Two threads that wove through all of last year for us: coming together in creative community in the face of looming climate disaster and reclaiming Appalachian murder ballads. Those might seem like radically different subjects, but the overlap – for us, at least – was using art to grow resilience in the face of grief. Especially with the climate disaster that was Helene hitting so many of our neighbors. This episode features interviews with musician Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses), artist and climate organizer Denali Nalamalapu, Jason Duncan from the Wilkes County Historical Museum, and discussions with MidMountain Fellows Heather Adams, Sarah Gill, Katherine Fahey, Dan Van Allen, Becky Poole, Miriam Juliana, Elsa Howell, and Marie Anderson. This episode also featured a clip of the Kingston Trio's version of "Tom Dooley" and instrumentals from Betsy Podsiadlo's performance in Fatal Femme Agency during MidMountain Fest in October of 2024.This episode was produced with support from Mid Atlantic Arts' Central Appalachian Living Traditions Program.

In this episode of The Paul Taylor Podcast, I'm joined by ESPN sports broadcaster and author Anne Marie Anderson, who shares how a tragic event at age 23 transformed her approach to risk-taking and career advancement. We delve into her new book "Cultivating Audacity", exploring why some people seem 'luckier' than others, and how to build the courage to take meaningful risks in life and career. Anne Marie reveals helpful strategies for managing fear, silencing your inner critic, and building a powerful support network she calls your "front row". From her journey as a family storyteller to broadcasting to 70 million homes, to leaving a dream job at ESPN headquarters for an uncertain future in California, this conversation is filled with actionable insights on turning fear into data, making strategic career moves, and developing an audacious identity. Whether you're contemplating a career change, battling self-doubt, or simply want to live more boldly, this episode offers concrete steps to help you bridge the gap between the life you dream of and the one you're living. Key Topics: Career Origins: Ann Marie Anderson's journey from being a family storyteller to sports broadcaster Life-Changing Moments: How a tragic event inspired her to take more risks Understanding Luck: Why "lucky" people succeed through mindset and action Handling Fear: Practical ways to manage fear in high-pressure situations Inner Critics: Dealing with self-doubt and negative inner voices Support Networks: The power of having the right people in your "front row" Sports Leadership: Lessons learned from observing elite sports coaches Career Choices: Making decisions based on lifestyle rather than just career advancement Key Takeaways: When you fail at something, write down what you learned from the experience instead of viewing it as a negative outcome. Before taking a major risk, break it down into smaller test steps to validate if it's worthwhile rather than reckless. Use a timer to work in focused 25-minute blocks with short breaks, especially for important tasks you've been putting off. Create your own "front row" by identifying 3-5 people who will push, challenge and support you, then explicitly ask them to help hold you accountable. When your inner critic appears, acknowledge it but respond with "that's not helpful" and redirect your focus to your next action step. Build resilience by deliberately seeking out small rejections or failures in low-stakes situations to desensitise yourself to fear. Instead of focusing on outcomes, celebrate the daily actions and effort you put in toward your goals. When you think of the word “audacity,” what comes to mind? Honestly, for most of us, it's probably a negative connotation — as in, how do they have the audacity to do that? In her new book Cultivating Audacity: Dismantle Doubt and Let Yourself Win, Emmy Award-winning sports broadcaster Anne Marie Anderson is looking to reframe the word “audacity” into a positive, and something we all should be doing: being audacious enough to go for the big dream, the big goal, the big life. As she writes in Cultivating Audacity, which came out on January 1, “When the pain of staying the same is greater than the fear of change, it's time to cultivate audacity.” In this book and in this conversation, Anne Marie teaches us about decision making, and how to take calculated risks — not reckless risks — to get to the life we want. Inspired by the sudden passing of a colleague at just 37 years old — and right before her eyes — Anne Marie teaches us that we have no idea how much time we have left, and how imperative it is to just go for it — whatever “it” is to you. I know this is true in my own life, and I guarantee it is for you, too — there is something you want to do in your life, be it in your personal life or your professional life, that is gnawing at you. A calling that just won't go away. This book will get you over the line and encourage you to follow that calling and to take bold risks. In today's episode, Anne Marie talks us through four questions that will help us start focusing our intentions; introduces us to four big barriers to doing this work and how to overcome them; teaches us about the contemplations Cs and how they can help us; and, I think these are two of the most fascinating concepts she talks about, introduces us to “ikigai” and what it means to have a “front row” in your life — and how important that is. This conversation left me fired up to go and live the life I was meant to. Here to walk us through it all is Anne Marie Anderson, a three-time Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster, keynote speaker, and author. Anne Marie has spent more than three decades in sports television both behind and in front of the camera and has covered six Olympic Games, NBA and MLB playoffs, the Super Bowl, heavyweight title fights, golf majors, and countless other events. Anne Marie has lived out Cultivating Audacity in her own life, giving up a producer role for ESPN's SportsCenter at their headquarters in Connecticut and moving across the country to California; ESPN ultimately offered her a contract after that move that ended up more than doubling her salary. Soon she began to examine other areas of her life she wanted to change and challenge the status quo, and Cultivating Audacity was born. Anne Marie is one of the most experienced play-by-play announcers in the business, calling plays for ESPN, ABC, NBC, Fox, and TBS, and doing so in a very male-dominated business. Who said audacity had to have a negative connotation, anyway? Cultivating Audacity: Dismantle Doubt and Let Yourself Win by Anne Marie Anderson

Anne Marie Anderson is a three-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, keynote speaker, and author. Anne Marie shares her extraordinary journey from a temporary position at ESPN to covering the world's most prestigious sporting events like the NFL and the Olympics. In her new book, "Cultivating Audacity: Dismantle Doubt and Let Yourself Win," set to release on January 1st, 2025, Anne Marie offers profound insights into the audacity it takes to overcome fear and doubt. She discusses how being surrounded by elite performers has shaped her mindset and motivated her to embrace failure as a necessary step toward success. Her stories are not just about sports but about the audacity that fuels personal and professional growth. Anne Marie and Tony dissect the thin line that separates confidence from cockiness, bringing to light examples from the sports world, such as Deion Sanders and Conor McGregor, who are often slyly critiqued despite their proven track records. This episode reflects on how societal norms and personal insecurities can impact self-assurance and boldness. It's about recognizing that external judgments often reflect more about those judging than those being judged, and the importance of retaining self-belief amidst criticism. Anne Marie and Tony also explore the concept of "skill stacking" and how taking incremental bold steps daily can lead to a more rewarding life. Anne Marie shares her experience transitioning from a producer role to becoming a leading female play-by-play announcer, emphasizing the value of rejection and criticism as tools for growth. She emphasizes the significance of surrounding oneself with driven individuals and prioritizing tasks that align with one's values and vision. Anne Marie's insights underscore the necessity of mental resilience and the joy found in embracing risks and challenges on the path to personal and professional fulfillment. "Póilíní i mbuíon le dílseoirí i mBéal Feirste sna nóchaidí". RUC police have colluded with loyalists who murdered Catholics in Belfast in the 1990s, according to a new report from the Police Ombudsman for the North. Bhí póilíní an RUC claonpháirteach le dílseoirí a dhúnmharaigh Caitlicigh i mBéal Feirste sna nóchaidí, a deirtear i dtuarascáil nua ó Ombudsman na bPóilíní sa Tuaisceart. Ombudsman Marie Anderson investigated nine shooting attacks in which eleven people were killed. D'fhiosraigh an tOmbudsman Marie Anderson naoi n-ionsaí lámhaigh inar maraíodh aon duine dhéag. The attack on Sean Graham's bookmaker's shop on Lower Ormeau Road on 5 February 1992 was one of the omens which the Ombudsman sought to substantiate. Bhí an t-ionsaí ar shiopa geallghlacadóra Sean Graham ar Bhóthar Ormeau Íochtarach ar an 5 Feabhra 1992 i measc na n-eachtraí a d'fhéach an tOmbudsman le cur le bonn. Five people were killed in the store that day. Maraíodh cúigear sa siopa an lá sin. In addition to colluding with terrorists, the report states that the police were negligent in conducting their investigations. Chomh maith le dul i gclaonpháirt le sceimhlitheoirí, deirtear sa tuarascáil go raibh na póilíní faillitheach agus iad ag tabhairt faoina bhfiosrúcháin. On top of the betrayal, says Maire Anderson, police have allowed detectives in terrorist groups their heads off. Mar bharr ar an bhfeall, a deir Maire Anderson, thug póilíní cead a gcinn do bhrathadóirí i ngrúpaí sceimhlitheoireachta. These detectives are people who were involved in murders, she says. Daoine iad na brathadóirí seo a bhí bainteach le dúnmharuithe, a deir sí. The report confirms that eight members of the UDA in south Belfast were detectives and involved in 27 murders or attempted murders. Deimhnítear sa tuarascáil go raibh ochtar ball den UDA i ndeisceart Bhéal Feirste ina mbrathadóirí agus go raibh baint acu le 27 dúnmharú nó iarracht ar dhúnmharú. It is also alleged that the RUC did not inform two men that loyalists intended to kill them; the RUC intelligence department did not share important information with other police investigating murders; and that police were often leaked rather than seized as they should be. Maítear freisin nár chuir an RUC in iúl do bheirt fhear go raibh rún ag dílseoirí iad a mharú; nár roinn rannóg faisnéise an RUC eolas tábhachtach le póilíní eile a raibh dúnmharuithe á bhfiosrú acu; agus go raibh póilíní siléigeach go minic in áit deis a thapú mar ba chóir. Subsequently, it is said that no evidence was found that police had precise prior knowledge of loyalist planned assault attacks. Ina dhiaidh sin, deirtear nár aimsíodh aon fhianaise go raibh eolas beacht roimh ré ag póilíní ar íonsaithe lámhaigh a bhí beartaithe ag dílseoirí. However, says Marie Anderson, that is a matter of concern and a story in itself because there are so many detectives giving them information. Ar a shon sin féin, a deir Marie Anderson, is údar imní agus scéal ann féin é sin ó tharla go raibh an oiread sin brathadóirí ag tabhairt faisnéise dóibh. In a statement, deputy chief constable Jonathan Roberts said that the contents of the Ombudsman's report were not pleasant to read and that they would not apologize for bad policing, as he had said. I ráiteas, thug leas- ardchonstábla na bpóilíní Jonathan Roberts le fios nach deas é le léamh a bhfuil i dtuarascáil an Ombudsman agus nach ndéanfaidh siad leithscéal do dhrochphóilíneacht, mar a dúirt sé. He said there had been a lot of change in the last thirty years and, indeed, the police approach to detectives had changed radically since then. Dúirt sé go raibh go leor athraithe le tríocha bliain agus, go deimhin, gur athraíodh ó bhonn cur chuige na bpóilíní i leith brathadóirí ó shin.

Today's episode of the podcast is an interview with Sarah Marie Anderson who is an email strategist and copywriter who helps entrepreneurs create lasting relationships with email subscribers through engaging welcome sequences. We talk all about email onboarding processes and how to do them, the types of emails you can send and when, the Fibonacci sequence, the mistakes people make when onboarding and how to sell to your list and what to do when they are not buying!   KEY TAKEAWAYS COVERED IN THE PODCAST  Onboarding is a sequence of emails you send to a new person who joins your list – this often walks them through what you do and what you offer creating connection and engaging them. Onboarding can also give you an opportunity to get to know your audience more. Welcome sequences should be around 5-8 emails. When delivering a freebie – make sure you tell them how to get it and then set expectations for the next email. End your email with a teaser as to what is coming next – this will get them prepared for your next email and want to open it! Subsequent emails in your welcome sequence – intro email to you and your business (your story and your why), give value such as blog posts, podcast episodes, freebies etc, talk about your offer so they can understand how you can help them and how they can buy it. Ideally you should wait until subscribers have finished your welcome sequence before sending your main newsletters. If someone opts into multiple lead magnets at once – try to get all your welcome sequences to feed into one sequence after the freebie has been delivered. Don't overwhelm your subscribers with too much information at once! Try to separate things out into multiple emails instead. https://digitaldistillery.com/automated-fibonacci-sequenced-email-marketing/ (How to use the Fibonacci Sequence for emails) Don't come on too strong when your subscribers have just met you – keep selling soft and explain more about what you do and how you help instead. Look at your email stats often – Are people opening them? Are they clicking your links? Go back and review the emails that have had higher stats – what did you do differently? Try sending a round up email with various links they can click. Do some research and get to know your subscribers more – give them a tag when they click so you can personalise more. Re-engagement email – click here if you are here still around! Ask questions in your subject lines. Two magic words to use in subject lines – “That” and “You”   THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO REMEMBER ABOVE ALL ELSE…  Don't sell too much too soon – your email subscribers need warming up!  HIGHLIGHTS YOU SIMPLY CAN'T MISS  An introduction to Sarah Marie 05:15 Onboarding your email subscribers 9:03 Onboarding mistakes that turn your subscribers off 22:36 How often should you email your list? 29:06 What to do if your email subscribers are not buying 32:20 How to increase email engagement 36:37 Writing a successful subject line 41:34   CHECK SARAH MARIE OUT:  https://sarahmarieanderson.com/ (Website) https://www.instagram.com/sarahmarieglobal/ (Instagram) https://www.facebook.com/sarahandersonemails/ (Facebook)   RESOURCES MENTIONED  http://www.teresaheathwareing.com/2022planning (2022) half day planning and goal setting session   Transcript:  Hello and really warm welcome to this week's episode of the podcast.
