Step into the spotlight with Grumms, a queer, transgender artist, as we traverse the stages of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and navigate the world of theatre and performance. Join us on a journey that's as captivating as it is insightful. Grums pulls back the curtain on their award-winning season at the festival and shares the emotional roller coaster that is the month-long experience. They illuminate the mental toll and the comparative nature of the festival, offering a glimpse into a performer's psyche during what's considered the most competitive of the Fringe Circuits. We then pivot our spotlight to the importance of queer stories and how comedy can be an influential tool for expressing significant themes and messages. Grums expounds on their play, 'Scum & Manifesto', and how it strives to challenge the gender binary and empower its audience. As we delve deeper into the conversation, we also touch on the rise of anti-trans and anti-queer rhetoric, emphasizing the crucial need for representation and understanding in our current socio-political climate. Our compelling chat doesn't stop there. Grums opens up about their personal journey, from understanding their gender identity to coming out as trans. They share intimate details about their 'found family' from the fringe tour and the solace they found within these relationships. We also discuss the necessity to educate children on gender diversity, challenging traditional 'sex ed' narratives. So, get ready for an engaging conversation that explores theatre, queer stories, and the power of self-identity. All the world's a stage, and we invite you to share ours in this episode. Bio Grumms (they/them) is a queer, transgender theatre artist from Treaty 6 Territory. Over the past decade, Grumms has created a body of original queer work and toured it around the world, including across Canada, US, UK, Europe, and Australia. They are the co-creator of SCUM: a manifesto, Girl in the Box, Pack Animals, and Creepy Boys. With Something in the Water, Grumms has toured around the world performing to queer audiences young and old. Grumms is the recipient of the 2022 RBC Outstanding Award in recognition for their contribution to the queer and trans community across Saskatchewan. Outside of self-creation, Grumms also works as a director, puppeteer, and video artist. Next up, Grumms is writing a new TYA puppet musical in collaboration with indie music icon, Rae Spoon, premiering and touring across the prairies in early 2024. www.scantilygladtheatre.com Twitter: @scantilygladsk Instagram: @scantilygladsk Something in the Water at Next Stage: https://fringetoronto.com/next-stage/show/something-water Support Stageworthy Donate: tips.pinecast.com/jar/stageworthy

For this episode, in honour of the "Trans Day of Visibility" I gathered with Emily Gleeson and Kevin Sutton to have an open-dialogue about our respective experiences exploring life outside the gender binary. All three of us identify as "They/them", but I am often "she", Emily at times is any and all of the pronouns, and as Kevin puts it, for them, "gender is a canvas". This conversation reflects how complex this experience is, how there is so much beauty when you start to give yourself space to break out of the molds and assumptions about gender that we are often groomed to accept. It was incredible to have the space to have this conversation centred from our own experiences, in a safe environment to bond over much we are all still learning. We highly recommend you tune in - in particular, if you are a person who ever feels like you drift from what you would think of as a "typical" gender role, you might hear yourself reflected in some of this. These are important conversations, and we are so thankful to Kevin and Emily being open to this dialogue. The episode features music in behind the dialogue, from Emily's band SWOON, and a live recording of a song of Kevin Sutton's. (Plus one of Jenny's favourite Rae Spoon songs).Happy Trans Day of Visibility! This interview was originally recorded on March 29th, 2022 This is a public episode. From trailblazing queer musicians of the past, who used country music as a springboard in expressing their sexuality, to emerging non-binary and queer artists navigating the music industry today-- with a keen eye and ear Goldin-Perschbacher examines the inherent politics surrounding 'genre,' identity in music and how the normative country music standard was ultimately dismantled. We also interviewed Canadian country music singer and author Rae Spoon. A leading voice in the trans, non-binary and queer community, Spoon shares their insight on both the challenges and victories of navigating the current social and music industry landscape.Use Promo Code F21UIP when ordering Queer Country from the www.press.uillinois.edu for a 30% discount until December 2022. It's a power hour of tremendous ladies (sorry to be so gendered about it, not everyone on the playlist identifies that way!). Let's call it a celebration of a higher vocal range? Listen in to hear Neko Case take on a Sparks song, Julie Doiron reunite in the 00's with Eric's Trip, recall the nights Basia Bulat and Martha Wainwright came to Meaford Hall and Fiver played the golden town's Home + Home Fest. Revisit a classic by Doctor of Fine Arts and Summerfolk alumni Buffy Ste. Marie, check in with local songstress Brianna McGowan, regret the time I missed seeing Weather Station (and Neko for that matter) at the Avening Community Centre. Get in the groove with Frazey Ford, and hear some gems from Elecric Eclectics alumni Jennifer Castle, Mary Margaret O'Hara and U.S. Girls. As if I could fit in more: Rae Spoon's ode to the Great Lakes and a brand new track that came into the Georgian Bay Roots inbox from Carmen Braden. Carving by Fran Bouwman

Did you know that LGBTQ+ people can be cancer people? You did. Oh. Well we sure hope you're ready for an episode about the queer cancer experience. Stef (she's here! She's queer!) leads us and our furry little line of marching RATS on a pride parade rife with…increased morbidity, mortality, and poorer outcomes??? Maybe that explains the low attendance! In letters: the pain caused by being misgendered (over and over!) at the cancer center is hurting our community, and then we hear from a listener who can't seem to convince her surgeons that she truly just wants to go flat, dammit! In a literal bummer of a segment, RATS tackles anal cancer and why it's wreaking havoc on folks who enjoy bum stuff. HPV gets some of the blame, but homophobia earns a place on the podium, too. Lace up your roller skates and get ready to talk income inequality, bbs, because we're #queeringcancer! Prostate Cancer UK's pamphlet mentioned in this episode is available here To learn more about the RATS in this episode, visit https://cancer-network.org/cancer-information/gay-men-and-cancer/anal-cancer-hiv-and-gaybisexual-men/To register for the National LGBT cancer network's survey findings report, visit https://cancer-network.org/out-the-national-cancer-survey/Rae Spoon's Medium page: https://medium.com/@raespoonRATS theme song by Jessica BoudreauxTheme music by Vyvyvyr

Kick back and let KevKat (@kevkatislost) take you to the promised land, tonight at 7pm MT on NoCo FM! A note from KevKat: Out of pure concern of sounding like a dick, I just want to clarify that I do not mean that some actions do not carry the consequence of never being excusable. And I do not mean that any victim has to forgive their abuser, or let them into their lives. This is purely based off of people correcting toxic behaviors that may have resulted from their upbringing or time, In which these behaviors were generally okay. I am in no way excusing those behaviors or writing them off as a "products of their time". I'm trying to say people make mistakes, people fuck up, and people say bad shit when they think it's okay, and once they learn that their behaviors are problematic and are given the chance to grow, if they choose to do so they should be acknowledged for that growth. As I say in the show, if you want further clarification please message me on Instagram or Twitter and I will be happy to provide! Support this podcast

This week’s podcast features the baroque-pop duo F&M. Rebecca and Ryan Anderson, who together have chosen the song “Place to Hide” by Concealer.   Concealer combines musical traditions to create melodic and hypnotic Heavy Wave. Vue Weekly describes Concealer as “one of the stranger musical partnerships to have ever risen from the Edmonton music scene”.   F&M mix their individual talents to create an amalgam of folk, rock, classical and pop that’s intermingled with influences stemming from multiple cross-continent tours, and smattering of European adventures.   Concealer’s debut album fêted:fetid was released September 4, 2015 by Mark Davis’ Weatherbelle and experimental indie artist Rae Spoon’s Coax labels. Capital City Records Song of the Week is an affiliated member of the Alberta Podcast Network, powered by ATB.

While controversy continues here at UBC (http://president.ubc.ca/featured/2013/09/18/ubc-measures-announced-to-address-the-c-u-s-frosh-events/) it's also SOCAN reporting week for our station. A fine excuse to play CanCon, featuring artists who are playing in Vancouver in the near future. The notable exception being the song by Arrogant Worms, which I played since it's Int'l Talk Like A Pirate Day tomorrow. Arrrr! Tonight I broke with tradition and interviewed a non-musician. Chelsea McMullan is director of a documentary about transgendered folk musician Rae Spoon. The film has its world premiere at the upcoming Vancouver Film Festival. (a great film, so try to see it when it's here)Enjoy the rest of your week, folks, and thanks again for listening to this podcast.Cheers!val folkoasis@gmail.com

This week Steve Earle brings his Townesaoke tour to Winnipeg. I've long said that I'd rather hear Steve Earle do his own songs and hear Townes do his own songs, so this week that's exactly what we did. We also heard from Hayes Carll, James Keelaghan, Geoff Berner, and Rae Spoon who are all appearing in town soon. And, some new music that I've been dying to play (and a Fred Eaglesmith tangent it set me off on.)
