It's Wednesday, so we're talking politics on City Cast Philly. State Representative Jared Solomon of Northeast Philly is sometimes referred to as a “reformer.” Why? He wants to ban Pennsylvania state lawmakers from getting gifts from people who are trying to curry their favor. He wants to term limits for congressional representatives. And he wants to eliminate Philly's long-troubled sheriff's office. In this wide-ranging interview at his law office in Center City, Solomon talks about why he's committed to reform, what's happening with the Roosevelt Boulevard SEPTA project, and how – maybe most controversially – he says people should go to the Northeast for the best and cheapest restaurants in the city. It's been a long time coming, but Dan finally sits down with Bruce Warren, recently retired program director from WXPN, Philadelphia's non-commercial radio station. Bruce talks about growing up in Northeast Philly, getting turned on by Philly soul, Motown, The Beatles, etc, starting a music zine to get into shows for free, and taking a random late night DJ shift at a burgeoning college radio station would change his entire life. Dan and Bruce share their experiences in the restaurant industry (Bruce's gig before he found a life in radio), the changes at WXPN over his 35 years, the amazing people he gets to call colleagues, and what he plans to do with his time now that he's retiring. But don't worry: guys like Bruce don't sit still, even in retirement. Bruce still has the Saturday shift on WXPN from 1Oam to 2pm EST ('The Post Sleepy Hollow Experience'), and teaches social media and business at University of Pennsylvania and Temple University.

The host criticizes the driver for mentioning the tires, suggesting he should have simply cancelled the ride. Legal Angle: DeMoss's lawyers argue that weight is a protected characteristic in Michigan, making the driver's refusal discriminatory. The host discusses the driver's right to refuse service for various reasons, but emphasizes the importance of tact. Outlier Discussion: The host uses the term "outlier" to describe DeMoss's size and compares it to anorexia, noting that both conditions are rare and can lead to social challenges. The host questions DeMoss's choice of vehicles in the past, showing photos of her in large SUVs. Host's Opinion: The host believes the driver should have cancelled the ride discreetly instead of making comments about weight. The host questions why DeMoss didn't order a larger vehicle like an Uber XL. The discussion included topics like the most famous person they'd met and moments of happiness. Famous Encounters: The host shares stories of meeting celebrities like Jay Leno and Adam Carolla, emphasizing the difference between brief encounters and genuine interactions. The host's personal "most famous person" story involves Adam Carolla. As we approach the end of 2022, we wanted to bring you another favorite episode with our viewers from this past year. Our dear friend, Diane Berberian, left us this year, but she also left behind many lessons and the endless light of her hard-won wisdom. Tune in again to hear more from this Brilliant woman. Every day, just be enough. ~ Diane Berberian It is with a mixture of both sadness and joy that we bring you this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast. Our dear friend, Diane Berberian, passed away peacefully last week after a long battle with cancer. To say that Diane was a bright light is an understatement, but she never saw herself that way. In her mind, she was always “just Diane,” although she inspired so many with her grit and grace. A true Northeast Philly girl (we're a tough lot!) Diane fought, but never looked like she was fighting, her wide, bright smile always at the ready. When we spoke to Diane two years ago, she dropped too many Brilliance Bits to count, but her advice to “Every day, just be enough.” was brilliantly simple and striking. Do your best, help others, and just be enough. Tune into this episode to hear more of Diane's simple, beautiful brilliance. Here are a few more quotes to listen for: Sit still and think. People don't take the time to sit still. Find those people you belong to. There may be different people at different times. Beginners need to know that you get more than one chance if you fail. If I don't ask, the answer will always be “No.” ~ Diane Berberian We love you, Diane. Thank you for sharing your light with us all. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together. XO, KS & MFB

Len grew up in a different era in Northeast Philly, when soda fountains and pharmacy counters were the norm. He's trying to preserve a piece of that time at the Neon Museum of Philadelphia, where he's collected over a hundred signs from businesses that have mostly died out - much like neon itself. This week, Sabrina Boyd-Surka visits the Neon Museum to find out what makes Len so interested in these signs and why he thinks their stories need to live on for future generations. He has such a wonderful perspective on dentistry technology and how more dentists should start thinking of their technology more as a marketing tool! He is General Manager of Dental Vertical at Birdeye, Dentist in Northeast Philly, Speaker, Consultant, Podcaster, and Author. I mean talk about a dentist who wears many hats. Dr. Len Tau enjoys helping dentists build a strong online reputation to help practices maximize growth! Chosen as one of the top leaders in dental consulting by Dentistry Today, Len Tau, DMD, has dedicated his professional life to improving dentistry for patients and other dentists. After purchasing his practice, the Pennsylvania Center for Dental Excellence in Philadelphia in 2007, Len practiced full-time while offering consulting to other dental practices, training thousands of dentists about reputation marketing, leading the dental division of BirdEye, a reputation marketing platform, and hosting the popular, Raving Patients podcast. He recently authored the book Raving Patients and the soon to be released 100 Tips to 100 Reviews in 100 Days. He is also the founder of Tau Dental Consulting, a firm that builds comprehensive marketing plans for dentist. In 2018, Len cut down to practicing dentistry two days per week to focus additional time and attention to helping other dentists build broad and compelling online footprints that attract hundreds of new patients to their practices. Len lectures nationally and internationally on using internet marketing, social media, and reputation marketing to make dental offices more visible and credible as well as how to increase their case acceptance. *Key Questions* 1. Diamond in the Ruff: what product did you use most in practice that's been a major advantage to helping with productivity and efficiency. Dr. Len highly recommends a UVC cleaning system light. Perfect for dental practices, as he mention. https://www.uvccleaningsystems.com/uvc-products/safezone.html His favorite piece of technology is the iTero. https://itero.com/ 2.No-Risk | No-Reward: What was your big investment of time or money in technology that paid off. In this episode, called "The Bassment Studios," I share with you another example of the type of mixtape that DJ Joey Mas and I used to produce in The Bassment Studios in Northeast Philly. This is the fifth and final tribute to DJ Joey Mas. The next several volumes will cover some of the best nightclubs I ever worked at. Then, I will share with you my time doing radio mixshows. Keep an eye out for them, or subscribe at iTunes so that you get them as soon as I put them up.. I have loved the e-mails I have been getting. Keep sending them to me at slybri102@yahoo.com and give me your questions, comments, or requests, or please take a moment to let me know you listened. In this episode, called "The Miami Bass and Freestyle Explosion," I give you exactly what the title says. This mix is a perfect example of what many of the mixtapes DJ Joey Mas and I used to make back in the day in the Bassment Studios in Northeast Philly. I had more fun making this podcast that I can ever explain, and I hope you have half as much fun listening to it as I did making it. The mixes, as always, are perfect. No trainwrecks here, unlike many of the other jokester podcasts I have listened to. Thanks for the many great e-mails. Keep sending them to me at slybri102@yahoo.com and give me your questions, comments, or requests. Many more people have downloaded my podcasts than I originally thought would, which I appreciate very much. The track list for this podcast is as follows: Techmaster P.E.B.
