender,” and a remake of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” that topped both the pop and R&B charts.   In addition to writing #1 hits such as Quincy Jones’s “Stuff Like That” and Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” after their Motown period, Ashford and Simpson began releasing their own recordings as a duo, landing nearly 40 songs on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Their list of Top 10 hits as artists, includes“It Seems to Hang On,” “Found a Cure,” “Love Don’t Make it Right,” “Street Corner,” “Outta the World,” “Count Your Blessings,” “I’ll Be There For You,” and “Solid.”   Ashford and Simpson were the recipients of the ASCAP Founder’s Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the organization. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, named among Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, and provided the inspiration for the establishment of the Soul Train Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award. Following Nick’s untimely death in 2011, Valerie has continued to write, record, and even appear on Broadway in the acclaimed musical Chicago.

Terri Lyne Carrington arranged and produced Natalie Cole’s last recording titled “Come Sunday,” featured on Carrington’s current CD, The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, released in August 2015. “Come Sunday” is Duke Ellington’s sacred classic, which was originally made popular by Mahalia Jackson.  Terri initially met Natalie Cole as a teenager  Terri also performed with Ms. Cole on the concert stage.    The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL presents Carrington leading a rotating cast of superb female instrumentalists and vocalists that includes Oleta Adams, Natalie Cole, Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Chanté Moore, Valerie Simpson, Nancy Wilson, Jaguar Wright and Lizz Wright, as well as saxophonist Tia Fuller, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen; bassists Meshell Ndegoecello and Linda Oh; and keyboardists Geri Allen, Patrice Rushen and Rachel Z. On The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, Carrington juxtaposes her salute to female artists by paying homage to various male artists who have either influenced her professionally and/or informed her musicality, such as Nick Ashford, George Duke, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross and Bill Withers. “Whenever I do something that celebrates women, I never want it to feel like it’s something that excludes men,” she explains. “On this record, I consciously wanted to celebrate the various relationships women have with men either through original songs of mine or cover songs by male composers and song writers.” The male presence and perspective on The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL is even more realized by Billy Dee Williams, who contributes insightful spoken-word interludes through the disc.

Today on the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Economic Opportunities for Black Americans, we speak to director, Noel Calloway, whose film, Life, Love, Soul is a pause in the narrative that is America today. If 1 and 3 children are living in homes without their fathers, then what does that say about our collective sense of family and the role men play in the lives of their children. When we look at men like Martin King and at his family, the sacrifice they made for the nation and world, when their father was absent from home too many times to count, before he was killed.
