With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I have a question for you: do the holidays make you feel more frazzled than festive? Well, then you're in the right place. Today, I'm breaking down 5 easy ways to keep stress in check over the holidays so you can actually enjoy the season for what it's meant to be: a time of joy, connection, and maybe just a little bit of Holiday magic. But before we jump in, let's talk about why this matters: Ladies, we already wear a hundred hats every day: leader, colleague, mom, partner, friend, and more. When you add holiday responsibilities to the mix—shopping, cooking, decorating, hosting—it can feel impossible to keep up. And what happens when you're stressed out?1. You miss the moments that matter most: Those precious times with your kids, your partner, or even a quiet moment by the fire? Gone in a blur of to-do lists. 2. Your health takes a hit: Stress weakens your immune system, disrupts your sleep, and can even lead to burnout. 3. Work becomes more overwhelming: End-of-year deadlines and holiday chaos can leave you feeling distracted and less productive at work, which only adds to the stress. This is not what the holidays are supposed to feel like, so let's change that together.1. Prioritize the Joy Stuff; 2. Plan Early and Often; 3. Delegate Like a Boss; 4. Say No to Things That Don't Serve You; 5. Make Time for Self-Care (Non-Negotiable!). Now, for details about all 5 of these action steps, tune in to today's episode! Here's the bottom line: You deserve to enjoy this season just as much as anyone else. The holidays should be a time to fill your cup, not empty it. Click HEREor read the letter in the Episode NotesPractical Tip: Pay particular attention to how grief and fear can give way to relief, clarity, what needs doing, and how to go about it. Ask yourself: “What is my job in this moment? What do I specifically have to offer? Where can I be of most use and service to others? How can I creatively, actively participate in pulling the arc of the moral universe toward justice for all?A tight bundle of sticks cannot be broken as easily as a single branch. We are in this together. Our lives are in our hands. More than ever before this is our opportunity to cherish life and work for it! Colorado Poet Laureate Andrea Gibson's Letter To A Friend After the ElectionBy Andrea GibsonNovember 16, 2024Architects of ChangeFriend,I am writing about the text you sent the morning after the election. “What do we do now?” you asked. My first response was to stare blankly at a blank wall for an hour. But I've had a week to sit with it, and here's what I want to share:Last April, after two years of chemotherapy, when my oncologist told me the cancer was now considered incurable, I felt the expected fear and grief. But something I didn't tell you was this—I also felt relief. Why relief? Because when I heard the system say, “We can't save you,” it was the first time since my diagnosis that I felt as if my life was in my hands. Watching the election, I felt something similar: grief, fear. Then this thought—Our lives are in our hands. They always were, but it's clearer than ever now.I think I've told you about my friend Liza. She was one of the most committed activists I've ever known. She built her life like an altar to social justice. She was also a Buddhist. A couple of weeks before her death, when asked how she wanted to be remembered, she said, “Just don't let anyone say I was the best at anything. It's so obnoxiously American.” As we look for creative paths forward, I want to beg “the left” to stop tearing each other to shreds over who is The Best at fighting for change. When we allow our egos to do our heart's work, what needs to get done doesn't get done. I understand that people are frantic for a clear and direct answer. But it's so important to choose curiosity over certainty in a moment that asks us to create something entirely new. This is that moment.I keep asking myself, “What is my job in this moment? What do I specifically have to offer?” It's empowering to ask those questions because no one's job will be the same. There were many years of my life that I did not feel I was actively participating in change unless I was in the streets protesting. As my health worsened, I knew that wasn't where I would be of most service. Creatively explore where you might be most useful. Throw a What's My Job party and explore the question with your community. Friends may reflect a specific talent or gift they see in you that you haven't yet recognized. My friend Oak, (great name, I know) used to say, “If we can't imagine it, we can't create it.” Right now I'm putting active energy into imagining what's possible. What does a compassionate world look like? What would it feel like to wake up every morning to a planet fueled by community and not capitalism? When I'm glued to my phone doom-scrolling the news, it's almost impossible for me to creatively imagine, but anytime I've got my feet in the grass I open in a new way. Even in a city, you can notice the way your body changes with the seasons. You can mirror the earth's steady and persistent pace. Save the seeds of an apple. Grow veggies in plant pots in the windowsill of your apartment. Feed a stranger. Drive a neighbor through the sunshine to a doctor's appointment in another state. Never forget how alone we are not. The moss, the mountains, the redwood tree, the marigold, the mourning dove calling for her love's return—are our allies. Every natural thing in this world is invested in the peace of this world. All that is good and gracious whispers, “We are with you.”I keep thinking about something I learned in my early 20's—the rural poor are more likely to survive a catastrophic world event than the wealthiest billionaires. It's really out of touch to use the word educated to refer solely to college-educated people. Everyone is educated in their own unique way and those of us who had the privilege of attending college are very often the least educated in regards to understanding that we are not just connected to nature, we are nature. To not know that is to be disconnected from our power source. Two decades ago, I was partnered with a journalist who was reporting on the invasion of Iraq and the occupation of the West Bank in Palestine. What she'd witnessed was horrific, but she was deeply struck by the gratitude of the people in comparison to those of us living in relative safety in the US. Since that time, I have understood that the most grateful people in the world are rarely those who appear to have the most to be grateful for. I hope we each feel a deep responsibility to be grateful for our lives through this time, to wholly cherish every morning we are alive to see the sun. I know the upcoming years will be challenging. But if the upcoming years are also cherished, they will be less challenging.I understand why so many people are sharing what they think we should be feeling right now. Though there is love at the heart of that demand, there is no such thing as a moral emotion. No one owes the world their misery. What we owe is our active participation in finding creative and compassionate paths forward. Every activist I have ever known who believed they owed the world their unhappiness has burned out. If we consciously fuel our joy, if we put our attention on the world's beauty, we will have far more strength and stamina to show up to the world's pain.We need stamina. The 73 million people who voted for Trump appear to be more energized than ever. And it's clear to me that the narrative that every Trump voter is “ignorant and hateful” is hurting our movements. 95% of our marginalized friends have at least one family member they deeply trust who voted for Trump this year. Most people, regardless of how they are voting, believe they are voting for a better world. There is a terrifying amount of hate in our country, yes. But there is far more fear. Hate is the end of a conversation. Fear isn't always. I've been on the lookout for moments when an honest and respectful conversation might reach the root of someone else's fear. These conversations can surface big emotions. A lot of what we're navigating right now can, so I've been thinking of ways we can come together to build inner resilience. There is so much we can learn from each other in regards to working with difficult emotions to minimize the time we are undone by them. I'll say it more bluntly—we can't be chronically destroyed by microaggressions and also be people who can organize around the violent deportation of millions of our community members or any other inhumane cruelty expected. This moment in history isn't only about rooting in our values, it's about rooting in our tenacity, courage, and strength. Here's to our tenacity, courage, and strength, friend. I know so much feels heavy right now. It is heavy. But never forget that our hearts are community gardens. I think we'll all start seeing how much we have on our side once we each begin to see how much we have to give.Love, Andrea Originally published November 14, 2024 in “Things That Don't Suck: One Poet's Quest to Uncover What Shifts When We Shift our Attention.”You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. How does a routine “nightly drive” turn into the defense's most head-scratching alibi? As the two-year mark approaches in the brutal murders of four college students in Moscow, the case against the accused, Brian Werner, keeps unfolding in frustratingly slow motion. With the trial still a year away, the evidence piles up—DNA on a knife sheath, cell data aligning too conveniently, and an alibi that could've been ripped from the pages of “Things That Don't Hold Up in Court.” Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI Special Agent, discusses how defense tactics like delay and doubt might be their only winning hand. But despite every effort to paint a picture of doubt, the details remain damning. Could one impulsive, bitter grudge have driven an alleged killer to such horrific acts, or is there more that we don't yet know about this case that'll change everything? #MoscowMurders #TrueCrime #BrianWerner #IdahoMurders #UnresolvedCases #TrialDelay #BehavioralAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? [SEGMENT 2-1] October surprises 1 We are more than halfway through the month of October and only a few weeks away from the 2024 Presidential Election. What "October Surprises" await the candidates? The term "October Surprise" refers to a political event or scandal strategically revealed just before an election to sway voters. The term originated in the 1970s and became widely used during the 1980 presidential campaign, when allegations were made that the Reagan campaign had negotiated with Iran to delay the release of American hostages until after the election, damaging Jimmy Carter's chances of reelection. Since then, October surprises have included dramatic revelations aimed at influencing the outcome of presidential or midterm elections. When it comes to Trump, I can report that there will be no October surprises. As Trump said the other night when interviewed by Harris Faulkner, I've been investigated more than Alfonse Capone, in reference to the infamous crime boss. And all the historical nonsense has been played; and no, https://theblacksphere.net/2024/10/exposed-the-so-called-racist-acts-of-donald-trump/. And what of JD Vance? As it turns out, he's not "weird" as he proved in his debate destruction of Tim Walz. In fact, Vance is cleaner than a preacher's sheets. So this pretty much leaves only the https://theblacksphere.net/2024/10/the-october-surprise-republicans-plan-for-harris/. And as I've opined, that party has lots of potential scandals. Based on historical precedent and current vulnerabilities within the Democratic Party, below is my analysis of potential October surprises that could still occur: 1. Walz History of Lies and Sexual Misconduct [X] SB – Trump on Tim Walz at the Al Smith Dinner Governor Tim Walz has the charm of a cardboard cutout, but he really wants to be liked. Democrats present him as Mr. Midwest Joe, but it's fallen short as Walz appears more like big brother to Chris Farley. But sadly for the Democrats, Walz doesn't have that Farley feel when it comes to help his ticket. The man who tried to paint JD Vance as "weird" appears to be covering for his own weirdness. Will https://theblacksphere.net/2024/10/did-tim-walz-get-caught-in-another-lie/ that could damage Walz public persona. Short answer: likely. If rumors of sexual misconduct persist, you can bet the Democrats will be scrambling big city fire department going to a five-alarm. Credible https://countylocalnews.com/2024/10/12/shocking-allegations-tim-walz-accused-of-assaulting-high-school-football-player/ have emerged against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz regarding "sexual misconduct during his time as a high school football coach. According to these claims, Walz is accused of sexually assaulting a student and taking the victim to a gay bar during his coaching career. These serious accusations, which first gained traction on social media, have prompted calls for an investigation, although they remain allegations without substantiated proof at this time." The https://countylocalnews.com/2024/10/12/explosive-walz-accused-of-sxual-assault-and-gy-bar-scandal-during-coaching-career/ has stirred up considerable public outrage and discussion, with some questioning the trust placed in individuals in positions of authority, like Walz, and calling for accountability if the allegations are proven true. Walz, who has previously worked as a teacher and coach before transitioning to politics, has not yet publicly addressed these specific claims, but investigations are reportedly ongoing [SEGMENT 2-2] October surprises 2 2. Kamala Harris' Crooked Brother-in-Law Tony West, Kamala Harris' brother-in-law and currently Uber's Chief Legal Officer, has been a controversial figure recently due to his past work with the U.S. Department of Justice. In the spirit of Leftists helping Leftists and hurting the country, West was involved in facilitating significant settlements with large corporations, particularly banks. He committed his skullduggery during the Obama era. Instead of ensuring the settlement funds went to impacted individuals or the U.S. Treasury, West fhttps://www.allsides.com/news/2024-08-27-1353/politics-kamala-s-brother-law-fleeced-taxpayers-billions-give-left-wing-groups to left-leaning NGOs and activist groups. While his actions may have been framed as legal, they don't appear to be ethical. Moreover, West is accused of enriching political allies and advancing progressive agendas using taxpayer money. In effect, West provided "legalized money laundering" for leftist causes. And in his role he diverted billions of dollars were diverted away from public coffers to non-governmental organizations supporting left-wing political activities. 3. Doug Emhoff's Rage and Other Dalliances Ah, Doug Emhoff—the First Gentleman of Things That Don't Matter But Might. While he's generally managed to stay in the background, stories arose of Emhoff hitting a former girlfriend due to jealousy. If a story grows about him raging like a toddler denied a Happy Meal, it could turn Harris' already-awkward PR game into a nightmare. Emhoff appeared in various media recently calling the incident a "distraction" from his wife's campaign. Frankly, given Harris' campaign trajectory, she could use a distraction. The lesson for Democrats is don't try to make a wife-beater and nanny-f*cker a paragon of virtue and poster child for honorable manhood. 4. Kamala Harris Plagiarism If you thought Joe Biden had the monopoly on plagiarism, think again. Kamala Harris has a history of, shall we say, "borrowing" phrases like a broke college student borrows quarters on laundry day. Although Harris' plagiarism surprises no one, it doesn't help her tarnished image of being a one-trick phrase pony. By this time even Harris seems to have sickened of her "I was born into a middle-class family" schtick. Further, consider the plagiarism of her ascension. Harris wants people to believe she rose to prominence due to hard work. However, she plagiarized the life of millions of skanks before her, then presents herself as a middle-class Horatio Alger. And if you are of the ilk that Harris has an original thought, I suggest you remove her teleprompter then time hos quickly her mouth stops moving. Don't be surprised to learn that Harris has never had an original thought. By the way, is that her teleprompter or did she lift it from Joe Biden? [SEGMENT 2-3] October surprises 3 5. J6 Committee Corruption and Liz Cheney Liz Cheney's obsession with January 6th was like watching someone lose themselves in a soap opera. In this particular soap, in a sea of bad guys, Liz Cheney played the role of the righteous villain. And October has already revealed much about her. As it turns out, Cheney (and the committee) hid evidence, manipulated testimony, or ran a partisan hit-job. And the Republicans have the receipts. In what was already a political career in shambles, Cheney may have provided Republicans the final nail for her coffin. And what about Harris trotting the crooked old girl out for campaign points? Talk about dropping a political turd grenade. Cheney has gone from self-proclaimed savior of democracy to just another Uniparty politician who sold out for the limelight and a couple of New York Times headlines. 6. Election Cheating Verified Hardly an October surprise, election cheating in almost all significant states have been verified. Still, Americans learn almost daily of the shenanigans Democrats pulled to fraudulently appoint Biden as president. But what if suddenly we get even more undeniable proof of election fraud that "hits 'em where the good Lord split them"? Even now, Democrats plot to keep Republicans from removing dead people and even self-proclaimed non-citizens from the voter roles. For a group of people who claim to want election integrity, Democrats fight very hard not to see it achieved. The public is well-aware of what happened in 2020 and the willful election tampering happening with Democrats. This will be their downfall, as Trump is now seen as far less of a boogeyman, particularly when compared to King Kamala. Expect even more revelations, which will help the people who show up to vote pull the Right lever. 7. Biden Family Corruption While Republicans are certainly taking their sweet time, the specter of a Biden family corruption reveal lingers. Let's not forget that Hunter Biden copped a plea, and we await his sentencing. Ironically, Hunter Biden's laptop started this mess for the Biden family, the Biden DOJ, and the Democrats and other minions who helped in the "Russian conspiracy" coverup. If Republicans choose to make the Biden an October surprise, it would certainly reflect on the entirety of the Left. They shoved all in long ago, as the FBI withheld Hunter's laptop, then the media and social media started the "misinformation" spin. Change Trump for Biden and we'd know all about the crimes of the century and how a president sold out his country. Worse, he used his drug-addicted son to manage the enterprise. As Biden would quip, "Not a joke". Will Republicans allow one "FJB!" leading into the final days? [SEGMENT 2-4] October surprises 4 8. Democrat Fundraising Scandal with ActBlue If ActBlue ends up exposed as the shady ATM everyone suspects it is, Democrats are going to have a fundraising crisis on their hands. James O'Keefe exposed the illegal tactics of this Democrat money-laundering machine posing as a fundraising arm. And the evidence is as clear as the cheating in the 2020 election and the farce of J6. But in what Americans have learned over the past 8 years, the truth doesn't necessarily matter. You're probably getting bombarded with all sorts of tips, tricks, hacks, wellness gadgets, fit tech gizmos, supplements, overly restrictive diets, and unnecessarily complex fitness programs that will promise to help us “be good” and “stay healthy” this holiday season. We've shared episodes in the past focused on nutrition and fitness strategies around the holidays. So, I'd like to offer you something a bit different this year. The winner of the first Women's World Poetry Slam, Gibson has gone on to be awarded the LGBTQ Out100 and has been featured on BBC, NPR and CSpan. Gibson is the author of seven award winning books and seven full length albums. Their live shows have become loving and supportive ecosystems for audiences to feel seen, heard, and held through Gibson's art. You Better Be Lightning (2021) by Andrea Gibson is a queer, political, and feminist collection guided by self-reflection.The poems range from close examination of the deeply personal to the vastness of the world, exploring the expansiveness of the human experience from love to illness, from space to climate change, and so much more in between. You Better Be Lightning is winner of the Independent Publisher Book Award, Feathered Quill Book Award, American Library Association Over the Rainbow, Colorado Book Award & Goodreads Choice Finalist. https://buttonpoetry.com/product/you-better-be-lightning/ Things That Don't Suck (Substack) - It's common to look around and take inventory of what sucks. Greetings from the beautiful Bali, where I'm currently enjoying a much-needed vacation. But what makes this vacation even more special? It's knowing that back home, my law firm continues to engage and secure new clients, thanks to a well-structured, automated law firm marketing plan. Welcome to another episode of our law firm marketing podcast, designed especially for you - whether you're an owner of a small-to-medium law firm or a lawyer with the ambition to start your practice. This podcast is your companion on that journey. In the last episode, "7 Things That Don't Work When It Comes to Your Law Firm's Digital Marketing", we explored strategies that have proven less than fruitful in today's digital marketing landscape. Now, let's discuss the strategies that do work, that should be part of your marketing plan for a law firm: 1. Google Ads: Our journey begins with a powerhouse player – Google Ads. Here's a law firm marketing plan example from my own experience: we run a well-oiled law firm marketing funnel on Google Ads, which consistently brings in a stream of clients. Don't fret about getting into the nitty-gritty of it - outsourcing to a reliable agency can save you time and stress. But the golden rule? Strategy, mates! You gotta have the right one. We'll begin by diving into Google Ads, a resource that can drive a consistent flow of clients to your firm when used correctly. 2. Content Marketing: Wondering how to make a law firm marketing plan that speaks directly to your ideal client? Say g'day to content marketing. Picture this - you're delivering value, becoming an industry guru, and boosting your SEO all at once. Whether it's a podcast, blog, or video, keep it fresh and regular, and watch your brand skyrocket. Moving on, we will discuss the power of content marketing and how it can be used to connect with your ideal clients. 3. SEO and Website Visibility: Next on our list of law firm marketing ideas is ensuring you're visible. That means the front page of Google, is not buried in the back. SEO's the name of the game here, but it's a tricky beast. You need the right experts on board to keep you sailing smoothly in these competitive waters. We'll stress the importance of website visibility and how essential SEO is to ensure your firm lands on the front page of Google search results. 4. Social Media: Social media can be a treasure trove of potential clients if you know how to navigate. Remember, not all platforms will yield gold for every practice area. Be smart, go where your clients are. We'll navigate the various social media platforms and provide tips on how to target your marketing efforts effectively. 5. Online Reviews and Reputation Management: Lastly, we touch on the power of Google reviews. A good review is like a glowing endorsement that not only boosts your SEO but also provides hard-to-beat social proof. And if you do hit a rough patch with a negative review, no worries! We'll guide you on how to turn that around into an opportunity. We'll look into the significance of online reviews, especially Google reviews, and how to manage them effectively. Now, if you want to dive deeper into all these topics, head over to the Scalable Business Lounge, where we've got over 40 masterclasses stacked up and we break down the ins and outs of law firm marketing strategy template and other essential topics. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: “My Model Of EA Burnout” (Logan Strohl), published by will on February 3, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. (Linkposting with permission from the author, Logan Strohl. Below, my - Will's - excerpted summary of the post precedes the full text. The first person speaker is Logan.) Summary I think that EA burnout usually results from prolonged dedication to satisfying the values you think you should have, while neglecting the values you actually have. Perhaps your true values just happen to exactly match the central set of EA values, and that is why you are an EA. However, I think it's much more common for people to be EAs because their true values have some overlap with the EA values; and I think it's also common for EAs to dramatically overestimate the magnitude of that overlap. According to my model, this is why “EA burnout” is a thing. If I am wrong about what I value, then I will miss-manage my motivational resources. Chronic mismanagement of motivational resources results in some really bad stuff. Over a couple of years, I change my career, my friend group, and my hobbies to reflect my new values. I spend as little time as possible on Things That Don't Matter, because now I care about Impact. I've oriented my whole life around The Should Values for my longtermist EA strategy [...] while neglecting my True Values. As a result, my engines of motivation are hardly ever receiving any fuel. It seems awfully important to me that EAs put fuel into their gas tanks, rather than dumping that fuel onto the pavement where fictional cars sit in their imaginations. It is probably possible to recover even from severe cases of EA burnout. I think I've done a decent job of it myself, though there's certainly room for improvement. But it takes years. My advice to my past self would be: First, know who you are. If you're in this for the long haul, build a life in which the real you can thrive. And then, from the abundance of that thriving, put the excess toward Impact. Full Text (Probably somebody else has said most of this. But I personally haven't read it, and felt like writing it down myself, so here we go.) I think that EA burnout usually results from prolonged dedication to satisfying the values you think you should have, while neglecting the values you actually have. I recognize that GCR is a direct threat to The Wellbeing Of Others and to Personal Longevity, and as I do, I get scared. I get scared in a way I have never been scared before, because I've never before taken seriously the possibility that everyone might die, leaving nobody to continue the species or even to remember that we ever existed—and because this new perspective on the future of humanity has caused my own personal mortality to hit me harder than the lingering perspective of my Christian upbringing ever allowed. For the first time in my life, I'm really aware that I, and everyone I will ever care about, may die. My fear has me very focused on just two of my values: The Wellbeing Of Others and Personal Longevity. But as I read, think, and process, I realize that pretty much regardless of what my other values might be, they cannot possibly be satisfied if the entire species—or the planet, or the lightcone—is destroyed. Ok, so let's talk now about what “values” are. I think that in humans at least, values are drives to action. They are things that motivate a person to choose one possible action over another. If I value loyalty over honesty, I'll readily lie to help my friend save face; if I value both about equally, I may be a little paralyzed in some situations while I consult the overall balance of my whole value system and try to figure out what to do. When I go for a hike with my field kit of watercolor paints, I tend to feel really good about that decision as I make it, as I hike and paint, and also as I look back on the experienc...

Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My Model Of EA Burnout, published by LoganStrohl on January 25, 2023 on LessWrong. (Probably somebody else has said most of this. But I personally haven't read it, and felt like writing it down myself, so here we go.) I think that EA burnout usually results from prolonged dedication to satisfying the values you think you should have, while neglecting the values you actually have. Setting aside for the moment what “values” are and what it means to “actually” have one, suppose that I actually value these things (among others): True Values Abundance Power Novelty Social Harmony Beauty Growth Comfort The Wellbeing Of Others Excitement Personal Longevity Accuracy One day I learn about “global catastrophic risk”: Perhaps we'll all die in a nuclear war, or an AI apocalypse, or a bioengineered global pandemic, and perhaps one of these things will happen quite soon. [This is, of course, a version of EA that's especially focused on the far future; but I think it's common for a very similar thing to happen when someone transitions from “soup kitchens” to “global poverty and animal welfare”. There's an exponential increase in stakes, accompanied by a corresponding increase in the fear of lost value.] So I reason that a new life strategy is called for. Over time, under the influence of my “Accuracy” value as well as my “Social Harmony” value (since I'm now surrounded by people who are thinking about this stuff), I come to believe that I should value the following: Should Values Impact Calibration Openness Collaboration Empiricism The Wellbeing Of Others Personal Longevity (The values on this new list with an asterisk beside them have a correlate on the original list (impactpower, collaborationsocial harmony, empiricismaccuracy), but these new values are routed through The New Strategy, and are not necessarily plugged into their correlates from the first list.) Over a couple of years, I change my career, my friend group, and my hobbies to reflect my new values. I spend as little time as possible on Things That Don't Matter, because now I care about Impact, and designing computer games has very little Impact since it takes a lot of time and definitely doesn't save the world (even though it's pretty good on novelty, beauty, growth, and excitement). If not, it’s time to figure out what you want and set goals to get there. I had the opportunity to sit down with longtime Academy member Pam Hook to talk about the goals she has for her life and business. Here’s a hint: One always affects the other. Then, we’ll grab a pen and some paper to journal through what this looks like in our own lives and businesses. Are You Chasing the Wrong Goals in Your Life? One of the most common questions I get is about goal setting: How do I know what goals to set? We get ideas in our head about how we want to grow or what we want to learn, so we set a goal. But here's the problem: It might be a goal that’s great for someone else, but it doesn't mean it's the right goal for you. If you want to know where to get direction for your goals, you need to start by answering one simple question: What do you want? Your answer to this question will determine your goals. When you start to visualize where you want to be and what you want your life to look like, that informs the goals you set to get there. Here’s the truth: If you don’t define your finish line, you’ll never cross it. If you don’t take the time to set goals for your life, you’ll end up living your entire life pursuing someone else’s version of success. Stop Focusing on Things That Don’t Matter I’m so excited because Pam Hook, one of our longtime Business Boutique Academy members, is joining me on the show today to talk about goal setting. Pam and I got to sit knee to knee and dig into her goals. At the end of the session, Pam was able to go home with more clarity on the next right steps for her life and her small business. Here are a few takeaways that might resonate with you too: Your business goals and spiritual goals aren’t separate goals. One always affects the other. You can do anything, but you can’t do everything. You have to say no to some things in order to say yes to the right things. Can You Answer This Difficult Question? Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. —Psalm 37:4 (ESV) What's so beautiful about this verse is that it reminds us that as we seek Him, get to know Him, and lean into Him, He will show us what the desires of our hearts are. He will open your eyes to things you didn't even know you wanted, to goals you didn't even consider, and to dreams that never crossed your mind before. He will do that because He loves you, and He has good plans for you. As we look to God, seek Him, and stay connected to Him, He shows us more of who we are and who He called us to be. He shows us the life He created us to live and the plans that He has for us. Remember: It's not on your shoulders to have it all figured out. Take some time to write down your answers to these questions as you process and put this into practice: How do you feel about what you want? Is it hard or easy to answer the question: What do you want? How does it feel to consider that God cares about what you want? What do you want? Write down the things that come to mind, the dreams that swell up in your heart, and the ideas in your head.

How to get rich by being cheap Wealthy people can buy anything and everything they want, right? While that might be true, it doesn’t mean the rich are out there dropping bills left and right. In fact, they can be quite frugal Impulse Buys Sure, it might be enticing to snag the cashmere sweater in the store window or the newest car on the lot. But making a purchase on a whim is something you will never see a wealthy person do. “If you buy things you do not need,” billionaire investor Warren Buffet told Forbes, “soon you will have to sell things you need.” It doesn’t mean millionaires don’t buy lavish items, they just put thought into them and their bottom line before swiping their credit card. 2. Extreme Inheritances It’s fantasy to think we can all leave a mountain of money to our children and grandchildren, so they don’t have to budget as we did. But large inheritances are something rich people don’t use their money for. Why? Well, Bill Gatesand Mark Zuckerberg both said they want their children to find their way rather than relying on a handout, according to CNBC. Instead, both billionaires are giving significant portions of their fortunes to charity to help those who need it most. 3. TV Channels and Video Games Rich people didn’t amass their fortune sitting around staring at a screen all day. That’s why they don’t waste money on jumbo TV packages or the latest video games. “We expected high-income households to own more devices, but we did not anticipate that low-income consumers of all devices had greater usage,” says Glenn Enoch, Nielson’s SVP of Audience Insights. 4. Luxury Brands Millionaires can afford the latest fashions from the top designers, but that doesn’t mean they’re spending their hard-earned money on high-end apparel. In fact, the founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, told Newsweek that he doesn’t wear anything that is not from a flea market to “set a good example,” and Bill Gates told Time that he still wears a $10 watch despite being able to afford a closet full of Rolexes. 5. An Over-Priced Home Although their home-buying budget is considerably higher, rich people still look for deals. According to U.S. News and World Report, Warren Buffett still lives in the home he bought in 1958 for $31,500. 6. Buying Instead of Renting Some rich folks are going so far as to not even deal with the hassle of buying a home. Many are opting to rent, according to Extra’s Mansions and Millionaires host Michael Corbett. 7. Pricey Grooming Everyone needs a trim once in a while, but some famous rich people don’t think it warrants whipping out the wallet. 8. Multiple Credit Cards It’s understandable that a wealthy person might not want to walk around with a ton of cash in their pocket. But don’t think for a second that their wallet is filled with a credit card from every bank. 9. Late Fees No one likes to pay pesky late fees when they miss a bill or payment, especially rich people. 10. Things That Don’t Last Even if rich people have the money to replace an item that wears out or breaks, they still don’t want to waste their money that way. 11. Stuff Over Experiences Research has shown that money and material things can generate only so much happiness. Instead, it’s meaningful experiences that lead to a truly fulfilling life. 12. Retirement Now, look: No one is going to advise you against investing money in your retirement fund. But for rich people, retirement isn’t a focus mostly because self-made billi --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/4dmbox/support
Veel liefde voor muziek vandaag met zanger/gitarist Johannes Genard die met zijn band School is Cool op 6 maart een geweldige nieuwe plaat Things That Don’t Go Right uitbrengt .
