Today I am chatting with one of my absolute favorite writers, the one and only Gretchen Rubin, about her forthcoming book Secrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex Lives, which comes out April 1. Gretchen writes here about the lessons she's learned to making life more meaningful and satisfying, covering areas as wide ranging as self-improvement, adventure, the challenge of love, friendship, work, creativity, procrastination, tough decisions, pain, desire, getting it wrong, and consequences. The book teaches us, or reteaches us, about aphorisms, which Gretchen explains in today's episode; we also talk about happiness, which is one of Gretchen's chief topics she writes about, and she writes in the book that as to there being a so-called “secret to happiness” that “there's no one best way—we each have to figure it out for ourselves.” In addition to happiness, much of Gretchen's work centers around human nature and habits; we talk about her latest book but also some of her past work, too, as well as her #Read25in25 challenge, which I love. In addition to being a prolific writer, Gretchen is also an avid reader, and I hope by now she's read the book I recommended to her on the show. You are probably already deeply familiar with her work—she's written New York Times bestsellers like The Happiness Project, The Four Tendencies, Better Than Before, Outer Order Inner Calm, and Life in Five Senses, for starters—and she's also a podcaster, hosting the top-ranked and award-winning “Happier with Gretchen Rubin.” Gretchen is one of the most forefront thought leaders out there today, and her books have sold a whopping 3.5 million copies worldwide and have been translated to more than 30 languages. Interestingly, Gretchen started her career in law, and realized she wanted to be a writer while she was clerking for none other than Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. I can't wait for you to hear what Gretchen has to say.Secrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex Lives by Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen Rubin - The Key to Happiness Is Knowing Yourself | Brought to you by Babbel (https://babbel.com/passionstruck and Trade Coffee (https://drinktrade.com/passionstruck). Gretchen Rubin is an expert on understanding human nature and being able to explain complex emotional topics in easy-to-digest ways. She is the author of the New York Times bestsellers, The Happiness Project, Better Than Before, Outer Order Inner Calm, and Happier at Home. Gretchen has an enormous readership, both in print and online, and her books have sold almost three and a half million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. The Key to Happiness is Knowing Yourself On her popular weekly podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin, she discusses good habits and happiness with her sister Elizabeth Craft; they've been called the “Click and Clack of podcasters.” Fast Company named Gretchen to its list of Most Creative People in Business, and she's a member of Oprah's SuperSoul 100. She's been interviewed by Oprah, walked arm-in-arm with the Dalai Lama, and eaten dinner with Daniel Kahneman. On the Passion Struck podcast I discuss with Gretchen the life lessons she learned clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. How during that clerkship she realized that her purpose was to become a writer and not a lawyer. How the study of human nature became her purpose and the key to knowing yourself. The difference between happiness and being happy. Her views on how negative experiences influence our happiness. The importance of decluttering our lives and why doing so brings us more joy, building habits, the key role they play in building happiness and so much more. In this episode, I talk about how at this time of the year, I always feel the itch to clean/organize my house, and thanks to two of my favorite experts on organizing/cleaning, Gretchen Rubin, author of Outer Order Inner Calm (and many other excellent books) and Marie Kondo, I know a bit more about why it helps me feel better and how to get started. A few key tips: 1) if you can do a task in under a minute, never wait to do it (this lets things pile up- think throwing your clothes in the laundry basket, going through the mail and recycling junk mail/looking through catalogs, etc., and washing 1 dish after you eat lunch), 2) don't get overwhelmed, just do 1 thing at a time (1 drawer at a time, 1 part of 1 closet, etc.), and 3) remember that Outer Order Contributes to Inner Calm- if you are feeling frazzled, is it because your house/apartment/room/living space is a mess? In this episode, I also mention Leo Babauta, author of a minimalist blog called ZenHabits(https://zenhabits.net) that I followed for many years. Action item: find one thing from this episode that I mention and try to put it into action this week! Happy spring break for those who have it!

Show notes & links available here. In this episode, my friend Sara Kuljis and I are back together talking about uncluttering our schedules and our homes. Sara and her husband Steve Kuljis are the owners and directors of Yosemite Sierra Summer Camp and Emerald Cove Day Camp. Sara is also a certified Gallup Strengths Coach. Sara and I have been friends for two decades, and she has been a regular guest on the podcast talking in past episodes about strengths, sibling conflicts & relationships, gratitude, how to compliment our kids, grit, and more. Together we also do a live parenting workshop. Big Ideas Uncluttering our Schedules Look back at past events that family members enjoyed and identify what was special about those experiences to help you determine what your family values. Talk about people or families you admire and why you admire them. Use their example to inspire your family's values or actions. Look at your calendar of activities to see which ones support your values. Note where the gaps of downtime are so that you can make time for activities that move your values forward. Consider using the values worksheet to assess what you value most individually or as a family. If your kids are younger, select one or two to focus on for a season or year. Some questions to consider: What are our family values? What are the things we hope our family is known for? Try to identify two 0r three characteristics or values you'd like to be hallmarks of your family. What are qualities we want to develop? If you want to do a deeper dive into your family values, consider downloading Sara's Family Pace & Space worksheet (also available in the resource section of Happy Campers). Consider coming up with a short family motto or song that represents something that's important to you. One of Audrey's favorites that she put on a poster photo of her kids was from Lee Brice's song Love Like Crazy: Be a best friend, tell the truth, and overuse I love you Go to work, do your best, don't outsmart your common sense Never let your prayin' knees get lazy And love like crazy Uncluttering our Homes Involve the whole family in a decluttering project! Decide together where to donate any used items in good condition. Keep the time short and model how to give things away and clean out your spaces. Consider using something like Amazon's givebackbox to make it easy to donate. Quotes Audrey: "Life is so busy and chaotic and so we have to be really intentional about making it not that way." Audrey: "Spring is a time when it is starting to get warmer, flowers are blooming outside and it always feels kind of like a fresh start. We can think of this as our psychological spring cleaning." Sara: "When our schedules are so packed and our children are racing from one thing to the next, it is really hard--perhaps even impossible--to be the parent we want to be, the spouse we want to be, the family we want to be. That's because we love others slowly, not quickly. We serve each other slowly, not quickly. We empathize slowly, not quickly. Some of the best things in life have to be slowed down enough to do well." Sara: "At summer camp, we have kids show up and they're just exhausted. They've had no downtime, no unorganized playtime, no just hanging out with mom and dad time. They are as exhausted as I am after a heavy-duty month of work and that is not our best space in which to grow and learn and thrive." Sara: "What are our family values? What are the things our family stands on? What do we hope our family is known for? What are the qualities that we honestly want our kids to be learning? There are a number of amazing values that we can build into our family culture if we do it intentionally and involve everybody. Identify two or three values that are going to be the hallmarks of your family." Audrey: "Businesses have taglines or vision statements. It's kind of fun to think about what your family's motto could be." Sara: "It's helpful to look at the calendar of a given week or month together and look at the balance of activities. Mark the ones that match your values. It's scary to realize that only one thing our family did actually supported that value. All the rest were very busy and demanding things, but they didn't actually help move our family along in that value. That indicates our activities are not reflecting our values." Sara: "Sometimes we, as parents, in our anxiousness for our kids to be successful adults, add activities to our kids' schedule like extra tutors, extra club sports, and very academic, achievement-focused activities and we're overlooking those activities that actually build character and the human being parts of them that are the real things that create future success, healthy relationships, strong communities, sense of identity and self-confidence." Audrey: "I always thought the service/volunteering things we do need to be grand gestures, but a lot of times what our kids will remember might be more of the simple gestures." Sara: "Most things aren't grand. Most of life is every day. So how do we make these things an everyday moment?" Sara: "I would urge us not to add anything to our schedule unless we cut something out. That's just more stress, more anxiety, more feeling overwhelmed." Sara: "Decluttering is skill we can teach our children. It's way more fun to declutter together than all by yourself. Consider spending even only an hour and inviting your kids to help choose something to declutter." Audrey: "If we just take 30 minutes and each person picks what thing they are going to organize and together come up with one bag to donate or declutter the house, it would really move the needle and make your home feel less cluttered." Audrey: "I'm a believer that outer order leads to inner calm and so I think this is a great practice." Gretchen has created a manifesto rooted in five pillars that serves as the modern version of Henry David Thoreau's classic, Walden, helping us curate our habitats to support our essential selves.

Outer order contributes to inner calm. And for most of us, a rigid, one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work. The fact is, when we tailor our approach to suit our own particular challenges and habits, we're then able to create the order that will make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. My guest on today's show - - has found that getting control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of things we don't use, don't need, or don't love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what's realistic for most people, Gretchen suggests dozens of manageable steps for creating a more serene, orderly environment—one that helps us to create the lives we want. Gretchen is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers: And most recently: . She has an enormous readership, both in print and online, and her books have sold more than three million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. She makes frequent TV appearances and is in much demand as a speaker. On her , she discusses good habits and happiness with her sister Elizabeth Craft. Rubin started her career in law and was clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor when she realized she wanted to be a writer. She lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What inspired Gretchen to write ...7:40 Began with The Happiness Project (link) Disproportinate connection between outer order and inner calm (clutter blind) Getting control of our "stuff" makes us feel in control of our lives Empowers you to tackle the big projects we might otherwise avoid -If there has been scientific research to substantiate Gretchen's findings...9:00 Yes, but there's a problem: People want to know what's "best" way to clear clutter, when to do certain tasks People are different; they have strengths where others have weaknesses Some people thrive in a little bit of clutter No one size fits all approach -The criteria one can use to decide what goes and what stays...11:15 "Don't get organized"; Start by getting rid of things Marie Kondo's guidance (does this spark joy?) is slightly lofty in its aspirations Three questions to ask: Do I need this? Do I love this? Do I (or will I) use this? Be realistic about what "someday" means in the context of if and when you'll use something Ask yourself, "Have I thought about getting rid of this more than 3 times?" We often overestimate what we can do in a short time, and underestimate what we can do in a longer period of time -Whether decluttering is the same as minimalism...18:20 Minimalism as we know it is a bit extreme in Gretchen's view There are simplicity lovers and abundance lovers It all goes back to there's no one size fits all approach -How to mentally "let go" of things...20:25 The "fantasy self" Be honest with yourself: will you really use that thing? It frees up mental guilt, as well as space for other goals and desires Nostalgia, past self The best way to clear clutter is to not buy stuff in the first place Have a box of clutter, put a date on it, then throw it away after one year without looking inside it Imagine someone else enjoying the stuff Give away or recycle when possible "You created the donation to the landfill when you bought it" "Store it at the store" -Best practices in shopping online and offline to avoid unnecessary clutter...30:07 There are under buyers and over buyers Always shop as a guest; helps cut down on impulse buying Unsubscribe to all promotional newsletters Don't subscribe in the first place Force yourself to hold things in your arms whenever possible Break the impulse by intentionally making things inconvenient Don't touch, don't taste Book: Set limits and check with a partner (spouses) before purchasing Make lists -What a "clutter magnet" is, and why it's important...39:25 Identify the spot where clutter tends to accumulate; make a point to keep it clean every day It's easier to maintain once you take it back to "clear" It will spark joy -How to train children to declutter their personal spaces...43:15 Don't think of yourself as the potter who's molding the clay Help them to be honest about what they need, or use Everything sparks joy for children -Whether or not it's important to make your bed every morning...48:00 Establishing a bit of order in the environment is a morale boost Your bed is much closer to you than a chair; you may feel in better order -Whether or not it's wise to find others to do your decluttering for you...53:25 Difficult due to the personal nature of your own stuff Maybe to help stay on task, help with the heavy lifting If you have to ask if it looks good, it probably doesn't -And much more! In this episode we discuss how to boost your energy, focus, and happiness in 5 minutes or less using a dead simple strategy anyone can apply right away. We explore the power of self knowledge and why it’s one of the cornerstones of success in any area of life, and we uncover several powerfully uncomfortable questions we can ask ourselves to be happier, healthier and more productive with our guest Gretchen Rubin. Gretchen Rubin is the author of the New York Times bestsellers, Better Than Before, The Happiness Project, Happier at Home, and The Four Tendencies and her latest book is Outer Order Inner Calm. She’s appeared on TV outlets such as the Today show, Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday Morning, and more. She’s also appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and many more!I finally cleaned out my fridge and now I know I can switch careers. When we get control of the stuff of our lives we often see big results.American adults spend 55 minutes a day looking for misplaced items. Focusing on order can yield huge benefits VERY QUICKLY with simple focus. The “one-minute rule” - if you can do it in less than a minute, do it without delay. How to keep the scum of clutter on the surface of life go away. It’s much easier to keep up than to catch up.Figure out WHAT YOU NEED to do your best work and then GET IT - create the environment in which you can thrive. There isn’t ONE BEST WAY to set up your environment to thrive. Self knowledge is the most powerful and fundamental kind of knowledge you can create. One of the great challenges of our lives is really trying to grapple with - what is the truth about ME?Ask yourself uncomfortable questions. Whom do you envy? It’s a very revealing thing. It shows you that they have something that you wish for yourself.Whose job or life gives you a TON of envy? There’s information there about what you want to do. Most useful things involve discomfort - especially when it comes to self knowledge. When trying to decide - should I ask this of myself or not? Choose the BIGGER LIFE - what to YOU will create a BIGGER life? Sometimes it’s worth the insecurity and frustration and anxiety if you’re pursuing what - to you- represents a bigger life. Is it worth the time? The bandwidth? All reality is one interconnected mess. That’s why it’s so important to have a multi-disciplinary perspective. There’s a HUGE difference between “I’m right” and “This is what’s true for me."In a fight over dirty dishes at the office - that’s the tip of a giant iceberg of psychology that shapes hundreds of complex and nuanced interactions. There are so many ways to achieve your goals, experiment and try different methods.Homework: How do you decide what to get rid of? Do you need it, do you use it, do you love it? Don’t get organized, get rid of things first. Homework: The one minute rule - anything you can do in under a minute, do it without delay. It’s not so much WHAT should you do, but rather how can you get yourself to STICK to what you want to do? Experimentation is crucial. Homework: Ask yourself - how have you succeeded in the past? Ask yourself what you learned from that and model that behavior. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

How do you become happier in life? On today's episode, four-time New York Times bestselling author Gretchen Rubin joins us for a fun, insightful conversation. How do you turn feeling envy and lying into tools for our own growth? Relationships for Happiness There are two ways to achieve happiness, depending on the mental framework that you use. One of which is that to be happy, we need to have enduring, intimate bonds. “Ancient philosophers and contemporary scientists would agree that relationship is key to happiness.” - Gretchen Rubin We have to feel like we belong, be able to confide a secret, get support, and give support. Anything that broadens or deepens our relationships is something that would make us happier. When we look at people who say they're happier, they tend to have more relationships. Self-knowledge is also Key From a different vantage point, you can also say that the key to happiness is self-knowledge. We can build a happy life on the foundation of our own nature, interests, values, and temperament. “It's really by knowing ourselves that with this knowledge we can shape our lives to better reflect what is true for us.” - Gretchen Rubin It should be fairly easy to know oneself when you hang out with yourself all day long, right? But the truth is that it's not very easy at all. This stems from how we sometimes wish that we were different from who are or from how we are different from what other people expect or want us to be. Envy and Lies are Helpful Gretchen is keen on finding questions or indirect ways to help us understand ourselves better. For instance, whom do we envy? People don't want to admit they feel it, but envy is actually helpful because it shows us what we wish we had. Another question we must ask ourselves is, what do we lie about? Oftentimes when we lie, what we do doesn't match up with what our value is and this is really important information to reflect on. “The fact that you're not being truthful about it means that somehow, you're not comfortable with what your real answer is and that's a sign—hey, maybe I need to get my actions and values into better harmony.” - Gretchen Rubin To hear more about how we can achieve inner calm and peace from Gretchen, download and listen to the episode. What a tremendous honor to connect with mega-bestselling author and award-winning podcast host Gretchen Rubin. Gretchen writes about habits, happiness, and human nature. She is the author of The New York Times’ bestsellers The Happiness Project, Happier at Home, Better Than Before, 4 Tendencies, and her most recent book, Outer Order Inner Calm. I know there’s no way I am alone when I say I found The Four Tendencies to be a life changing book. A big takeaway is the importance of understanding yourself – understanding what your greatest values are, but also how to understand others and play to them. First, we talk about Gretchen’s latest book, Outer Order Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Ma ke Room for Happiness. Gretchen has found that most people feel that when they have more control over all their possessions, they have more control over their life. Funnily enough, Gretchen’s sister is one of the rarer types who just doesn’t get bothered by clutter. But those who get very stressed out by messiness are often guilty of “ procrasticlearing.” Gretchen coined this term to describe the act of procrastination by way of “productivity” – you decide to do a seemingly productive task, like cleaning out your pantry or your closet, vacuuming the floor, organizing your cookbooks in alphabetical order....instead of just doing the real, pressing, important task you ’ve just been trying your hardest to avoid. I am sure you can recall a time or two (or ten!) in your past where you ’ve chose n to do something that you could justify as “productive” a form of procrastination from the true tasks you’ve had at hand. Once you become aware of the hidden costs that come with having consistent clutter around, then it’s hard not to wonder how on earth people (including yourself) are ok with living like this. Gretchen’s book will help you decrease the stress in your life by decluttering your home and strictly sorting through your possessions. That m ight sound scary and overwhelming, especially if you’re a nostalgic person (or just suffering from hoarding tendencies), but Gretchen m akes it easy: ask yourself three simple questions as you go through each item: * Do I need it? * Do I use it? * Do I love it? This will help you quickly and efficiently eliminate the items you do not need (the very same items adding onto your piles of mess , therefore increasing your stress). Most people’s days are jam-packed – work, hobbies, family and friends, and clearing clutter can easily wind up being the last item on your never-ending to-do list. Once you’ve managed to catch up with clearing up, you’ve got to stay consistent with keeping up. It’s so much easier to keep up a clean environment than tackle huge piles that need to be seriously sorted through. It’s the difference between waiting for weeks to do all your laundry versus doing a little bit each week. By doing small things to keep your environment clutter-free, keeping up will become habit: you will find yourself automatically putting books, dishes, shoes, various household items, all back in their rightful place, because you’ve ingrained this habit of keeping up into your daily practice. At one point I ask Gretchen, ‘what should I do about my tendency?’ only to discover that I am not the first person to ask her about this. Gretchen says a lot of people actually wish they were in another tendency category – obligers wanting t o behave more like rebels, upholders dreaming of acting more like a questioner. However, that is what The Four Tendencies is all about. We are all equipped with our own unique gifts – our own style of doing things and communicating ideas, and that is where your strength lies: in the fact that no one is you. Your power is rooted in your unique abilities. A rebel is never going to act like an upholder, but you wouldn’t want them to anyways! A rebel has their own specific gifts to offer, just as an upholder or an obli g er does as well. To expect either of them to act like the other would be unrealistic. You can only be yourself, and as Gretchen points out during our discussion about what the key to happiness is, everyone is different. People are inspired by and satisfied by different things, and the definition of “ happiness ” depends on the individual defining it. Like Gretchen said, happiness means something different for everyone, and some people (like her sister) don’t get affected the same way other people are by clutter! Reading Outer Order Inner Calm will give you the tools you need to recognize, and then eliminate what is no longer serving you in your life, and The Four Tendencies will help you identify specific elements of your innate personality so you can play to your strengths and learn how to work with your weaknesses. It’s all about empowering yourself through self-awareness of how well you truly understand your innate nature (your tendency). As Gretchen says, “Is it possible to really change your inborn, hardwired genetically programmed personality? I don’t think so, or if it is – it is very, very difficult. But it is very easy to change your circumstances.” Gretchen’s advice for anyone struggling with any aspect of their tendency is not to try to be like another tendency, but to do it things your own way. If you’re a rebel, you’re going to have difficulty following schedules and rules, but if you need to do something that involves some strict limitations, then work with those constraints in your signature, rebel way. We all have our own unique gifts, and Gretchen’s teachings help you thrive and live your best life through empowering self-awareness. *TIMESTAMPS:* There is disproportionate yields to the art of tidying up.
