The Wild Robot is a heartfelt story is about motherhood and kindness. It’s also about sacrifice. Paul Asay with Plugged In shares about this familiar theme present in a lot of kids' movies which just might make viewers, especially the adults, a little misty-eyed. Is Hollywood out to make kids cry? Perhaps something else going on here. The over-arching question is, 'Why are so many great kids movies sad?' Is that a good thing?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode, Rick overcomes his loneliness and flies solo to tackle the recent Tom Hanks hit movie, A Man Called Otto (2023). This is a heavy movie with therapeutic themes such as grieving the death of a spouse, factors that make grief unique for everyone (including Otto), suicidal ideation, and the importance of loving others through pain and loss. Plus we explore the classic question, “why do we like sad movies so much?” **disclaimer: this movie features multiple vivid images  of suicidal ideation and attempts, and they are discussed in this episode. This week on the pod Jimmy wanted to discuss some movies that got them a little bit misty eyed, so they cued up the notorious tear jerker Studio Ghibli classic The Grave of the Fireflies. They discuss the qualities of the film that make it so enjoyable despite its heavy theme and reputation for being one of the saddest movies ever. Then they move onto 2021's Pig, which is kind of like John Wick but with a truffle pig instead of a dog. Or is it? Turns out - not at all! One of the things discussed is the initial impression this movie made and how it subverts the audience's expectation in revealing itself as a story about grief and loss. It's also one of Tristan's favourite movies ever. Tear Trigger warning: the guys reference the moment in Forrest Gump where he talks to Jenny's grave. He's so smarht Jennay! :'(

There are movies that bring tears to your eyes in a pleasant way - see episode 32 - but then there are tearjerkers that you know if you EVER watch again it will completely and totally suck out the guts of your soul. This is not to say that these are BAD movies - in many, many cases, they are exceptional movies.  But WE, the viewer, have personally had such a strong reaction to the experience of viewing these films, that we don't think we can ever go back and have that experience again.   So, Annie and I are here today to talk about the five movies each of us experienced that we absolutely cannot bear to ever watch again.  Because if we ever did, I feel quite confident that this podcast would completely and totally blow up since we will both be beyond depressed to do anything else.  Ha Ha Ha. Have you got a Top Five idea you want to float by us?  Or maybe you are finally ready to call us out on one or more of our lists?  If that's the case, then please send us an email:  hello@thetopfivepodcast.com

You know EXACTLY the kind of movie we're talking about today - you know exactly when you're going to cry and what kind of cry it's going to be...and that winds up being totally okay with you.  It's the kind of cry that, once it's over, actually makes you feel kind of good because the emotions are heartwarming tales of true love, personal triumph, or a wealth of other things.   Like...the music swell coming up during EVITA when Madonna beings singing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" on the Casa Rosada. Or...Forest Gump and Jenny in Washington DC. Or...fill in the blank.   That's what Annie and I are talking about today.  Annie brought some amazing context to this show as well so I'm really proud of the conversation.  And you know that an episode like this is going to have a flip side - so be on the lookout for the episode featuring Tearjerkers We Will Never, EVER, Watch Again.   Do you have a Top Five list you'd like us to consider?  Or maybe you thought this week's episode was shit?  That's okay - we still want to hear about it!  Send us an email at hello@thetopfivepodcast.com We'll catch up with you on next week's episode!!

When my mind tries to protect me from things that cause me pain, I have to redirect my sadness onto something else. I won't cry about the lack of clarity in my professional life so I'll listen to my “Sad White Boys” playlist and let a tear go for the ache in Chet Baker's voice as he sings “My Funny Valentine.” Ashley C. Ford does something similar, and I'm so glad I got to talk to her about the catharsis that happens when you make yourself sad on purpose.    Indulgence Nichole recommends a painting kit!   Guest Ashley C. Ford's New York Times best-selling memoir, Somebody's Daughter, was published by Flatiron Books in June 2021. Ford is the former host of The Chronicles of Now podcast, co-host of The HBO companion podcast Lovecraft Country Radio. Ford has written or guest-edited for ELLE Magazine, Slate, Teen Vogue, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Domino, Cup of Jo, and various other web and print publications. Boyd   About The Show Nichole Perkins wants people to stop feeling bad about feeling good, and This Is Good For You lets you know you are never alone in what you like. Every episode, Nichole explores something that people love—whether it's needlepoint, watching bad movies with friends, or cowgirl exercise classes—and asks experts and devotees why it makes them happy. She ends each show with an Indulgence: a recommendation that listeners can enjoy with no remorse. There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure when you learn to love it freely! Jamaican Diva Barbara Jones Dies at the Age of 62 Jamaican Diva Barbara Jones died last Friday at the age of 62 in Kingston Jamaica. Her soul influenced reggae ballads propelled her to popularity in the seventies along with Judy Mowatt and Pam Hall. Jones was born Barbara Nation in Kingston but grew up in Manchester, a rural parish located in central Jamaica. She began her musical career cutting a cover of American country singer Sue Thompson's Sad Movies with the Soul Syndicate Band for Randy's Records. Most of her popular songs included, Evie Sands' Angel in The Morning and Walk through This World with Me, originally done by Englebert Humperdinck and Dream Lover. Jones toured with Jimmy Cliff as a backup singer, before giving up secular music in the early 1980s. She became a Christian and eventually recorded four gospel albums. In May, Jones returned to her reggae roots by doing two shows in Brazil along with bassist/singer Lloyd Parks. They did shows in the cities of Teresina and Belem. Jones was shocked she had fans in Brazil, a vibrant market for so-called vintage reggae. “I didn't know my songs were so popular there. People always told me, I should go to Brazil as they love me there,” she told the Jamaica Observer during an interview after her return. Barbara Jones is survived by her husband, three children and three grandchildren. The thanksgiving service for her life is scheduled for the Gregory Park Baptist Church on January 10.
