Mark Springer, CEO of Dayspring Restoration (Bozeman, Montana) and president of Restoration Industry Association (RIA) joins The DYOJO Podcast to discuss: The Mark Springer origin story His dad started Dayspring Restoration in 1989 as a small side business. Mark was the only guy in high school with a cell phone, not to be cool but so that his dad could get ahold of him to respond to after hours water damage emergencies. For a short period of time Mark tried to get away from property restoration but was sucked back in. Mark Springer 2.0 When Mark returned to Montana, he realized there was a lot of opportunity in this growing field of insurance claim damage repairs and set out to grow the company. Mark noted, "If there was a place to advertise, we were there." Some of his most memorable advertisements were flooding and then burning his own house to demonstrate the restoration process. Dayspring has grown from one location doing about $75,000 a year in sales to 6 locations producing over $17 million in annual revenues. Mark shares that Dayspring has three main buckets that they draw sales leads from: Word of mouth and prior customers. mark shares that the average policy holder has a claim every 7 years, and if you can achieve repeat business that means one customer may have 4 claims over a 30 year span. Many of Dayspring's clients are 2nd and 3rd generation family members. They also invest in online marketing including pay per click and SEO in addition to their direct business development and mass media efforts. Mark recognizes that if he were starting over in today's market, things would be much different than when he started his process in the early 1990's. He believes there are a few universal principles that can help any entrepreneur in any market: First, having a plan and adapting your plan. Develop your plan and execute on it with consistency. As Mark likes to say, "An imperfect plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow." You must have the determination and capitalization to endure. Their team meets quarterly to review their strategic plan and adapt to trends in each local market. Second, over invest in the financial side of your business. An accurate understanding of your financial picture will empower you to make good decisions and seize upon opportunities. Third, invest in people and culture. In today's market your team members have to be more important than your clients. Happy customers come after you have invested in creating happy and cared for team members. Mark discusses the work he has been doing with his team at Restoration Industry Association to create the Advocacy and Government Affairs (AGA) Committee and other key targets to help improve the property restoration industry. This week on IAQradio we welcome an All Star cast for a frank discussion on the future of the restoration industry. Our guests were all speakers at last week's 71st International Restoration Convention and Industry Expo in Palm Springs, CA. They all gave important presentations or Keynotes at the Restoration Industry Association's (RIA) annual event. The Town Hall theme for this year's event was "The Future of the Water Damage Restoration Industry" and was facilitated by none other than IAQradio's Restoration Global Watchdog Pete Consigli! The Town Hall was the culmination of one of RIA's convention story line's that included a breakout session moderated by Ken Larsen on the Do's and Don'ts of Rebates, Referral Fees, Comps and Gratuities with Peter Crosa and well known IAQ attorney Michael Bowdoin. Ed Cross was the convention's Day 2 keynote speaker and addressed the RIA members on "The 6 New Legal Points Restorers must Understand to Survive in 2017". Crosa who is the sitting President for the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters (NAIIA) presented the Independent Adjusters viewpoint on the Town Hall Panel. Well known industry advocate Ed Cross aka "The Restoration Lawyer" made his case for industry unification through one voice and closed out his Town Hall panel presentation with a message to band together, "Band or Burn" was the reoccurring message! The RTPE program (Registered Third Party Evaluator) recently explained to RIA members at their annual convention in Palm Springs during their Town Hall meeting by Ken Larsen, CR, WLS, CMP may be a solution for contractors who are constantly challenged by TPA's on their scope of work and invoices. Longtime industry activist and RIA supporter Ken Larsen presented his vision for the RTPE program on the RIA Town Hall panel along with Peter Crosa, AIC, RPA and Ed Cross, Esq. Larsen has a 5 part series on the TPE concept that was previewed in the 2017 February issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) magazine. A high point of the RIA annual banquet and awards ceremony was the presentation of C&R's Golden Quill award won this year by IAQradio's own, Cliff "The Z-man" Zlotnik for his article on "Concerns over the Water Restoration Industry". The culmination of the ceremony was the awarding of the association's most prestigious honor, the presentation of the Martin L. King award. The 32nd annual recipient of the Marty King award was Ken Larsen for his years of service and activism to RIA and the industry! Way to go Ken!!
This week on IAQ Radio we welcome back Ken Larsen along with The The Restoration Industries Global Watchdog, Pete Consigli. This week was the Restoration Industry Associations (RIA) 70th Anniversary and Convention in Orlando, Florida. We will recap some key learning points from the event and opine on the state of the industry. Things are very unsettled in the disaster restoration world at the moment. Unrest at the IICRC has many concerned but RIA had an outstanding conference with strong attendance. What does the future hold for the disaster restoration industry? Ken Larson is driven to learn everything there is to know about the restorative drying sciences. He teaches courses for people interested in RIA, IICRC and ACAC certifications. He has some strong opinions and does on not mind sharing them. Ken is the author of the leading industry reference guide on "state of the art" structural restorative drying practices, "Leadership in Restorative Drying". Pete Consigli has been a member of the Restoration Industry Association (formerly ASCR, International) since 1977. In his current dual role of RIA Education Director and Industry Adviser, Pete reports to RIA's Executive Committee of the association's Board of Directors (BOD). He directs all aspects of RIA's education program, continuing the long standing tradition of providing RIA members industry-leading comprehensive technical and managerial training. Pete also advises the RIA BOD on matters impacting the restoration industry and the RIA mission.

This show could be characterized as â??Restoration Confidentialâ??, it was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industryâ??s misnomers and folklore! Listen in as two of the industryâ??s most well known and colorful personalities sit down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their â??workâ?? is still in progress! This was a tremendous show that gave us a peak into Consigli and Zlotnikâ??s Restoration Journey with a destination yet to be realized. We will finish the story with another special show following Summer Camp on August 7th at noon eastern. IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. The recent passing of industry icon Marty King who founded the original restoration industry trade group in 1971 leaves Pete and Cliff as the only remaining honorary members of RIA. Next year Pete and Cliff will celebrate 2 milestones with RIAâ??s 70th Anniversary Convention in March and the 20th anniversary of Summer Camp in August. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburekâ??s legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners donâ??t know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! Pete and Cliff talk about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today and give IAQ Radio listeners an insiders view on how, why and when things happened! During Parts 1 & 2 Pete, Cliff and Radio Joe sat down at the â??kitchen tableâ?? and had a retrospective conversation providing the background on the most pressing issues the industry faces today. During Part 3 August 7th Radio Joe will press Pete and Cliff to finish the story and share their vision for the future of the industry with IAQ Radio listeners.
