You can be a hero at any age, at least that is what Saroo Brierley, whose real name is Sheru Munshi Khan, teaches us through his story. Born into a very poor family in Khandwa, India, to a father who forced his mother to work in public works and his children to beg in railway stations, and then abandoned the family. One night in 1986, in order to feed their mother and siblings, Saroo and his brother Guddu, after a day of begging at their city's train station, hop on a train, and then transfer to a second train towards another destination. We start with a complete lack of intro this week but don't worry it won't be too long before we settle into our usual bland patter as we discuss the Top 5 Hitchhikers. Expect a few stories from seasoned traveller Dan, having somehow once found himself in the Belgian Congo after draft dodging, or perhaps some other stuff that he did actually say. LION (2016) is a biography of Indian-Australian entrepreneur Saroo Brierley which tells the amazing journey of his reunification with his family, 25 years after having become separated from them in a train station in rural India. Accidentally journeying 1600km to Kolkata (Calcutta) where his native Hindi makes him incomprehensible to the Bengali speaking locals, newcomer Sunny Pawar gives an astonishing performance in the harrowing first 40 minutes as five-year old Sheru, who finds himself homeless and almost the victim of sex crimes before he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Dev Patel plays the adult Saroo searching improbably for his home, Rooney Mara does as much as she can with the thankless task of obligatory composite girlfriend but it's Nicole Kidman and David Wenham's benevolent parents Sue and John who warm your soul in the movies second half, made all the more affecting by Kidman's personal situation as mother to adopted children, before a simultaneously uplifting and heart-breaking ending draws this emotional gut-wringer to a close. A complete lack of any real lion content and an extended cameo from Google Earth forces me to take a star off.  It's summer vacation and PHINEAS AND FERB find themselves challenged to a thumb wrestling competition by local bully Buford after an accidental public humiliation with an ice-cream. Meanwhile, probable Nazi Dr Doofenshmirtz is attempting to mind-rape people into attending his birthday party and only the brother's pet platypus Perry can stop him. With Phineas undergoing a rigorous training regime masterminded by former world heavyweight champion boxer Evander Holyfield, and thousands of tickets sold to the forthcoming bout, sister Candace has the chance she needs to finally obtain undisputable proof of the boys' shenanigans. Sharp writing and consistent wittiness mean this Disney offering was a firm favourite in one Dads house. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. We’re ending 2020 with one of the most inspirational stories ever told! This week we’re discussing the remarkable tale of Saroo Brierley. In 1986, as a 5yr old, Saroo accidentally boarded a train looking for his brother. After riding the train for days, he ended up lost in a sea of people in Kolkata. Rendered homeless for nearly a month, and eventually put into an orphanage....he was later adopted by a family from Tasmania. Using just a few vivid memories he had as a 5yr old, Saroo, used Google Earth to navigate his way back home 25yrs later. If you haven’t seen the 2016 Oscar-nominated film LION, please watch it before you listen to this episode. Based on the 2013 non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley, it’s one of the most powerful biographical drama films I’ve ever seen. It retells the story of Saroo, who was lost to his family in India at age 5 after ending up on a train bound more than 1,000 kilometers away from his hometown. After living on the street and then an orphanage, he is adopted by Tasmanian couple Sue and John Brierley. A year into his life with them, the couple adopt another boy, Mantosh, who due to the trauma he experienced in the Indian orphanages he was in, has a lot of trouble adjusting to his new home and this is one of the many heartbreaking parts of the film. 20 years later, using Google Earth Saroo remarkably finds his hometown. The film ends with Saroo's return to India in February 2012 and being reunited with his biological mother, and we learn that his brother Guddu was killed by a train the same night that they were separated as children. While we learnt a lot about Sue in the movie, who is played by Nicole Kidman, I was left wanting to know more about this extraordinary woman who knew from a young age that adoption would always be her path. There’s a moment in the film where Saroo learns that sue is not infertile, and that she chose adoption because it was what she wanted. It was her path. And Sue is our guest on the podcast today. She has just written the most powerful memoir Lioness, which is out now, and I hope you will all read. This is a beautiful story of family in all its forms, and the quest of one woman to better the lives of children in need. In today’s conversation, we talk about: Sue’s early life as the child of refugees from Hungary and Poland, living in an isolated environment and with poor language skills in Tasmania. Her violent father and traumatic childhood and how this trauma has played out in her life. Her journey to motherhood and her desire to help vulnerable children. The arrival of her first son Saroo and what it was like being a mother for the first time. Adopting another son from India, Mantosh, who had experienced significant trauma in India and how the challenges she faced sent her into a deep depression. What it was like when she travelled to India to meet Saroo’s birth mother. The film LION and how the experience was incredibly emotional for her family. The process of writing her memoir Lioness. On the cruise we met Don and Renee Worcester. They are marriage/life coaches and we were so blessed to meet them! And one day you guys will too, cause we are definitely going to have them on the podcast. They have so much great advice to give, and they also happen to be adoptive parents and have a crazy story to tell! If you want to find out more about them, you can check them out here. This week's episode discusses: The movie Lion (on Netflix!). This movie is incredible, and is based on the true story by Saroo Brierley, who as a young boy, got separated from his family when he fell asleep on a train. He was lost and eventually adopted by an amazing family in Australia. This movie will make you bawl your face off. Saroo also wrote a book:  A Long Way Home, we haven't read it yet, but it is on our list of books to read. And one day maybe we can get Saroo on our podcast! Wouldn't that be amazing?? Saroo's story is strongly dependent on the magical technology of Google Earth. We didn't know when this came out while recording, and it was 2004. But in Saroo's life story, he used Google Earth for a few years before he made a major breakthrough in 2011. (We said 2012 in the podcast. But that's the year he traveled to meet his birth mom.) We talked about Ontario Place, the place where we lost Lily when she was 3 or 4. We are the best parents ever. Chris referenced Episode 7: Wow That's Cool. Citibank vs CitiBank-uh . It's a real thing. Here's the giant building Chris and Robert were trying to get to while in Seoul. This week's life hack: Living with less baggage Essentialism by Greg McKeown. This book is fantastic and really causes you to live with intentionality and purpose and less. Living with less emotional baggage - I had to apologize/make amends with a neighbor after her kid fell at my house. I am the Witch of our neighborhood. Living with less physical baggage - having less in your physical Wardrobe, and home, makes for quicker tidying up and less clutter. Marie Kondo's book: "The Magical Art of Tidying Up" has helped me tremendously with this! Good Word of the Day: "I will satisfy the weary, and all who are faint I will replenish." Jeremiah 31:25 Most of our listeners are on summer break, and we just wrapped ours up! But whether you have kids, or don't, whether they are back in school, or not - we hope you are able to find moments of rest and allow the Lord to refresh you! Thanks for tuning in! We are so glad to be back, and as always, we are so thankful for you, dear listener! reallifechurch.org – Lion is the real-life story of Saroo Brierley. His story began as a five-year-old Indian boy who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. Throughout life many of us go through a season of trying to survive; looking for answers, seeking healing from sickness, disappointed with our job or struggling through a broken marriage. Just as Saroo became lost in life, he was always seeking to find his mother. And just like his mother, God is searching for us and He will never give up until we find Him.

Composers Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka discuss the unique challenges of crafting the emotional score for LION in eight weeks and collaborating from their studios in Los Angeles and Germany. We also explore the approach and inspiration behind four of the tracks from this incredible film. LION tells the story of Saroo Brierley who at the age of five got separated from his family in India, whilst he was waiting at a train station for his brother who never returned. After living on the streets of Calcutta for three weeks he was picked up by an orphanage and later adopted by an Australian couple. Based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley the film explores the dynamics of our hyper-connected world and how Saroo managed to track down his family using Google Earth. The film stars Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman.
