Welcome to another episode ofThe Round Table! This week, Daniella, Preena, Kassandra, Inyoo and Sauda discussed the power of story-telling, intersectional identities, the role of youth in bringing about societal change, and so much more. They spoke with Dr. Rob Carpenter, a UCLA Professor and author, who has worked in the White House, Hollywood, tech and transportation, and who is a self-described “firm believer in the power of creativity and storytelling.”The hosts learned how Dr. Rob's intersectional identity -- as a part Black, White, and Native man who grew up in a fully White household, in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, with Jewish and Asian best-friends -- shapes his writing and allows him to empathize with many diverse groups of people. They question whether today's world lives up to Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, share hope for the future through collective youth organizing, and even ponder how idealism grapples with reality in the possibility of creating a utopian world. Passionate for the virtue of stories over statistics in all levels of education, Dr. Rob shares how often, as early as 2nd Grade, students are “educated out of their creativity” -- teachers forced to teach to the test are unable to incorporate stories or the arts, contributing to the attendance crises across many schools. Yet the system is possible to reform if politicians are made to understand it needs changing, and on a smaller level, Dr.Rob describes how he, utilizing his curriculum freedom as a College Professor, makes sure every lesson includes reflection questions giving students the opportunity to relate their personal experiences to class-content.Asked about his suggestions to fix the educational system, Dr. Rob mentions increasing inter-subject integration, role-playing in the classroom, and teaching “from the outside in.” The conversation wraps up with hosts sharing their “why” for participating in these late-night conversations and staying involved overall, and giving their advice for the generation coming up behind them. Thank you for listening!
Today, we'll focus on the topic everyone in the trucking industry shouldn't miss - solving safety concerns and managing risks! Rob Carpenter joins us to discuss the significance of understanding both broker and carrier perspectives, particularly in compliance issues, improving situational awareness and enhanced safety among drivers, implementing training programs, and pushing for better insurance practices to mitigate legal risks! In this edition of ASCL 150: Leadership Legacies, General Secretary Geoff Barton talks to Rob Carpenter, CEO, Inspire Partnership Academy Trust.
The writing process consists of three steps: (1) researching and outline, (2) productive writing, and (3) editing. But are the tools we use designed for this process? Are we as efficient as we think we are? Is there room to save time and increase our creative output? We sat down with Rob Carpenter, content strategist and Head of Marketing at Butter, to talk about ways to work smarter, not harder.
In this episode of Freight Nation: A Trucking Podcast, host Brent Hutto is joined by Rob Carpenter, President of Carpenter Compliance. Together, they discuss all things compliance, from Rob's own introduction into the world to where small businesses get it wrong.
In this episode we discuss all things safety, compliance, and winter preparation with Rob Carpenter of TruckSafe. In this episode, we welcomed back Rob, a fan favorite and safety expert, to help us kick off the year with a focus on safety in the trucking industry. Rob, who has a rich background in trucking, from driving to owning a company and now consulting with TruckSafe alongside lawyers Brandon Wiseman and Jared Childress, shared his insights on the importance of safety and compliance for truckers of all sizes, from owner-operators to large fleets. Key Takeaways: Safety as a Priority: Health and safety are the top values in trucking. Without a focus on safety, truckers risk their businesses and lives. Defensible Processes: Rob emphasized the importance of having defensible processes and programs in place to protect against litigation and ensure safety beyond mere compliance. Practical Compliance: Compliance isn't just about following rules; it's about understanding the 'why' behind them and preparing for potential legal defense. Winter Driving Tips: With the winter season upon us, Rob provided valuable tips for truckers, including carrying essentials like battery packs, blankets, and windshield wiper fluid, and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance. Continuous Improvement: Rob suggested using resources like the FMCSA's safety planner to check for compliance and exposure points, and highlighted the importance of continuous license monitoring. Culture of Safety: Companies must articulate their safety expectations clearly through handbooks, orientations, and continuous communication to foster a culture of safety. Driver Persona Changes: Rob noted that the driver persona has evolved over the years, and the industry must adapt to these changes, including how drivers are initially taught to drive. Personal Conveyance: The misuse of personal conveyance is a common issue, and companies need to define clear policies to prevent abuse. Weather Awareness: Both drivers and dispatchers should be vigilant about weather conditions to avoid unnecessary risks and communicate potential delays to customers. Conclusion: Safety in trucking is multifaceted, involving compliance, company culture, driver behavior, and proactive measures. Rob's expertise provided our listeners with a comprehensive understanding of how to approach trucking safety in the new year, regardless of the size of their operation. We look forward to having Rob back on the show to continue discussing safety and compliance in the trucking industry.

The global workforce crisis is real and huge. Rob Carpenter, Founder & CEO of Valyant AI talks to Greg and Valentina about the capabilities of conversational AI and at the same time, he addresses its limitations - the inability to keep up with the creativity of human language. Conversational AI is building a solid reputation for improving CX but also increasing concerns about its impact on the job market. Despite being the CEO of a company deploying the AI tool in the restaurant industry, Rob provides a realistic viewpoint on the (supposedly) dystopian future. Check out Rob's profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-carpenter/
Rob Carpenter was born and raised in Dillingham, Alaska - and no... he can't see Russia from his back steps. He has been a long term space ship nerd, and confesses that one of the reason he got into entrepreneurship is because he wants to eventually secure a ticket to space. Currently, he lives outside of Boulder, Colorado with his young family, and really enjoys the outdoors, growing his company, and taking good care of his little ones. While his kids are young, he loves to take the kids hiking, swimming at the pool, and going to the zoo and local animal sanctuaries.Rob started a company, wanting to originally create holographic employees, using a gaming engine - and they even named this employee Holly. What they figured out during that process was that conversational AI hadn't been solved yet, and if they were ever going to make their original idea work, they would have to solve it. So... they got heads down solving it.This is the creation story of Valyant.SponsorsImmediateOrbitPostmarkStytchVerb DataWebapp.ioLinksWebsite: https://valyant.ai/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-carpenter/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Rob Carpenter, the founder and CEO of Colorado-based Valyant AI, explains how his company is changing the fast-food industry with the introduction of "Holly," an order-taking system that interacts with customers using conversational artificial intelligence. Carpenter also discusses AI's potential and limitations, ethical implications and what the impact of this groundbreaking technology will have on customers and those working in the restaurant industry.
In the latest episode of Hospitality Hangout podcast, Michael Schatzberg “The Restaurant Guy” and Jimmy Frischling “ The Finance Guy” chat with Rob Carpenter, founder and chief executive officer at Valyant AI about automated order taking for quick service restaurants. Carpenter says, “There's a little bit of a labor crunch out there, one point seven million unfilled positions across the hospitality industry right now. So what we do is stick revolutionary cutting edge technology into your restaurant, greets customers, answers questions, takes the customer's order and then submits it directly into the point-of-sale system. Making the operators and the employees' lives easier and along the way what we see is anywhere between a five percent to twenty percent increase in top line revenue. So if you're doing one to two million a year you can add twenty percent to your top line overnight. While solving the labor problem.”When asked about where the idea of Valyant AI came from, Carpenter says, “so the core initial idea for Valyant which we will eventually get to is the idea of automating customer service in physical locations. So what the very first version of Valyant's product was effectively a holographic employee. So imagine a transparent OLED display which is effectively a piece of glass merged with a flat screen tv and we render a five and a half foot tall digital person and her name was Holly and she could blink her eyes and lean in and the idea was that she could carry on a conversation with you.” Carpenter talks about there not being holographic employees or automated customer service available in many places because the technology is extremely hard. They pivoted the business saying they would need to solve the problem of conversational AI in order to bring a holographic employee to market. Carpenter says, “we've effectively spent the last four and a half years hyper focused on solving conversational AI and right now it's for restaurants. Eventually we want to roll it to hospitality in general and then we would look to in the future to take it to additional industries beyond that.” To hear Carpenter breakdown how the AI translates for the customer in a drive-thru, and how Valyant AI can help address the labor crisis that hospitality is facing, tune into this episode of Hospitality Hangout. The customer service is very important when running a restaurant. If you're ordering drive-thru and the employee misses an order, that's not a good look for the company. Maybe the employee is too tired to upsell because they have been working for eight hours straight. There are a lot of things that limit them from being 100% focused on the job. The CEO of Valyant AI, Rob Carpenter believes he has found the solution to this. Join your host Chad Burmeister as he talks to Rob about his proprietary conversational AI. Tweetables:“I thought the hologram was the hard part and that the conversational AI was solved, but it was basically the inverse of that.” — Rob Carpenter [0:06:47]“There's benefits when you get into a new industry or technology not knowing the problems, because you don't know what your limitations are. I think a lot of times that frees you up to be more creative and innovative.” — Rob Carpenter [0:08:38]“If I was to postulate where things would end up, I'd say it's probably a 90/10. 90% is that the technology has to be better, and keep getting better. 90% of everything needs to be handled by the AI. The other 10%, people need to be more thoughtful when they communicate with these systems.” — Rob Carpenter [0:17:22]“There's 1.7 million unfilled positions in the restaurant industry right now. 1 in 6 of every position available right now is in restaurants.” — Rob Carpenter [0:20:26]“Innovation is not only built into economies, but it's essential for their health and long-term safety.” — Rob Carpenter [0:23:28]Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Rob Carpenter on LinkedInValyant AI
