On this episode of Money Grows on Trees: the Podcast, host Lloyd Ross delves into the concept of Leading vs Lagging Indicators. The key point highlighted is the importance of focusing on specific actions rather than directly focusing on the result. Lloyd emphasizes that many people tend to prioritize lagging indicators such as weight loss or finding love, instead of focusing on the leading indicators that lead to those outcomes. Love is described as a lagging indicator, meaning that it requires positioning oneself to meet someone compatible before falling in love. Lloyd suggests that dating is the leading indicator of love and urges listeners to take action by going on multiple dates to increase the probability of finding someone with similar values. Money is another lagging indicator, often causing a struggle for those who prioritize it. Your Millionaire Money Mentor emphasizes that putting money first leads to little success, and instead, suggests focusing on developing skills and taking action to earn money. Weight loss is discussed as another lagging indicator, highlighting that the leading indicators of weight loss are healthy eating, exercise, and self-care. The importance of friendship is also emphasized, mentioning that friendship is a lagging indicator resulting from actively seeking social opportunities. Throughout the episode, Your Millionaire Money Mentor provides examples of both lagging and leading indicators in various contexts, such as inflation in the economy and the importance of developing skills for generating money. Lloyd urges listeners to prioritize leading indicators by focusing on actions and skills that can lead to success. Life of the School Podcast: The Podcast for Biology Teachers
We Introduced ourselves with our goofy question: You have your own late night talk show, who would you want to be your band leader? Tanea: Nyaze - my musical buddy from college Ryan: Hands down, Tim Blais from A Capella Science. He is a musical genius. Lee: real talk, I’d want Ryan Reardon to be my bandleader. Aaron: Jazz Saxaphonist Grace Kelly Define end of course exams: Wikipedia says “The End of Course Test is an academic assessment conducted in many states by the State Board of Education.” I consider AP Exams, SAT Subject area tests to be EOC exams as well. Other Examples? What are the advantages of End-Of-Course Exams for your students? Ryan: It is a way to demonstrate mastery on an assessment common across multiple classrooms, so that student results can be compared Lee: At the AP and IB level, it is an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the skills and knowledge gained from participating in the course all year long. They can demonstrate that they are potentially ready for university level work. Tanea: They look competitive, and can show they are likely prepared for college. Aaron: Could be a confidence builder… particularly if they have struggled and then demonstrate success. In very competitive schools, they can also build confidence for students that think of themselves as “average” Thinking about our lens of inequity, what are the issues with End-Of-Course Exams for your students? Other concerns? Lee: in a normal year, the pace is such that we end up teaching to a test rather than teaching kids to really love the scientific process. There seems to be a focus more on test taking skills rather than scientific thinking skills. Ryan: EOCs do not take into consideration local factors such as socioeconomic status, access to resources, special education services, etc. Additionally, measurement using an exam precludes performance standards, which are key for a well-rounded science education Tanea: The schedule doesn’t allow the time for students to really enjoy the science, and it becomes more about memorization and getting into a good school. Aaron: In an academic culture dominated by fixed mindset thinking, EOCs can be used to limit a student’s options. Students define themselves as being either good at something or bad at something. If they perceive themselves as bad at science, they won’t take an AP science course. If they do poorly in an AP Science course, they then label themselves bad at science. We would love feedback! Zico Coronel, Reimagining Scouting Reports, and Analogies in Coaching Guest: Zico Coronel, New Zealand Professional Coach In this week’s basketball coaching conversation, New Zealand professional coach Zico Coronel joins the podcast to talk about visiting the Houston Rockets, reimaging scouting reports, and using analogies in coaching. Coronel is in his second season as the head coach of the Taylor Hawks in the New Zealand National Basketball League (NBL). In his first season he lead the Hawks to 12 wins and a semi-final berth. This was a drastic improvement as the previous three years the Hawks won 10 games combined. Prior to becoming head coach of the Taylor Hawks, Coronel served as an assistant coach to the Wellington Saints. There he was the assistant coach to Kevin Braswell who is also head coach of the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL. ITALIAN Rachel: Hai bisogno di qualcosa dal supermercato? Carlotta: No, no, dai, non ti preoccupare. Rachel: Macché! Tanto, oggi vado al supermercato comunque. Have you ever heard an expression like the one above that starts with “tanto?” You might already know that “tanto” means “a lot” but obviously in this case, that translation doesn’t make much sense. I hear all the time that this sentence structure is confusing! So what does “tanto” mean when used this way? It’s simple, so let me demystify it for you. In this example, “tanto” is used a bit like, “really,” “anyways,” or “as” in English. So for example, in the previous dialogue, the conversation might have looked something like this: ENGLISH Rachel: Do you need something from the supermarket? Carlotta: No, no, come on, don’t worry about it. Rachel: Nonsense! Really, I was going to the supermarket today regardless. Other Examples of “Tanto” 1.) 7.) Perchè piangi? Tanto ormai il guaio è fatto! Using “tanto” like this is a very common expression, but at times it's difficult to translate for English speakers since the definition isn’t precise. However, thinking about it in terms of “anyways”, “as” or “really” in English can help you make sense of everyday conversations in Italy. Another Way to Use Tanto When the nouns of a sentence are the same, you use il comparativo di ugualianza, or the comparative of equality. To do this, you can use a few different forms: — (così)…come – This is used for adjectives and adverbs; così is in parenthesis because you don’t always have to add it. — (tanto)…quanto – This is used for nouns or adverbs; tanto is in parenthesis because you don’t always have to add it. Esempi — La torta al cioccolato è (tanto) buona come la torta alla vaniglia. – The chocolate cake is as good as the vanilla cake. — I ragazzi giocano (tanto) a calcio quanto a basket. – The kids play just as much soccer as they do basketball. While threatening weather might send other outdoor painters packing up, Asheville artist Cheryl Keefer is drawn to paint those rainy day landscapes and city scapes. In fact, a delightful segment of this interview is hearing Cheryl laugh about a recent time she started painting with good intentions to "branch out" by depicting a sunny day. With a BS in Art Education and an MA in art history, Cheryl talks about having a long career in teaching, although not as a traditional art teacher. Now that she has moved to Asheville in retirement, she is able to devote herself to her longstanding love of painting, creating her work both plein air (outdoors) and at her studio in the River Arts District at Northlight Studios. The Divine Comedy. In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison discuss the classic work of literature The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and its relevance to the Star Trek universe. Dante's semi-autobiographical, mythical tale of a redemptive and self-reflective journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, led by the poet Virgil (Dante's symbol of human reason) and the lady Beatrice (Dante's symbol of divine love), has become an archetypal metaphor for going astray and being led back to one's true path. Many characters in the Star Trek universe have gone astray, whether literally as in the case of the Voyager crew lost in the Delta Quadrant, or metaphorically as in the case of characters with deep personal struggles, such as Wesley Crusher, Worf, and Benjamin Sisko. These and other Star Trek characters who have gone astray are frequently visited by quasi-mystical messengers, analogous to Virgil and Beatrice in The Divine Comedy, who lead them on a journey and back to their own true and unique paths. Hermeneutics in Star Trek. Hermeneutics is the art and science of meaning and textual interpretation. In this episode of Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison discuss issues of meaning and interpretation in Star Trek. That is quite a title. Why did this paper stimulate such a buzz? You suggest that autoimmune disease is a “modern epidemic” and that rates of autoimmune disease have quadrupled in the last fifty years. What are some of the reasons for that? In your publications, including the one mentioned above, you bring up several specific hypotheses related to why autoimmune diseases have become so prevalent in the Western industrialized countries. I would like to ask you specifically about some of them, including: – Molecular mimicry – Hygiene Hypothesis – Stealth Infections My understanding is that some people are being diagnosed with celiac disease that do not have the genes. Are we seeing a turn in the tide? Are people without some sort of genes toward autoimmunity now becoming autoimmune? Do you use soil-based probiotics in your autoimmune patients? On the topic of stealth infections, why aren't more doctors testing for and picking up on these infections? Do you empirically put your autoimmune patients on antibiotics for infections you know are associated with these diseases, or do you first treat them with the standard functional medicine approach (an elimination diet, healing the gut, dealing with toxins, and treating any obvious infections)? A few months ago a paper was circulating that pointed to salt as a stimulant for autoimmune disease. Is sea salt a concern, or is it simply salt from packaged foods that is a problem? Or is the problem caused by an imbalance in sodium and potassium? Finally, where do you practice? How can people find more information about you and this fascinating topic? It’s the “Schwapisode” this week! Hosts Phil Thompson and Eric Armstrong get right into the middle of things (or at least, into the middle of the vowel space) to talk about the mid-central vowel, the most popular vowel in the English language.Show Notes:Schwa, the term: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwa#The_term " The word schwa is from the Hebrew word shva (שְׁוָא shewa’, /ʃəˈwa/, modern pronunciation: shva /ʃva/), which designates the Hebrew niqqud vowel sign shva,” “that in modern Hebrew indicates either the phoneme /e/ or the complete absence of a vowel. Also the Hebrew shva is sometimes represented by the upside-down e symbol for Schwa, a misleading transliteration, since the Schwa vowel is not representative of modern Hebrew pronunciation of shva and is not characteristic of earlier pronunciations either (see Tiberian vocalization → Mobile Shwa = Shwa na'). The spelling "schwa" is German in origin."From the online etymology dictionary: lit. "emptiness."Schwa is [uh] the [uh] sound that many [uh] English speakers use as a [uh] filler sound.
